0:00:02 > 0:00:04Coming up on this massive show...
0:00:04 > 0:00:07A wild boar kicks up a big fuss before surgery.
0:00:09 > 0:00:13Little Marley needs a scan in this huge machine.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16And heavy-duty cow-sized surgery down on the farm.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22I'm Alex Riley, and this is Junior Vets.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26Pets.
0:00:26 > 0:00:27Wildlife.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29Farm animals.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31All in need of expert help.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35And at Edinburgh's amazing vet school,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37six raw recruits have arrived.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42They're working alongside the school's top-notch team.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Gasp! As if I just did that.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50And they're being pushed to their very limit...
0:00:53 > 0:00:57..as they help to save the lives of sick and injured animals.
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Six new junior vets,
0:01:03 > 0:01:05but I can only choose one...
0:01:06 > 0:01:08..winner.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12This year's Head Vet is...
0:01:28 > 0:01:31- Has anyone seen Alex today? - Maybe we should call him.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Morning. Ha-ha-ha.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37- Hi there, are you all right? - Yes, thanks.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41Now, has anybody got any idea what you might be doing today?
0:01:41 > 0:01:43Working with large animals?
0:01:43 > 0:01:45Funny you should say that, Robyn.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49Yes, you and Molly have got a very special assignment right here.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Nyatepe, Bonte, Josh and Jamie, you are going over that way.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59They're doing all right, this lot, but it's early days.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05Jamie can be jumpy around big animals,
0:02:05 > 0:02:07but he hasn't let it show...
0:02:07 > 0:02:08- Ooh!- ..too much.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12He's, like, going up to my neck. I don't know what to do.
0:02:12 > 0:02:13Today, he's going to have to prove
0:02:13 > 0:02:15he can overcome another of his fears...
0:02:15 > 0:02:18the messier, bloodier side of vet work.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Robyn's doing fine, working with little kittens and showing off
0:02:23 > 0:02:26her impressive animal care skills.
0:02:27 > 0:02:291.02kg.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33But how will she handle enormous, massive, HUGE vet jobs?
0:02:35 > 0:02:36Well, let's see, shall we?
0:02:39 > 0:02:43Robyn and Molly know they are working with a large animal today.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45But that's just about all they know.
0:02:45 > 0:02:46Hope it's friendly.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Oh, your patient's friendly all right...
0:02:51 > 0:02:53..but she's definitely not happy.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56This poor cow has a suspected sinus infection
0:02:56 > 0:02:58and is dripping snotty pus.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00It's got, like, a runny nose.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03She has got a runny nose, and that's been going on for over a month.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06OK, over to you two and farm vet, Andy,
0:03:06 > 0:03:09to put her in a better m-o-o-d.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12- You done?- Right, what's the plan?
0:03:12 > 0:03:17We're going to drill a hole into the cow's head here,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19and then we're going to put a tube in there
0:03:19 > 0:03:22to flush out all the muck down out of her nose.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25Now, drilling into her head might sound barmy,
0:03:25 > 0:03:28but the cow, who has a ten-week-old calf,
0:03:28 > 0:03:31is probably feeling pretty rubbish, and this heavy-duty job
0:03:31 > 0:03:34will hopefully make her feel a whole lot better.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36Will it hurt her... drilling into its head?
0:03:36 > 0:03:39Well, she's probably got a headache all the time now,
0:03:39 > 0:03:40but because we'll freeze the area
0:03:40 > 0:03:43she's not going to feel it, and we're going to give her a sedation
0:03:43 > 0:03:46so that she's not upset with us messing about with her.
0:03:46 > 0:03:47We thought he was messing,
0:03:47 > 0:03:50cos we didn't know that you could, like, drill through a skull.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54The poorly cow is moved into position for her treatment.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56Look at the calf.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59And her little calf stays close by to keep an eye on mum.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05The junior vets get a closer look, and smell, of their patient.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08I can definitely smell something, though.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10Ugh! I've just got it.
