0:01:12 > 0:01:16It took me five hard years to train to be a vet,

0:01:16 > 0:01:20but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23My Junior Vets have hardly been around animals before.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25That's so cool.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Now they are facing real heavy duty vet work.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32It's like everything's just so bonkers.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36- That is amazing. - That's cool.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Have they got the stomach to succeed?

0:01:39 > 0:01:41I feel like a real vet.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43And can they stay calm under extreme pressure?

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Six raw recruits.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53But I can only choose...

0:01:54 > 0:01:56One winner.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22the Head Vet title.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Junior Vets, you're smiling and you have a right to.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28It was impossible to pick out a single winner in the last

0:02:28 > 0:02:30set of challenges.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33You all performed to an exceptionally high standard.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Today's pairings are...

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Amblessed and Lauren.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Saira and Will.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Morgan and Sam.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48There's a packed day of vet work ahead

0:02:48 > 0:02:50working with real animals that need their help.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55I'll be keeping a close eye on everything they do,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59so I can decide who will win today's all important Vital Vet Work award.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03And get one step closer to the coveted Head Vet title.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06The competition is now really close.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Sam's had a mixed start.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10He got off to a flier helping Brie the pony

0:03:10 > 0:03:13but then reacted badly to the surgery on Stella's leg.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Since then he's dug in and dealt with exotic lumps

0:03:16 > 0:03:19and an upside-down pony like a true pro.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Sam's still got time to prove he's up there amongst the leaders.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Lauren might have had a slowish start,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29but she's now showing me her full potential.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31A brilliant understanding of vet work

0:03:31 > 0:03:34has earned her two Vital Vet Work awards in a row,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and she is really racking up the skills credits too.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39She is now on a roll, and she's within touching

0:03:39 > 0:03:42distance of the current leaders, Saira and Will.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53At the Vet School Small Animal Hospital,

0:03:53 > 0:03:57an unusual stray patient needing urgent attention is being

0:03:57 > 0:04:00brought in by Scottish SPCA officer Lee Williams.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03And Lauren and Amblessed are the Junior Vets

0:04:03 > 0:04:05standing by to receive the mystery case.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Aww, tortoise!

0:04:09 > 0:04:10You're absolutely right.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12What's her name?

0:04:12 > 0:04:14We've called her Manfreda.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17So how did you come across the tortoise?

0:04:17 > 0:04:20We got a call from the member of the public who had noticed her

0:04:20 > 0:04:22walking down the side of the road or pavement.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25We don't know whether she has been deliberately abandoned

0:04:25 > 0:04:27or whether she's strayed.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Oww.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32No-one knows how long she had been roaming the streets

0:04:32 > 0:04:35and she could be injured or poorly.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39I felt quite, like, determined to find out what was wrong with her

0:04:39 > 0:04:40and put it right.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Because obviously she was homeless and no-one really cared.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47My Junior Vets must complete an immediate examination.

0:04:47 > 0:04:52Well, she can clearly move her legs, so she's fine there.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55So shall we have a look in her eyes?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58She's got quite small eyes.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59Is it clear or cloudy?

0:04:59 > 0:05:03They're not streaming, they're both the same as well.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06And Lauren spots something unusual.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- Can you see there is a bump on that side?- Yeah.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13That sides like straight. And then there's like a bump there.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15When I saw the lump on the side of Manfreda's head

0:05:15 > 0:05:19I was quite worried especially because it looked quite painful.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21That is quite big, isn't it?

0:05:21 > 0:05:22Yeah.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26This side is straight but she has a bump on that side of her.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27So that's not normal.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33The Junior Vets call in exotics expert Kevin Eatwell for advice.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36That is her eardrum.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38So her eardrum sits on the side of her head,

0:05:38 > 0:05:40if you go back and look at this side,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44You can see the swelling that we've got here is right on that eardrum.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47What is most likely to be happening there is we've probably got

0:05:47 > 0:05:50infection behind it and that's probably going to be surgical.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52We may have to go in and remove this infection.

