0:00:01 > 0:00:06This is it! The final day at vet school for my junior vets.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10Which means it's their final chance to impress,
0:00:10 > 0:00:12as the junior vets carry out final check-ups
0:00:12 > 0:00:15on their favourite patients.
0:00:15 > 0:00:20And tensions rise as one of this lot is crowned head vet.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24I'm Alex Riley and for the final time,
0:00:24 > 0:00:27just in case you didn't get that, it's Junior Vets.
0:00:29 > 0:00:36Pets, wildlife, farm animals, all in need of expert help.
0:00:36 > 0:00:40Only a few weeks ago, at Edinburgh's amazing vet school,
0:00:40 > 0:00:43six raw recruits arrived
0:00:43 > 0:00:46to work alongside the school's top notch vets.
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Aw! As if I just did that!
0:00:51 > 0:00:53They've been pushed to their very limits...
0:00:58 > 0:01:02..helping to save the lives of sick and injured animals.
0:01:04 > 0:01:12Six junior vets and now, I'm about to choose one winner.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16This year's head vet is...
0:01:33 > 0:01:36This is it! Judgment day at vet school.
0:01:40 > 0:01:45Can you believe it? Your time here at vet school is almost at an end.
0:01:45 > 0:01:46Not long now.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49Are you starting to see yourselves as possibly being
0:01:49 > 0:01:52- vets in the future?- Yeah. - Definitely.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55I'm really, really proud of what you've achieved here.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58You've shown a fantastic appetite for vet work.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00You've shown flashes of individual brilliance.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03And when you've needed to, you've all come together
0:02:03 > 0:02:04and worked as a team.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06And every step of the way,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09you've always put the needs of the animals first.
0:02:09 > 0:02:10So, very well done!
0:02:10 > 0:02:13Now, the next time we get together here,
0:02:13 > 0:02:16it's going to be your graduation ceremony, your final day
0:02:16 > 0:02:19here at vet school and I'll see you all later. Off you go.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25Yep! One of them will be named Head Vet by me later.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29But before I make my final decision, they've all got one last
0:02:29 > 0:02:30mission to complete.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34They need to check on the progress of poorly patients who they've
0:02:34 > 0:02:35helped at vet school.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42Hello, Guinness, hello!
0:02:42 > 0:02:44We're ready for you now,
0:02:44 > 0:02:47so, if you'd like to come through to the consulting room.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51At the small animal hospital, junior vet, Jamie is facing his last
0:02:51 > 0:02:52ever vet school mission.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57- Been eating and drinking OK? - Er, yes, yeah.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00Guinness and his owner, Alastair, have been called back to vet
0:03:00 > 0:03:04school for test results that could change their lives for ever.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06I'll just have a check of his heart.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11It's quite fast at the moment but I think that might be
0:03:11 > 0:03:12because he's nervous.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15Guinness was really special to me because it was my first
0:03:15 > 0:03:19time in the theatre and he was definitely my favourite.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22When Jamie last worked with the poorly pooch, he was part of
0:03:22 > 0:03:25the surgery team that had to remove a huge lump and his spleen.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27It's all right, really.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29I thought I would be sick, but I'm not.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32It was a massive job and I was worried Jamie wouldn't cope
0:03:32 > 0:03:36with the gory surgery but he was an absolute natural...
0:03:36 > 0:03:41- It is quite heavy. - ..and stayed focused throughout.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Before I came to vet school, I didn't believe that I could
0:03:43 > 0:03:47handle, like, masses of blood, but I surprised myself in that operation.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50There's the dog we know and love!
0:03:50 > 0:03:53The surgery seemed to be successful but the lump had to be sent
0:03:53 > 0:03:55off to the lab for tests.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57When we left, me and Bonte didn't know
0:03:57 > 0:04:00whether he was going to be OK or not or whether he had cancer.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05Now the results are back and it's Jamie's job to deliver the
0:04:05 > 0:04:07news to nervous owner, Alastair.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09Erm, we've got the results back.
