0:00:07 > 0:00:10Pet chicken, Houdini, needs a lump to disappear.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14And homeless Border collie, Joker, needs a life-changing op.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17I'm Alex Riley and this is Junior Vets.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20Pets...

0:00:20 > 0:00:21Wildlife...

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Farm animals...

0:00:23 > 0:00:25All in need of expert help.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31And at Edinburgh's amazing vet school, six raw recruits

0:00:31 > 0:00:32have arrived.

0:00:33 > 0:00:38They're working alongside the school's top notch team.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Ahhh! As if I just did that!

0:00:41 > 0:00:44And they are being pushed to their very limit.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52As they help to save the lives of sick and injured animals.

0:00:54 > 0:00:59Six new junior vets but I can only chose one...

0:01:01 > 0:01:02..winner.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06This year's Head Vet is...

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Are you all primed, prepped and ready for some serious animal?

0:01:29 > 0:01:30ALL: Yes!

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Yes! That's the spirit.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Are you prepared to go the extra mile to help sick

0:01:35 > 0:01:38and injured animals get better?

0:01:38 > 0:01:39ALL: Yeah!

0:01:39 > 0:01:40Ooh, argh!

0:01:41 > 0:01:44OK. Today's pairs are as follows.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Josh, you'll go with Robyn.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Molly, you're with Bonte.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49BOTH: Yeah!

0:01:49 > 0:01:51And you're all staying here at Vet School.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56However, Nyatepe and Jamie, you're going off-site.

0:01:56 > 0:01:57And Jamie, just one thing.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Are you sure you've overcome your fear of goats?

0:02:00 > 0:02:01Yes.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Good!

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Phew!

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Jamie's buddy, Nyatepe, is a handy partner to have when things

0:02:09 > 0:02:12get tough and heavy-duty.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15This lad doesn't seem to have any fears or phobias, which is

0:02:15 > 0:02:18vital if you want to become a top vet.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Ooh!

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Molly's another junior vet who never seems to get rattled or unsettled

0:02:24 > 0:02:27but she hasn't experienced surgery in the vet school

0:02:27 > 0:02:29animal hospital yet.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Will it make her flap?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Well, let's see, shall we?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Joker, the Border collie, is in need of a new home.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43He was found wandering the streets seven weeks ago and has been

0:02:43 > 0:02:45staying at the Edinburgh Dog And Cat Home ever since.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51But today, he has come to the Small Animal Hospital for what

0:02:51 > 0:02:54might be life-changing surgery.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Thankfully, there's an expertly trained, highly experienced

0:02:57 > 0:02:59team here to book him in.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Hello! Small Animal Hospital.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Junior vets Bonte and Molly.

0:03:06 > 0:03:07Good morning!

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Hello. Is this Joker?

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Yes, it is.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12If you'd just like to take a seat over there.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Thank you.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16It's a big day for homeless Joker.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18He requires an operation called a castration.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24The op will mean he can't have unwanted puppies and it'll

0:03:24 > 0:03:28make it miles easier for him to find a nice new home.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Come on, Joker!

0:03:30 > 0:03:32This is an important day for Molly, too.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37So, you're happy you can hear his heart beating nice and strongly.

0:03:37 > 0:03:38Yeah.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42It was my first dog patient and also my first time in theatre

0:03:42 > 0:03:43so I was really nervous.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Because Bonte's done it before, so she knew what to expect

0:03:46 > 0:03:49and what was going to happen and she was just like, "You'll be fine."

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- So, she was really good.- Yeah.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55First, Joker is prepared for an anaesthetic injection,

0:03:55 > 0:03:57so he'll be unconscious for his surgery.

0:03:57 > 0:03:58Aww!

0:03:58 > 0:04:02I know. It doesn't hurt them that much.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04It doesn't really hurt. It's a little nick.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07What's he feeling like right now? Is he, like, a bit drowsy, or...?

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Yeah, he's a little bit drowsy and he's probably still a little

0:04:10 > 0:04:12bit worried about what's going on because he's in a

0:04:12 > 0:04:13very strange place...