0:05:53 > 0:05:58Kevin's setting up the little tortoise on the CT scan there.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00I've never seen something like that before.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04This super hi-tech scanner uses high-powered X-ray beams

0:06:04 > 0:06:07which Will pass painlessly through Manfreda.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10A computer then receives information from the scanner and uses it

0:06:10 > 0:06:14to produce a picture of what's hidden behind Manfreda's shell.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18OK guys, the CT scan is finished so we can now come and look at

0:06:18 > 0:06:22the images on the computer and see what's wrong with this tortoise.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24The team's looking for any other problems

0:06:24 > 0:06:26aside from the ear infection.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28What do you see sort of coming through on there?

0:06:28 > 0:06:30- Can you see anything? - Like grey splodges.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33And what do you think these splodges might be?

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- Erm...- Are they the lungs?

0:06:35 > 0:06:37That's the lungs and that looks like normal lung tissue.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40The lungs look really nice on that particular view.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44You could see underneath her shell. So that allowed us

0:06:44 > 0:06:48to see that there was nothing wrong with her breathing.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51But her infected ear needs sorting out - fast.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54The Junior Vets must now scrub in and prepare to help Kevin

0:06:54 > 0:06:55with the tricky operation.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Later, the scale of Manfreda's ear problem is revealed.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04So that's the stuff that needs to come out.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11This is Casper, a slightly deaf boxer,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13who's come for a check-up at a vet's practice

0:07:13 > 0:07:15a few miles away from Vet School.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19His owner Mrs Hedrick thinks Casper has been

0:07:19 > 0:07:22a bit down in the mouth recently.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24She normally leaves her much-loved pet

0:07:24 > 0:07:27in the capable hands of vet Adam Tjole.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30But today, Adam is handing over full responsibility

0:07:30 > 0:07:33to my junior vets Saira and Will.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35They have no idea what might be wrong with Casper,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38and will need to use every bit of their Vet School training

0:07:38 > 0:07:41to get to the bottom of his possible ailments.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I'm a bit nervous because we've actually got

0:07:45 > 0:07:49to go up to Mrs Hedrick now, who I've never seen or met before.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51But I suppose you've just got to do it.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53They'll be completely on their own.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56But Adam has a camera set up that will allow us

0:07:56 > 0:08:00to watch their every move as they complete Casper's consultation.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01Here they come, look.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02Hi, Mrs Hedrick.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04I'm Will.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06He's greeting her nicely. That's good.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08- And who's this? MRS HEDRICK:- This is Casper.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- Hi, Casper. - We'll do a general check-up on him.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- ADAM:- The two of them are both making the dog

0:08:13 > 0:08:16and the owner feel at ease, which is really important.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18'Poorly pets can't explain what is wrong with them.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21'So asking an owner the right kind of questions

0:08:21 > 0:08:23'is an essential vet skill.'

0:08:23 > 0:08:26It was quite challenging to work out what was wrong with Casper,

0:08:26 > 0:08:28because we were on our own.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Will's spotted Casper's sore-looking eyes.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33How long has his eyes been like this, then?

0:08:33 > 0:08:34Because they look a bit red, don't they?

0:08:34 > 0:08:36Good question.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40He has a recurring problem with his eyes.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42And Will's all ears now.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44I think there is a little bit of wax

0:08:44 > 0:08:47but Will just be easy to clean out, so that's good.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Will's reassuring the dog there, isn't he?

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- I think he's working his way around the dog really well.- Yeah.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I'm not sure about Saira if she's doing very much, is she?

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Saira arrived at Vet School very scared of dogs

0:08:58 > 0:09:00and seems happy for Will to take the lead.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02I did kind of take a little bit of a step back

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and Will kind of just took off.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09My mind kind of went a bit blank cos I was a bit nervous.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Has he been eating properly and things like that?