0:04:11 > 0:04:15It stunk and there was loads of it and it was all over the floor.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19She had all snot dripping right down her nose. It was disgusting.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21We're going to take an X-ray of her head
0:04:21 > 0:04:23and check if that sinus is still full of pus.
0:04:25 > 0:04:26The cow's head has been X-rayed,
0:04:26 > 0:04:29so Robyn and Molly now have an image to work with.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32You can see, like, where the fluid is.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34Nicely spotted, Molly.
0:04:34 > 0:04:39The cow's entire nasal passage is absolutely full of fluid.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Solving this will be a huge challenge.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45- How many times have you done stuff like this?- Me?
0:04:45 > 0:04:46Yeah.
0:04:46 > 0:04:47I've never done this before!
0:04:47 > 0:04:49What?!
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Now you tell us, Andy!
0:04:51 > 0:04:55Actually, this operation is so rare, a crowd's gathering to watch.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58All the professional vets were there, all, like, the students.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00I've never shaved a cow's head before.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03It made me quite proud to think that we were there helping along
0:05:03 > 0:05:07when there were some professional vets who'd never even done it before.
0:05:07 > 0:05:08And another one.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12More Junior Hairdressers than Junior Vets, this.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14There we go, Robyn. That looks perfect.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20But, later, how will Molly and Robyn cope
0:05:20 > 0:05:23when they have to treat the cow's splitting headache?
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Its skin just twisted round.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Marley is a poorly puppy.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39The experts at the small animal hospital are worried
0:05:39 > 0:05:41she may have a serious liver problem.
0:05:43 > 0:05:48And, today, owner Sean will find out if she needs an expensive operation.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52His little dog clearly means the world to this big man.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54I think they said the initial operation alone
0:05:54 > 0:05:56should be about £2,500.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59So, what we're going to do is I'm going to sell my van...
0:05:59 > 0:06:02Pay for it that way. And get her back on track, hopefully.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09Wow, Sean is planning to sell his van to pay for treatment.
0:06:09 > 0:06:12Marley is one lucky, loved pet.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15And it's junior vets Bonte and Nyatepe with surgeon Sam
0:06:15 > 0:06:17who will be trying to help Marley today.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19- So, Bonte and Nyatepe... - Aw, hi, aw.
0:06:20 > 0:06:21This is Marley.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25- She is so cute.- She is adorable.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30You can tell these two don't have pets at home, can't you?
0:06:30 > 0:06:31They're loving this.
0:06:33 > 0:06:34She was so cute.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37- I want a dog.- You want a dog?- Yeah.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40Yeah, but my dad won't let me have a dog.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42- My mum doesn't want one either. - Oh, no!
0:06:44 > 0:06:48Sam suspects the blood supply to Marley's liver is faulty.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52Normally, the liver acts a bit like a sieve or a filter.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54The blood goes through the liver
0:06:54 > 0:06:57and all the nasty bits of the blood are taken away.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01If Sam's right, Marley's blood isn't being cleaned by her liver
0:07:01 > 0:07:04and that's bound to be making her feel very poorly.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07I think she would, like, throw up quite a lot
0:07:07 > 0:07:10and she wouldn't be able to eat all her food properly.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16Ha-ha-ha.
0:07:16 > 0:07:20Aw, making friends. We're going to lose you.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23We're going to lose you. Come on, you. Get back.
0:07:23 > 0:07:24That's a good girl.
0:07:26 > 0:07:30The team need to confirm if Marley's liver has a faulty blood vessel
0:07:30 > 0:07:33so they can work out the best kind of treatment.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36They need to take a look inside her using a scanner.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38She'll have to be unconscious for this bit,
0:07:38 > 0:07:41which means giving her an anaesthetic injection.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44This could be risky, so the team have to check
0:07:44 > 0:07:45she's healthy enough first.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47- It's going quite fast. - It is going quite fast.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51She's quite...she's a little bit nervous so...
0:07:51 > 0:07:54- Bu-bum, bu-bum, bu-bum, bu-bum... - Yeah.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58She was getting a bit stressed, wasn't she, in the treatment room?