0:04:13 > 0:04:14Yeah.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16..with strange people.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Within seconds, Joker is out for the count.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Bonte leads the way as he's connected to a heart monitor.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24Marvellous!

0:04:24 > 0:04:25There we go!

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Well done, girls! That's his heartbeat.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33But there's an issue...

0:04:33 > 0:04:37the testicle that needs removing from Joker is not

0:04:37 > 0:04:38where it should be.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42I've never seen that.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Senior surgeon, Anna, arrives on the scene to try and sort things out.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51There's two options. One, they are either up in his tummy.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53The other option is that he's been castrated in the past

0:04:53 > 0:04:55and no-one's reported that.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57OK?

0:04:57 > 0:05:01What was a simple surgery job is now not so simple.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04If a missing organ stays inside Joker's belly, it could cause

0:05:04 > 0:05:09problems in the future, so they're going to operate straightaway.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- Are you happy to help me with that? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Where do you want them to clip?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Perfect.- There we go.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Joker's ready. So get yourselves scrubbed in for surgery, you two.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27- Are you looking forward to doing an operation?- I am, are you?

0:05:27 > 0:05:28Yeah.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33If the missing organ is found and removed, Joker will be one

0:05:33 > 0:05:35step nearer to finding a new home.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Hopefully, they'll find it as well.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40- Yeah.- Cos they couldn't find it before.

0:05:43 > 0:05:48And later, it's all about steady hands and tricky kit as the team

0:05:48 > 0:05:50zero in on Joker's problem.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52You're actually doing surgery now.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54I know. That just felt really cool!

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Jamie and Nyatepe are at the Highland Wildlife Park.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04All sorts of rare and endangered beasties live here.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08Today my junior vets are meeting vet Jane from Strathspey Vets,

0:06:08 > 0:06:12and head keeper Morag, for some extreme vet work on a mystery beast.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Right Jamie, Nyatepe, I'm needing a hand today.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I've got somebody who's needing a manicure,

0:06:17 > 0:06:19needing their toenails done.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23A foot manicure with a gun? What's going on, Jane?

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It's quite an excitable animal, so we might have a little

0:06:26 > 0:06:29bit of trouble catching it, so we put an anaesthetic drug in the dart.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32- Are one of those pink fluffy things going to go on the end?- Yeah.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35We have nice bright ones because if Morag misses, which she

0:06:35 > 0:06:38doesn't very often, we need to be able to find the dart as well,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40so we need to see where it is. OK?

0:06:40 > 0:06:43So, we just need to go find our animals now.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46- Oh! I spot some heads. - Oh, wow!

0:06:46 > 0:06:50- There. You see the heads? - Wow!

0:06:50 > 0:06:52There he's...right up there.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53Oh, yeah, ha-ha!

0:06:53 > 0:06:54He's really beautiful.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Meet your beasties, boys.

0:06:56 > 0:06:57Is that a deer?

0:06:57 > 0:06:59No, it's called a markhor.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04It's like a goat and they run up those rocks like Spider-Man.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Markhors are related to domestic goats, but the males are

0:07:10 > 0:07:12twice the size.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16In the wild, these curly, horned, Asian giants spend most of

0:07:16 > 0:07:22their day hopping from rock to rock, which wears their hooves down.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24But there's a lot less rock in the Highlands, so they need the

0:07:24 > 0:07:27team's help to get their hooves all tidy so they don't become

0:07:27 > 0:07:29infected and overgrown.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34Jamie might have just conquered his fear of little farmyard goats,

0:07:34 > 0:07:37but today they're treating the mighty Joachim.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Check out his metre-long horns!

0:07:40 > 0:07:45I'm quite anxious but obviously I've done goats the other day,

0:07:45 > 0:07:47so, I think I'll be better with them today.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52I don't want to get near them, no, cos, like, their horns are so huge

0:07:52 > 0:07:54and they seem quite strong.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56- You're in my shoes for a day. - Yeah.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Before the junior vets can enter the enclosure,

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Joachim needs to be anaesthetised with the dart gun.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04So, as soon as that dart goes in,

0:08:04 > 0:08:08I need somebody to write down the time. OK?