0:09:12 > 0:09:13And running around.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17- MRS HEDRICK:- He has a special diet that's been chicken and rice.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19She asked a good question there about the food.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Has he had any operations or any major things before then?

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Yes, he had an operation in February.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28And what was that on? Was that on his eyes?

0:09:28 > 0:09:30No, no, that was on his leg.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33Is that where he has had his operation?

0:09:33 > 0:09:34Yeah, it's growing again.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36How much has it been growing recently?

0:09:36 > 0:09:37It's growing quickly.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Growing quickly?

0:09:38 > 0:09:41Will's line of questioning has paid off.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45He now knows Casper had a lump removed by Adam six months earlier.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47And it seems to have returned.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Are you surprised how quickly they got to that?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52They've been really confident, they've not got nervous,

0:09:52 > 0:09:54they've asked all the right questions,

0:09:54 > 0:09:57and they've got the answers that we've required, so, brilliant.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00I think we are going to have to get a second look on its eyes.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04They look to be just really sore especially around the socket area.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07And with the leg we need to make sure that it's not been

0:10:07 > 0:10:09infected or anything.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Impressive work so far!

0:10:12 > 0:10:14We're going to take Casper back to Adam

0:10:14 > 0:10:15and report back to him what we found.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18And hopefully we're on the money, but we'll see.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23Later, Will and Saira get to work to make poorly Casper better.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Steady, steady, that's it.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Just 20 minutes from Vet School

0:10:33 > 0:10:36is a colony of 30 rockhopper penguins.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Edinburgh Zoo's Romain Pizzi is on his way to check on Mr Green.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44A rock hopper with a poorly looking eye.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Junior Vets Sam and Morgan will be assisting him today.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50They've been given special permission

0:10:50 > 0:10:52to work behind the scenes here.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55As soon as he said penguins I thought like, yes!

0:10:58 > 0:11:00But the boys need to tread carefully.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Penguins will try to protect their home from intruders...

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Hello...

0:11:07 > 0:11:09..with these snappy beaks.

0:11:11 > 0:11:12So see if you can see him.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15Just take small steps and they won't panic.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18There's penguins everywhere.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21It was so funny, it was the funniest thing,

0:11:21 > 0:11:25cos all the penguins were like squawking around us.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28But how Will the team locate the sore-eyed Mr Green,

0:11:28 > 0:11:30when he looks exactly the same

0:11:30 > 0:11:32as the 29 other resident penguins he lives with?

0:11:32 > 0:11:35Can you move please? You're kind of in the way.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38This is really cool, isn't it?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- Shall we communicate? - HE PRETENDS TO SQUAWK

0:11:41 > 0:11:43We had to find a penguin

0:11:43 > 0:11:46with the green and black ring around its foot.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Just as the rockhoppers begin to lose their patience

0:11:48 > 0:11:52with the search team, Sam spots Mr Green.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54There we go.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55They look quite cute and cuddly,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57but they can actually give you quite a nasty nip.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00And they can be quite grumpy. Come on.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Rockhopper by name, rockhopper by nature.

0:12:03 > 0:12:08So this little guy has been having problems with a weepy sore eye

0:12:08 > 0:12:11so we're going to have a quick look now.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14We're gonna get some drops for you to put in with a little dye

0:12:14 > 0:12:17that will show us if there is any ulcers or an injury

0:12:17 > 0:12:21where another penguin maybe has pecked them in the eye.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Adding dye will make any scratches or injuries on the eyeball

0:12:24 > 0:12:27change colour. Over to Sam for this one.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30You have to squeeze it. It has to be quite a big drop.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31- OK.- Come on. Come on.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33It was quite nerve-racking when I was putting the drop in

0:12:33 > 0:12:36because the penguin just couldn't keep still.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Make a big squeeze so that there's a drop that falls onto the eye.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Sam carefully drops the dye into the first eye.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47Yeah, ready, go, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. Brilliant.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50But Morgan is finding the other eye more challenging.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52There we go. Yep, oop, you missed.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Don't get too close to the eye cos you'll injure it.

