0:01:11 > 0:01:12I'm Paul Manktelow.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15It took me five hard years to train to be a vet
0:01:15 > 0:01:20but this lot have only weeks to show me what they're made of.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23My junior vets have hardly been around animals before.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24That's so cool.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Now they are facing real, heavy-duty vet work.
0:01:27 > 0:01:32It's like everything's just so bonkers.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36- That is amazing. - That's cool.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38Have they got the stomach to succeed?
0:01:38 > 0:01:40I feel like a real vet.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43And can they stay calm under extreme pressure?
0:01:46 > 0:01:48Six raw recruits.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54But I can only choose...
0:01:54 > 0:01:55one winner.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58The first ever junior vet

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Now they're hungry for even bigger vet work challenges.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23And I'm not going to disappoint them.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28Junior Vets, welcome back to vet school. Today's working pairs are...
0:02:30 > 0:02:35..Will and Amblessed. Saira and Sam. Lauren and Morgan.
0:02:35 > 0:02:36Let's get down to business.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41Today they're going to handle some cool kit
0:02:41 > 0:02:43and some very tricky patients.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49And I'll be getting updates on everything they do.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52Only the very best junior vets will win today's all important
0:02:52 > 0:02:58Vital Vet Work award, helping me decide who I'll name Head Vet.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01The race for the title is hotting up.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03Joint leader Will is on fire.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06He's won the last four Vital Vet Work awards.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Can you see any green patches on his eye?
0:03:09 > 0:03:10Yeah, I can see a little bit.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12He's a brilliant communicator...
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Junior vet receiving, over.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17..and takes every job, big or small, in his stride.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Morgan started more slowly
0:03:21 > 0:03:24but he's now knuckling down and is beginning to impress me.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27He's had some great flashes of inspiration.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29- What do you think that is there? - Could it be the bladder?
0:03:29 > 0:03:31That's correct. Good man.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34And, last time, tackled his fears of snakes full on.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36Do you want to hold his body?
0:03:36 > 0:03:37If he continues like this,
0:03:37 > 0:03:41there's no reason why he can't catch current leaders Will and Saira.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52At the Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian,
0:03:52 > 0:03:55Saira and Sam have a big job on their hands...
0:03:55 > 0:03:57Come on in.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59..with these snappy, dangerous reptiles.
0:04:01 > 0:04:03What have we got for you here?
0:04:03 > 0:04:04Crocodiles.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07Crocodiles! That is so bad.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09- Scary looking?- Yeah.
0:04:09 > 0:04:12Well, you are about to go...
0:04:12 > 0:04:14in there.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16No, thanks.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19Bob and Bindi are West African dwarf crocodiles
0:04:19 > 0:04:22and my junior vets need to help exotic animal vet
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Kevin Eatwell take an important blood sample from the pair.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28They're looking at us as if to say, "I don't like you."
0:04:29 > 0:04:32West African dwarf croc numbers are dropping in the wild,
0:04:32 > 0:04:34so they're being specially bred in European zoos
0:04:34 > 0:04:36in an effort to protect the species.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41Today's blood sample will decide
0:04:41 > 0:04:45if Bob and Bindi can be part of the very important project.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47I was absolutely mortified.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50We were standing outside its enclosure just looking at them
0:04:50 > 0:04:51and they were staring at us.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54I was really scared.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57This is Sam and Saira's toughest challenge so far.
0:04:57 > 0:05:01These are extremely dangerous animals.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04So when you go in there, you need to work very fast.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07You need to work as part of that team and you need to be
0:05:07 > 0:05:10very observant and make sure you know where the danger is. OK?
0:05:10 > 0:05:13- OK.- OK. - OK, in you go.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16It's not just those razor-sharp teeth that are dangerous,
0:05:16 > 0:05:20Bob and Bindi's strong tails can also cause a lot of damage.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23Before the vet team enter the crocodile's lair,
0:05:23 > 0:05:27specially-trained handlers help secure those powerful jaws.
0:05:27 > 0:05:28It's so dangerous, isn't it?