0:08:08 > 0:08:09Is there any danger to the goat itself?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Yeah. I mean, they get quite stressed so that's obviously a danger,

0:08:12 > 0:08:15if you're anaesthetising something that's a bit stressed

0:08:15 > 0:08:17but the important thing, once you've got them down,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19is keeping an eye on their heart

0:08:19 > 0:08:20and their breathing. OK, let's go.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23The junior vets must record the time Joachim is darted

0:08:23 > 0:08:26so they know how long he's been unconscious.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28The last thing the team want is

0:08:28 > 0:08:31a wide-awake, giant, grumpy goat on their case.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Sharp-shooter Morag moves into position.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37All right!

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Right, so stay nice and quiet when this bit's happening, OK?

0:08:39 > 0:08:41We'll just have to wait.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43(Which one's she looking for?)

0:08:43 > 0:08:46- One of the big males. That one there.- Yeah.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Joachim's in Morag's sights.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05Carefully does it.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Spot-on, Morag!

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- (What time was it? What time was it?)- (8:58.)

0:09:16 > 0:09:19I think it went in the muscle, so I think that was fine.

0:09:19 > 0:09:20Were you happy with the shot?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22I am happy with the shot but I would like you to look

0:09:22 > 0:09:26through your binoculars just to see that the dart's gone off.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Easier said than done, Morag.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31The junior vets can't see if the dart's delivered a full dose

0:09:31 > 0:09:34of anaesthetic, because Joachim's done a runner.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Well, I think I would have run off if I was darted in the bum!

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Later, Joachim is stretchered off

0:09:41 > 0:09:45as the junior vets prepare for heavy-duty vet work.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47- He's really big. - He is a big boy, isn't he?

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Chickens. Not your average pet,

0:09:54 > 0:09:57but these girls all mean the world to owner, Jane.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59They were all rescued from a battery farm

0:09:59 > 0:10:03but they have a wonderful life now, scratching around in her garden.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08They're very affectionate,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11and so it's just constant love.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15But one of her brood, Houdini, seems to be in a bit of discomfort

0:10:15 > 0:10:17and might need junior vet help.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22This sounds like a job for Robyn and Josh.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27Right. Are you coming out? Clever girl!

0:10:27 > 0:10:30They're teaming up with exotics vet Kevin.

0:10:30 > 0:10:31Don't peck me. I'm not food!

0:10:35 > 0:10:37When I found out I was working with exotics,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40I didn't expect it to be a chicken, but I was really excited.

0:10:40 > 0:10:45I thought it would be like a snake or a spider or something.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Hey, it looks like the team have put their finger on the problem.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51If you look on this side, can you see there's a little swelling?

0:10:51 > 0:10:52It feels quite solid.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55That lump might not look too big

0:10:55 > 0:10:59but remember, Houdini's got a small head.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01I bet that's causing a bit of bother.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04If you get an abscess forming or infection forming, it forms a solid.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07The only way we're going get rid of those thickening changes is

0:11:07 > 0:11:09to physically remove that tissue.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15Houdini definitely needs surgery, but before she goes in

0:11:15 > 0:11:18it seems something might need to come out.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Why do you think it's important to feel your chicken

0:11:20 > 0:11:23before you go for surgery?

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- She might lay an egg.- Yeah.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Kevin suspects Houdini wants to lay an egg

0:11:28 > 0:11:31and they can't start her surgery until she does.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37And how do you get the egg out?

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Erm...

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Good question, Josh. Kevin?

0:11:42 > 0:11:45It's a question of gentle pressure, a little bit of lubrication,

0:11:45 > 0:11:46and you just find the right bit,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49and it's slowly, slowly getting the egg out.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Your chicken's going to be fine

0:11:51 > 0:11:54and we'll give you a ring when she's ready to go home.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- She likes it if you whisper to her. - OK.

0:11:59 > 0:12:00Don't worry, Jane.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04These two will make Houdini's health problems disappear!

0:12:04 > 0:12:08But first they need nature to take its course and that egg to drop.