0:12:55 > 0:12:56It must drop onto the eye.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Third time lucky or otherwise I'll have to do it.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01There you go, perfect.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04But he finally completes the job.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07So has Mr Green suffered any injuries?

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- We shine a little light on the eye. - And there's nothing there.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13And there's no marks on there so he hasn't been pecked on the eye.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16Perfect. He's not badly injured.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Romain thinks the rockhopper has had nothing more than a sore, runny eye!

0:13:20 > 0:13:24And Mr Green is rewarded with a soothing bath in the plunge pool.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25There we go.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37Later, Sam and Morgan's next patient is a fanged predator!

0:13:37 > 0:13:38Don't keep your face right over here

0:13:38 > 0:13:42because he's all uptight. He'll come shooting out towards your face.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50My Junior Vets are completing an intensive training programme

0:13:50 > 0:13:52here at Vet School.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Each session is designed to prepare them

0:13:54 > 0:13:58for handling real animals in real situations.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00For impressive training zone performances,

0:14:00 > 0:14:02I give out Vet Skill Credits.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Along with the all-important Vital Vet Work awards,

0:14:05 > 0:14:10these will help me decide who will eventually be named Head Vet.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13And today's training zone session will test

0:14:13 > 0:14:17my Junior Vets' practical skills and their animal handling abilities.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19They have already learned

0:14:19 > 0:14:23how important dressings are to injured animals.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25They protect healing wounds from infection

0:14:25 > 0:14:28and prevent pets picking at stitches.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31For this test, I've recruited three willing volunteers.

0:14:31 > 0:14:32Awww.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Real dogs!

0:14:34 > 0:14:35Meet Copper, Otis and Alfie.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37It's a real dog!

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Right, Junior Vets, let the challenge begin.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45Working as a team...

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Good boy.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50..the Junior Vets must neatly bandage one paw per pair.

0:14:50 > 0:14:51We do this one.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Will and Saira show great team work skills from the off...

0:14:56 > 0:14:59So it needs to be quite small, as it's got a small foot.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01..and hatch a plan to bandage Otis...

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- And you do this one and I'll do the last two, yeah?- Yep.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06..who looks more than happy with their work so far.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Bend that down.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Lauren occupies Alfie while Amblessed works quickly

0:15:11 > 0:15:12and neatly on the dressing.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- And then round, yeah.- OK.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Morgan, I'll just prepare the stuff, Morgan?

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- Morgan? Morgan?- Yeah.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Come and prepare the stuff with me.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Sam needs Morgan's help

0:15:25 > 0:15:28if they are ever going to finish Copper's bandage.

0:15:28 > 0:15:29Put that there.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33OK.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35A good bandage fits snugly around the wound.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37I think I have done it a little loose.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40I would take that off and start again, actually.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42That's too loose. So it's a restart for Team Otis.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45And just go round.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Junior Vets, you've got a couple of minutes left.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49This is a tricky test.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54And Morgan looks like he's losing his rag a little.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57Alfie doesn't know what all the fuss is about.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Good boy.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03His Junior Vets, Lauren and Amblessed, are the first to finish.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05OK everyone, that's a wrap!

0:16:05 > 0:16:06Blame it on you.

0:16:06 > 0:16:07I heard that, Morgan!

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Don't blame it on the dog.

0:16:10 > 0:16:15So who did the neatest bandaging and kept their dog calm in the process?

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I loved seeing Lauren and Amblessed work so tightly

0:16:17 > 0:16:19and precisely together.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22So I'm giving them a Vet Skill Credit each.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24You can see how you get on as a virtual vet

0:16:24 > 0:16:28in the Junior Vets game on the CBBC website.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30And don't forget to look for the special game code

0:16:30 > 0:16:32at the end of today's show!

