0:00:21 > 0:00:25When pets are poorly, wildlife gets wounded or farm animals feel unwell,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28they need top vet help.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30The really lucky ones come here

0:00:41 > 0:00:44And now, six kids chosen from 1,000

0:00:44 > 0:00:47have become the first ever children allowed to enrol here...

0:00:49 > 0:00:50I'm all ready.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54..and work alongside the school's top vets.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Who wants to take this cow's urine?

0:00:56 > 0:00:59They're facing an intense training programme.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Have you done that anaesthetic before?

0:01:01 > 0:01:03What is this? What's that?

0:01:03 > 0:01:07And they're being pushed to the limit at animal hospitals,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10vet practices, wildlife parks and working farms.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12I'm Paul Manktelow.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15It took me five hard years to train to be a vet

0:01:15 > 0:01:20but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23My junior vets have hardly been around animals before.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24That's so cool!

0:01:24 > 0:01:28Now they are facing real, heavy duty vet work.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30It's like everything's just so bonkers.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36That is amazing. That's cool.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Have they got the stomach to succeed?

0:01:38 > 0:01:41I feel like a real vet.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44And can they stay calm under extreme pressure?

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Six raw recruits.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I can only choose...

0:01:54 > 0:01:57one winner.

0:01:57 > 0:02:03The first ever junior vet to win the prestigious head vet title is...

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Day two and my junior vets have shown

0:02:15 > 0:02:18they are committed to caring for animals.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20But can they keep it up when under pressure?

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Junior vets, welcome back.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28You have made it through your first day at vet school so very well done.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32But now it is time to pick up the pace. So...

0:02:32 > 0:02:37Saira and Amblessed. Will and Morgan. Sam and Lauren.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Let's get down to business.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Today, my junior vets will be working with the school's top vets

0:02:44 > 0:02:47in the hospital, on the farm and at the races!

0:02:50 > 0:02:53I'll be getting regular reports on their performance.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55They all want to get their hands on one of these -

0:02:55 > 0:02:58the daily Vital Vet Work award.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01But, ultimately, it's my decision who will be named head vet.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05So how are my junior vets shaping up?

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Amblessed might be the youngest of my junior vets

0:03:08 > 0:03:11but she is already showing top vet potential.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15She's shown she can pick up new skills at speed.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Just as well because today will be a very different challenge for her.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23He has around 120 heartbeats a minute, which is good.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28But it is Sam, who with his previous partner Saira, took an early lead

0:03:28 > 0:03:31when they became the first ever Vital Vet Work award winners.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Today is going to be an all-important day for Sam

0:03:36 > 0:03:39who has ambitions of becoming a veterinary surgeon when he's older.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40That's quite cool.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45Will he be able to hack it in an operating theatre? Let's find out.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55In the vet school, small animal hospital surgeon Sam Woods

0:03:55 > 0:04:00is attending to a very poorly patient.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Four-year-old Stella is normally a playful Labrador cross,

0:04:03 > 0:04:05but she suffered a serious leg injury

0:04:05 > 0:04:07when she was run over by a car.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Hi, Lauren and Sam. I'd like you to meet Stella.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Come on. There we go.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22She was out having a run with her owner and, unfortunately, managed

0:04:22 > 0:04:28to slip her collar and ran across the road and got hit by a car.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32We were quite shocked to find Stella in the state she was.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35She was quite run down and you could tell

0:04:35 > 0:04:37that she was quite upset with her leg.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39So sweet.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Dogs have wrists similar to humans.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Stella's wrist joints have opened up and she needs urgent surgery

0:04:45 > 0:04:47to repair the damage. If the surgery isn't successful,

0:04:47 > 0:04:52she could be in a lot of pain for the rest of her life.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Our junior vets prepare Stella for surgery.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02She is given anaesthetic, a drug to keep her safely unconscious

0:05:02 > 0:05:04throughout the operation.

0:05:04 > 0:05:11Lauren has the first big job - to clip the hair on Stella's leg.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13With Stella unconscious,

0:05:13 > 0:05:16junior vet Sam gets his first glimpse of the injury

0:05:16 > 0:05:18and it's not pretty.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20- Is that the bone? - Yeah, that's the bone in there.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Can I come around and have a look?

