0:00:39 > 0:00:41With Jess!

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47I've got some beautiful minibeasts in here.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Painted lady butterflies.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I've grown them since they were caterpillars.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55First, they were eggs, then they hatched into caterpillars,

0:00:55 > 0:00:59and they ate and ate and got bigger and bigger,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03and finally they wrapped themselves in a chrysalis and went to sleep.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07This morning, something amazing happened.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14The chrysalis opened up.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26And out came...a butterfly!

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Isn't it the most incredible thing,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35that change from caterpillar to butterfly?

0:01:35 > 0:01:39I've put the butterfly in here with its friend to show you

0:01:39 > 0:01:42before I let them fly away. Let's have a closer look.

0:01:42 > 0:01:48Butterflies have four wings. One, two, three, four.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Sometimes, you can see butterflies sunbathing,

0:01:51 > 0:01:55opening their wings to warm them in the sun.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Butterflies have six legs and two antennae,

0:01:59 > 0:02:04which they use for sensing the world around them.

0:02:04 > 0:02:09Butterflies feed by sucking through a thing called a proboscis,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12which is like a long drinking straw.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17They drink nectar from flowers, but this one is drinking orange juice!

0:02:17 > 0:02:22Look at the way the proboscis rolls up and then unwinds.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26That's a great word, isn't it? "Proboscis".

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Have you seen a butterfly where you live?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33There's sure to be one nearby. Shall we go and find one?

0:02:33 > 0:02:34Come on!

0:02:41 > 0:02:47Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:52 > 0:02:57- Hi, Joseph. Hi, Florence. - Hi, Jess!- Great to see you.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Today, we're going on a butterfly adventure.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04And a spider adventure. And a flower adventure.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08- All of those minibeasts are things we might see...- And a worm.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Who knows what we're going to see? Get your feelers ready.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:14 > 0:03:19We're off on a Minibeast Adventure! Come on, then!

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Can you see any? Oh, look!

0:03:29 > 0:03:32- There, I see it!- Butterfly!

0:03:32 > 0:03:37There's a butterfly right here, look. Isn't that beautiful?

0:03:37 > 0:03:42- It's orange and black. - Where did the white one fly?

0:03:42 > 0:03:46There was a white one there, this one is orange and black.

0:03:46 > 0:03:52- What about that one?- That's a bee. - Bees collect pollen to make honey.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56That's exactly right, bees do collect pollen to make honey!

0:03:56 > 0:04:01- I don't see any.- You have to look really, really carefully.

0:04:01 > 0:04:07- There is one! I saw it. Now it's gone.- I missed it.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Did you see it, Joseph?

0:04:09 > 0:04:13I missed it. What colour was it, Florence? It was a white one.

0:04:13 > 0:04:19- Another white butterfly. Lovely. - How about vegetables?

0:04:19 > 0:04:24- A vegetables butterfly?- Yes.- What butterflies live on vegetables?

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Black or white.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31That's so right - there is a butterfly that lives on cabbages

0:04:31 > 0:04:34called the cabbage white. And it's a white butterfly.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37You're so smart, Florence.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41- Do you know how butterflies eat from flowers?- They eat honey.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44That was right, did you see what Joseph just did?

0:04:44 > 0:04:46And what Florence said was right as well.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51They eat the honey, the nectar, from the middle of the flowers,

0:04:51 > 0:04:52using what?

0:04:52 > 0:04:57Exactly like that! With their long tongues, like this.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Is your tongue as long as a butterfly?

0:05:03 > 0:05:07Butterflies' tongues are so long that they have to curl them up

0:05:07 > 0:05:10to put them in their mouth.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14- Can you imagine that? - Why do they have to curl them up?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Because their tongues are so long, like this long,

0:05:17 > 0:05:22- so they have to curl it up to put it inside their mouth.- Like this.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26Like that, yes, a bit like that. Oh!

0:05:28 > 0:05:33- I saw one flew to a flower and then it did this.- Really?

0:05:33 > 0:05:35That's exactly what happens.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39They fly like this to a flower, and they stop and drink

0:05:39 > 0:05:42and shut their wings like that.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Butterfly, butterfly, eat some honey.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49They don't eat honey!

0:05:49 > 0:05:54They drink the nectar from the flower, that's what they do.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58I'm flying to a flower, I've got my wings shut and I...

0:05:58 > 0:06:00HE SLURPS

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Ha-ha! Little butterflies!

0:06:02 > 0:06:06How do you taste your food?

0:06:06 > 0:06:10With your mouth and tongue, of course.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13But a butterfly tastes its food with its feet.

0:06:16 > 0:06:22Imagine doing that! Mum wouldn't be very pleased if you did.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29If you want to attract butterflies, you can make a butterfly feeder.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32We're making butterfly feeders that look like flowers!

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Now, Florence and Joseph have decorated their petals

0:06:36 > 0:06:40beautifully for their flowers, haven't you? That's lovely.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44- I did a flower.- You did a beautiful flower.- And I did.

0:06:44 > 0:06:50Those are your flowers, and we've got water bottles as the stems.

0:06:50 > 0:06:55So, we're going to take our flowers and put them onto the stems,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57like that. Can you do that?

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Excellent, that's great. So, the flowers are on the stems.

0:07:03 > 0:07:09- All that's left is... What do butterflies eat?- Honey!

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Honey, the nectar in the middle of the flowers.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14So that's what we need next.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17We need nectar for our butterflies to drink.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Would you like to choose a bit of cotton wool?

0:07:19 > 0:07:24You push that just in the top of the bottle, not all the way in.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- Why?- Because the bit that matters is this bit here.

0:07:29 > 0:07:34I'm going to put some sweet sugar water on there which is

0:07:34 > 0:07:36like nectar from flowers.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Do you think butterflies are going to come and drink this water?

0:07:40 > 0:07:44It's very sweet. There. I think they're ready now.

0:07:44 > 0:07:50- So, where shall we put our butterfly feeders?- Over there!- Come on then!

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Now, all we have to do is wait for the butterflies to come

0:07:57 > 0:08:00and eat from our feeders.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- Let's watch.- Yes, let's watch.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08I loved our butterfly adventure.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10Making those feeders was so much fun.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14Maybe you could have a butterfly adventure too.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Find a sunny, flowery spot and wait

0:08:16 > 0:08:20and the butterflies will come to you.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Now, it's time to release my butterflies.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27I hope they lay lots of eggs around here.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Happy hunting, adventurers!
