0:01:15 > 0:01:20but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23My junior vets have hardly been around animals before.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23My junior vets have come a long way already,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27but they're just about to find out how tough vet work can get.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Junior vets, welcome back to vet school,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31are you enjoying the experience?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34- ALL: Yeah. - OK, today's teams are...

0:02:35 > 0:02:40..Morgan and Amblessed... Sam and Will...Lauren and Saira.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Let's get down to business.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Today, some of them will be working with the top vets here at vet school

0:02:45 > 0:02:49and one team is going out to a specialist horse hospital.

0:02:49 > 0:02:54They'll all be dealing with real animals that need their help.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I'll be keeping a close eye on them all day.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Only those who really impress me will be in with a chance of winning

0:02:59 > 0:03:01a vital vet work award,

0:03:01 > 0:03:05and moving one step closer to being named head vet.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Pack leader so far is Saira.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11She came to vet school really scared of big dogs,

0:03:11 > 0:03:12but she's conquered her fears...

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Hello.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16..and she's now thinking like a vet

0:03:16 > 0:03:19and handling her patients and their owners brilliantly.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22I'm one of the junior vets today. It's good news.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24But she needs to watch out for Will.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28He's flying and fancies his chances of taking the top title.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32With three operations under his belt, he's building up some serious

0:03:32 > 0:03:33surgical experience.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36- Another clamp. Same style clamp again.- This one?- That will be fine.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And he's keen to take on bigger challenges.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40Awesome!

0:03:40 > 0:03:43But how will he perform when he eventually gets his wish?

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Let's find out.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54At the horse hospital in Northumberland,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57ten-year-old pony, Henry, faces a critical day.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04He's normally a prize-winning show pony, but today he's a non-runner.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Poor Henry has a painfully swollen ankle and he needs urgent help.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Thankfully Henry's got a top team on his side.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17International super vet Cedric Chan travels the world healing horses

0:04:17 > 0:04:20and today, Will and Sam have left vet school to help him.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Cedric is a really cool guy,

0:04:22 > 0:04:24because he's sort of flying around the world.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27He'd just come back from France and I think he was going to Singapore.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Yeah, he's amazing that guy.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33This is Henry. He's our patient for today.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36We know he's got a problem in his left hind leg and an arthritic

0:04:36 > 0:04:39problem in his ankle joint, they call it the "hock" in horses.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41What we're going to do today is an operation to try

0:04:41 > 0:04:43and get that arthritis better.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Arthritis is a nasty condition that results in sore

0:04:48 > 0:04:50and swollen bone joints.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53In extreme cases, it can be incredibly painful.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57This is the X-ray of Henry's ankle.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Now, can you see that black line running across here?

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Normally, that should be a beautiful, clear black line, but can you see

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- there are bits that have been lost there across that line?- Yeah.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Cedric and his team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage

0:05:12 > 0:05:14in Henry's ankle joint.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17It may sound strange, but when the bones fuse together,

0:05:17 > 0:05:21the pain Henry is currently feeling will hopefully disappear.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27It's extreme surgery that no other junior vet has faced before.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28Go on, Henry.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32Will and Sam are leading Henry to the biggest operation of his life.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38And as Henry is anaesthetised, his legs will give way,

0:05:38 > 0:05:41so they must ensure he doesn't hurt himself as he falls.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51First, Henry's feet and legs are covered in sterile drapes

0:05:51 > 0:05:53to protect him from germs during surgery.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Then a tube is put into his windpipe that pumps a gas into his lungs.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04This will help him breathe and keep him unconscious for the entire op.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Now Henry is asleep, the junior vets need to quickly get him

0:06:07 > 0:06:09onto a huge horse-sized operating table,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12and with Henry weighing in at a whopping 300 kilos,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15they need specialised lifting kit to get him there.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19When I saw Henry upside-down and moving along the room, it was

0:06:19 > 0:06:24really weird, and the fact that I was in charge of putting him

0:06:24 > 0:06:26safely down on the operating table, as well...