0:05:23 > 0:05:25When we saw the wound,

0:05:25 > 0:05:29it was really, really shocking. Just like the state it was in,

0:05:29 > 0:05:32it was just disgusting.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Both junior vets Sam and Lauren are determined to try and help Stella.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39They scrub in for their first ever vet school op.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41This is a vital job for any surgeon.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Washing their hands over and over will help prevent dirt or infection

0:05:45 > 0:05:47getting into theatre and harming Stella.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49I'm all ready.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53Once scrubbed in, the junior vets cannot touch anything

0:05:53 > 0:05:54including their own face!

0:05:54 > 0:05:57But Lauren's made a mistake.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Lauren did all her scrubbing

0:05:59 > 0:06:01and then, with her bare hands, she's touched her mask,

0:06:01 > 0:06:04like, just like a tiny bit.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07So that obviously means that she has to start all the scrubbing again.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12I was so angry with myself. It was... I was so irritated.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16I'm not doing that again.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20All done. Now it's safe to bring Stella into theatre,

0:06:20 > 0:06:24but are my wannabe vets up for this big job?

0:06:24 > 0:06:26I'm not worried that I'll faint or anything.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29I think you have just got to get on with it, really.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32This veterinary team has years of experience.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34One, two, three!

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Except Sam and Lauren who have only one vet school day

0:06:37 > 0:06:39under their belt so far.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Just hold the foot. That's great.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43It's all going to plan.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Can you count the number of swabs that we have there?

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Seven, eight, nine, ten.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Then suddenly, it proves too much for junior vet Sam.

0:06:53 > 0:06:58He leaves the theatre feeling light-headed.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Can I take my mask off?

0:07:00 > 0:07:03That's what I needed to get off.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06It wasn't the blood and guts and gore that set me off at all.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09It was more the fact that we were standing there,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12in the hot room and then, I think, with the mask as well.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16And when you breathe in and breathe out, it's so hot and it all gathers

0:07:16 > 0:07:20in your mask and it's just really not comfortable at all.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23While Sam catches his breath, Lauren sticks with Stella.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28For now, the operation must continue minus one junior vet.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33Later, the team work to repair Stella's damaged wrist joints.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35But will Sam make it back into surgery?

0:07:35 > 0:07:38I'll just stay with you, in case you do feel a little bit worse.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50It's flat racing day at Musselburgh Racecourse in Edinburgh.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58With 75 horses taking part, it's crucial to have a top emergency

0:07:58 > 0:08:01response team on standby at all times.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Lucky junior vets Will and Morgan are about to experience

0:08:04 > 0:08:08what it's like to be a vet on call on a special race day.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10So, what equipment will we need for today?

0:08:10 > 0:08:11Right, so we need a bandage box.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Does one of you want to get one of these big blue bandage boxes for me?

0:08:15 > 0:08:19The team are on hand to help any horse that becomes ill or injured.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Sadly, broken limbs are a real possibility.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26So these are if we have a horse that we suspect has a broken leg.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28We can use these to kind of stabilise the legs.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31So, we'll take all these things into the car, all right?

0:08:33 > 0:08:36These huge horses weigh around 450 kilos

0:08:36 > 0:08:39and reach speeds of 40 miles per hour.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43When race horses fall, injuries can be serious.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Badly injured horses sometimes have to be put to sleep straightaway

0:08:46 > 0:08:48to stop their suffering.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51John must prepare the junior vets for the very worst.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54We have this drug here,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56which is basically like a strong aesthetic,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59and it basically anaesthetises the animal very deeply

0:08:59 > 0:09:01and then sends them slowly into death.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03You may come across that in the course of today.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Hopefully you will be well prepared for that.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10We then realised that we had a very serious job that we had

0:09:10 > 0:09:13to deal with and we had to help out a lot.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15As the horses are led to the starting line,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18the team complete final communication tests.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22RADIO: 'Top of the course to Junior Vets, come in, please, over.'

0:09:22 > 0:09:23Junior vets receiving, over.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Well done, excellent. So we're all ready to go now.