0:04:11 > 0:04:15It's really good news. It's a benign tumour which means it won't spread
0:04:15 > 0:04:18or anything and he's going to be fine.
0:04:18 > 0:04:19That's really good news, thank you.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23- So, hopefully, he doesn't need any more operations or anything.- No.- No.
0:04:27 > 0:04:32I was quite nervous about giving the results of the test
0:04:32 > 0:04:35but I was also excited cos it was really good news
0:04:35 > 0:04:37and that's obviously what Alastair wanted to hear.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41It's amazing, cos it sort of feels like I've rescued a dog's life.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45I always knew I had a gut feeling it would be fine.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47So, he's a fighter! Good boy!
0:04:54 > 0:04:57Nyatepe's at the large animal hospital to make a final
0:04:57 > 0:05:00- check on his old mate, Jack.- Hi.
0:05:00 > 0:05:05Aw, it's so nice seeing him and I'm quite happy that he remembered me.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08I made a real connection with Jack and he's like by far my favourite
0:05:08 > 0:05:11animal that I've had to treat.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16When Nyatepe first worked with Jack, he had to help put a camera
0:05:16 > 0:05:19up his nose and into his tummy to check for stomach ulcers.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25Nyatepe's gentle touch really helped settle jittery Jack.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28It's OK. Good boy!
0:05:28 > 0:05:32Today, Nyatepe needs to give Jack medication that will hopefully
0:05:32 > 0:05:35help get rid of his stomach ulcers for good.
0:05:35 > 0:05:36When you look in his face, you can
0:05:36 > 0:05:39kind of tell that he has quite a soft character.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41He just seems to be really happy around Nyatepe,
0:05:41 > 0:05:44which I think is just lovely.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48It's been really nice coming back to see Jack and he's got a lot better.
0:05:48 > 0:05:53When I help him, it makes me feel like... like I'm giving him...
0:05:53 > 0:05:55giving him more life.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59And owner, Caroline, has some top news for Nyatepe.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02Jack is feeling so much better that he's now back
0:06:02 > 0:06:04competing at horse trials.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07I've been riding him a bit, so we're building up working
0:06:07 > 0:06:08towards out next event.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10It's really great news that he's going eventing
0:06:10 > 0:06:14- and I wish you good luck! - Thank you very much.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17Aw! He's eating my hand.
0:06:21 > 0:06:23He's so funny!
0:06:28 > 0:06:31It hasn't all been work, work, work, here at vet school, oh, no.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34My junior vets have also had to complete an intensive
0:06:34 > 0:06:36training course,
0:06:36 > 0:06:39a course that was cunningly designed to help them develop skills
0:06:39 > 0:06:42all top vets need to succeed.
0:06:42 > 0:06:47And they passed every test in style... mostly!
0:06:48 > 0:06:52So stand by for some exclusive, up until now, unseen footage of
0:06:52 > 0:06:53my junior vets in training.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58- Start your incision.- Grab the other end.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01If the dog goes the same colour as the bandage,
0:07:01 > 0:07:02you know that it's on too tight!
0:07:07 > 0:07:10Every vet has to learn how to handle all kinds of weird creatures.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15So my junior vets have had to complete a crash course in
0:07:15 > 0:07:17critters with vet school's Kevin.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Now these training sessions help decide who deserves to be
0:07:22 > 0:07:25named Head Vet. So, I was there to keep a beady eye on them all,
0:07:25 > 0:07:27from a safe distance.
0:07:28 > 0:07:33- First, a tree frog! - These might try and run away.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36- Ah!- Yeah! You're right, it's off!
0:07:37 > 0:07:40No, I can't do it again. He keeps getting out!
0:07:41 > 0:07:44- So cute. - No probs with the frog!
0:07:47 > 0:07:49But how does a Royal Python grab you?
0:07:51 > 0:07:53Oh, I see! Like that!
0:07:54 > 0:07:56He's really beautiful!
0:07:56 > 0:07:59Vets need to have a confident, firm grip when handling any animal.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03- Aw!- Ah! I've done it!