0:06:27 > 0:06:30And then Will makes sure he's nice and secure.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39With Henry in position for the op, Will and Sam must make sure

0:06:39 > 0:06:41they're fully scrubbed and gowned for surgery.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Any germs or dirt could be really dangerous.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50That's good, just drop it down. That will do perfect.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52If today's operation is successful,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55it will save Henry from years of pain.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00I'm pleased to see Will is really starting to think like a vet now.

0:07:00 > 0:07:01Where will the holes be going?

0:07:01 > 0:07:04You feel the bump on the inside of the ankle, the hock, there,

0:07:04 > 0:07:06that's approximately where we're going to drill.

0:07:06 > 0:07:12And will this operation guarantee to actually fix all of these problems?

0:07:12 > 0:07:16It's never a 100% guarantee, but we normally give the owner

0:07:16 > 0:07:19a prognosis of about 70 to 80% for this procedure.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Right then, we're ready to go.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26Cedric's ready...but are Sam and Will ready to help him help Henry?

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I'm really excited about what I'm about to do, because it's

0:07:29 > 0:07:31really different. I've never done anything like it before.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34It makes me feel like a real vet.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Later, the junior vets are primed for action

0:07:37 > 0:07:39in case Henry needs their help.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44I think he's just a bit still shaky, so we'll just see how it unfolds.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51On his way to vet school from a local dog and cat home

0:07:51 > 0:07:53is stray cat Finbar.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56And waiting to receive him at the small animal hospital

0:07:56 > 0:07:58are junior vets Lauren and Saira.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00There's our cat.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Homeless Finbar faces two critical tests today.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07- Hello.- You can take Finbar, then.

0:08:07 > 0:08:12We needed to make sure he didn't have any diseases

0:08:12 > 0:08:16that could be transferred to any other animals.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19If the results are good, he could be up for re-homing.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22But if it's bad news Finbar will spend the rest of his life

0:08:22 > 0:08:24living indoors.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Today, Saira and Lauren will be assisting vet Jane Brown.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Hello, there.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30Hello.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Hello, Finbar.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Their first job is to relax Finbar for an external examination.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Yes, he's enjoying that, isn't he?

0:08:38 > 0:08:39He looks OK,

0:08:39 > 0:08:43but the team now need to test him for two contagious diseases

0:08:43 > 0:08:48called feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Both are harmless to humans but can be deadly to cats.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55If he has either, it will be very difficult to find him a new home.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Finbar's a really lovely cat, he's nice and playful.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01He's just really nice. I really love him.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05- He likes you! - Tell you what, I'm keeping you.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09He's cute and gentle now, but Finbar arrived with a feisty reputation.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Stray cats often have to scrap to survive,

0:09:12 > 0:09:16and serious diseases are passed on by bites and scratches.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Now, have you noticed on Finbar's face what he's got over his nose?

0:09:19 > 0:09:21He's got a scratch on his nose.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Yeah, he's a stray and he's a big lad

0:09:23 > 0:09:26and he's been out defending his territory.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28A blood sample is taken...

0:09:28 > 0:09:29That's a good boy.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32..then Saira carefully transfers the blood from the syringe

0:09:32 > 0:09:35to a sample tube so it can be tested.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Perfect, OK. That will be fine.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40These results really will be life changing for Finbar.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43I need to have an important chat with my junior vets.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Both of these viruses are highly contiguous,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50and if Finbar has got these diseases he wouldn't get a new home.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52It would be really difficult to re-home him.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55- Is there any cure to it, or...? - No.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01If the tests came back positive for Finbar,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04it wouldn't have been a very nice life for him,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06he wouldn't have been allowed outside.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08I think because Finbar was a stray cat,

0:10:08 > 0:10:13I knew that he had a higher chance of having these viruses.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17First, some of Finbar's blood is mixed with a special chemical.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20You just need one drop in each one.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23It will take ten minutes for the chemical to react with

0:10:23 > 0:10:25the blood and produce a final result.

0:10:25 > 0:10:31So, one line means he's in the clear, and two lines is bad news.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34So fingers crossed...

