0:00:37 > 0:00:40# A minibeast adventure...

0:00:40 > 0:00:41# ..with Jess! #

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47First, I have to tell you that today's minibeast

0:00:47 > 0:00:49is not everybody's favourite.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51But I think they're really cool.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Today, we're going on a fly adventure.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56So what's in here?

0:00:56 > 0:00:57I'll show you.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03They look a bit like caterpillars, don't they?

0:01:03 > 0:01:07Well, they kind of ARE caterpillars, but are flies.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09These are baby flies called maggots.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12They hatch out of eggs and, just like caterpillars,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16they eat and eat and grow bigger and bigger.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20And, do you know what happens to a caterpillar when it's fully grown?

0:01:20 > 0:01:23It wraps itself up into a pupa, goes to sleep

0:01:23 > 0:01:25and wakes up as a beautiful butterfly.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28The same thing happens with maggots.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29Have a look in here.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33These are fly pupae.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37Inside, a maggot is slowly turning into a fly, growing wings,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39eyes and legs.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43It's totally amazing that all that is happening

0:01:43 > 0:01:45inside this tiny package.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49In a few days, a fly emerges from the pupa.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Like these.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Look!

0:01:52 > 0:01:54They have shiny wings,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58huge big, red eyes and six legs.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Look at this one washing its face.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06And this one is feeding on a banana.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09What a massive, fat tongue it has!

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Isn't it incredible how quickly that maggot turned into this fly,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16which is quite a different creature?

0:02:16 > 0:02:21Even more amazingly, the fly can lay eggs after just three days.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25So, it goes egg, maggot, pupa, fly

0:02:25 > 0:02:28and the flies lay more eggs and they hatch into maggots

0:02:28 > 0:02:32which turn into pupa, which hatch into flies and they lay more eggs

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and so it goes round and round again.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37And that's the fly's life cycle.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41Flies live everywhere so I'm sure there's some living near you.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Shall we go and find some?

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Come on!

0:02:54 > 0:02:59Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Hi, Justin. Hi, Stanley.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08BOTH: Hi, Jess.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12- Today, we're going on a fly adventure.- OK.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- Have you seen any flies around here? - Yes.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17- Over there.- Great!

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Get your feelers ready then.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:22 > 0:03:26ALL: We're off on a minibeast adventure.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35- There's lots of flies over here. - Can you see any?

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Look! There's a fly.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39- Yes.- Do you think you can catch it?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Wait. It might come on my hand.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45- Can you see any flies that... - Yeah!

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- Did you see that? How on earth are we going to catch these?- I saw...

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- Oh, look. Oh! - Where have the nets gone?

0:03:52 > 0:03:55- You've got nets? - Yeah, we've got some nets.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Then we can catch it with.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Oh, yeah!

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Here you go, Stanley.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Look, there's one there. Can you get it?

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Oh! Ooh!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12JESS LAUGHS

0:04:12 > 0:04:15- There's one over there.- Where? - Oh, it's far away.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Shall we look over there?

0:04:17 > 0:04:19I found one!

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Oh, there's lots of them.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23There's one. There's one!

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Look by your feet.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28- Oh!- Another one!

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- Flies!- There's one. There's one. There, there, there!

0:04:33 > 0:04:35There's one there. That's just...

0:04:35 > 0:04:36..a spider!

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- Fly!- There's one. There's one!

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Oh, you were so close. Did you get it? Look!

0:04:44 > 0:04:46It's a massive one!

0:04:48 > 0:04:53- Look, it's walking on my hand. - It's a little bit like a spider.- Why?

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Because it's...

0:04:56 > 0:05:03The hair on the legs makes it sticky and then it walks on.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06It's got very sticky feet, hasn't it?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11For an insect, I think that's big.

0:05:11 > 0:05:12Yeah, really big.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Do you think they have very good eyesight?

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- Yeah.- No.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Oh! Justin thinks yes. Stanley thinks no.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23When I was trying to catch one, he was really fast.

0:05:23 > 0:05:24He just flew away quickly.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28Yes, if you're a flying insect, you do need really good eyesight.

0:05:28 > 0:05:29If someone tries to catch you,

0:05:29 > 0:05:33you have to be able to change direction really quickly.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37If I was a fly and I was a friend of yours, I would let you catch me.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Oh, that's nice!

0:05:42 > 0:05:47Flies have sticky stuff on their feet to help them climb.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50They can even walk upside down.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Imagine if you could do that!

0:05:56 > 0:06:00HE GIGGLES

0:06:00 > 0:06:02What do flies like to eat?

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Don't they like to eat poo?

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Yes, actually, flies do like to eat poo, don't they?

0:06:08 > 0:06:12That's great because what would happen to all the poo everywhere

0:06:12 > 0:06:16- if flies didn't eat poo? - It would be all over the place.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Yeah, it would be, wouldn't it?

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Flies do like to eat other things apart from poo, don't they?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24So, we thought we'd do an experiment

0:06:24 > 0:06:26to see which foods they like the best.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30- What have you got on your plate, Justin?- Cat food and pizza.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Here you go. Here's a picture of some cat food and pizza

0:06:33 > 0:06:36for you to record how many flies land there.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- What have you got, Stanley? - I've got hummus and jam.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44There's your clipboard. I've got banana and sausage.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46THEY GIGGLE

0:06:46 > 0:06:49So, which one is going to attract the most flies?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55There's a fly! There's a fly! Oh, it's eating the cat food.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58One to Justin.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03He's actually eating it with his hands.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07- Shall we move over there to see if they come if we move away?- OK.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Oh, pizza!

0:07:10 > 0:07:14And cat food. Oh, oh, it's gone to my plate. Aw!

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Cat food!

0:07:16 > 0:07:18Pizza.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22- It's on the cat food as well. - Yeah, baby.- You got one. You got one!

0:07:24 > 0:07:27There's another one. Oh, oh...

0:07:27 > 0:07:29- Pizza.- NO!

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Two on my plate! Oh!

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Cat food.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38They love your plate, Justin. Shall we add up how many flies we got?

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- Yeah.- Yes? Well it's easy for me to do. Zero.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Jam got one.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Pizza, four. - How much did cat food get?

0:07:48 > 0:07:51One, two, three, four, five, six,

0:07:51 > 0:07:53seven, eight, nine.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Nine!

0:07:56 > 0:08:00That's probably because it was the smelliest.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02I think we lost, didn't we, Stanley?

0:08:02 > 0:08:05I think I was the second to lose.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Yes, I completely lost. OK.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16That was a funny minibeast adventure, wasn't it?

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Maybe you could go on a fly adventure too.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20They're pretty easy to find,

0:08:20 > 0:08:23especially if you're around cat food.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25See if you can spot their big fly eyes

0:08:25 > 0:08:27and, if you watch them feeding,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30maybe you can see their big fat tongues.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Happy hunting, adventurers!
