0:00:41 > 0:00:42# With Jess! #

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46Have a look at these.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Most people think they're spiders,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53but they're not.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54They're harvestmen.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Some people are a little bit scared of them,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59but I think they're amazing.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01There's really nothing to be scared of.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Shall we have a closer look?

0:01:03 > 0:01:07Our harvestman certainly does have long legs.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10So you can see why people call it a daddy-longlegs.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13It's almost as if it's walking on stilts.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17And look how tiny its body is.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Can you see that little bump on its head?

0:01:19 > 0:01:21That's where its eyes are.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23It has two eyes, like we do,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26but it doesn't have very good eyesight.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29So it mostly feels its way around

0:01:29 > 0:01:31with its long, sensitive legs.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36Harvestmen hear, taste and smell using their legs.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39One more amazing thing about harvestmen is that

0:01:39 > 0:01:43sometimes you can find a harvestman with seven legs instead of eight

0:01:43 > 0:01:46and that's because they have a special trick,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49a life-saver if something's trying to catch them.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53If something grabs their leg, they can drop it and run away.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Now, that's really cool,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58but it's also kind of sad because they don't grow back

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and, as we know, they use those long legs

0:02:01 > 0:02:03for smelling, tasting and hearing.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06So that's like losing your nose, mouth and ears.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09So we need to treat them very carefully.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Now, there's a very good chance

0:02:11 > 0:02:14that there's a harvestman living near you.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Shall we go and find one?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Come on.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Hi, Nathan. Hi, Daisy.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- Hi, Jess.- Hi, Jess.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Great to see you! Hi.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47Today, we're going on a harvestman adventure.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49- Do you know what a harvestman is? - No.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Have you ever seen a daddy-longlegs?

0:02:52 > 0:02:54- No.- No.- No?

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Well, maybe I can show you some today, then.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Get your feelers ready.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01ALL: Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:01 > 0:03:04We're off on a Minibeast Adventure.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13Shall we look down here?

0:03:16 > 0:03:18There's a spider, there.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Yeah, there is a spider web there.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Yeah, a tiny spider.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24- I saw an even bigger one. - Did you? Where?

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Is that one of those ones? - Is that one?

0:03:28 > 0:03:29Oh, wow.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31That's incredible.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Look at this.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36What is that?

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Spider.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40A spider?

0:03:40 > 0:03:42It does look a lot like a spider, doesn't it?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44But this isn't a spider,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47this is what we've been looking for.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49This is a harvestman.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51What does it look like?

0:03:51 > 0:03:55- Big.- It looks like a spider but it's not a spider.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57No, it's not a spider.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00What do you think it's doing with this big long leg here?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02I think it's broken.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05It has actually got one leg missing, you're right.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08It's supposed to have eight legs, like spiders,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11because it is closely related to spiders.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Would you like to hold it, Daisy?

0:04:14 > 0:04:15- Yes.- Here you go.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20It's just feeling you to see if you're safe to walk on.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22DAISY GIGGLES

0:04:22 > 0:04:23It likes it.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27- THEY LAUGH - That tickles.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29- That tickles!- It is quite ticklish.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Would you like to hold it, Nathan?

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Why's it bended its knee?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41- It's putting it under so he can clean it with his mouth.- Oh.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44NATHAN SCREAMS

0:04:44 > 0:04:47THEY LAUGH

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- Does that tickle, Nathan?- Yeah.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53He's feeling your ear.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59- Can you see what colour its body is? - Blue.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02Navy blue.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Navy blue, it is, isn't it?

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Why are those dots on him?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Well, that's a very good question.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13It's got lots of dots, hasn't it?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16And its leg bends in all of those different places.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Like this?

0:05:18 > 0:05:20A bit like that, yeah.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22- Actually, it's more like this. - Knees.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26- Knees, yes. And how many knees do you have?- Two.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Two, one on each leg.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31How many knees does the harvestman have?

0:05:31 > 0:05:32Can you count them?

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- Six.- Yeah, it's got lots of knees on each leg, hasn't it?

0:05:36 > 0:05:39It's leg bends in lots of different places.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41What do you think your legs would be like

0:05:41 > 0:05:44if you had lots of knees, like that?

0:05:46 > 0:05:47Like...

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Do you think you'd be like that?

0:05:53 > 0:05:57Do you think you'd have long legs if you had lots and lots of knees?

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Would they be really long?

0:05:59 > 0:06:01One there, one there, one there...

0:06:01 > 0:06:04- One everywhere.- Yeah.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05Even on your head.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07And on your eyes.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Well, he hasn't got any knees on his head,

0:06:10 > 0:06:13but that would be funny, wouldn't it?

0:06:20 > 0:06:23If your legs grew like a harvestman's legs,

0:06:23 > 0:06:27you'd be able to cross roads by stepping from one pavement

0:06:27 > 0:06:31to the other without treading on a crossing at all.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Lots of people think that harvestmen are spiders,

0:06:36 > 0:06:38but they're not spiders.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43So we're going to have a look at a harvestman and a spider

0:06:43 > 0:06:46to see if we can see the differences.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50What can you see that's different about harvestmen and spiders?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Well, the legs are very different.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Spiders' legs are hairy but harvestmen's legs are...

0:07:01 > 0:07:03..not hairy.

0:07:03 > 0:07:09Well, it looks like the harvestman's body is smaller than the spider's.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- What about the shape of them?- Oval.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Yeah, the harvestman has an oval body.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17What does the spider's body look like?

0:07:17 > 0:07:21It's an upside-down triangle shape, kind of.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Yeah, and it's got a head and then a body, hasn't it?

0:07:24 > 0:07:27It's got sort of two bits, can you see that?

0:07:27 > 0:07:30The harvestman, its head is sort of part of its body

0:07:30 > 0:07:33and it's all one big circle, like that, isn't it?

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Spiders make their homes out of webs.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Yes, they make their homes out of webs.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Harvestmen can't make silk and they can't make webs.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Spiders do make webs from their silk.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48So if harvestmen can't live in webs because they can't make silk,

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- where do they live?- In a bush?

0:07:50 > 0:07:55In bushes, yes. We did find one in a bush earlier, didn't we?

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Wow, that's so cool.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I loved that Minibeast Adventure,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06it was funny how they crawled all over us, wasn't it?

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Maybe you could go on a harvestman adventure, too.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12There's a good chance there's one living near you,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14but you need to look very carefully.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18As we discovered, they're nothing to be scared of.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20In fact, they're really amazing.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Happy hunting, adventurers!