0:05:28 > 0:05:30Yeah, very dangerous.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33They've just restrained the crocodile and they're taping up
0:05:33 > 0:05:37the mouth and they've got the tail, which is dangerous.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39Both me and Sam were dead nervous
0:05:39 > 0:05:41when we went into the crocodile enclosure.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43Right, Junior Vets, you can come in.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46We didn't know how the crocodiles would react
0:05:46 > 0:05:48and they looked quite vicious and deadly.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55Now that Bob and Bindi are secure and calm,
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Sam and Saira can start their work.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01I want you to check the chip is in place in the back of its head.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04They need to make sure they know which sample is from which croc.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07So Saira has to scan a computer chip that's been inserted
0:06:07 > 0:06:10- under their skin.- So if you can write down the chip number.
0:06:10 > 0:06:11To join the breeding programme,
0:06:11 > 0:06:14both crocodiles need to be in perfect health.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17First Kevin looks at Bob's razor-sharp teeth.
0:06:17 > 0:06:18These are quite old.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21This is not a job for the junior vets.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24So you can see these are pushing in here.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26It did have some damage down here, but they look OK.
0:06:26 > 0:06:30- We've lost a tooth here, look.- Yeah. - But they're not actually too bad.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33Great. Bob's teeth are in decent shape,
0:06:33 > 0:06:35and that's a good sign of a healthy croc.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Now Kevin and his team move on to Bob's tail.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41This is where they'll attempt to take the blood sample from.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43He needs Sam's help for this.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46Covered in sort of mud and water and things so we're going to try
0:06:46 > 0:06:48and keep this as clean as we can do.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52I thought we'd just be there helping pass things, but obviously not.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55I was just really scared.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57It won't be easy.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00Bob's tail is covered in really thick bony scales.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03And now Kevin needs Sam to keep a firm grip on it!
0:07:03 > 0:07:05I need you to help me hold this tail still.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07I need you to hold the tail like that for me
0:07:07 > 0:07:09because he's going to be lively.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Sam keeps hold
0:07:11 > 0:07:14as Kevin tries to find an entry point between those hard scales.
0:07:14 > 0:07:18We can't see veins in these, we just have to kind of know where they are.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20It's a heavy tail.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22It's a very heavy and strong tail.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28Got it! Kevin takes the all-important blood sample from Bob.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30Right, that's going straight into an EDTA pot.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32But Sam's work isn't done yet.
0:07:32 > 0:07:34He must make sure Bob is safely restrained
0:07:34 > 0:07:36while Kevin completes his work.
0:07:36 > 0:07:37Do you want me to let go of the tail?
0:07:37 > 0:07:40No, you are not letting go of the tail, you are continuing to
0:07:40 > 0:07:43restrain the tail now because you're helping Becky keep him still.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46Bob can now be returned to his pool.
0:07:46 > 0:07:47But that's only half of the work done.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51The junior vets have still got to deal with Bob's partner Bindi.
0:07:51 > 0:07:52And she is much feistier!
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Coming up. Bindi puts up a big struggle.
0:07:58 > 0:07:59And Sam feels the fear.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08Tower Farm riding stables on the outskirts of Edinburgh,
0:08:08 > 0:08:09home to 15-year-old Trixie.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15Trixie's owner thinks her Welsh pony may have a problem with her teeth
0:08:15 > 0:08:19and has called in a top veterinary team to investigate.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22Lauren and Morgan are joining up with equine vet Matt Hanks
0:08:22 > 0:08:24to help fix Trixie's teeth.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29Right, the first thing we're going to do is check this horse's heart
0:08:29 > 0:08:32to make sure that it's all nice and healthy. OK?
0:08:32 > 0:08:35My junior vets are now fully trained in using a stethoscope.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37Can you hear the heart, Lauren?
0:08:37 > 0:08:39- Oh, yeah, I can now.- OK.
0:08:39 > 0:08:43If Trixie's heart is healthy, it will be beating at between 35
0:08:43 > 0:08:45and 45 beats per minute.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47I think it's about 40.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Perfect, that sounds very healthy. Good job.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52We want to look in the horse's mouth, look at the colour
0:08:52 > 0:08:56of the gums because the heart pumps the blood around the body.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59We want to make sure that the blood is getting to the end of the body.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01And that means a gum inspection.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03- Do you want me to go first? - No, it doesn't matter.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06- Over to Morgan. - Hands there, Morgan.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08But Morgan has refused messy jobs in the past.