0:07:58 > 0:08:00Sounds like music.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Whoa!
0:08:03 > 0:08:05We had to take her for a walk cos she'd been stuck
0:08:05 > 0:08:07in the treatment room for a while
0:08:07 > 0:08:11and her heart rate was quite high and we had to calm her down a bit.
0:08:12 > 0:08:13Come on!
0:08:15 > 0:08:16Good girl.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Hope we can make her well.- Yeah.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20She'll be jumping all over the place again.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22And for her owner, as well.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27- Hopefully we get it right this afternoon.- Yeah.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30Good girl!
0:08:31 > 0:08:34And, later, Marley's liver scan results
0:08:34 > 0:08:36are delivered to my junior vets.
0:08:36 > 0:08:37So, what's going to happen now?
0:08:43 > 0:08:46- Josh and Jamie, hello.- Hi.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49Now then, welcome to the Wildlife Rescue Centre.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Now, what do you reckon you are going to be doing today?
0:08:52 > 0:08:54Helping wildlife?
0:08:54 > 0:08:56Yes, very good, very good, wildlife.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58Any particular idea on what type of wildlife...
0:08:58 > 0:09:01what animals you might be working on today?
0:09:01 > 0:09:02- Birds?- Birds.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05No denying it, this place has its fair share of birds.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07But you'll never see this chap fly, boys.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10- PIG GRUNTS - What's that noise?
0:09:10 > 0:09:11Oh, my gosh.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15Meet Terrence.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17- It's a pig.- It's not a pig.
0:09:17 > 0:09:18It's a jumping up pig.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22What, a jumping pig?! No, Terrence is a wild boar cross.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24Why is there a wild boar here?
0:09:24 > 0:09:27- Because it's a wildlife rescue centre!- Oh!
0:09:29 > 0:09:32Terrence came to live here after his mum died
0:09:32 > 0:09:34when he was just three days old.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36Andy's been looking after him for the last three months.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41But if these two can help him today
0:09:41 > 0:09:43he could be on his way to a new home.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45I wanted to help him
0:09:45 > 0:09:49but I was, like, worried if he would turn round and like...
0:09:49 > 0:09:51Savage us.
0:09:51 > 0:09:52Yeah. Or attack us.
0:09:53 > 0:09:57- And there'd be, like, a wild boar chasing us.- Yeah.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59Terrence is a bit of a live wire and he's not going to settle into
0:09:59 > 0:10:03a new home unless he's all mellow and friendly.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06Vet Willie from Ivy Bank Vets has a solution.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09But it involves surgery, and it ain't pretty.
0:10:09 > 0:10:13What Terrence is going to get done today is castration,
0:10:13 > 0:10:17which is an operation to remove his testicles.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21By removing them, Terrence should stay all cool and calm
0:10:21 > 0:10:24and will then bag a transfer to a new swanky sanctuary.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29Oh, imagine it, Terrence, living somewhere like this.
0:10:29 > 0:10:34All open-plan and lovely, mucking in with new wild boar buddies.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36Whoa!
0:10:37 > 0:10:38Come on, junior vets.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41Let's help Terrence get to his dream home.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43I knew there was going to be blood,
0:10:43 > 0:10:46but I didn't quite know what to expect.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49I just had to overcome the fear.
0:10:49 > 0:10:52First, the team need to sedate Terrence so that he's drowsy enough
0:10:52 > 0:10:54to be moved to the operating theatre.
0:10:54 > 0:10:57He'll make a noise. They always make a noise.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59- BOAR SQUEALS - There you go.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01So, what we need to do now is to leave him alone
0:11:01 > 0:11:04- so he's not going to be disturbed by you.- OK.
0:11:05 > 0:11:10Within 15 minutes, our boar looks to be out for the count.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Now, Terrence, he's almost asleep.
0:11:13 > 0:11:17He's very drowsy and he's in here, so come on, let's go in and get him.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26Hmm...he doesn't sound that drowsy.