0:12:12 > 0:12:13CLUCKING

0:12:15 > 0:12:18And later, the junior vets need to keep their focus

0:12:18 > 0:12:21as Houdini the chicken goes under the knife.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24So this is the pus within this sinus.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Over in theatre two, Joker the Border collie is about to undergo

0:12:33 > 0:12:36his surgery with Bonte, Molly and surgeon, Ana.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Joker has a problem called a retained testicle

0:12:40 > 0:12:41and it needs removing.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44He doesn't have an owner, but this surgery will stop him

0:12:44 > 0:12:48having unwanted pups, which might help him find a new home.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Now what we need to do is to make a little hole in his tummy.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56But the bit they need to remove from Joker isn't where it should be,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59and the team need to find out where it is.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03I had to hold the camera, which was quite hard, it was quite heavy,

0:13:03 > 0:13:05and I had to, like, move it around.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Can you see my blade coming in?

0:13:08 > 0:13:11- You'll be able to see me there, right?- Yeah.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Bonte keeps a steady hand

0:13:15 > 0:13:19allowing Ana to locate the missing organ.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- Ooh!- Oh, that's huge!

0:13:22 > 0:13:24I got really nervous cos I saw Bonte was doing really well

0:13:24 > 0:13:27and everything and, of course, she'd been in theatre before

0:13:27 > 0:13:28so then it was my chance to do something.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32I was getting quite scared and I didn't really know what to expect.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34- OK Molly, do you want to do this? - Yes, please.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Hey! The pressure's on Molly here.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42It's her first time in surgery and she's only gone and got control

0:13:42 > 0:13:44of the surgical graspers, hasn't she?

0:13:44 > 0:13:45How does it feel, Molly,

0:13:45 > 0:13:48to be actually removing something from a dog?

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Erm, quite scary, actually!

0:13:52 > 0:13:54You're doing a good job.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59Molly needs to keep the organ in position so Ana can cut it free.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04- Oh, I'm sorry! - It happens all the time.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Oof! This is some serious first-time surgery Molly's got going on here

0:14:08 > 0:14:10and her buddy's supporting her all the way.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13I think you can get it this time, Molly.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16- It's hard cos... - I know. It looks really hard.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19It dropped at first and then you did it in the end, didn't you?

0:14:19 > 0:14:20You did really well!

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- There we go!- Yay!

0:14:22 > 0:14:25But I was really pleased when I got it cos it had taken,

0:14:25 > 0:14:26like, a few chances.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29- Like that?- Yeah, cut there.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32- You're actually doing surgery now. - I know, that just felt really cool!

0:14:32 > 0:14:35- Under there?- No. On top.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Aw! As if I just did that!

0:14:38 > 0:14:41I was really warm with all the lights on us and everything

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and I just started to feel really faint.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47- Are you OK? - Yeah, I just feel a bit sick.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Molly's done a cracking job

0:14:52 > 0:14:55and takes a well-earned breather out of surgery.

0:14:55 > 0:14:56Are you feeling OK, Bonte?

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Yeah, I'm absolutely fine.

0:14:58 > 0:14:59So Bonte finishes off with Ana

0:14:59 > 0:15:02before going straight out to check on her partner.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07- Are you all right, Molly? - Yes, thanks!

0:15:11 > 0:15:13- How are you feeling, Molly? - I'm OK, thank you.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17Sorry!

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I think you did the right thing by saying that you felt a bit rough.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22I didn't want to just faint on the dog!

0:15:22 > 0:15:24- No, exactly, and... - Or on you, Alex!

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Or on me, more importantly, on me, yes.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Don't faint on me, whatever you do.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Here comes surgeon Ana. What does she think of their efforts?

0:15:31 > 0:15:33You happy, both of you?

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Yeah, I've really enjoyed it, thank you.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38You've done really well, very good assistants. Good job!