0:09:08 > 0:09:13Are you not bothered by the smell? I'm going to be sick.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15- Are you sure you don't want a feel? - No, I don't.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17That's the smelly one.
0:09:17 > 0:09:18I thought that we were just going to look.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20Excellent.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23But I had to put my hand in, which I was uncomfortable with.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25Nice and pink. Lovely. Good job.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27Happy with that.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29Trixie's gums look and feel in good shape.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31Good girl.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34But the team need a close-up inspection of her teeth.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37Trixie's a little nervous so she's given a sedative to relax her.
0:09:37 > 0:09:39All done.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42While Trixie starts to relax, Matt needs to be sure
0:09:42 > 0:09:46the junior vets understand the equipment that they will be using.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50So the first thing we've got is a gag, and this thing here
0:09:50 > 0:09:55goes into Trixie's mouth and it's going to open her mouth up
0:09:55 > 0:09:58so we can then look at her teeth safely without getting bitten.
0:09:58 > 0:10:02Then what we're going to be doing is we're going to be rasping her teeth.
0:10:02 > 0:10:03So what is rasping?
0:10:03 > 0:10:06The problem is we feed our horses good diets.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10So rather than having to grind their food as they would do in the wild,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13all they need to do is move their mouth up and down
0:10:13 > 0:10:15and it doesn't knock the sharp points off.
0:10:15 > 0:10:16So we had to do it for them.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19We can also use machines such as this.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22And this has got a rotating disk on the end...
0:10:22 > 0:10:24which will grind her teeth down.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27I was quite worried that I would hurt Trixie
0:10:27 > 0:10:29just because it's a big mechanical thing.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32This really is a big job for my junior vets.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36They have got the tools, but can they complete the work successfully?
0:10:36 > 0:10:40Later, the team power up in an attempt to treat Trixie's gnashers!
0:10:46 > 0:10:50At the vet school's small animal hospital,
0:10:50 > 0:10:53Tuppence has arrived for treatment.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56This brave little Jack Russell comes here every week for treatment
0:10:56 > 0:10:58that could save his life.
0:10:58 > 0:11:03You wouldn't know it, but Tuppence is a very poorly pet.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06When he was born, he wasn't breathing
0:11:06 > 0:11:09but they managed to revive him
0:11:09 > 0:11:13and he hasn't had anything wrong with him whatsoever
0:11:13 > 0:11:19until this spindle cell was discovered in his eye.
0:11:19 > 0:11:24Tuppence suffers from a rare form of cancer called spindle cell sarcoma.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26And he's already had an eye removed.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33And today he has junior vets Amblessed and Will at his side
0:11:33 > 0:11:35to help him through his next round of treatment.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38- Hello.- Oh, hello. - Hi, I'm Will.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41I'd never really seen a dog with only one eye.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44- So it was sort of new to me. - I'm Amblessed.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46Pleased to meet you.
0:11:46 > 0:11:47So is this Tuppence?
0:11:47 > 0:11:51This is Tuppence, yes, he's just over nine years old.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54I thought Tuppence was cute because he was quite playful.
0:11:54 > 0:11:58So is it OK if we take her through there now?
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Yes, surely.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04My junior vets are teaming up with vet Iain Grant.
0:12:04 > 0:12:05He's an oncologist,
0:12:05 > 0:12:07a cancer expert, and has looked after Tuppence
0:12:07 > 0:12:10since he first started coming here.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12Tuppence doesn't have an eye.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15You're right. He doesn't have his left eye.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18And the reason he doesn't have his left eye is because we removed it,
0:12:18 > 0:12:22and we removed it because he had a tumour on the upper eyelid.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26We try to remove the cancer cells if we can with an operation.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29But unfortunately we weren't able to remove them all with the operation.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35In a bid to cure his cancer,
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Tuppence is having super-high-tech treatment.