0:11:26 > 0:11:31- He doesn't seem to be quite as sleepy as we thought he was.- No.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37He doesn't know what's going on because, like,
0:11:37 > 0:11:40he can't talk our language and we can't talk his,
0:11:40 > 0:11:42so we can't exactly tell him.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45- I think he's, like, quite... - Scared, I'd say.- Yeah.
0:11:47 > 0:11:48No, he's not ready yet.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50We'll just have to wait a bit longer.
0:11:50 > 0:11:55So why hasn't the...dose not worked as quick as we thought it would?
0:11:55 > 0:11:56Various reasons.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00He might be more excitable because there's other things going on,
0:12:00 > 0:12:03or he may be heavier than I'm estimating,
0:12:03 > 0:12:07or it may just be that we haven't left it for long enough yet.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12The team wait quietly for Terrence's sedative to work.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16Now, I'm no wild boar expert, but I think I've got a better idea.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18Couldn't we all sing him a lullaby or something like that
0:12:18 > 0:12:20to help him get off to sleep?
0:12:20 > 0:12:23"Rock-a-bye ba..." No...no.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25- I think that will just annoy him. - Yeah.
0:12:25 > 0:12:26Charming!
0:12:29 > 0:12:30Coming up...
0:12:30 > 0:12:32Josh and Jamie get their first taste of surgery.
0:12:32 > 0:12:33Scalpel.
0:12:33 > 0:12:37Not in an operating theatre, though - outside a garden shed.
0:12:37 > 0:12:38That's disgusting!
0:12:44 > 0:12:48At the small animal hospital, Bonte and Nyatepe's patient, Marley,
0:12:48 > 0:12:49is about to have a scan.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55She's got a nice, cute beard.
0:12:55 > 0:12:58It could confirm she needs surgery on her liver.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01And, because Marley can't be wriggling around during the scan,
0:13:01 > 0:13:05anaesthetist Juliette is here for one of those things we all hate...
0:13:05 > 0:13:07injections.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11Sometimes they try and nip a little bit if they're...
0:13:11 > 0:13:13you know, cos it hurts sometimes.
0:13:15 > 0:13:17This first injection is a sedative that will make Marley
0:13:17 > 0:13:19nice and relaxed.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21It's a bit stingy, though.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23MARLEY SQUEALS
0:13:24 > 0:13:27- It's OK, Marley.- I feel bad.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31When they put the syringe in Marley, oh, she screamed.
0:13:31 > 0:13:32It's OK.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37Now Juliette gives Marley an anaesthetic
0:13:37 > 0:13:39to keep her nice and still throughout the scan.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42You're such a good girl, Marley.
0:13:43 > 0:13:47Next, Marley's wired up to all sorts of gadgets and gizmos,
0:13:47 > 0:13:51so my junior vets can check she's not in danger whilst unconscious.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53When we look up there... there you go...
0:13:53 > 0:13:56- that's what you've done, Nyatepe. - Oh, yeah.
0:13:56 > 0:14:00This is quite tricky, but you can feel if you can feel a pulse.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03- Oh, I can feel it. - You can? Perfect!
0:14:03 > 0:14:06- Where you can feel the pulse, you're going to put this over there.- OK.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13Perfect.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16Do you know, that's better than some of my final year students?
0:14:18 > 0:14:21Little Marley is placed inside the huge CT scanner,
0:14:21 > 0:14:24which fires out high-powered X-rays.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29It might look scary but it won't hurt her at all.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33And this fancy computer uses info from the scanner
0:14:33 > 0:14:36to create images of Marley's insides.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Whoa.
0:14:39 > 0:14:43Don't take your eyes off Marley's heart monitor, Bonte.
0:14:45 > 0:14:46I had, like, a kind of graph thing
0:14:46 > 0:14:49and I had to write down her heart rate and her...
0:14:51 > 0:14:52Her oxygen.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54Oh, yeah, the oxygen levels.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59One hour later, it's finally done and my junior vets
0:14:59 > 0:15:03make sure Marley has a cosy place to recover from her anaesthetic.