0:09:26 > 0:09:27Awesome.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Quick, guys.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32The vet team have access-all-area passes

0:09:32 > 0:09:36and head for their response vehicle in the centre of the course.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Junior Vets are go.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45The junior vets have important roles today.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47They must closely observe the runners

0:09:47 > 0:09:50and look carefully for any signs of injury.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53They must keep their concentration at all times.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56When the horses went, we started really zooming off.

0:09:56 > 0:09:57I wasn't expecting it.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59The reason we do this is to make sure we're nice and close

0:09:59 > 0:10:02to the horses in case anything happens, obviously.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Means we can be there within a few seconds.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09But with all the excitement, John is worried that Will and Morgan

0:10:09 > 0:10:12have lost sight of their important role.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Remember to look out for the horses, guys.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Here for a job.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19Coming up - can my junior vets prove themselves to John

0:10:19 > 0:10:21when they help a hot horse?

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Here's a good boy.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32As well as being home to some of the most cutting-edge technology,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35the vet school also has its own working sheep farm.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42City girls Amblessed and Saira have been called to help farm vet

0:10:42 > 0:10:47Isabelle Truyers, who suspects she may have a sick sheep in her flock.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Sheep need regular checks for infectious disease

0:10:49 > 0:10:51and lameness, or limping,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54which is a sign they could be injured or ill.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Can you spot any of the lambs that are lame in this group?

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Any of them sort of flicking their heads?

0:11:00 > 0:11:04I really wanted to help so I was looking for the little signs.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Might be limping a bit or twitching or something.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11I think the white one's flicking its head

0:11:11 > 0:11:13when it's walking cos all the others seem to be upright.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- Very good.- It's only taking small steps

0:11:16 > 0:11:21- so maybe that was why he was behind and everyone started running.- Yeah.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Isabelle decides she wants to bring in the entire flock

0:11:23 > 0:11:26for a close-up inspection.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29So let's see if you can do as well as Paul the sheepdog

0:11:29 > 0:11:31and bring them into the shed first.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Give it a go? Good stuff.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36This is a huge challenge for Saira and Amblessed.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38They are my least experienced junior vets.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42They decide to go behind the flock and shepherd them down the hill.

0:11:44 > 0:11:49And the strategy pays off. Even Col the sheepdog is impressed!

0:11:49 > 0:11:51It was quite fun actually.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55My junior vets make light work of rounding up the leaping lambs...

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Wow. That was cool.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04Right, girls. Let's get them inside so we can take a closer look.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07..and move them into the inspection area like seasoned shepherds.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13But before the team can examine the sheep with a painful looking limp,

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Amblessed and Saira need to learn how to safely handle

0:12:16 > 0:12:19the heavy animals. It's called sheep turning.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21How are you feeling, Amblessed?

0:12:21 > 0:12:22Bit nervous but I'm ready.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24OK, let's see how you get on.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28There's a real knack to turning sheep.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Even qualified vets can struggle.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- So, you'll have to stand on the left hand-side of the lamb.- This side?

0:12:33 > 0:12:37Yes. OK, one hand on its bum. Yeah? Just there.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40And one hand underneath its jaw.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43If they can prove they can keep a sheep under control,

0:12:43 > 0:12:44they'll be able to help the lame lamb.

0:12:44 > 0:12:49And push its bum down. There we go.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51And you hold the lamb like that.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54- Wow. Well done, Amblessed. - That was really good.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56That was very impressive.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Amblessed, are you proud of yourself there?

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- You just managed to turn a sheep. - Yeah, I'm really proud.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07And later, it's Saira's go before both junior vets get to grips

0:13:07 > 0:13:08with poorly hooves.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Good job. Excellent.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme

0:13:20 > 0:13:22here at vet school.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26And it's in the training zone where they'll be learning

0:13:26 > 0:13:30essential skills that will help them complete important veterinary work.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33For impressive training zone performances,

0:13:33 > 0:13:34I give out vet skills credits

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and, along with the all-important Vital Vet Work awards,

0:13:37 > 0:13:43they'll help me decide who will eventually be named head vet.