0:10:36 > 0:10:39And later, Saira and Lauren discover Finbar's fate.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- I can see one line starting to appear, can you?- Yeah.- Oh, yeah.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- As long as we don't get a second one.- We don't want any more.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51In another part of the small animal hospital,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Morgan and Amblessed are about to deal with a very special patient.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57It's so important that you focus today, OK?

0:10:57 > 0:11:02There's a really, really critical case and all eyes are on us.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Ingrid is a six-year-old German Shepherd cross

0:11:05 > 0:11:09who belongs to top vet school vet Tobias Schwarz.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Sadly, Ingrid is a very poorly dog.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17She has cancer and she's here to get her treatment checked.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19What type of cancer does she have?

0:11:19 > 0:11:22She has a cancer of her bone marrow.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It could end up in other parts of her body

0:11:25 > 0:11:27and that's what we want to check today.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30When Tobias said it was cancer, I felt really sorry for Ingrid.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34Ingrid's cancer is not curable, but with regular checks

0:11:34 > 0:11:37and treatment, they hope to keep it under control

0:11:37 > 0:11:40and help Ingrid live a longer, more pain-free life.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42So I'm going to hand over Ingrid to you,

0:11:42 > 0:11:45and please take good care of her.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Goodbye, Ingrid. I'll see you later.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51This is an incredible show of trust from Tobias.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55He's leaving my junior vets to help prepare Ingrid for her treatment.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57I think it was quite a lot of pressure,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59because obviously, it's one of the top vets

0:11:59 > 0:12:03and you want to do it really well, but then you feel quite honoured

0:12:03 > 0:12:07because he's going to trust you enough to take care of his dog.

0:12:07 > 0:12:12Ingrid needs an internal scan to make sure the cancer hasn't spread.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16Amblessed keeps the patient calm as they head for the prep room.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20So what we need to do now is to clip her up for her ultrasound scan.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24And Morgan has some valuable advice for Amblessed.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27If there is a bit you can't get, go in the direction

0:12:27 > 0:12:30of what the fur's going and it will come off.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31This is great teamwork,

0:12:31 > 0:12:35and their confident approach is helping keep Ingrid relaxed.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37That's perfect.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40That's impressively neat and tidy clipping from Amblessed.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42OK.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46Perfect. Ingrid is now ready for her scan.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52And later, Morgan and Amblessed give Ingrid a thorough inspection.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal?

0:13:01 > 0:13:04My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme

0:13:04 > 0:13:05here at vet school.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09It's in the training zone that they'll learn essential skills

0:13:09 > 0:13:12that will help them with veterinary work in the real world.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16For impressive training zone performances,

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I give out vet skill credits that,

0:13:18 > 0:13:21along with the all-important vital vet work awards,

0:13:21 > 0:13:26will help me decide who will eventually be crowned head vet.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Today's training zone session is all about reading radiographs

0:13:30 > 0:13:32or X-ray images.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34As Will and Sam found out with Henry the pony,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38X-rays allow vets to see what's going on inside an animal.

0:13:38 > 0:13:39For this test,

0:13:39 > 0:13:43I've challenged my junior vets to study a set of X-ray images.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48So how are we going to do this?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52They need to identify these three mystery animals.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Any idea what this is?

0:13:55 > 0:13:57I know what it could be.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59- What?- A tortoise.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Nice one, Will, it IS a tortoise.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06And this other reptile doesn't fool any of them.

0:14:06 > 0:14:07A snake.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12A lizard or a mouse, or I was thinking maybe a rat.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13I think the second... Yeah.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17I think that's a dog.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20It's not a dog, it's too small to be a dog. It could be a cat?

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Nope, not a cat or a dog. It's a hedgehog!

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Spikes don't show up on X-rays.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30And now I want to take them up a level.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Can my junior vets spot what's wrong in these X-rays?

0:14:34 > 0:14:37- It's tricky.- Right, so we've got one, three and five.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39I have no idea.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Only eagle-eyed Morgan spots the serious injury on this X-ray.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45I think it's a broken pelvis.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46Brilliant spot, Morgan!

0:14:46 > 0:14:48That's annoying me.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51But the dog with the fractured leg doesn't fool any of them.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54- Is that broken or dislocated? - Yeah, broken.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58That's been a fantastic training zone session.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01But who solved the most X-ray mysteries?