0:15:05 > 0:15:07Oh, she's starting to move a bit.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10Oh, it looks like she's come back to life again.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12Oh, yes. Kisses.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17With Marley still in recovery,
0:15:17 > 0:15:20her all-important liver scan results have arrived.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23That's Marley's insides on that screen.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29Sam was expecting to see a problem with a blood vessel
0:15:29 > 0:15:32on Marley's liver, but sadly it's not that simple.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36What we were looking for was, if there was one extra vessel,
0:15:36 > 0:15:39we were hoping that we could close it off.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42The problem with Marley is that it's not just one.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44There's lots and lots of them.
0:15:44 > 0:15:45So, what's going to happen now?
0:15:45 > 0:15:49Unfortunately for Marley, we can't treat it surgically,
0:15:49 > 0:15:53so she is going to need to have medication throughout her life.
0:15:54 > 0:15:57Marley's liver problem can't be treated with surgery,
0:15:57 > 0:16:00but with the right medication she shouldn't get any worse.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- I'm sure she'll be fine. - Yeah, she's going to be good.
0:16:04 > 0:16:08She's never going to be, like, completely, fully better.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12It's not, like, perfect that she still has to take all the medication
0:16:12 > 0:16:15but at least it's going to...she's still going to act the same.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17It's been a long wait for owner Sean
0:16:17 > 0:16:19but his worries are nearly over.
0:16:23 > 0:16:24And here's Marley.
0:16:26 > 0:16:29That was a tough, emotional job for my junior vets.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31They got really involved.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33Everything we asked them to do was great.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37It's not every day that you get, like, to help give a dog anaesthetic.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40The pair of them were just great with the dog,
0:16:40 > 0:16:42which is one of the main things we look for.
0:16:42 > 0:16:47You were really good at the, like, comforting Marley and stuff
0:16:47 > 0:16:50cos he loved you...he was, like, up on your shoulder and everything.
0:16:53 > 0:16:54Good luck, you two.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58I'd just like to say a big "thank you" to the junior vets.
0:16:58 > 0:16:59Keep up the good work.
0:17:06 > 0:17:09Back at the sanctuary, Josh and Jamie are helping Terrence,
0:17:09 > 0:17:10the orphaned wild boar cross.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12Oh, my gosh!
0:17:12 > 0:17:16The little live wire needs surgery that will hopefully help calm him
0:17:16 > 0:17:18so he can settle into a new home.
0:17:19 > 0:17:23This is all about helping Terrence, but things aren't going to plan.
0:17:23 > 0:17:27The sedative which should have made him all drowsy hasn't worked.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30Terrence is awake, so they can't move him to the surgery.
0:17:30 > 0:17:34He's still not as sedated as I would like him to be.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37Local vet Willie decides to take drastic measures.
0:17:37 > 0:17:41They're going to operate on the boar right outside his enclosure.
0:17:41 > 0:17:44If Terrence won't come to the operating theatre,
0:17:44 > 0:17:47the operating theatre will have to come to Terrence.
0:17:50 > 0:17:52It was really crazy, wasn't it?
0:17:52 > 0:17:54Yeah, cos, like, we were meant to do it
0:17:54 > 0:17:56- in the operating theatre, weren't we? - Oh, yeah.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59It isn't, like, the usual place you'd operate on, like, a boar,
0:17:59 > 0:18:02cos normally you've got to do it, like, in sterile conditions.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04Yeah.
0:18:06 > 0:18:07What is that?
0:18:07 > 0:18:10This is the anaesthetic. This is what's going to knock him out.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13- So this will fully knock him out? Not like...- It will.
0:18:13 > 0:18:17We always start with a sedative then give an anaesthetic on top of that.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19Terrence is still very much awake.
0:18:23 > 0:18:24Now some cotton wool.
0:18:24 > 0:18:28- Cotton wool?- How much do you need?
0:18:28 > 0:18:30A handful. That's it.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32- Is that OK?- That'll do, thank you.