0:13:43 > 0:13:44And in this training zone session,

0:13:44 > 0:13:48my junior vets must learn how to stitch up skin!

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Stitching is called suturing in the vet world.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Neat work shows a nervous owner that their beloved pet

0:13:54 > 0:13:55has been in expert hands.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I've asked surgeon Sam Woods to help me train and test the junior vets.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06So, the first thing you need to do is know about your instruments.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Sam demos on plastic skin.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12This is the only chance our junior vets will have to pick up the skills

0:14:12 > 0:14:14before they have a go themselves

0:14:14 > 0:14:18using forceps, a needle holder and scissors.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20- Lift that up. - And working against the clock...

0:14:20 > 0:14:24- Wrap it.- ..each team must complete a neat line of stitching.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27Grab the free end and swap hands.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30And I'm not only looking for brilliant handiwork,

0:14:30 > 0:14:34I want to see great team skills too.

0:14:34 > 0:14:35And that's a knot. OK.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37So, I hope you have been paying attention

0:14:37 > 0:14:39because now it's your turn.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43And their turn...is on hairy pork!

0:14:45 > 0:14:47- I've forgot.- Put your thumb in there

0:14:47 > 0:14:51- and then put your fourth finger in there.- This smells really bad.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54It can take years for vets to perfect this skill

0:14:54 > 0:14:58but Will and Amblessed have picked it up in minutes.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01What does it feel like when you're doing it on skin?

0:15:01 > 0:15:04It's all... It's just disgusting.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Pull that one back. That one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12And keep pulling. Make it really tight.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14These two are working brilliantly as a team

0:15:14 > 0:15:16and their stitching is neat and tidy.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20Then I'll hold this side. You yank with that one. Yes.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23But it's a really slow start from Sam and Saira.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26You put that through, don't you? Do you?

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Real vets can't hang around in surgery.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32- I've done it wrong.- You need to move that bit that way

0:15:32 > 0:15:34and that bit that way. Does that make sense?

0:15:34 > 0:15:35Morgan is doing well.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38- How we getting on, Morgan?- Fine.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42But his partner has picked up on a tiny technical error.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44You're not supposed to let go of it.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Junior vets, times up.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54Put down your instruments and stand away from the table.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56So, who's got stitching sewn up

0:15:56 > 0:15:58and won the very first vet skills credits?

0:16:00 > 0:16:02- Well done.- You too.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Today, it's Will and Amblessed who've really stood out.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Very neat stitching and they worked well as a team.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11That's a vet skills credit for each of them!

0:16:13 > 0:16:17You can see how you get on as a virtual vet in the Junior Vets game

0:16:17 > 0:16:18on the CBBC website.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21And don't forget to look for the special game code

0:16:21 > 0:16:23at the end of today's show!

0:16:31 > 0:16:35Back at Musselburgh Racecourse, Will and Morgan are on hand

0:16:35 > 0:16:38to deal with any horses that are injured or ill.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45So far, the race horses haven't needed my junior vets' help.

0:16:45 > 0:16:51But suddenly, they're called to the treatment area.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57Right, let's go then, guys. Come on.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01A horse has run badly and there are concerns it is seriously unwell.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05This is the closest Morgan has ever been to a horse in his life!

0:17:05 > 0:17:08John and the junior vets use a special bit of equipment

0:17:08 > 0:17:10called an endoscope to investigate.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12It's a little bit tickly until they get in.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15This will allow them to examine the race horse's nasal passage,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18throat and windpipe to see what's wrong.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20That's a good boy.

0:17:20 > 0:17:25With the camera in place, Morgan can see deep inside the horse's airways.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30We had to check for bleeding or swelling in the air pipe.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32They are looking for signs of inflammation,

0:17:32 > 0:17:34redness or spots of blood.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39That was actually nice and clean down there. Nice clean airway.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41No evidence of bleeding. No evidence of muck down there.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44So it was no real reason for him doing what he did.

