0:00:43 > 0:00:46Welcome to my tree house. Come and look at this.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48This is my ant farm.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Ants are amazing creatures.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Lots of insects live by themselves

0:00:52 > 0:00:55and have to find their food all on their own,

0:00:55 > 0:00:59but ants live with lots of other ants in groups called colonies.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Colonies live deep underground, where it's dark, in nests.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06So, I keep the back of my ants covered up.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Shall we see what they're up to?

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Wow, look at them all. They look busy.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20That big ant is the queen.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Every nest has just one queen,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and it's her job to lay eggs and bring up the baby ants.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31All the other ants here are worker ants.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35They all have different jobs to do.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39Those white sausage-shaped things are going to hatch into ants

0:01:39 > 0:01:42and the worker ants are looking after them.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50And look! Can you see that little white ant?

0:01:50 > 0:01:52That's a baby that's just hatched,

0:01:52 > 0:01:57but as it grows, it will get darker and look just like the other ants.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05Ants are some of the most successful creatures on earth.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06My colony has about 100 ants,

0:02:06 > 0:02:10but ant colonies can have many thousands of ants.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12It shouldn't be too difficult

0:02:12 > 0:02:15to find an ant where you live. Shall we go and find some?

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Come on!

0:02:23 > 0:02:29Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:33 > 0:02:36- Hi, Elizabeth. Hi, Samara. - BOTH: Hi, Jess!

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Great to meet you.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Today, we're going on an ant adventure.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Have you ever seen an ant before?

0:02:42 > 0:02:45- BOTH: Yeah.- What are they like?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48- Brown.- Where do you think we might find some?

0:02:48 > 0:02:50BOTH: Everywhere!

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Everywhere? Well, come on, then.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Get your feelers ready.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57ALL: Feelers out, what's about?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00We're off on a Minibeast Adventure.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12You were right, they are everywhere!

0:03:12 > 0:03:13What about here?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17- Yeah!- Yes.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20We found two ants.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23I bet there's more, because where there's one,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26there's always lots, because ants live in ant hills.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- Do you think we could find one of those?- BOTH: Yeah.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Shall we try?

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Yeah. We need to look everywhere and stop anywhere we like.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Yes, absolutely.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41A bug went in here.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Where are they going?

0:03:44 > 0:03:45I don't know.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Follow it.

0:03:47 > 0:03:48Follow it, yeah.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51JESS GASPS

0:03:52 > 0:03:54- I can see loads of bugs on this! - Wow.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58- There's loads of ants, aren't there?- All over it.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02- Do you think this might be the ant hill?- BOTH: Yeah.- Yes, it is.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- This is the ant hill. - They're quite small.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07And they need to go in tiny holes.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11- Do you know how we can see things that are really small better?- Yeah.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13- How?- A magnifying glass.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17- A magnifying glass, would you like one as well, Samara?- Yeah.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20We can look at the ants really closely through those.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22They're running fast.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Hey, I can see them now.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27They look like a crocodile.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Like green, with big teeth?

0:04:30 > 0:04:35No. There's one on your magnifying glass.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38There's loads on your hands.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42They're crawling all over you.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Because they have tiny legs.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46That's a lot of ants, isn't it?

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Yeah, I can see without them. They're playing.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53They're playing? What do you think they're playing?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Run.- Run. Chasing.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Do they eat fruit?

0:04:58 > 0:05:03- They do eat fruit, they love fruit and they love sweet things.- Yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06How many ants do you think live in this ant hill?

0:05:06 > 0:05:07- 100!- 100?

0:05:07 > 0:05:09How many do you think?

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- 145.- 145? I think...

0:05:12 > 0:05:14152.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19- 154.- Wow.- 152.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21I think it might be even more than that.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26Inside ant hills, there can be thousands and thousands of ants.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29- Can you believe that?- Yeah.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31I can see every one of them.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40If you eat the right food, will it make you into a queen?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42No, of course it won't.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48But if a baby ant is fed the right food,

0:05:48 > 0:05:50it'll turn into a queen ant.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Now, I'm going to show you how to make your own ant farm,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02so you can see what's going on inside that ant hill.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Firstly, you need a clear plastic pot, like this one.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- You fill it with sand. Can you girls help me with that?- Yeah.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Here you go, Samara.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13So, we put some sand in here...

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- Very good, that looks great. Can you put some leaves in?- Yeah.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- Look what I've got. - Oh, go on, put that one in.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Very nice.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28And shall we give them a bit of water to drink?

0:06:28 > 0:06:30BOTH: Yeah.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33There we go. Now, we need to get some ants.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- One more leaf!- Go on, then.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38So, the ant hill is just there.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Get this leaf and try and see if you can get an ant on there,

0:06:41 > 0:06:45and you get one on that one, Elizabeth.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49- I didn't get one.- You didn't get one? You have to be quite patient.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Look, there's one on this!

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Well done, Samara, that's excellent.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59And we drop it in, there's our first ant.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00Look, it's climbing on me.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Shall we see if we can get some of these ones in?

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Blow on my hand.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Blow, Samara.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12There we go, we've got lots in there now. Excellent.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- Do you think they like their home? - Yeah.- Shall we give them some food?

0:07:16 > 0:07:21- Yeah.- As a special treat, I've got a...

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- ALL: Raspberry. - Do you want to put it in?- Yeah.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Ah, one's on the raspberry.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Well, now we can put the lid on.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31It's got some holes in so they can breathe.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34And soon, they should make some tunnels,

0:07:34 > 0:07:35like they do in that ant hill.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38But after a few days we'll let them go again,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40to go back with their friends.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43So, we won't keep them in here for very long.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44For years?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47No, for a few days.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56We were so lucky to find that ant hill, weren't we?

0:07:56 > 0:08:00I wonder how many ants there were, busily working inside.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05My ants are still busy working here, collecting food for the queen.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Maybe you could go on an ant adventure.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12There's sure to be some ants living near you.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Maybe you could even follow the ants to find the nest.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18But of course, if you do, you must remember,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20don't disturb it.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Happy hunting, adventurers!