0:12:39 > 0:12:40Deep inside vet school,
0:12:40 > 0:12:44in a concrete encased bunker, lies the linear accelerator!
0:12:45 > 0:12:49It uses laser-guided, high-energy radiation beams to pinpoint
0:12:49 > 0:12:51and zap diseased cells.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56It looks a bit scary but it could finally cure Tuppence.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58And today, he's all set for another blast!
0:12:59 > 0:13:03First, Tuppence is anaesthetised as he needs to be kept
0:13:03 > 0:13:05perfectly still for this treatment.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08My junior vets are in the heart of the control room bunker
0:13:08 > 0:13:11as the medical team get everything ready.
0:13:12 > 0:13:16In this area behind us, the walls are, remarkably, six feet thick,
0:13:16 > 0:13:18there's six feet of concrete.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21And the reason for that is that we don't want the radiation
0:13:21 > 0:13:23to escape out of the room.
0:13:23 > 0:13:26This high-energy radiation is potentially very harmful.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30We don't want to harm the rest of Tuppence's body
0:13:30 > 0:13:32we just want to damage the cancer cells
0:13:32 > 0:13:34at the site of the previous tumour.
0:13:34 > 0:13:38The high energy rays will be aimed using green lasers.
0:13:44 > 0:13:47I hoped that the equipment would help Tuppence a lot
0:13:47 > 0:13:50so that all the cancer cells would be removed.
0:13:53 > 0:13:58Everything is finally in place for Tuppence's radiation therapy.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00Coming up...
0:14:00 > 0:14:03the junior vets get Tuppence's high-tech treatment under way.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05OK, everybody's out.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13My junior vets are completing an intensive training programme
0:14:13 > 0:14:14here at Vet School.
0:14:16 > 0:14:18Each session is designed to prepare them
0:14:18 > 0:14:22for handling real animals in real situations
0:14:22 > 0:14:25For impressive training zone performances,
0:14:25 > 0:14:27I give out vet skills credits.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52If you would like to remove the drapes in front of you

0:14:56 > 0:14:57God, it's massive.
0:14:57 > 0:15:00Exotics animal vet Kevin has brought along
0:15:00 > 0:15:04some of his favourite critters to help me train my junior vets.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06What is that?
0:15:06 > 0:15:08They'll need to keep calm when picking them up.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10Aww.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12I don't like rats.
0:15:12 > 0:15:16Rodent-fearing Lauren gets things going with a huge rat!
0:15:16 > 0:15:20I don't want to drop it, but I really don't like it.
0:15:20 > 0:15:24It's an edgy start, but Lauren steadies her nerves and keeps hold.
0:15:24 > 0:15:25It's quite soft.
0:15:27 > 0:15:31The leopard gecko and bearded dragon are next up for Sam and Saira.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33I'm feeling a bit nervous now.
0:15:33 > 0:15:34Oh, it's really weird.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39Sam's nervy around reptiles.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42But Saira's gentle touch is very impressive.
0:15:42 > 0:15:43It's kind of cute.
0:15:43 > 0:15:45Animals sense it when people are scared.
0:15:45 > 0:15:46I don't want to.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49You need to handle with confidence...
0:15:49 > 0:15:50It's really strong.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53..as Lauren shows with her corn snake.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55Morgan finally gets to grips with a royal python!
0:15:55 > 0:15:57OK.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59It's smelling me.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04But how is Will going to cope with a bad-tempered guinea pig.
0:16:06 > 0:16:08It's OK.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12- Oh!- Yep. Cross or nervous guinea pigs can nip!
0:16:14 > 0:16:18It doesn't feel, like, slimy, it feels quite dry.
0:16:18 > 0:16:20Will could learn something
0:16:20 > 0:16:22from Amblessed's calm and collected handling skills.
0:16:22 > 0:16:24And so could Morgan!
0:16:24 > 0:16:26Ah, it's peeing.
0:16:26 > 0:16:27What a mess!
0:16:31 > 0:16:32It's weed all down his top.
0:16:34 > 0:16:38Finally, everyone must take a turn with each animal
0:16:38 > 0:16:41as we look for the coolest and most confident junior vets.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43I'll calm her down first.