0:18:32 > 0:18:36But finally the anaesthetic works its magic.
0:18:36 > 0:18:37One, two, three.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40And the boys can get going with the op.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43This is what we're removing today. Two testicles.
0:18:43 > 0:18:44One there and one there.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46I thought that was his bottom.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51Removing these will help Terrence grow into a calm boar
0:18:51 > 0:18:55and that's definitely going to help him to settle into his new home.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57Josh is straight in with the clippers.
0:18:57 > 0:19:00Jamie then disinfects the surgery area.
0:19:00 > 0:19:01Give it a good clean.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04- So will he be feeling any of this? - No, he's asleep.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07- Is that OK?- Yeah.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Nice prep work, chaps.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11- Can you hear that?- Yeah.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14Now, this is going to be a bit messy and gory,
0:19:14 > 0:19:16which might be a problem for Jamie.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18Scalpel.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20- It's quite disgusting now.- Yeah.
0:19:23 > 0:19:26- Ah!- Whoa!
0:19:26 > 0:19:27Did it get you?
0:19:27 > 0:19:28No, just missed.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33Did you see it spurting blood?
0:19:33 > 0:19:36- It's disgusting.- Yeah.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40There's no time for Josh to feel squeamish here.
0:19:40 > 0:19:43Do you want to push my glasses up?
0:19:43 > 0:19:47They kept falling down and Willie kept asking me to, like,
0:19:47 > 0:19:49push them back up for him.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53- Thank you.- You'll have to start charging for that!
0:19:55 > 0:19:57All done, Terrence.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00Willie stitches up the wound and the junior vets get a chance
0:20:00 > 0:20:01to examine what came out.
0:20:02 > 0:20:06Like brains. Like the two sides of your brains.
0:20:06 > 0:20:08Or they look like bananas.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12I was proud of myself for doing the operation
0:20:12 > 0:20:14because I knew that it was going to be, like, gory,
0:20:14 > 0:20:16but I got on fine in the end.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19My junior vets' handiwork means Terrance can now be rehomed
0:20:19 > 0:20:22at a swanky new sanctuary where he can pal up with other wild boars.
0:20:22 > 0:20:25One, two, three... There we go.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29Both my junior vets have made it through their first major operation.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31How did they do, Willie?
0:20:31 > 0:20:33I think they both did remarkably well.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36They seemed to be very interested and some of their questions
0:20:36 > 0:20:39were more advanced than the questions I thought they might ask.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41So, if you were giving them marks out of ten,
0:20:41 > 0:20:45I would give them both a stern 8½ out of ten.
0:20:47 > 0:20:51I didn't think I'd like the operation cos I'm, like, quite faint-hearted,
0:20:51 > 0:20:53I think that's the right word,
0:20:53 > 0:20:55and I thought I'd, like, have to, like, go out.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58But, I didn't. I, like, stuck through it.
0:21:01 > 0:21:04I'd just love to see Terrence again cos he'll be happy running about
0:21:04 > 0:21:06and playing with his friends, really.
0:21:17 > 0:21:21'Junior vets Robyn and Molly are preparing for an amazing operation
0:21:21 > 0:21:23'that very few vets will ever experience.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28'This poor cow has a head full of snotty pus.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31'It's making her feel as rotten as she smells.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34'Loads of vet school staff and students have come to watch
0:21:34 > 0:21:37'the junior vets help release the infected fluid
0:21:37 > 0:21:39'by drilling a hole into her skull.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43'Now, listen, this is not one for the squeamish.'
0:21:43 > 0:21:46How exciting is it to be in this situation?
0:21:46 > 0:21:49- Very!- Very!
0:21:49 > 0:21:52'Robyn helps vet Andy use an endoscope,
0:21:52 > 0:21:55'which is a tiny camera thing on a bendy tube.
0:21:55 > 0:21:56'Up it goes!'
0:21:56 > 0:21:57Oh, that's awesome.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00'Now they can really see what all the pus is about.