0:15:01 > 0:15:05I knew it would be hard, but I didn't think it would be that hard.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07Stand-out performances from Morgan and Amblessed.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11Their impressive detective skills gave them the highest score,

0:15:33 > 0:15:35In the small animal hospital,

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Finbar the stray cat has a real chance of a new life,

0:15:38 > 0:15:42IF tests results show he does not have a highly contagious virus.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Junior vets Saira and Lauren have helped to take his blood

0:15:48 > 0:15:50and the results of the test are nearly ready.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55It was quite scary and quite nerve-wracking,

0:15:55 > 0:16:00because I really liked Finbar and I just wanted the best for him.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03If two lines appear in one window of the test kit,

0:16:03 > 0:16:04it's bad news for Finbar

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- I can see one line starting to appear, can you?- Yeah.- Oh, yeah.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09One line is good.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- As long as we don't get a second one.- We don't want any more!

0:16:14 > 0:16:17- Ready...- Yay!- Yes!

0:16:17 > 0:16:20'Just one line in each window. Brilliant - it's negative!

0:16:21 > 0:16:24'The testing kit confirms Finbar is a healthy cat!'

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Yeah, I'm very pleased that it's a negative result, because it's

0:16:30 > 0:16:34just a great thing to know that he's not carrying a disease or anything.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36And he can be re-homed and have a lovely life now.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42Before Finbar leaves hospital,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45he needs a quick operation to make sure he doesn't become a dad

0:16:45 > 0:16:49to unwanted kittens, and then he'll be all set for a loving new home.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52So first it's a jab to make him unconscious.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Finbar's putting up a bit of a fight,

0:16:54 > 0:16:57but he's soon out for the count.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Lauren monitors his heart rate and breathing.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03His heart rate and his respiration rate are going down a bit now,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06but I've been making him blink and his colour's good, as well,

0:17:06 > 0:17:08so he's all good.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Saira helps Jane at the surgery end.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13How you feeling, Saira? Not woozy?

0:17:13 > 0:17:15- No.- No, she's a star.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18And the whole operation is finished in no time.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22I was just cleaning down and just testing to see

0:17:22 > 0:17:24if we'd gone through anything.

0:17:24 > 0:17:25But we haven't.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28There's only a little bit of blood, so that seems all good.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Finally, the junior vets call the dog and cat home

0:17:31 > 0:17:34where Finbar is currently staying to update them.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37I was just calling to say that it was good news about Finbar.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39'Oh, that's excellent.'

0:17:39 > 0:17:43We went ahead and neutered him and he's recovering well from that.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- That's wonderful!- OK, thank you, bye. - 'Thanks for the update, bye.'

0:17:46 > 0:17:48- Well done. That was good! - There you go.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Success!

0:17:50 > 0:17:53So just time for a goodbye and a good luck to Finbar.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56Bye, baby, bye, darling.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00I'm seeing Saira and Lauren consistently show they can be

0:18:00 > 0:18:04valuable members of a surgical team, but what does Jane think?

0:18:04 > 0:18:07They handled their patient calmly, efficiently,

0:18:07 > 0:18:10they weren't nervous of him and cats can pick that up,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13so I think they did very well in helping keep him calm,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15allowing the procedure to go smoothly.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Over the moon because he's a really nice cat. Happy days.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22And it gets happier - Finbar now has a brand-new home.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33In the small animal hospital,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36much loved-pet Ingrid, the German Shepherd cross,

0:18:36 > 0:18:38is having her monthly check-up.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41Morgan and Amblessed need to see

0:18:41 > 0:18:44if her cancer has spread beyond her bones.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47- One...two...three.- There we go.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51When I got to know Ingrid and started working with her,

0:18:51 > 0:18:54it made me think I really want a dog like her.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58Treating Ingrid today is a big responsibility for my junior vets.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Her owner is top vet Tobias Schwarz.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- Hello.- Hello, Tobias.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07- Is she behaving?- Very.- Excellent.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09The team will be using ultrasound

0:19:09 > 0:19:13to check some of her vital organs for signs of tumours.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16First of all we need to put the gel on.

