0:00:04 > 0:00:06Hello, adventurers. I'm Jess.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09It's time for a Minibeast Adventure!
0:00:10 > 0:00:13# Feelers out, what's about?
0:00:13 > 0:00:16# Creeping, sleeping, under stones here and there
0:00:16 > 0:00:20# Nesting, resting Minibeasts are everywhere
0:00:20 > 0:00:24# Minibeasts are everywhere Look and listen, stop and stare
0:00:24 > 0:00:28# Minibeasts are everywhere A Minibeast Adventure
0:00:28 > 0:00:31# Feelers out, what's about?
0:00:31 > 0:00:35# Minibeasts are everywhere Look and listen, stop and stare
0:00:35 > 0:00:41# Many worlds for us to share A Minibeast Adventure
0:00:41 > 0:00:43# With Jess. #
0:00:43 > 0:00:47Welcome to my treehouse. This minibeast has a very funny name.
0:00:47 > 0:00:52It's called an earwig but first let's get one thing out of the way.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54They don't go in your ears.
0:00:54 > 0:00:59They live in dark, damp places, like in rotting leaves.
0:01:02 > 0:01:06They're lovely and shiny, aren't they?
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Earwigs usually come out at night.
0:01:08 > 0:01:13Ooh, so I've might have woken these ones up. Sorry, earwigs.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16Look at its shiny, long, leathery body.
0:01:16 > 0:01:21Perfect for sliding into small cracks or under bits of bark.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Earwigs have long antennae
0:01:27 > 0:01:30that help them sense the world around them.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34As with all insects, earwigs have six legs.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37They also have wings which are difficult to spot
0:01:37 > 0:01:39because earwigs don't fly a lot.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43But the most interesting part of an earwig is its pincers.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46Look at these. Aren't they amazing?
0:01:46 > 0:01:50Earwigs use their pincers to catch other creatures and eat them.
0:01:50 > 0:01:54They also use their pincers to protect themselves
0:01:54 > 0:01:57and they could give you a little nip, but it wouldn't hurt.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01Now, the really cool thing about their pincers is that you can
0:02:01 > 0:02:04tell whether it's a male, a boy earwig,
0:02:04 > 0:02:06or a female, a girl earwig,
0:02:06 > 0:02:08by the shape of their pincers.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11Let's have a look.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15This is the boy and he has curved pincers.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19And here's a girl earwig. She has straight pincers.
0:02:22 > 0:02:27So there's something to look out for when we go on our earwig adventure.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29Now, guess what?
0:02:29 > 0:02:31You might not have seen it
0:02:31 > 0:02:35but there is probably an earwig living right near you.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37Shall we go and find it?
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Come on!
0:02:47 > 0:02:53Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!
0:02:57 > 0:03:01- Hi, Muhammad. Hi, Sidney. - Hi, Jess.- Hi, Jess.
0:03:01 > 0:03:06Great to see you. Today we're going on an earwig adventure.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Earwigs come out at night, but it's day, isn't it?
0:03:10 > 0:03:13So we're going to have to look really hard.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16Do you think you can do that?
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Get your feelers ready then.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20Feelers out, what's about?
0:03:20 > 0:03:23We're off on a Minibeast Adventure!
0:03:29 > 0:03:31What have we got in here?
0:03:31 > 0:03:33HE SCREAMS
0:03:33 > 0:03:36- I want to pick it up.- What is it?
0:03:36 > 0:03:40That's a slug. Wow! Look at that.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44That's a tiny slug.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48It's a bit too slimy to be an earwig, though, isn't it?
0:03:48 > 0:03:49Shall we put him back?
0:03:49 > 0:03:54Because we're not looking for slugs, we're looking for earwigs.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57- Is there anywhere else we could look?- BOTH: On the balcony!
0:03:57 > 0:04:00On the balcony! Great, let's go.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Sidney's playing inside but we're
0:04:06 > 0:04:09- still going to have an earwig adventure, aren't we?- Yeah!
0:04:09 > 0:04:14I'm going to give you something special in case we find an earwig.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18It's a special box to put it in. Can you look after that for me?
0:04:18 > 0:04:23Excellent. Now, where on this balcony could we find earwigs?
