0:00:40 > 0:00:41With Jess!

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48This minibeast has lots of legs.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Insects like ladybirds, butterflies and bees

0:00:51 > 0:00:52have six legs.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Spiders have eight legs.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57But this minibeast has even more than that.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00It's a millipede.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03And just look at all those legs.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Can you see them running along the bottom?

0:01:10 > 0:01:12When you say the word 'millipede',

0:01:12 > 0:01:15it sounds like they might have one million legs.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Million-pede.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19But they don't actually have that many.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21These ones have about 150,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24and that's still a lot more than any other creature.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Millipedes are very good at burrowing.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31They move their bodies like waves

0:01:31 > 0:01:33and push themselves through the soil,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35a bit like a worm.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49A lot of people mix up millipedes with centipedes.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51And they do look quite similar.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54So, I've got both of them for us to have a look at.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56There's quite a lot of differences.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Have a look at this centipede.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00It's much flatter,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03and its body comes in big sections.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Now, if we look at the millipede,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13can you see it has much smaller sections,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15and a lot more short legs,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18like a brush underneath its body.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Centipedes are designed for speed

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and like to rush around to hunt small insects.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27But a millipede moves more slowly

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and its legs move like a wave.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Centipedes are meat eaters

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and eat insects and worms,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37whilst millipedes are vegetarians

0:02:37 > 0:02:39and eat dead wood, plants and leaves.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44I think it's time we went to see if there's a millipede living near you.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49We might have to look really carefully, as they're hiding

0:02:49 > 0:02:50during the day.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Shall we give it a try?

0:02:55 > 0:02:56Come on!

0:03:04 > 0:03:08Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:14 > 0:03:17- Hi, Mia. Hi, Talia. - Hi, Jess.- Hello, Jess.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18Great to see you.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Today, we're off on a millipede adventure.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23What's a millipede?

0:03:23 > 0:03:27A millipede is long and wiggly, a bit like a worm,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30but it's got lots and lots of legs and a hard shell.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Are we going to find one?

0:03:32 > 0:03:33I hope so.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Shall we get our feelers ready?

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- ALL:- Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42We're off on a minibeast adventure.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- Do you think there might be a millipede down here?- Yep.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Where do you think a millipede lives?

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Down, down, down and down.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Down, down, down, on the floor.

0:03:59 > 0:04:00You've got to dig for this.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02What's that?!

0:04:02 > 0:04:03BOTH: A spider!

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Wow, isn't that beautiful?

0:04:05 > 0:04:06It made a spider web.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- How many legs does a spider have? - Eight.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13And we are looking for an animal that has even more legs than eight.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Then more...more than 200.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19- Shall we have a look over there? - Yep.- Come on, then.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I think we have to dig for some.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29- BOTH:- Ah!

0:04:29 > 0:04:31- Two worms!- No, those are not worms,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34- although they look like worms. - They're centipedes!

0:04:34 > 0:04:37No, these are what we were looking for.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39These are millipedes.

0:04:39 > 0:04:40MIA SCREAMS

0:04:40 > 0:04:42And another one!

0:04:42 > 0:04:43- Can I hold it?- Yeah.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46What does it feel like?

0:04:46 > 0:04:47SHE SCREAMS

0:04:47 > 0:04:49It feels tickly.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Ha-ha.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Would you like to hold it, Talia? - It's not scary.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55- Take it.- You don't want to?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58- Do you want to have a really close look at it?- Yeah.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00OK, let me get a box out of my kit bag.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03So, you're going to see it really closely.

0:05:03 > 0:05:04Wow.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07There you go, Talia. Look through there, it's magnified.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08It has these things.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11It does have those things, feelers.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13What do you think it feels with its feelers?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16My one's trying to climb up to get out.

0:05:16 > 0:05:17Oh.

0:05:19 > 0:05:20Shall we see how they walk?

0:05:20 > 0:05:22- Yeah.- Shall we put one in here?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28They walk strange.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Look at its legs!

0:05:30 > 0:05:32So many.

0:05:32 > 0:05:33Ha-ha, loads of legs.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38They actually have got lots of legs. Bleurgh.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40How many legs do you think?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42199.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45- 199? That could be quite accurate. - Wow.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48- Can I hold it again? - Yes, of course you can.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50- I like holding it.- Do you?

0:05:50 > 0:05:54- Yeah.- Look, they are walking with their legs.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56- Are they good at walking? - Yes, I think so.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Well, they are. Not think so - I think they are.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01No, not think so - they are!

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- Ha-ha. - They are very clever at walking.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08How do you breathe?

0:06:11 > 0:06:13You use your nose and mouth.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19But a millipede breathes through holes along the side of its body.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Ha-ha.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Sometimes it can seem like there's no minibeasts about at all.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35That's because minibeasts love to hide,

0:06:35 > 0:06:39and if you look beneath the surface, there might be something hiding.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43I'm going to take a scoop from Mia's garden to see what we can find.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Shall we see what's hiding in your garden, Mia?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- A snail.- Is there a snail? Where?

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Oh, yes!

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Shall we put that in here to have a look at it?

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- It's a baby one.- I think... - Look! It's blowing bubbles!

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- Wow, it is! Can you see that, Mia? - ALL:- Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09- Look!- Eurgh!

0:07:09 > 0:07:10Wow!

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Ha-ha-ha.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Some people call them daddy-longlegs.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- Cos they've got long legs. - My dad calls it that.- Does he?

0:07:18 > 0:07:20That's called a harvestman.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Eugh, slug.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- No, it's a worm.- That is a slug.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Urgh.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28I thought it was a snail.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30- What is that?- Earwig, I think.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Oh, it is the same colour as an earwig.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35That one is called a centipede.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- I told you.- Did you? - You said it isn't a centipede.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- You said it was an earwig. - Oh, yes, I said it was an earwig.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43- BOTH:- Aw.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46- They're so little. - Does anyone know what that is?

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- A woodlice.- A woodlouse.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50I found something.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52What is that?!

0:07:52 > 0:07:53A centipede.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Oh, not a centipede.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57Millipede.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01What a lot of minibeasts we found in your garden.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04And the last thing we found was this lovely millipede, wasn't it?

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Yeah.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07This is cool.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14I loved that minibeast adventure.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18It's amazing how many creatures you can find, wherever you live.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Maybe you could go on a millipede adventure too.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23There's sure to be one living near you.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Look in dark, damp places.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28A grown-up adventurer might need to lift things up

0:08:28 > 0:08:30to look underneath.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Happy hunting, adventurers.