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- High-five!- High-five! - Thank you.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Theatre is really hot and she just felt a bit fainty,

0:15:44 > 0:15:48which happens a lot, you know, for some of the staff members as well.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51I actually didn't have any other vet scrubbing in with me

0:15:51 > 0:15:53and I felt very confident with both of them that we,

0:15:53 > 0:15:57you know, the patient's safety was at the highest standard at all times.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59- You did really well! - Thank you. So did you.

0:16:01 > 0:16:02- Good teamwork.- Yeah.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05It feels really good that we've helped him

0:16:05 > 0:16:08and now he might be able to find a new home and family and stuff.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18- Hello!- Back at the wildlife park, Jamie and Nyatepe are on the trail

0:16:18 > 0:16:21of a super-sized markhor mountain goat called Joachim.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28Jamie's not a big goat fan and he's definitely not a fan of big goats.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30I'm a little bit nervous of the goat

0:16:30 > 0:16:34but, erm... I've just got to deal with it.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39Joachim needs vet work on his feet to prevent them becoming infected.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44He's just been hit with an anaesthetic dart.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48Now the vet team can enter the enclosure and approach with caution.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Just nice and quiet.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53He's quite sleepy, but sometimes they can be a wee bit twitchy.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Like, when you are far away you didn't quite like realise

0:17:00 > 0:17:01how big the horns were.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04You see, there's the dart there, so we have to take that out

0:17:04 > 0:17:06before we move him cos obviously there's a needle in it

0:17:06 > 0:17:09and we don't want any of us getting stabbed, do we?

0:17:09 > 0:17:10So, just pull it out like that.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12And the other thing we want to check is to make sure

0:17:12 > 0:17:15it's gone all the way down, cos that means he's had all the drug.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17So I'm quite happy he's had all the dose.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20Just to be sure Joachim's completely unconscious,

0:17:20 > 0:17:22the team check his reflexes.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25Yes. He is heavily sedated but he is just sedated.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27He's not blinking, which is a good sign.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29One, two, three...

0:17:29 > 0:17:34Right, let's get this sleeping giant to a safer working area.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36- Right. Is everybody quite happy and quite comfy?- Yeah.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Just take your time so nobody falls over.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- He's really big. - He is a big boy, isn't he?

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Do you just want to see if you can pop his foot back on there?

0:17:46 > 0:17:48- That's it. Good. - So where are we taking him?

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Just down here. Right, gently put him down. That's it.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54OK, right. Do you want to see if you can find his heart for us?

0:17:54 > 0:17:58The team don't know exactly how long Joachim's anaesthetic will last,

0:17:58 > 0:18:02so it's Jamie's job to alert them if he thinks it's wearing off.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04So how can you tell when he's going to wake up?

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Well, you listen to his heart, and see how the speed it's going?

0:18:07 > 0:18:09It's nice and steady, and we just keep like that

0:18:09 > 0:18:11and his breathing should just stay like that as well.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13And if there's any twitching round his head

0:18:13 > 0:18:16- or if he gets up and runs away! - OK.- It'll be too late by then!

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Keep looking and listening, Jamie,

0:18:20 > 0:18:24so Nyatepe can get to work on those huge feet.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26You see, they're very, very overgrown.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29So, what we need to do is trim his feet back.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32They need to work carefully and quickly.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37- Like that?- Yeah.- Oh, no!

0:18:37 > 0:18:39That's it. Squeeze.

0:18:39 > 0:18:40Excellent! Good!

0:18:40 > 0:18:41That's quite tough!

0:18:43 > 0:18:44It never really hurt him,

0:18:44 > 0:18:48so it was good, just like cutting your own nails.

0:18:48 > 0:18:49How we getting on there, guys?

0:18:49 > 0:18:53It's quite steady at the moment, so I think he's fine.

0:18:53 > 0:18:54- Quite happy?- Yeah.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01It's quite ace, actually, cos I thought I didn't think

0:19:01 > 0:19:05I'd actually get close to a goat again but, I am, so...

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Wow! there's no stopping Jamie now!

0:19:12 > 0:19:13Hand over those clippers!

0:19:13 > 0:19:15Right. Try cutting that.

0:19:16 > 0:19:17Squeeze!

0:19:19 > 0:19:22A good antibacterial scrub to stop any infections...