0:16:43 > 0:16:47So who stayed in control when things got hairy in the training zone?
0:16:50 > 0:16:53I have to hand it to Saira, confident and calm throughout.
0:16:53 > 0:16:57And Lauren who bravely faced up to her fear of rats.
0:16:57 > 0:16:59Both were rewarded with vet skills credits.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03You can see how you get on as a virtual vet
0:17:03 > 0:17:06in the Junior Vets game on the CBBC website.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08And don't forget to look for the special game code
0:17:08 > 0:17:10at the end of today's show.
0:17:17 > 0:17:23At Tower Farm riding stables, Trixie the pony needs urgent dental work.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Luckily, junior vets Lauren and Morgan are on hand to help out.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29Now you guide this into her mouth there, Lauren.
0:17:29 > 0:17:30OK.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32That's it, just down a bit. There we go, we're in.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Now that Trixie's sedated,
0:17:34 > 0:17:38she doesn't mind at all as the junior vets get to work.
0:17:38 > 0:17:39- OK.- That's perfect there, OK.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42The gag will hold her mouth safely open.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44If Morgan can set it in position.
0:17:44 > 0:17:45Go on, Morgan, you can do it.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47Bit more. Go on.
0:17:50 > 0:17:51No, I can't do it.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53Back to Lauren for this one.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56Oh, good job. Excellent. That's perfect.
0:17:56 > 0:17:57Good girl.
0:17:57 > 0:17:59That does the trick.
0:17:59 > 0:18:00There you go, Morgan.
0:18:00 > 0:18:03First Trixie's mouth needs a good rinse to get rid of food
0:18:03 > 0:18:05trapped between her teeth.
0:18:05 > 0:18:11This is weird just squirting water in a horse's mouth.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14Horses' teeth never stop growing, so they need grinding down,
0:18:14 > 0:18:16by a vet, at least once a year.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18This job is called rasping.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21We're going to go in there and try and cut some of the enamel off.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23So we do it like this.
0:18:23 > 0:18:24We pop it into the horse's mouth.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27Find the tooth that we want to rasp. And then...
0:18:29 > 0:18:31You can see it on the outside of her mouth.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33- Yeah. You hear it?- Yeah.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35It won't hurt her, will it, this?
0:18:35 > 0:18:39It doesn't hurt at all, so it's like trimming your fingernails.
0:18:39 > 0:18:41Matt carefully files down all the jagged edges
0:18:41 > 0:18:43on Trixie's teeth with the hand rasp.
0:18:45 > 0:18:47And then, out come the power tools.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49This feels like a job for Morgan.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53You don't pull the trigger until I say.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55- Yeah, I know.- Agreed.- Agreed.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58I was nervous because I didn't want to harm Trixie whatsoever.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00OK, it will go there.
0:19:00 > 0:19:01Yep, perfect, stop.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08I love this. This is so cool.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10OK, that's the rasping done,
0:19:10 > 0:19:13let's have a feel to make sure the mouth is nice and smooth.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15Morgan needs to confirm they haven't left
0:19:15 > 0:19:18any dangerous jagged edges on Trixie's teeth.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20That's so cool.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23That means reaching right to the back of Trixie's huge mouth!
0:19:23 > 0:19:24Can you feel all the teeth?
0:19:24 > 0:19:26Yeah. All smooth.
0:19:26 > 0:19:28Good job. Have a feel, Lauren.
0:19:28 > 0:19:29Yep. Wow.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32And Lauren double-checks the team's heavy-duty dentistry.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34Feel any sharp points?
0:19:34 > 0:19:37That side is all smooth.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40I've never put my hand inside a horse's mouth before.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42And it was surprisingly warm.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44That one's smooth as well.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46- Great.- Yep. - Good job done. We're finished.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48- Good girl.- Excellent.
0:19:49 > 0:19:53Pony dentistry done, and Trixie's teeth are now in tip top shape.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56Lauren and Morgan got on really well as a team today.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59Lauren took the lead and really pushed things forward.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01But at the end, Morgan really pulled it out of the bag.
0:20:01 > 0:20:02I found that really cool.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04I liked putting my hand into the horse's mouth.
