0:00:40 > 0:00:42# ..with Jess. #

0:00:44 > 0:00:46I'm very lucky in my tree house

0:00:46 > 0:00:51that lots of spiders have decided to make their homes here.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54And this is my special spider friend, Sophie.

0:00:56 > 0:01:01Sophie is so happy here that she's even decided to lay some eggs.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02I can't wait till they hatch

0:01:02 > 0:01:06and there's lots of tiny spiderlings around.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10I know that lots of people think spiders are scary,

0:01:10 > 0:01:13but Sophie and I are here to tell you they're not.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15They're amazing.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19And actually they're quite shy, and tend to hide away from people.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23In some countries, spiders are considered good luck.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27So let's take a closer look at how brilliant Sophie really is.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31Like all spiders, she has eight legs.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Spiders can also have up to eight eyes.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Can you see Sophie's eyes?

0:01:38 > 0:01:39She has six.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45And look at the hairs on her legs.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49She uses those hairs to sense movements in her web.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00But not all spiders make webs.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Some catch insects by chasing them, like wolves.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Come and have a look.

0:02:06 > 0:02:11Here's another special spider friend of mine. This is Nancy.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Isn't she beautiful?

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Some people think she looks a bit scary

0:02:16 > 0:02:19but there is really no reason to be scared of her.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21So let's take a closer look.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Wolf spiders and house spiders don't have webs,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29so they have to chase insects to catch and eat them.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Look how fast Nancy is.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38And she has really good eyesight too.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45I wonder if there is a Sophie or a Nancy living near you.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Shall we go and see?

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Come on.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10- Hi, Noaz, hi, Katima.- Hiya.- Hello.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12I'm so happy you're here

0:03:12 > 0:03:15because today we're going on a spider adventure!

0:03:15 > 0:03:17- Have you ever seen a spider before? - BOTH:- Yeah.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21- Where do you think we might find them?- Over there.- Down there?

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Come on, then. Get your feelers ready.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- ALL:- Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:27 > 0:03:30We're off on a minibeast adventure! Let's go.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Where do spiders live?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40- Um, in...- Spider webs.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41Yeah, spider webs.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44In spider webs?

0:03:44 > 0:03:48- Can you see any spider's webs anywhere?- There.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50- Where?- Right there.

0:03:50 > 0:03:55- Are there any spiders in it? - Um, just take it.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Oh, I can see it, look. Sssh.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02- SHE WHISPERS:- It's right there at the back.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04- It's at the back. Can you see? - I can't see.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09- Did you see it move?- Yeah!- Wow. What do you think she's doing?

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Trying to catch flies.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Find them right over there.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17That's pretty, isn't it?

0:04:17 > 0:04:21I think it looks striped like a tiger.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25- What about that one up there? - Yes!

0:04:25 > 0:04:29- I think it looks like a monster. - Like a monster?

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Yeah, like a monster.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35- There's another one here!- Oh, wow. What's her web like?

0:04:36 > 0:04:41- Like a trampoline.- It does look a bit like a trampoline!

0:04:41 > 0:04:45- Why have they made so many webs? - So they can catch flies.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48So they can catch flies to eat, yeah.

0:04:48 > 0:04:53There are some spiders called wolf spiders that live under logs.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Should we have a look under this log to see if we can find any?

0:04:57 > 0:05:01I'm going to lift this up and I need you to look really carefully

0:05:01 > 0:05:04and tell me if you spot any spiders, OK?

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- Go!- I saw one.- Where?- There.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Wow.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16- What is that white thing? Have you got any idea?- A bum.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18It does look like a bum, doesn't it?

0:05:18 > 0:05:20That's actually her eggs!

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Her baby spiders are going to come out of there.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27- Why is the spider not putting it down?- The eggs?

0:05:27 > 0:05:33- Yeah.- That's so they hatch safely so she protects them until they hatch.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Is that a bag in there?

0:05:35 > 0:05:39We call it an egg sac and it's like a bag full of baby spiders.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43One day the bag opens and there's lots of tiny, tiny,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46little spiders and they run everywhere.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48- and make their own... - Spider webs?

0:05:48 > 0:05:51This type of spider doesn't make a spider web.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55That's why it hides under logs. Let's put her back.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02- ALL:- Bye-bye, spider.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09A spider builds a web in about an hour.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Imagine if you could build a home that quickly.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Wow!

0:06:26 > 0:06:29So now we thought we'd make our own web.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I've started us off here with some bits of the web,

0:06:32 > 0:06:36- but what should we add on next? - I don't know.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- Should we go around here like this?- Yes.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Do you think you can do that, Katima?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Put that through there

0:06:44 > 0:06:45and around like that,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49and then you've got the next bit.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Do you think you can do that here? Go on, here you go.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Brilliant! Pass it to Noaz.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02Katima.

0:07:05 > 0:07:10It's really starting to look like a spider web now, isn't it?

0:07:14 > 0:07:19How long do you think it takes a spider to make a spider web?

0:07:19 > 0:07:24- 30 minutes?- 30 minutes? Some of them probably could do it in 30 minutes.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26They're quite quick at it.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31Katima, where are you going to put it next?

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- OK.- I want to climb on it.- Do you think it would be strong enough?

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- Yes.- Oh, I don't know.

0:07:38 > 0:07:43Spider silk is very, very, very strong, but wool...

0:07:43 > 0:07:45I'm not sure you could climb up wool.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48That's why spiders are so amazing.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- Their webs are so strong they can climb up them.- They're beautiful.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56Oh, spiders are beautiful. What do you think of our spider web?

0:07:56 > 0:07:59- It's very cool. - It is cool, isn't it?

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Wow, we really discovered how difficult it is to make

0:08:07 > 0:08:09a spider's web, didn't we?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Sophie is such a clever minibeast.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Maybe you could have a spider adventure too.

0:08:15 > 0:08:20Have a look for a web and see if you can see a spider hiding nearby.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Feelers out, what's about? Happy hunting, adventurers!