0:04:23 > 0:04:25- In the flower.- In the flower, brilliant.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27Let's have a look then.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30Earwigs like damp, dark places,
0:04:30 > 0:04:34so maybe they might be living underneath the pot.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40Shall we have a look?
0:04:40 > 0:04:44Can you see anything down there?
0:04:44 > 0:04:47- Yeah.- What's that?
0:04:47 > 0:04:49Wow, that's beautiful. What is it?
0:04:49 > 0:04:53- It's got a long tail. - Shall we see if we can catch it?
0:04:53 > 0:04:56- I can catch it.- You can catch it, can you?
0:04:59 > 0:05:01Yes, you've got it!
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Wow! We found an earwig.
0:05:07 > 0:05:11- High-five. Yes!- It's got two things.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13What are those things?
0:05:15 > 0:05:20- Crab snappers.- Crab snappers! They are crab snappers, aren't they?
0:05:20 > 0:05:24They're like crabs' claws on the back of its bum.
0:05:24 > 0:05:29What do you think she uses those crab snappers, those pincers, for?
0:05:29 > 0:05:33- Eating stuff. - For catching stuff to eat?
0:05:33 > 0:05:36What do her pincers look like?
0:05:36 > 0:05:40- This.- Straight, aren't they? Yeah, really straight.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42And that means she is a girl.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45And if she was a boy she would have pincers like?
0:05:45 > 0:05:47- Fat.- Fat. Yeah, like curved.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50Shall we put her back with her friends now?
0:05:51 > 0:05:54Come on then. Put her back under the plant.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Do you know where your skeleton is?
0:06:03 > 0:06:06It's right inside your body.
0:06:11 > 0:06:15But an earwig has its skeleton on the outside of its body,
0:06:15 > 0:06:18which helps to keep it safe.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23One way we can help earwigs and other minibeasts in the garden is
0:06:23 > 0:06:25to leave an untidy corner, somewhere outside,
0:06:25 > 0:06:28so they can come and hide in it.
0:06:28 > 0:06:33Earwigs love old logs and leaves so we have some here to build
0:06:33 > 0:06:37- an earwig hotel. Can you help me? - Yes.- Excellent.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40So, we're going to take some of these logs and put them
0:06:40 > 0:06:43as tight as we can in that corner down there.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47Would you like one, Sidney? There you go.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49Lots of minibeasts can come and hide there.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53There's one on there already. What a brilliant hotel.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57That was a woodlouse. Do you want to put that one down there as well?
0:06:57 > 0:07:01We'll make a nice pile. Oh, these ones aren't real logs.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04These are cardboard, that's been rolled up to look like
0:07:04 > 0:07:07a log, but they've got lots of places for insects to hide.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10Keep it in that corner as much as you can, that's it.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13- I'm making a slide for them. - Excellent, a slide.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15What do you think would use the slide?
0:07:15 > 0:07:17A slug on a slide?
0:07:17 > 0:07:21Do you think the slugs might use your slide? Yeah, brilliant.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24Who do you think might hide in here?
0:07:24 > 0:07:30- Wiggly worm.- Wiggly worm. Maybe, yes.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34Oh, you need another bit, Sidney? Here you go.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37- Oh!- What's there?- Nothing.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Look in there! Wow, can you see that, Sidney?
0:07:40 > 0:07:42Look in there.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Woodlice.- What's that? - That's a bit of old cloth.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51One of their favourite things to hide in.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54Would you like another piece of wood to put in?
0:07:54 > 0:07:57There you go. I think that's the last bit.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Now we just need to leave the hotel alone
0:08:01 > 0:08:05and see if any minibeasts or any earwigs move in.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16You can find minibeasts wherever you live, and hopefully
0:08:16 > 0:08:20Muhammad and Sidney will have some moving into their woodpile.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23You could go on an earwig adventure.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26You might have to look very hard and you might need
0:08:26 > 0:08:30a grown-up to lift things up so you can look underneath.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34If you do spot an earwig, you can see if it's a male or a female.
0:08:34 > 0:08:40Feelers out, what's about? Happy hunting, adventurers.