0:08:05 > 0:08:07You OK? You OK?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10- Mm!- Are you sure?- Should be.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12He thinks you're a branch, so he just wants to go up your arm...
0:08:12 > 0:08:15I'm not a branch. I'm a human.
0:08:15 > 0:08:16Be brave, Josh.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20- Well done!- Well done, you two, that's fantastic!
0:08:20 > 0:08:22Now the really creepy one.
0:08:22 > 0:08:27The Chilean Rose Tarantula isn't deadly but you won't see me go
0:08:27 > 0:08:28anywhere near it.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30Yes! It's a spider!
0:08:33 > 0:08:36Wait, they can't bite, they can't, like, poison us or anything?
0:08:36 > 0:08:39No, Robyn, but if they feel threatened, these tarantulas
0:08:39 > 0:08:44can fire hairs at you that are itchy and painful so, don't scare it.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46I can't believe I'm holding a spider!
0:08:46 > 0:08:49Argh! Oh, Nyatepe, how can you do that?
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Jamie's not so sure. Neither am I!
0:08:53 > 0:08:56I really don't want to do it. What's it like?
0:08:56 > 0:08:59It's quite light, it's not that ticklish.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04Oh, wow!
0:09:07 > 0:09:10- Let go of it now. - Argh!
0:09:10 > 0:09:13Come on, you can do it.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16- Argh!- Don't worry.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Argh! As if I'm holding a tarantula.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22That was a useful training zone session that will definitely
0:09:22 > 0:09:27help me make a final decision on who's named Head Vet.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33And that decision is coming up very soon after my junior vets
0:09:33 > 0:09:36make their vet school promise.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40ALL: I do solemnly swear to protect wild animals and pets.
0:09:43 > 0:09:49My junior vets are paying a final visit to their favourite patients.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52Robyn's returned to Gorgie City Farm to check on Poppy, the goat,
0:09:52 > 0:09:56and her two kids, Billybob and Alexis with farm vet, Andy.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59- If we can just walk up and round her, Robyn.- OK.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04Maybe she'll come to you. Come on, goat!
0:10:06 > 0:10:09Out of all the animals I worked with, I made, like,
0:10:09 > 0:10:13the biggest bonds with them and then I just... They were too cute!
0:10:16 > 0:10:21Last time Robyn was taught how to trim and treat goat hooves.
0:10:21 > 0:10:24Well, we have got a bit of work to do here, haven't we?
0:10:24 > 0:10:27She showed she was eager to learn and proved what a fantastic
0:10:27 > 0:10:29team player she is.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32- Are you OK?- Yeah!
0:10:32 > 0:10:35Today, Robyn needs to examine Poppy's hooves to make sure
0:10:35 > 0:10:38the treatment worked and there's no sign of infection.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42She really has her hands full today because Andy is handing over
0:10:42 > 0:10:44full vet responsibilities.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47That one's grown quite a lot.
0:10:47 > 0:10:48Oh, it has, hasn't it?
0:10:50 > 0:10:53This time when I went back, I felt more confident
0:10:53 > 0:10:55and Andy sort of let me get more hands on with it myself.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59I trust you, Robyn.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Robyn's in complete control now,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04impressing Andy and trimming hooves like a pro.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Andy, I think we should spray this one.
0:11:10 > 0:11:12Go for it, Robyn.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17It's made me feel like I've done really well as a junior vet,
0:11:17 > 0:11:21that the actual vets are trusting me to do jobs on my own.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24It really makes me feel like I can do it.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27I can get them and stuff. He's all right to go now.
0:11:27 > 0:11:29Thank you, Robyn. I'll let him go.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35I feel so privileged that I've been given a chance to do all this.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37Can I have the bucket, please?
0:11:37 > 0:11:41I definitely want to be a vet now. Thinking that I'm going to be
0:11:41 > 0:11:43able to be helping them every day and getting to see different
0:11:43 > 0:11:47animals all the time. That'd be quite special!