0:20:04 > 0:20:06Feeling around
0:20:06 > 0:20:08and then putting my hand on the teeth afterwards, smooth.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12This experience has probably made me want to be a vet even more now.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15And I think it's pushed me in the direction of horses now as well.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17Because it's my second time with horses
0:20:17 > 0:20:21And both experiences have been really, really, really good.
0:20:21 > 0:20:22A truly hands-on,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25HANDS-IN, veterinary experience for my junior vets.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27And Trixie won't need a check-up for a whole year!
0:20:34 > 0:20:38Back at Vet School, Tuppence the Jack Russell is about to have
0:20:38 > 0:20:40radiation therapy.
0:20:40 > 0:20:44He has spindle cell sarcoma cancer, which has led him to losing an eye.
0:20:45 > 0:20:49Exposure to high energy beams can be dangerous to humans.
0:20:49 > 0:20:53My junior vets Will and Amblessed are keeping watch
0:20:53 > 0:20:55from the control room next door.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00I was quite surprised that a really big bit of equipment
0:21:00 > 0:21:02was used on a small dog
0:21:02 > 0:21:04Tuppence is set.
0:21:04 > 0:21:05Ready?
0:21:05 > 0:21:09Everyone's out. Now the linear accelerator can be turned on.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14Short bursts of high energy radiation are aimed
0:21:14 > 0:21:16at the cancer cells and begin to destroy them.
0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's over in seconds.
0:21:21 > 0:21:24Tuppence is still unconscious and is immediately transferred to
0:21:24 > 0:21:26a recovery bed with his own comfy blanket.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31He usually comes round quite quickly.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34My junior vets need to check Tuppence's heart and breathing.
0:21:36 > 0:21:39And thankfully they give him an all clear!
0:21:39 > 0:21:40He's been really well
0:21:40 > 0:21:44and I think that it hasn't hugely affected him in any way.
0:21:44 > 0:21:48At last, Tuppence comes round from his anaesthetic.
0:21:50 > 0:21:52And is revived with a tasty biscuit.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55It's important to give them a treat
0:21:55 > 0:21:58because, one, they might be hungry and, two, it's the first thing
0:21:58 > 0:22:02they'll remember if you give them a treat, so they won't be scared.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04Tuppence is a bit wobbly,
0:22:04 > 0:22:07but he's made it through yet another potentially life-saving
0:22:07 > 0:22:10radiation therapy session.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14This has been a completely different type of vet work for my junior vets.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16Have they impressed vet Iain?
0:22:16 > 0:22:19I think they were really interested, really smart,
0:22:19 > 0:22:21they knew lots of good questions.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23Just really, really good to work with.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27It's really nice to know that you've helped Tuppence
0:22:27 > 0:22:30because it makes you feel proud of yourself.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32He's been really good, thank you.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34Oh, that's fine, thank you very much.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36- Hope to see you next time, bye. - Yes, thank you, bye-bye.
0:22:36 > 0:22:38Bye.
0:22:38 > 0:22:39And the very latest news is
0:22:39 > 0:22:43that Tuppence has stopped treatment for now and is feeling much better!
0:22:51 > 0:22:55Over at the zoo, Sam and Saira have managed to take an important
0:22:55 > 0:22:58blood sample from Bob the West African dwarf crocodile.
0:22:58 > 0:23:02Out of all the animals, I think the crocodile was one that
0:23:02 > 0:23:04I was least wanting to work with.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07The sample will decide if Bob
0:23:07 > 0:23:10and partner Bindi can be part of a breeding programme that will
0:23:10 > 0:23:13help keep their species safe from extinction.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15OK, you can get out.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17- OK.- Well done, matey.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19- Thank you.- Well done.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23Now the team need a blood sample from Bindi.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25Don't do that.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28The veterinary team have dropped back to a safe distance
0:23:28 > 0:23:31whilst the handling team get Bindi under control.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34The vet said that she was too aggressive
0:23:34 > 0:23:36so we had to come out of the enclosure.
0:23:38 > 0:23:39Thankfully.