0:17:44 > 0:17:45Thanks very much.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48No problem at all. My pleasure.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50It's an all clear. There's no infection.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53The horse just struggled on a very hot day

0:17:53 > 0:17:55but it's not seriously ill.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01My junior vets now know there's no down time for a vet on race day -

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Will and Morgan put in a busy shift today.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07We had to be everywhere and all different places.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10We had to be on the ball with all the equipment and everything.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12We had responsibilities.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Thankfully, all today's horses made it through their races

0:18:14 > 0:18:17and returned home without serious injury.

0:18:22 > 0:18:27At the small animal hospital, poor Labrador cross Stella

0:18:27 > 0:18:31is in surgery after suffering a serious leg injury

0:18:31 > 0:18:33in a road accident.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Stella is having her badly damaged wrist bones

0:18:37 > 0:18:42repaired before a protective cage is attached to the outside of her leg.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Lauren and Sam were helping with the op

0:18:44 > 0:18:47but the surgical team is now one man down.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Surgery has made Sam feel unwell and he's taking a breather.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55That was the first operation I would have done

0:18:55 > 0:18:59and I was really, really looking forward to it.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03I just started to feel really weird and faint.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05And I think it was just a bit overwhelming,

0:19:05 > 0:19:07just with what was going on.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11While Sam has time to recover, Lauren continues with her job

0:19:11 > 0:19:13and drains blood away from the wound with a suction pipe.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16It's like trying to get an egg shell out of your yolk.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20Stella's op is long and complicated so Lauren takes a much needed break.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28That was so good. Yeah, it was really cool.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30You've got to go in there again.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Are you all right with all the gory stuff?

0:19:33 > 0:19:35I can see they have opened it really far.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37Yeah, they had to.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41With Stella's op almost complete, Sam makes a brave decision.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45At the start, I vouched to help Stella.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48I said I just want to go back in.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51I couldn't have just stayed outside.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54So, how do you feel now you've come back into the surgery?

0:19:54 > 0:19:58I feel a bit relieved actually because I wanted to obviously help

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Stella in some way and have some input.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05As the last pins are fixed into Stella's wrist,

0:20:05 > 0:20:10the junior vets go ahead and prepare a nice warm recovery bed.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15Do you think she's going to like our bed?

0:20:15 > 0:20:19I hope she does. Five-star accommodation.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22Do you think they have a button where you can call for room service?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25But it won't be until morning before they can check

0:20:25 > 0:20:27on Stella's progress again.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31I didn't really know how the operation had gone.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34I thought she'd just be lying in a crate,

0:20:34 > 0:20:37feeling sorry for herself and not very happy.

0:20:39 > 0:20:45But incredibly, the next morning,

0:20:45 > 0:20:51Stella is out of her recovery kennel and on her feet!

0:20:53 > 0:20:56She was almost back to how she was

0:20:56 > 0:20:59and better than before the operation.

0:20:59 > 0:21:05I was so happy that I'd done that and that we'd made her feel better.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16Both Sam and Lauren took part

0:21:16 > 0:21:19in highly specialised surgery with Stella.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Every time I help an animal,

0:21:21 > 0:21:25I get like this little feeling inside, which is really nice.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27And I just like helping animals

0:21:27 > 0:21:30and I really just want to do that for the rest of my life.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Going forward, I think I'll be a lot more confident

0:21:33 > 0:21:35going into other operations.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37And I think I'll know what's coming up

0:21:37 > 0:21:40and maybe do other things differently.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43And Stella? The protective cage is now off

0:21:43 > 0:21:46and she is well on the way to a complete recovery.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Down on the vet school farm,

0:21:53 > 0:21:58there's a young sheep with a painful limp that could need treatment.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Before they can help the poor lamb, both junior vets need to prove

0:22:01 > 0:22:03they can keep a sheep safely under control.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06Amblessed has cracked it.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08Now it is Saira's turn.

0:22:08 > 0:22:13Seen how it's done there. You ready to have a go yourself?

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I'm a little nervous cos it looks like they can be

0:22:16 > 0:22:19a little bit forceful sometimes, but I'll have a go.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21You'll have a go. That's the spirit we like.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23OK, let's get in there.

0:22:23 > 0:22:28I thought that it might help her overcome her fear of large animals.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32Push the tail around. There we go. And now lift it up.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34OK, and hold it in your lap like this.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36Aww, hello.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40Saira has just about got to grips with her sheep.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44- It's struggling a bit. - Keep it in position, Saira!