0:16:45 > 0:16:47In the Vet School Small Animal Hospital,

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Manfreda the abandoned tortoise is about to have surgery to remove

0:16:51 > 0:16:53an infected lump from her head.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00Junior Vets Amblessed and Lauren are helping exotic animal vet Kevin.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06They need to remove a painful pocket of pus from the tortoise's ear.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08OK Lauren, I'm ready to start surgery,

0:17:08 > 0:17:13- are you happy the tortoise is asleep and doing OK?- Yep.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17- What's the heart rate at the minute? - 24.- OK.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19Lauren was monitoring the anaesthetic

0:17:19 > 0:17:23and I was helping with the operation.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26It was quite exciting doing Manfreda's anaesthetic.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29If something goes wrong, then she could die.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31You see that sort of yellow stuff?

0:17:31 > 0:17:32Yeah.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Your ear cavity should be empty

0:17:34 > 0:17:36and what we've got here is solid yellow material.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39So that's the stuff that needs to come out.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43Removing the infected area is a delicate procedure

0:17:43 > 0:17:45and requires Kevin's expert hands.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46Are you ready for the gooey bit?

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Kevin gets to the pus-filled ear.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51And that basically is the pus.

0:17:53 > 0:17:58And two massive pieces of pus are removed from Manfreda's tiny head.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01The surgery has finished. You can now just wake up.

0:18:02 > 0:18:03But before she can come round,

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Manfreda needs a blast of antibiotics.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11Then I'm just going to inject this under the skin.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13As Manfreda is allowed to steadily wake up,

0:18:13 > 0:18:16Lauren must use a pump to keep oxygen moving

0:18:16 > 0:18:17through her delicate body.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25And the next day, Manfreda is up and about.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27Hi!

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Infection-free and breathing well.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- She's doing well, isn't she? - Yeah.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40It's good to see her eating as well.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Good night, darling, bye bye.

0:18:43 > 0:18:44Bye, Manfreda.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Both my Junior Vets showed real attention to detail today.

0:18:49 > 0:18:53She was probably in distress with her head

0:18:53 > 0:18:56and I suspect it was giving her a really bad earache,

0:18:56 > 0:18:58and she probably was quite deaf from it as well.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02And hopefully getting her back to full hearing

0:19:02 > 0:19:04will help her in the long term,

0:19:04 > 0:19:06and I think she will be much happier.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09And things got even better for Manfreda.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12She's now fully recovered and she has a new home!

0:19:18 > 0:19:22Back at the practice near Vet School, Will and Saira have

0:19:22 > 0:19:27completed their first animal consultation all by themselves.

0:19:27 > 0:19:31They've given 11-year-old Casper a thorough examination.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33And quizzing Casper's owner has helped them

0:19:33 > 0:19:35discover problems that need investigating.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37How long has his eyes been like this, then?

0:19:37 > 0:19:39Because they look a bit red, don't they?

0:19:39 > 0:19:42I've been watching their every move with vet Adam Tjole.

0:19:42 > 0:19:47And now the Junior Vets are ready to report their findings.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Well done, guys. So what have you found for me today?

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Well, other than the bloodshot eyes,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54which look to be quite sore around the socket as well,

0:19:54 > 0:19:57we found where he has had an operation on his leg before.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00There is a scar and it seems to be swollen.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Well, I was watching you on the television,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07and you did really well to find those lumps.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10Will and Saira were clearly on to something.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12Adam takes a closer look at Casper's leg.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15You can actually see there's one lump there and there's another lump.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18It's almost shows that the lump is spreading and that is a sign

0:20:18 > 0:20:21that it could be something that's not particularly nice.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25That's probably a lump that I would want to remove.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Saira also suspected Casper might have an eye problem.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31OK, Saira, what did you find out about his eyes?