0:22:00 > 0:22:02'The cow's nose is full of it!'
0:22:03 > 0:22:05How much detail in a cow's nose.
0:22:06 > 0:22:09Couldn't believe she'd been putting up with it for so long!
0:22:09 > 0:22:12She must have been in that much pain cos I know, like,
0:22:12 > 0:22:14if I have a headache I can be a bit groany or moody.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17What was it like, then, looking inside a cow's nose?
0:22:17 > 0:22:19It was like stringy from one side to the other.
0:22:19 > 0:22:21It was like pink and...
0:22:21 > 0:22:23- And snotty?- Yeah.
0:22:23 > 0:22:24Very, very snotty.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28I don't think I'll ever do that again unless we become vets.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30'Now the team know exactly what the problem is,
0:22:30 > 0:22:32'Molly prepares for the surgery.
0:22:32 > 0:22:35'Fear not, our cow won't feel a thing.
0:22:37 > 0:22:41'Professor Dixon is one of the very few vets to have done this before
0:22:41 > 0:22:44'at vet school, so he's the man in charge of the drill today.'
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Its skin's just twisted round.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50'One slip and he could paralyse the cow's face.'
0:22:51 > 0:22:53Look at it.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57This is a bit of a step up from kittens!
0:22:57 > 0:23:00'Then the drill reaches the blocked-up fluid.'
0:23:00 > 0:23:01Oh, wow!
0:23:01 > 0:23:05'And the pressure and the stinky snot is released.'
0:23:05 > 0:23:08Will that already be easing the pain a bit, you know?
0:23:08 > 0:23:09With all the fluid coming out.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11Yeah, cos all that pressure in there
0:23:11 > 0:23:13probably gives her a really bad headache.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15I could smell it, and there was all this blood...
0:23:15 > 0:23:17and it was going all over the floor.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20We were getting covered in snot and stuff. It was horrible!
0:23:20 > 0:23:21It was fun, though.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24'The team need to pump a saline solution into the cow's head
0:23:24 > 0:23:28'to flush out the infected snot from the cow's nasal passage.'
0:23:32 > 0:23:35Ugh...I can feel it splashing my hand.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37Come a bit closer, Robyn, yep...very good.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40It feels a bit surreal,
0:23:40 > 0:23:43catching all fluid coming out of a cow's nose in a bucket.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46- She's had a good clean-out there, hasn't she?- Yeah!
0:23:46 > 0:23:48My hands are getting a good clean after this!
0:23:48 > 0:23:51Don't touch Robyn's hands, don't touch Robyn's hands!
0:23:51 > 0:23:54'The flushing process needs to be repeated for the next week,
0:23:54 > 0:23:57'so the tube stays connected to the cow for now.
0:23:57 > 0:24:00'Go on, Molly. One more final flush for good measure.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05'Before the recovering mum is, at last, reunited with her calf.'
0:24:07 > 0:24:10How do you think that Molly and Robyn performed today?
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Oh, they're amazing, aren't they? I'm really impressed.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15I mean, helping us move the cow around...
0:24:15 > 0:24:17It's not easy to read X-rays, you know?
0:24:17 > 0:24:20They were getting a lot of good information off those x-rays,
0:24:20 > 0:24:22and then, when we were doing the surgery,
0:24:22 > 0:24:24I mean, some people haven't got the stomach for looking at
0:24:24 > 0:24:27that kind of work, but the girls, they were great.
0:24:27 > 0:24:28They were there all the time.
0:24:32 > 0:24:35Girls, what an incredible day you've had!
0:24:35 > 0:24:38How was it to be part of something so, kind of, dramatic?
0:24:38 > 0:24:40It's unreal thinking about it now
0:24:40 > 0:24:42because at the time you were sort of caught up in the moment with it.
0:24:42 > 0:24:46But now you have time to sort of think about what you've done.
0:24:46 > 0:24:47- It's pretty amazing!- Yes.