0:22:44 > 0:22:46Wow, it's quite extraordinary.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Wow, it's a strong one, that one, isn't it?

0:22:48 > 0:22:52The first one that I had was a bit feisty and it was like, "OK!"

0:22:52 > 0:22:56The other sheep seem to be scared.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00I'll let it go, let it go, let it go.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04Unlucky, Saira. Even Isabelle struggled with that one.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06As a vet, whatever animal comes in to you,

0:23:06 > 0:23:10you're going to have to learn how to restrain it properly.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14The lame looking lamb really needs their help, but Saira has to prove

0:23:14 > 0:23:17she can control a sheep before they can treat it.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Stand here, behind the lamb, and let it lean in your lap.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25OK, I have to do this, otherwise, I'm not going to be able to help

0:23:25 > 0:23:27an animal that is so cute.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31That's it. And if you're relaxed, the lamb is relaxed as well.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36She's done it. Both junior vets can confidently handle livestock...

0:23:36 > 0:23:38It's quite difficult

0:23:38 > 0:23:42but I think you get the hand of it after a couple of goes.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45..and can now get on with treating the lame lamb

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Amblessed spotted earlier.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51And straightaway Saira notices a problem with its hooves.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54This one looks like it's sticking out.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58You're right, Saira. That horn and this hoof is overgrown.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02We can do what we do with the rabbits. We can clip it?

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Yeah, that's right.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Amblessed gets to work straightaway.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10Gently, don't take too much. Just like you're clipping your nails.

0:24:10 > 0:24:15When I'm cutting his excess horn, can he feel it? Will it hurt him?

0:24:15 > 0:24:18No, he shouldn't be able to feel that.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Good job.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21As Amblessed trims the hooves,

0:24:21 > 0:24:24the team discover signs of an infectious disease called scald.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27If the junior vets don't treat it today,

0:24:27 > 0:24:29the whole flock could be at risk.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31Count to five.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37But this antibiotic spray will help kill the infection

0:24:37 > 0:24:40and save the lambs a lot of pain.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Let's go.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48This has been a brilliant performance by Amblessed and Saira.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Neither of these two had ever even touched a sheep before.

0:24:51 > 0:24:52Now look at them!

0:24:52 > 0:24:55The guys are doing great, aren't they? They look really confident.

0:24:55 > 0:24:59I didn't really want to be a vet at the start of this.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01But doing this has made me consider being a vet

0:25:01 > 0:25:04because it is really good fun.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07I've been very impressed with the skills they've shown today

0:25:07 > 0:25:09and particularly the sheep turning.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12I really love being that person who can get them

0:25:12 > 0:25:14back to their good health

0:25:14 > 0:25:17and, yeah, it feels really good.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20And thanks to my junior vets,

0:25:20 > 0:25:23the flock's infection has been contained.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33My junior vets have another day's experience under their belt.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41They've all proved their commitment to helping animals,

0:25:41 > 0:25:46so choosing today's Vital Vet Work award winners is going to be hard.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Sam and Lauren pulled together after a difficult start

0:25:49 > 0:25:53to help with surgery on Stella's badly damaged leg.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57Amblessed and Saira overcame animal anxieties

0:25:57 > 0:26:00and learnt how to handle and treat a flock of jumpy sheep.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05And Will and Morgan had an exciting but hectic day at the races

0:26:05 > 0:26:08working as emergency horse vets.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11It's a tough call, but I have made a decision.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15Junior vets, if you didn't know it before, you know it now.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18Vet work is tough, but still you continued to impress me,

0:26:18 > 0:26:20so well done.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23But there is one clear winning team.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34Saira and Amblessed.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37You are today's top junior vets.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41I've dropped my junior vets into difficult veterinary challenges

0:26:41 > 0:26:45and they are discovering that vet work is tough and this is for real.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49They've all impressed me, but it was Amblessed and Saira

0:26:49 > 0:26:52who stood out as they overcame their fears

0:26:52 > 0:26:57and learnt valuable new animal handling skills.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Well deserved Vital Vet Work awards for each of them.