0:19:22 > 0:19:24That's it.

0:19:24 > 0:19:28And finally, the nerve-racking bit. Joachim needs to be revived

0:19:28 > 0:19:31with an injection to reverse the anaesthetic.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35I was worried that he was going to be a little bit dizzy

0:19:35 > 0:19:37and just run towards one of us.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42- Are you putting it into his jugular vein?- Yeah. That's right.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43Here we go!

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Phew! Joachim's up and off!

0:19:46 > 0:19:49He's away. There you go!

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Ha-ha! It's woke up!

0:19:52 > 0:19:55The best thing he can do now is go and find himself somewhere quiet

0:19:55 > 0:19:58with his pals, and go to sleep and just sleep it off.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00How did my junior vets get on, Jane?

0:20:00 > 0:20:02I think overall, they both coped really well.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06If I had to pick one over the other, probably, Jamie.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09He certainly concentrated a lot and he seemed to be quite happy

0:20:09 > 0:20:12and quite comfortable working with the markhor here.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18I thought it would just come and attack you but it just ran off

0:20:18 > 0:20:22when you lifted it up, cos it was scared that we shot it in the bum!

0:20:22 > 0:20:23Yeah!

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Great work, both of you!

0:20:28 > 0:20:30I've definitely beaten goat phobia.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- They were really big though, weren't they?- Yeah!

0:20:33 > 0:20:34And their horns were spirally.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37See? He's away up the rock there, already.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39And there he goes.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40That's what I like to see.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43A giant mountain goat with a spring in his step.

0:20:49 > 0:20:50Houdini the poorly chicken

0:20:50 > 0:20:53needs surgery to remove a lump from her face.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58But the operation can't get under way yet.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01Everything's on hold for junior vets Josh and Robyn

0:21:01 > 0:21:05because they've discovered Houdini needs to lay an egg first.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07CLUCKING

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Ah, lovely! We're back on track.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19We're about to go into surgery and she's laid her egg,

0:21:19 > 0:21:23which is good cos we won't have to help her lay it before surgery

0:21:23 > 0:21:25so now she won't have to go through all that stress

0:21:25 > 0:21:27before we go into the operation.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37The lump on her nose is causing Houdini real discomfort

0:21:37 > 0:21:40but hopefully our junior vets' work can help cure her today.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45It's going to be quite rare, doing an operation on a chicken.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50Josh has a key role in surgery.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54He's monitoring Houdini's vital signs with vet nurse tutor Caroline.

0:21:56 > 0:21:57Once she's unconscious,

0:21:57 > 0:21:59you will start monitoring her anaesthetic for us.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Josh uses a thingamajig called a Doppler.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09ECHOING WHITE NOISE

0:22:09 > 0:22:12That noise is actually the chicken's heart.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16It's really important. At any time, if we don't hear it,

0:22:16 > 0:22:20that means we need to sort something out quickly.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22While Robyn scrubs in for the operation

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Josh begins recording her vital signs.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Oxygen, we're up to four litres.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Josh must be very accurate.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34When surgery gets under way, Houdini's life may depend on it.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- 84.- I counted that at 140.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Do you want to have another go at counting it again?

0:22:44 > 0:22:47When I was doing the counting, I kept getting it wrong.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Well, you have to times it by four.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53I'm not really good at my times tables.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Finally, Josh has got his numbers right.

0:22:56 > 0:22:57Vet Kevin wants to get going.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00But his assistant Robyn is still scrubbing in.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05I was finished, like, five, ten minutes ago then

0:23:05 > 0:23:08I turned the tap off and tapped it and I had to start it all again.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13I'm feeling really stupid because it takes so long.

0:23:13 > 0:23:14The clock's ticking.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Kevin cannot delay the op

0:23:16 > 0:23:19because it's dangerous for a small bird like Houdini

0:23:19 > 0:23:21to be under anaesthetic for a long time.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25- Hurrah!- Phew!

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Junior vet, coming through!

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Anaesthetist Josh, are you happy for us to start operating?