0:11:49 > 0:11:52- Have you ever worked with a lion? - No, I haven't, Robyn.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54- Oh, I have. - Well, you're one ahead of me then.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02Bonte's on an all-important house call to a very special
0:12:02 > 0:12:04vet school patient.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06I think she's out here. Here she is.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08Hi, Marley.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11She's come to check how little Marley and owner, Hannah, are
0:12:11 > 0:12:15coping after receiving difficult news about the puppy's health.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18- Is it OK to get her out? - Of course, yes.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20Aw, hello!
0:12:20 > 0:12:22I was quite nervous going back to see Marley
0:12:22 > 0:12:24because she was quite poorly at the end...
0:12:24 > 0:12:26at the end of the time we last saw her,
0:12:26 > 0:12:29and I didn't know what the medication was going to do.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33Nervy Marley had come to vet school with a very poorly liver.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Marley was quite scared when we were treating her.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39She was really scared of the needle.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41Good girl!
0:12:41 > 0:12:43I tried my best to make her feel, like, at home
0:12:43 > 0:12:45and, like, comfortable.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47It's OK!
0:12:48 > 0:12:52A scan showed surgery wouldn't be able to help poor Marley.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Unfortunately for Marley,
0:12:55 > 0:12:59she is going to need to have medication throughout her life.
0:12:59 > 0:13:01Working with Marley kind of showed me
0:13:01 > 0:13:05that being a vet would be quite tough with the sad cases
0:13:05 > 0:13:08and not all of them would end with a happy result.
0:13:09 > 0:13:12Marley's home now and doing well on her medicine.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15- So, she's been taking all her meds OK?- Yeah.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18What we do is, we mix it in with her food and she's wolfing that down.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20- She loves it. - Aw, that's good!
0:13:20 > 0:13:23She was quite tired and stuff in the end.
0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Yeah, she's like a wee puppy again. - Yeah.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32I'm really proud. I feel like we've played quite a big part in it.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36I've learnt so much and it's definitely inspired me
0:13:36 > 0:13:40to want to be a vet and I'm going to try to be one
0:13:40 > 0:13:43and even if I don't, I would have this amazing experience.
0:13:50 > 0:13:54Training at vet school wasn't just about hands on care and surgery.
0:13:54 > 0:13:56Oh, no!
0:13:58 > 0:14:02My junior vets also had to learn how to get inside the minds of
0:14:02 > 0:14:04their patients and their owners.
0:14:08 > 0:14:11Here's another behind the scenes exclusive when vet, Adam,
0:14:11 > 0:14:15from Inglis Vets helps train them to be vet detectives.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17The best part is to start at the head end.
0:14:20 > 0:14:22Then, it was over to them.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Three separate sessions, two junior vets per team.
0:14:25 > 0:14:26Come on, we can do it!
0:14:26 > 0:14:30A room rigged with cameras and one giddy patient to examine.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34It's a bit of a live wire, this dog, isn't it?
0:14:34 > 0:14:35So then, who's this? This is Jill.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38First introductions!
0:14:38 > 0:14:41- I'm Josh. I'm Molly. - And I'm Josh.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Not a good start, Molly.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46We're looking for confident communication, good handling skills
0:14:46 > 0:14:49and a keen eye to spot any illnesses or injuries.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53He's very good at picking animals up.
0:14:53 > 0:14:54He's straight in there.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56- He is straight in there. - Very good with his hands.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59- Is she eating and drinking normally? - Yes, she is.
0:14:59 > 0:15:02- She is quite skinny.- Has she always been quite skinny
0:15:02 > 0:15:06- or is that lately?- She has always been skinny.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08She'll be fine but if she stops eating or drinking,
0:15:08 > 0:15:10then she'll probably need to be checked out.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14Brilliant! Top marks for Robyn for asking all the right questions.
0:15:14 > 0:15:15Ooh!
0:15:19 > 0:15:22- Every time he does something, he reassures her first.- Yes.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25It's probably a lesson some of us vets could learn from, really.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29He's doing... he's doing great!
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Yeah. They all seem healthy.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33Her teeth look quite good.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36I love the way he's got his hands on Jill the whole time,
0:15:36 > 0:15:38reassuring her, making her feel at ease.