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Well, they are very red,

0:20:33 > 0:20:35and you can see that straight away by looking at him.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37They do look a bit bloodshot.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42And near the socket they seem to be a little worse.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46Casper has previously suffered from something called 'dry eye'.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50The team must test if the dangerous condition has returned.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53So what we're going to do is we're going to put these little

0:20:53 > 0:20:55strips in his eye.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58Saira is using a special strip of paper that will allow them

0:20:58 > 0:21:01to measure the amount of teardrops

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Casper is producing from his tear ducts.

0:21:03 > 0:21:04Just on the bottom there.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Yeah, that's it.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08That's OK. You can pop it in there.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09It's quite hard to get it in.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11It was kind of tricky

0:21:11 > 0:21:13because you were shoving a paper into a dog's eyeball.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15One, you didn't know if it was going to hurt

0:21:15 > 0:21:18and second, it was just a little bit weird.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Fantastic. See, can you see there is a blue line

0:21:21 > 0:21:25- that's appearing on the eye there? - Yeah.- And we want a reading below 10.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27That's good, it's already below 10.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30So that means he's got plenty of tears.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34Casper's tear ducts are fine. The 'dry eye' has not returned.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37So what was causing Casper's bloodshot eyes?

0:21:37 > 0:21:39- Two drops.- Two drops.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41This yellow dye might give us some clues.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45Any sore areas or infections will mean it quickly changes to green.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Can you see any green patches on his eye?

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Yeah, I can see a little bit.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52- There's a bit. - I think sort of in the middle.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- Yeah there's a little bit of haziness, isn't there?- Yeah.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57So he's got a slightly infected eye, so what we'll do is

0:21:57 > 0:22:01we will treat that, but apart from that his eyes are pretty good.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Do you want to go and take him back to Mrs Hedrick?

0:22:03 > 0:22:04- Hmm.- Brilliant.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Both Junior Vets looked like fully qualified vets today.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- Hello, Mrs Hedrick.- Hello.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13We've looked at its eyes and they seemed to be doing fine.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16They've got the right amount of tears and not dry at all.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Will was really confident, he asked the right questions,

0:22:19 > 0:22:22he was really good with Casper.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24I think he'll make a fantastic vet.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28With regards to his leg, we found three lumps on his leg.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32So if you could bring him in next week to have a check on that,

0:22:32 > 0:22:33that would be great.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36And Casper and a relieved Mrs Hedrick

0:22:36 > 0:22:40can go home for a well-earned rest.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Over at the zoo,

0:22:48 > 0:22:51Morgan and Sam are assisting vet Romain Pizzi.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Next up is a new resident who is moving here from another zoo

0:22:54 > 0:22:57and is currently taking a nap in a rubbish bin!

0:22:57 > 0:22:58Three...two...one.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02It's not heavy. I thought it was going to be heavy.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Before they get to work with this mystery patient,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06Romain gives them a safety briefing.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Don't keep your face right over here,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11because he's all uptight he'll come shooting out towards your face.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14So we always stand back a little bit and I'll open this towards me

0:23:14 > 0:23:16just so I can see where he is.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18And the reason for the safety briefing...

0:23:18 > 0:23:19Ah, wow.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23Our new arrival is a Taiwanese beauty snake called Petite.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25This snake is a particular favourite animal of mine

0:23:25 > 0:23:29so I was really, really excited. It was so cool, that.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32My Junior Vets need to check Petite has no infectious

0:23:32 > 0:23:35diseases before he can join the rest of the snakes here.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38But there's a problem. Morgan doesn't like snakes.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40At all!

0:23:40 > 0:23:45When the snake first came out of the bin that it was in, I shook a bit.

0:23:45 > 0:23:46- Do you want to hold his body?- Yeah.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49So what you do is you just cup your hands and let him rest on them.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51You don't want to grab him or squeeze him.

0:23:51 > 0:23:56Petite isn't venomous. But a bite from him would definitely hurt!

