0:00:51 > 0:00:55Chartreuse, myrtle or jade?

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Hmm... I like the green one.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00They're all green.

0:01:00 > 0:01:06The jade is elegant but the chartreuse is more vibrant.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08I'll go with the myrtle.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11'He reckons he learns something new and interesting every single day.

0:01:11 > 0:01:16'He says he hasn't yet learned anything he's been able to put to use

0:01:16 > 0:01:19- 'but they haven't been married long so there's plenty of time.'- Right.

0:01:21 > 0:01:22Let's choose a hat.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26'I couldn't figure out why Grandma Mainland was making

0:01:26 > 0:01:29'such a fuss about what to wear.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31'We were only visiting Uncle Matthew,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34- 'so it's not like anyone was going to see us.'- What about this?

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Elegant with a touch of wit.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Can we go now?

0:01:40 > 0:01:42But you haven't chosen your outfit.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50- Ta-da!- Ha-ha! The perfect look in under three seconds.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53- What is your secret? - A good pair of wellies.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01- All set?- All set. Just a minute.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Thermal emergency blanket.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09- Emergency blanket?- Hillwalking can be dangerous, you know.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10Oh, absolutely.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15Except Matthew's hut isn't really a hill walk, more just a walk.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Come on.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29The night before there had been a terrible storm,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32so everything looked shiny and bright on our walk.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Grandma Mainland said she couldn't get to sleep during the storm

0:02:35 > 0:02:40but I loved listening to it. It made me feel warm and cosy in my bed.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43She said that was because I was an island girl.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45I've never understood why he lives out here,

0:02:45 > 0:02:49hiding away in the middle of nowhere.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51I suppose he just likes it.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Grandma Mainland said there's nothing she liked more than the rumble

0:02:54 > 0:02:59of double-decker buses to get her to sleep because she's a city girl.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03I'm lost.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08That's the loch, that's the shieling, so we must be round about here.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13You're an island girl, right enough.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Look, there's Uncle Matthew! Race you!

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Caught anything? HE SNEEZES

0:03:25 > 0:03:29A cold, maybe. Hey, mother.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Oh, my dear.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35What are you doing camping out?

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Oh, I've got last night's storm to thank for that.

0:03:38 > 0:03:39Why? What happened?

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Let me pack this stuff away and I'll show you.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53- I didn't know you could fish. - Your grandpa was an angler.

0:03:53 > 0:04:00- It was either learn to fish or never see him at all.- Whoa!

0:04:00 > 0:04:01Not bad for a city girl, eh?

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Oh, Matthew.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14And that's why I'm living in a tent.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20Half the roof blew off and brought all the timbers in.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27- All your lovely paintings.- Not so lovely now that...- What's wrong?

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- What happened?- A lump of plaster knocked it right out.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35The good news is I found it.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Reckon I'll get something from the tooth fairy?

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Tooth fairy my foot, it's a dentist you need.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Absolutely, the next time I'm on the mainland.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49- When are you ever on the mainland? - I'll get round to it, eventually.

0:04:49 > 0:04:55- What are you going to do about the hut?- Fix it up, I suppose.- Fix it?

0:04:55 > 0:04:57This place is not fit for firewood.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Och, away, there's years left in the old...

0:04:59 > 0:05:01WOOD TUMBLES DOWN

0:05:01 > 0:05:03- Oh. - GRANNY MAINLAND SIGHS

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- Please...- I'm going to phone my dentist in Glasgow as soon

0:05:07 > 0:05:10as we get back and you'll be on the next ferry over.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- I think you're over...- Stay in the flat for as long as you like.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- Some central heating, that's what you need.- But...

0:05:15 > 0:05:18And after that, you're moving in with me and Neilly Beag.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Move in with my mother? But I'm 39 years old.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26- You could be 89 for all I care, you're still my son.- But I...

0:05:26 > 0:05:29I wouldn't argue. Not if she's in that mood.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Matthew should be getting into Oban about now.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38I can't believe you got him on the ferry.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42- His mouth must have really been hurting him.- Och, poor wee soul.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44- FROM ANOTHER ROOM: Grandma! - Yes, sweetheart?

0:05:44 > 0:05:49- Can you read me a story, please? - I'll be up in a minute.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Thanks for the lovely supper.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59- She's awful cheery in the circumstances.- Are you kidding?

0:05:59 > 0:06:01She's loving this.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Getting Matthew out of that hut and into a house with double glazing.

0:06:04 > 0:06:10- It's a dream come true.- But we don't have double glazing.- Not yet.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Mum's only doing what she thinks is best

0:06:12 > 0:06:14because she's never really understood Matthew.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Well, if he does move in with your mother it'll only

0:06:17 > 0:06:20- be for a week or two. - That'll be what she's telling him.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- What do you mean?- My mother is a very well-meaning woman.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Very well-meaning and very determined.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32The next day while I was at school, Grandma Mainland

0:06:32 > 0:06:35and Neilly Beag started to get Matthew's room ready.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37I brought this duvet set over from Glasgow.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41It's genuine Egyptian cotton.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44- Very nice.- Oh, and the wallpaper.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Did you phone that shop in Bearsden?