0:19:16 > 0:19:21- All over?- Yeah, and you can then rub it in a bit.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25They're looking for any suspicious-looking areas.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Is the black dot in the spleen abnormal?

0:19:28 > 0:19:32I saw something quite dark on the ultrasound, which made me

0:19:32 > 0:19:37quite worried. If it was something bad, Tobias would be quite upset.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40There is something black here, isn't there?

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Thankfully, Tobias's years of experience tell him

0:19:43 > 0:19:46the black spot is a normal blood vessel.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48So far, I'm pleased that everything is going well

0:19:48 > 0:19:50and we've found nothing wrong.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52P1, please.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56Perfect. You also have to keep an eye on the hind legs.

0:19:56 > 0:19:57They're done.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01The cancer has not spread beyond Ingrid's bones -

0:20:01 > 0:20:03a big relief for everyone.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06So, Morgan, do you think everything went OK here?

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Yeah, I'm pleased with this,

0:20:08 > 0:20:13because we found nothing abnormal within the...stomach.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Great work from my junior vets, and brilliant news for Ingrid.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20It was a relief to find that she didn't need any new treatment

0:20:20 > 0:20:23and there was nothing wrong with her.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Working with Ingrid today has boosted my confidence with

0:20:25 > 0:20:27working with the animals,

0:20:27 > 0:20:31so if I do get an animal, I think I would be a really good pet owner.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33There you go.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35And they've really impressed top vet Tobias.

0:20:37 > 0:20:38Good girl.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48Back at the specialist horse hospital in Northumberland,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Henry the pony has been prepped for surgery

0:20:50 > 0:20:53to try and help relieve the pain in his arthritic ankle.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Sam and Will are away from vet school for the day to help out.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00Cedric and the team are going to drill away tissue called cartilage

0:21:00 > 0:21:01in Henry's ankle joint.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05The bones will then fuse together quicker, and when they do,

0:21:05 > 0:21:09the pain Henry is currently feeling will, hopefully, disappear.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11So I'm going to make an incision through the skin first.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15Give a little dab there, so you move the blood away for me. OK...lovely.

0:21:15 > 0:21:16OK, fine.

0:21:16 > 0:21:21First, vets Cedric and Sam need to put small needles into Henry's leg.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24These will show up on an X-ray and act as markers for the drill.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28Just try and keep it nice and parallel to the needle on top.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29Good work, Sam.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31OK, set up for a PD X-ray, please.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37This is really cool... It's, like, everything's just so...bonkers.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45The X-ray images show that the guide pins are in the right position,

0:21:45 > 0:21:48and the team now know exactly where to drill.

0:21:48 > 0:21:49All right, then, all ready to go?

0:21:51 > 0:21:54OK, I'm going to line it up - now, tell me, at the back there, Sam,

0:21:54 > 0:21:56does that look nice and straight?

0:21:56 > 0:21:59- That looks nice and parallel.- Nice and straight. Nice and parallel.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03- Three...two...one...go. - DRILLING

0:22:03 > 0:22:08We were there with the drill, drilling into a horse's leg!

0:22:08 > 0:22:10So that was really cool.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14This is precision surgery.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18They need to drill exactly two centimetres into Henry's leg.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Will checks the depth by inserting a small surgical ruler into the hole.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23That's nearly one.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25OK, so we need to do a bit more drilling, don't we?

0:22:25 > 0:22:28OK, that's fine. Right, is that nice and straight?

0:22:28 > 0:22:31- OK. Nice and straight. - Happy?- Yep.- OK, off we go.

0:22:31 > 0:22:32This might look gory,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35but it really could help Henry walk properly again.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38OK, check the gauge again.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40I was working with loads of amazing new equipment

0:22:40 > 0:22:43and different, sort of, stuff that I hadn't used before. I just

0:22:43 > 0:22:46thought it was amazing having the opportunity to do that.

0:22:46 > 0:22:47Just under two centimetres.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50- OK, happy with that, guys?- Yep.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52OK, we're happy with that - stop the drip, please.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54They're done.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56Now the priority is to get Henry awake,

0:22:56 > 0:22:58out of surgery and into recovery.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Cedric starts to stitch up the wound

0:23:01 > 0:23:05and asks my junior vets to finish the job. First, Sam...