0:23:41 > 0:23:44The thinking time has made Sam nervous about going
0:23:44 > 0:23:45back into the croc enclosure.
0:23:47 > 0:23:49Are you enjoying it, Sam?
0:23:49 > 0:23:53Not really, it's just really scary. It's a good experience.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57It's just really scary.
0:23:57 > 0:24:00Bindi is more agitated and aggressive than her partner Bob.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03Oh, you're grumpy, aren't you?
0:24:07 > 0:24:09While Saira returns to take Bindi's blood,
0:24:09 > 0:24:14Sam stays back to help prepare the collection tubes for the samples.
0:24:14 > 0:24:18So, good old wipe with that to try and clear off all that stuff.
0:24:18 > 0:24:19It feels funny.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21The skin is really tough and scaly
0:24:21 > 0:24:25and the whole thing's just really cool, cos I don't think
0:24:25 > 0:24:28I will ever get a chance like this near to a crocodile again.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31It's impossible to see Bindi's veins.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34They're hidden deep under her tough, armoured skin.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37What about if we try another line?
0:24:37 > 0:24:41Saira helps Kevin locate a good place to insert the syringe.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43The vessel runs all the way up the tail
0:24:43 > 0:24:46so we have plenty of opportunities so I'm working my way.
0:24:46 > 0:24:50It's very tricky, lucky she's being calm.
0:24:50 > 0:24:55No matter what animal it is, I think vets have to always stay calm.
0:24:57 > 0:24:59If you're nervous, then the animal's nervous
0:24:59 > 0:25:01and you won't be able to handle it properly.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05If you can hang on to that for me because I might need to add to it.
0:25:05 > 0:25:06Success!
0:25:06 > 0:25:09Sam packs away both blood samples from a comfortable distance
0:25:09 > 0:25:12while Bindi rejoins Bob in the plunge pool.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14Yay.
0:25:16 > 0:25:20This has been a really hard day's work for my junior vets.
0:25:20 > 0:25:24We got the blood samples we wanted, nobody lost any limbs.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26We're all out safely so good results,
0:25:26 > 0:25:27we did what we needed to do.
0:25:27 > 0:25:28It went very well.
0:25:28 > 0:25:33The female was just looking at us as if to say, "I don't like you."
0:25:33 > 0:25:36This whole experience has just been amazing
0:25:36 > 0:25:39and I think that I really want to work with animals.
0:25:39 > 0:25:42Maybe I will pass on being the exotic vet.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44I will stick with domestic animals.
0:25:53 > 0:25:58My junior vets have experienced some extreme situations today.
0:25:58 > 0:25:59I've been proud of all of them
0:25:59 > 0:26:03but I can only give a Vital Vet Work award to the very best.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07Amblessed and Will showed their compassionate side as Tuppence
0:26:07 > 0:26:11had radiation therapy in an attempt to cure his cancer.
0:26:11 > 0:26:15Saira took the lead when she and Sam bravely entered the crocodile's lair
0:26:15 > 0:26:19to take blood from the terrible twosome Bob and Bindi.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21Wow.
0:26:21 > 0:26:23And Morgan and Lauren got stuck right in
0:26:23 > 0:26:27to successfully complete Trixie's dental treatment with power tools.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33It's been a very tough call but I've now made my decision.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38Junior vets, I have identified two individuals,
0:26:38 > 0:26:43both in the same team that were star performers today.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47And those two are...
0:26:49 > 0:26:52- Lauren and Morgan.- Yes!
0:26:52 > 0:26:55Great individual efforts but also excellent teamwork
0:26:55 > 0:26:59from Lauren and Morgan, who both handled Trixie brilliantly.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02They worked really well as a team. Top marks for determination
0:27:02 > 0:27:07to get the job done means they each bag a Vital Vet Work award.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09We really got stuck in to the task today
0:27:09 > 0:27:11and we got our hands up the mouth and everything
0:27:11 > 0:27:13and we enjoyed ourselves.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16I haven't won many episodes, but to win one today was like, yeah!
0:27:16 > 0:27:19Think you can cut it as a top vet and make animals better?
0:27:19 > 0:27:23Head over to the CBBC website now and use today's game code -