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- Yeah!- All stable. Good. - Yeah? OK.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Another cotton bud, another cotton bud.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46Stay focused, Robyn.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49- Another cotton bud.- Sorry!

0:23:49 > 0:23:53I was struggling at first, but then as we got further

0:23:53 > 0:23:55and further into it, I kind of got used to it

0:23:55 > 0:23:58and then knew how important it was to stay focused.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00These ones?

0:24:00 > 0:24:01Nope, the others.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04There should be scissors. That's it. Beautiful!

0:24:10 > 0:24:12So this is the pus within this sinus.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Brilliant, Houdini's lump is out.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17Ooh! Now that must have been uncomfortable.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21Robyn cleans Houdini's wound.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25It needs a steady hand...

0:24:25 > 0:24:26All right. Lovely!

0:24:26 > 0:24:29..and she's got one! Well done, Robyn.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33It's a tense moment for anaesthetist Josh

0:24:33 > 0:24:35as he waits for Houdini to recover.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42There you go, girl!

0:24:42 > 0:24:46And after 30 minutes on the ward, Houdini's up and about -

0:24:46 > 0:24:49minus that horrible lump.

0:24:49 > 0:24:50Oh, she's standing up!

0:24:50 > 0:24:54And a few hours later, she's ready to go home with happy owner, Jane.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57The type of surgery we did was a sinus surgery

0:24:57 > 0:24:58and it all went really well.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00Thanks for looking after my wee girl.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03Kevin, how did they do?

0:25:03 > 0:25:05You can be the best surgeon in the world

0:25:05 > 0:25:08but communicating with that client is actually the bottom line.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12It's that that's very important, and you've done that very well today.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15She trusted us to look after her chicken.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I can't believe I've just done a chicken operation!

0:25:18 > 0:25:22I never thought we'd be that hands-on with it. It was amazing!

0:25:28 > 0:25:30It's been a hard day for my junior vets

0:25:30 > 0:25:34but they're back happy, chatty, cleaned up and germ-free.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37The pressure's now on me. I have winners to pick.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- Hi, junior vets.- Hello.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43What I'm really impressed by is the fact

0:25:43 > 0:25:45that you're all maximising your opportunities.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48You're getting into a situation and you're not wasting it.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51You're focusing on it, and keeping that focus

0:25:51 > 0:25:54is an extremely important part of vet work, so well done!

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Nyatepe and Jamie hit the Highlands

0:25:56 > 0:25:59and fixed up Joachim, the giant goat.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02True to form, Nyatepe was handy with the vet tools

0:26:02 > 0:26:06and Jamie continued to bin his fears and phobias in style.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10It was no laughing matter when Joker the dog underwent important surgery.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Bonte and Molly were brill in what was probably

0:26:13 > 0:26:17the trickiest small animal op any junior vet has handled.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Robyn and Josh didn't chicken out of surgery work, either.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22Houdini was in real discomfort

0:26:22 > 0:26:25until these two helped get rid of her grisly lump

0:26:25 > 0:26:27and sent her home with a nice, neat beak.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36That was very impressive stuff. Well done.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40But my vets of the day are Molly and Bonte. Well done!

0:26:42 > 0:26:46Sensational vet work. These two were flying today.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49When we were helping Ana, like sewing

0:26:49 > 0:26:51and then like pulling with the camera and everything,

0:26:51 > 0:26:55it was, like, really disgusting, so I think we kind of deserved it.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57Yeah, I think we did. And we helped Joker.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00Yeah.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03Come on, you lot. These cabinets won't stock themselves.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04They did deserve to win

0:27:04 > 0:27:06though because it sounded like a really hard operation.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09It must have been quite long if Molly nearly fainted.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11Fancy getting vetting yourself?

0:27:11 > 0:27:14Well, get over to the CBBC website right now

0:27:14 > 0:27:17and you'll find a special patient needing your expert help.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Next time on Junior Vets,

0:27:23 > 0:27:27a thoroughbred horse is turned upside-down for surgery.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30Competition horses stay the right way up for vet checks

0:27:30 > 0:27:35and a sick lion is down and then up for a hi-tech examination.