0:24:47 > 0:24:50It was brilliant cos, if you think about it,
0:24:50 > 0:24:51some of them vets do it most days.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54Andy had never done it before, so it was like a first time
0:24:54 > 0:24:56for all of us, but it was absolutely amazing to be there
0:24:56 > 0:24:59and I don't think I'll ever do something like that again.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04So, if you had to pick between Robyn and Molly,
0:25:04 > 0:25:07which one performed just that little bit better? What would you say?
0:25:07 > 0:25:11I can't give you that today, Alex, cos they both got ten out of ten.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13'Top marks? I like that!
0:25:13 > 0:25:17'Two junior vets with impressive new skills, and a cow who can
0:25:17 > 0:25:21'breath easier and smell just how bad her breath really is!
0:25:21 > 0:25:22'Ugh!'
0:25:28 > 0:25:30Ah, that's what I like to see.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33Cleaned-up, germ-free junior vets, back at vet school.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35They've had rave reviews today!
0:25:37 > 0:25:40So, now the important bit, I'm going to tell them
0:25:40 > 0:25:42who I think deserves to be named vet of the day,
0:25:42 > 0:25:44so they can enjoy a nice rest,
0:25:44 > 0:25:47and who needs to put in an extra shift here at vet school.
0:25:49 > 0:25:51I love the way that you've all got stuck in,
0:25:51 > 0:25:54and you've just got your hands dirty and you've not been fazed.
0:25:54 > 0:25:58You know, it's a bit full-on when things are having operations,
0:25:58 > 0:26:02and things are being injected, and shaved and cut in and everything.
0:26:02 > 0:26:04But you've all got your head down and you've worked hard
0:26:04 > 0:26:06and you've really gone for it.
0:26:06 > 0:26:09- Are you proud of yourselves? - ALL:- Yes, very, yes.
0:26:09 > 0:26:12Well, I'm pleased...I'm pleased, because I'm very proud of you.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14- ALL:- Aw, thanks, Alex.
0:26:14 > 0:26:19I am, but...I'm particularly proud of two junior vets today.
0:26:19 > 0:26:23Josh and Jamie didn't leave Terrence the wild boar cross' side,
0:26:23 > 0:26:26even when his outdoor surgery got a bit gory.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28- Ah!- Whoa!
0:26:28 > 0:26:31It was even more messy for Robyn and Molly.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33They were right in the mix when the poorly cow
0:26:33 > 0:26:35needed her infected sinus sorting.
0:26:35 > 0:26:36Ugh.
0:26:37 > 0:26:41And Bonte and Nyatepe showed an excellent bedside manner when
0:26:41 > 0:26:44they cared for Marley during her liver investigation.
0:26:47 > 0:26:50But who are today's standout junior vets?
0:26:51 > 0:26:56They were in an environment which was incredibly noisy, and smelly,
0:26:56 > 0:27:01and...snotty, quite frankly, so my vets of the day are...
0:27:01 > 0:27:03- Robyn and Molly.- Yay!
0:27:03 > 0:27:06- Congratulations! - Thank you.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08Woo!
0:27:10 > 0:27:12I feel really happy about it, but I feel like
0:27:12 > 0:27:14I'm with the experienced one because she's already won.
0:27:14 > 0:27:16Second time...I could get used to it!
0:27:16 > 0:27:20And the others better get used to topping up vet school supplies.
0:27:20 > 0:27:24I think they did deserve to win cos it sounded really disgusting.
0:27:24 > 0:27:26Unlucky, you lot.
0:27:26 > 0:27:28Fancy getting vetting yourself?
0:27:28 > 0:27:31Well, get over to the CBBC website right now
0:27:31 > 0:27:34and you'll find a special patient needing your expert help.
0:27:37 > 0:27:38Next time on Junior Vets...
0:27:38 > 0:27:41A baby donkey needs my junior vets protection.
0:27:41 > 0:27:45Isla the dog faces tests that could change her life.
0:27:45 > 0:27:47And what are those things? Oh, yes,
0:27:47 > 0:27:50alpacas, giving us the run-around on a Scottish farm!