0:23:07 > 0:23:11Push it through, that's it, perfect. That's it, you got it, there.

0:23:11 > 0:23:16It was a big leap forward, stitching up a horse with arthritis,

0:23:16 > 0:23:19and because Henry was sitting there, upside-down.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23It was just amazing and I felt really pleased with myself.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26And now Will completes Henry's stitching.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29Just guide it through gently and it should pop round the other side,

0:23:29 > 0:23:31that's lovely.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33The procedure is almost complete.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Finally, Will and Sam help insert removable staples that will

0:23:36 > 0:23:38help the wound heal faster.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40Lovely.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43And then Henry's leg is carefully bandaged up.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Right, let's get this pony back through to recovery, then.

0:23:46 > 0:23:47Almost there...

0:23:47 > 0:23:49OK, nice and slowly.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53..but they still need to move unconscious, 300-kilo Henry

0:23:53 > 0:23:54from the operating theatre!

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Drop down now.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59Will stays in total control.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Henry's now safely positioned on the floor.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06The junior vets apply extra bandages for added protection

0:24:06 > 0:24:08and everyone clears the area.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Henry's been given lots of painkillers

0:24:14 > 0:24:16so his leg won't be hurting.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20But he will be confused when he wakes and needs space to recover.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22The room is padded to protect him if he falls,

0:24:22 > 0:24:25and ropes are used to support him as he stands.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28Sam and Will keep a close eye on him at all times.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30I think he's still just a bit shaky,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33so we need to see how it unfolds.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40But it's not long before Henry finds his feet

0:24:40 > 0:24:42and his balance.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45He's made it through, thanks to the help of my brilliant junior vets!

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Will and Sam were involved in every single step of that

0:24:50 > 0:24:52incredible operation.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55Sam and Will did fantastically well today.

0:24:55 > 0:24:59Both of them really have been instrumental in getting Henry

0:24:59 > 0:25:01back to soundness again.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06- BOTH:- It was amazing. - It was so exciting.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09- It was really good. - Yeah, it was just so good.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10Awesome!

0:25:10 > 0:25:13But has it helped Sam make up his mind about working

0:25:13 > 0:25:15with humans or animals when he's older?

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I think in terms of my decision for a doctor or a vet

0:25:18 > 0:25:21it's so got to be a vet now after we done that operation.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23We've actually done something to help

0:25:23 > 0:25:27the animals, as well as having fun, which is, like, double whammy.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29And Henry? He's on the road to recovery

0:25:29 > 0:25:33and is now enjoying riding again with his relieved owner.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43Each of my junior vet teams faced huge

0:25:43 > 0:25:45and very different challenges today.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51Now I have to decide who has done enough to win

0:25:51 > 0:25:52a vital vet work award.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57Morgan and Amblessed made me proud when they worked hard

0:25:57 > 0:26:00and really focused on helping Tobias' precious pet Ingrid.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05Saira and Lauren dealt with Finbar's test results and his operation like

0:26:05 > 0:26:09fully qualified vets, and it's so obvious they love helping animals.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14And Will and Sam were right in the middle of the action

0:26:14 > 0:26:16assisting with Henry's amazing surgery.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21It's so difficult to separate them,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24and I think my decision is going to surprise at least a few of them.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29This has been the most difficult decision so far.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Today's top junior vet is...

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It's all of you!

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Too close a call, but well done, guys.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49I've been blown away by the efforts of all my junior vets today,

0:26:49 > 0:26:53so everyone gets, and fully deserves, a vital vet work award.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59I think we all won because, today, all of us have worked hard.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00It was just a great day for all of us.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04It shows we're all progressing together, as well, which is nice.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06It's not just one person that's helping everybody else,

0:27:06 > 0:27:10we're all sort of growing together, which is really good.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code,

0:27:19 > 0:27:26GOLD008, to unlock a special case in your very own waiting room.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38Penguins and snakes are on the treatment list at the zoo.