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Och, we could maybe just put a lick of pain paint on it.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54I've still got that tin from when I painted Mr McMaster's cowshed.

0:06:56 > 0:06:57I assume you're joking.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03- What?- Oh, I didn't say a word.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06But you were thinking it.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11My mind may be a total blank for all you know.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13It often is.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- This place is a death trap.- It's certainly a wee bit past its best.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24I suppose we should keep some of his bits and pieces.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I can't think what, though. Why doesn't he have a television?

0:07:27 > 0:07:31He loved watching telly when he was a boy.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Here, maybe we should get satellite installed.

0:07:33 > 0:07:38Mrs Baxter gets over 300 channels.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45You're doing it again.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Doing what? - Thinking something.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52It's not my fault, sometimes it just happens.

0:07:52 > 0:07:57Well, if you want to say something, I wish you would out and say it.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00All right, then. I will.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11Now, you know, I have the very highest opinion of you.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15In fact, I think you're far and away the finest women

0:08:15 > 0:08:18I've ever had the privilege to meet.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22But I think you're wrong.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27- 100% wrong.- What about?- Everything.

0:08:27 > 0:08:33The fancy duvet and the wallpaper and the 300 television channels.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36If Matthew wanted these things he'd have had them long ago.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40But that's just my point. He doesn't have anything out here.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43And that's exactly what he wants.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47No noise, no stuff, no complications.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Just peace and quiet

0:08:49 > 0:08:53and a place to hide from the world when he needs to.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00He's living out here because he wants to.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Because it's right for him.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07Dragging him back to the village is like putting a penguin in a sauna.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Now, you might like a sauna

0:09:10 > 0:09:15and even I might like a sauna, but penguins hate saunas.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18They hate them.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23- I'll tell you what I hate.- Go ahead.

0:09:23 > 0:09:29- I hate that you're always right. - No, nonsense.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37But where else can he stay? Yon hut's beyond fixing.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in the tent.- Oh, surely not.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Well, where's he pitched it, anyway?

0:09:44 > 0:09:49- You know, up by the loch, just past Mr McMaster's shieling.- Oh, aye.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Good fishing round there.- Where does the word shieling come from?

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Well, it's where the crofting women and children stayed during

0:09:56 > 0:10:00the summer months when the animals were up in the high pastures.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05But the word itself comes from a very old word meaning a shelter

0:10:05 > 0:10:09- or a place to hide away. - A place to hide away?- Mm-hmm.

0:10:11 > 0:10:16- I think I've just had one of my most brilliant ideas.- Is that right?

0:10:16 > 0:10:18But I'm going to need your help.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20In fact, I'm going to need everyone's help.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27I wish you'd say where you were taking me.

0:10:27 > 0:10:34- I told you, it's a surprise. Here we are.- And where is that exactly?

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- Matthew's new home.- The shieling?

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Mr McMaster says we're welcome to use it.

0:10:41 > 0:10:42It needs a bit of patching up

0:10:42 > 0:10:45but the walls are as solid as the day it was built.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48And who's going to do all this patching up?

0:10:48 > 0:10:52- We'd need a small army. - Funny you should say that...

0:10:52 > 0:10:53WHISTLE BLOWS

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Oh, my goodness.

0:11:46 > 0:11:52- So, what do you think? - Great but there's something missing.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56- What's that?- I've got it!

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Where are you going? Katie Morag!

0:12:08 > 0:12:09Come on, you lot,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13we've got an hour to get cleaned up before Matthew arrives.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28- There he is. Matthew. - I wish Katie Morag was here.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32- Well, if she's not, there must be a pretty good reason.- Hello, mother.

0:12:32 > 0:12:37- Hello.- Hi, Uncle Matthew. What did you get from the tooth fairy?

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Not a thing. Must have forgotten about me, eh?

0:12:41 > 0:12:45'He was smiling but I could tell he was a little bit sad.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47'He must've been so worried about his house.'

0:12:49 > 0:12:54- So, what's this big surprise, then? - You'll just have to wait and see.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58- What were you up to all afternoon? - You'll just have to wait and see too.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Right, come on, you.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Right, come on, then.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13THEY CHEER

0:13:17 > 0:13:20The tooth fairy may have forgotten you

0:13:20 > 0:13:23but some good fairies have been very busy.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26THEY CHEER AND WHISTLE

0:13:29 > 0:13:33I think he's got a wee bit of sand in his eye.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I reckon he has, at that.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Matthew moved into the shieling the very next day

0:13:39 > 0:13:41and he absolutely loved it. He still didn't like

0:13:41 > 0:13:45going to the mainland and he still hid away from time to time,

0:13:45 > 0:13:47but Grandma Mainland didn't moan about it any more.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51All she ever really wanted was for Matthew to be happy.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54And now she knew he was, that made her happy too.