0:23:56 > 0:23:59Well done for overcoming your fears, Morgan. Very brave handling.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02If you want to be like a vet or a zookeeper you're obviously

0:24:02 > 0:24:05going to be working with animals that you don't really like.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07The Junior Vets can now start checking Petite

0:24:07 > 0:24:09for signs of illness and disease.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11If he's fit and healthy,

0:24:11 > 0:24:14he'll be allowed to move in with the other resident snakes.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17- You can see its heart beating there. - What's that?- Wow.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19So know you're very lucky cause that's quite easy to see in him

0:24:19 > 0:24:22but in some snakes the heart sits between the ribs

0:24:22 > 0:24:24and we can't even see it. So we have to measure the body.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- So that is why the heart is positioned there.- Yeah.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29Petite is looking in great shape on the outside.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32PETITE'S HEART BEATS SLOWLY

0:24:32 > 0:24:35And is sounding all good on the inside.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37We've put ultrasound gel on the snake

0:24:37 > 0:24:40and we're checking the heartbeat.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42It's sounding healthy.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46So at the moment we're looking through the ultrasound

0:24:46 > 0:24:48and we're having a look into its heart

0:24:48 > 0:24:53and inside the body just to see if there is anything wrong.

0:24:53 > 0:24:54Romain is happy.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57Brilliant, let's pop him back in his box.

0:24:57 > 0:24:58Thanks to my Junior Vets' help,

0:24:58 > 0:25:02he is confident Petite is in tip-top shape, inside and out.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05He'll be allowed to live out his life in the comfort

0:25:05 > 0:25:07of the zoo's reptile enclosure.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Today was a very good experience

0:25:09 > 0:25:11working with the penguins and the snake.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14I'm not a fan of snakes, but I think I overcame my fear.

0:25:14 > 0:25:15I loved working with the snake

0:25:15 > 0:25:18and the penguins were really good as well.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21So yeah, it definitely pushed me.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Amazing hands-on work by my Junior Vets today.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27And, thanks to them, Petite has a comfortable new home!

0:25:37 > 0:25:41It's getting harder and harder for me to separate my Junior Vets.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45But I have to decide between them

0:25:45 > 0:25:47and choose who gets today's Vital Vet Work award.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53As always, Amblessed concentrated brilliantly on the job,

0:25:53 > 0:25:55while Lauren showed off some impressive

0:25:55 > 0:25:58anaesthetist skills in Manfreda's operation.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03I loved the way Sam kept looking for new ways to get involved.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06And he did a great job of motivating Morgan and helping him

0:26:06 > 0:26:08overcome his snake fears.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11Will and Saira made me so proud

0:26:11 > 0:26:14going it alone in Casper's consultation.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18It was Will who led the way and his confidence is now sky-high.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20But Vital Vet Work awards are only given to

0:26:20 > 0:26:24the very best performances. And I've now made my decision.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28Junior Vets, three individuals stood out today.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30And they are...

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Will.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Sam.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43And Lauren.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48But it's not just me who's been impressed.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52All three made a real impact on the vets they were helping.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Every one of them deserves their Vital Vet Work awards.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59- It feels amazing to win. - It's a great feeling to win, yeah.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01It feels really good.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03I think I won because I was enthusiastic about the animal

0:27:03 > 0:27:07because I like the animal and I also think I did a good job.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10I asked the right questions and it went towards saving the dog,

0:27:10 > 0:27:12which was really happy.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15I think we won because we were just all good and we worked well.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?

0:27:18 > 0:27:22Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code,

0:27:22 > 0:27:27dance229, to unlock a special case in your very own waiting room!

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Tuppence the dog has high-tech treatment,

0:27:35 > 0:27:37crocs Bob and Bindi get a bit bothered

0:27:37 > 0:27:39when the vet team enters their lair,

0:27:39 > 0:27:42and Junior Vets power up to help Trixie the pony.
