0:05:03 > 0:05:07Oh! I think I need a story to take my mind off the taste.

0:05:07 > 0:05:12There's a brilliant story which Sikhs remember at Vaisakhi,

0:05:12 > 0:05:15about how they all came to be like one big family.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Would you like to hear it?

0:05:17 > 0:05:19# Celebrate! #

0:05:19 > 0:05:22In the year 1699,

0:05:22 > 0:05:28Guru Gobind Singh called together thousands and thousands of Sikhs,

0:05:28 > 0:05:33to celebrate the harvest festival of Vaisakhi.

0:05:33 > 0:05:38The guru came out of his tent carrying a sword and announced

0:05:38 > 0:05:43that anyone prepared to give up his life should come forward.

0:05:43 > 0:05:48The crowd gasped. What was he going to do?!

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Everyone became quiet.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56Slowly, one man made his way through the crowd and Guru Gobind Singh

0:05:56 > 0:06:02took him into the tent. After a while, the guru came out,

0:06:02 > 0:06:06all alone, still holding his sword.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09But where had the other man gone?

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Everyone wondered what had happened inside.

0:06:13 > 0:06:19Guru Gobind Singh asked for more people to step forward,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21people ready to give up their lives.

0:06:21 > 0:06:27And one by one, he took four more men inside the tent.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Each time returning without them.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Everyone watching was very worried.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37What was the guru doing?!

0:06:37 > 0:06:43But Guru Gobind Singh opened the flap to his tent

0:06:43 > 0:06:48and revealed all five men, happy and healthy.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52This was a test, the guru explained,

0:06:52 > 0:06:57to see who was brave enough and willing to dedicate themselves

0:06:57 > 0:07:02to God. To defend their faith and to care for the poor.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06The guru then took a bowl of sweetened water called Amrit.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10He stirred it with a small sword, said some prayers

0:07:10 > 0:07:14and gave it to the five men to drink.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18He sprinkled what was left of it on their heads and eyes.

0:07:18 > 0:07:24The five men became know as the Panj Pyare, or the beloved five.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26From that point onwards,

0:07:26 > 0:07:30to show that they were all part of the one big family,

0:07:30 > 0:07:34all Sikh men were given the same surname, Singh,

0:07:34 > 0:07:38meaning Lion, and all the women were given

0:07:38 > 0:07:41the name Kaur, meaning princess.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Isn't that a great story?

0:07:44 > 0:07:49It would be amazing to have a name like lion or princess, wouldn't it?

0:07:49 > 0:07:51- My middle name is Tarquin. - PHONE RINGS

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Hello.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03It was...different.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Yes, I think it was toothpaste.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Never mind, at least my teeth are clean. I've got to go. Bye.
