0:00:37 > 0:00:40# A minibeast adventure... #

0:00:40 > 0:00:42With Jess!

0:00:42 > 0:00:47Welcome to my treehouse! These minibeasts are brilliant hunters.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50They've been around for millions and millions of years.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Since before the dinosaurs. Have a look.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57These are centipedes. There's one!

0:00:57 > 0:01:01It's got lots and lots of legs so it can run really fast.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Let's have a closer look.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Lots of people think centipedes have 100 legs,

0:01:09 > 0:01:13but centipedes in this country usually have about 30.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16With all those legs, you'd think they might trip up.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18But cleverly, each pair of legs

0:01:18 > 0:01:20is a little bit longer than the ones before.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Can you see?

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Probably because they spend so much time in the dark,

0:01:28 > 0:01:31centipedes don't have very good eyesight.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35So they feel their way around using these antennae

0:01:35 > 0:01:37at the front of their bodies.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41They also have two extra-long legs at the back

0:01:41 > 0:01:44that they use for feeling behind.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47And these legs can also help them run backwards.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50When a centipede goes hunting,

0:01:50 > 0:01:55it catches smaller creatures with its two sharp claws at the front.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01I think it's time we went on a hunt for these hunters.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03I'm sure there's one living really near you,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07although you might not have seen it because they sleep in the daytime.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Shall we go and look for a centipede?

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Come on!

0:02:19 > 0:02:23Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure!

0:02:29 > 0:02:32- Hi, Keira. Hi, Evalina. - BOTH: Hi, Jess!

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Thank you for letting me come to your house.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38- Today, we're having a centipede adventure!- Whee!- Yes!

0:02:38 > 0:02:42- Have you ever seen a centipede? - BOTH: Yes.- What are they like?

0:02:42 > 0:02:46They're very tickly when they walk all up your neck and your hand.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49- Hopefully we'll do some of that today.- And he makes me laugh.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- They make me laugh, too. - And me because they tickle me.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54They normally come out at night-time,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57so we're going to have to find them where they're hiding.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59That's likely to be somewhere damp and dark.

0:02:59 > 0:03:05- Is there anywhere like that around here?- A bush and mud!- Brilliant!

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Well, let's go and have a look, then. Get your feelers ready.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:12 > 0:03:15We're off on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Minibeasts love to hide, so I'm going to lift them up

0:03:25 > 0:03:27and I want you to look under and tell me what you can see.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30- OK? Ready?- Yeah.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Action, now!

0:03:34 > 0:03:37- Oh! What's that?- That's a woodlouse!

0:03:37 > 0:03:40That is a woodlouse.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42- It's going to be tickly!- Whee!

0:03:42 > 0:03:43Can I hold it?

0:03:46 > 0:03:51- There we go.- Oh! It's tickly! Ah! Can I have it off now, please?

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- Yeah. Do you want to hold this one?- Yes.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- Now, you need to keep your hands very still.- I held it.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00- It's so tickly.- It's so tickly! There you go.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02I was so happy, wasn't I?

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Ha-ha-ha! It's moving funny!

0:04:09 > 0:04:11It's going around in circles.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13That's what I meant.

0:04:13 > 0:04:19They can curl up in balls and they've got curly lines on them.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Yes. They have got lines on their backs, haven't they?

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Are you going to put it back?

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- That's great. It's back with its friends now.- That's a woodlouse.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33I've seen something under here.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Come on, then, let's lift the next one up.

0:04:36 > 0:04:41- Let's go around there. - Look what I've found!- What?

0:04:41 > 0:04:46This. Look, that looked like a woodlouse or a centipede!

0:04:46 > 0:04:51- Did it? Where?- Look! - Oh, that is a centipede!- Wow!

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Oh, my goodness! Right on top of the rock.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Oh, I've got a pot in my pocket. Be very careful, Keira.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00You've got it! Put it in this pot.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Wow! Well done! - Put the lid on, put the lid on!

0:05:03 > 0:05:05- Centipede!- Would you like to hold it?

0:05:05 > 0:05:08- Yes!- I don't want it.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10- No, just in the pot, like this. - Oh, yeah.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13It's very tickly when you hold it on your hand.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Yeah, they are tickly, aren't they?

0:05:15 > 0:05:19It's silly. It's moving, like, really slow and it's silly. Look.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Can you see? It's moving silly.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25LAUGHTER

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- How many legs do you think it's got? - 100!

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Ah, lots of people do think centipedes have 100 legs,

0:05:31 > 0:05:34but actually, they have much less than that.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38- What's that big long thing? - Which long thing?- That thing.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- These things that look like this? - They're antennae.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Yes, they are, they're antennae!

0:05:44 > 0:05:50BOTH: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.

0:05:50 > 0:05:5217 on that side

0:05:52 > 0:05:56and 17 on the other side,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58so that makes 34 legs!

0:06:00 > 0:06:03As you get older, your legs get longer.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12But as a centipede gets older, it simply grows more legs.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Imagine if that happened to you.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16LAUGHTER

0:06:18 > 0:06:20We know centipedes come out at night,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23so we thought we'd make them a cosy centipede corner

0:06:23 > 0:06:26to hide in during the day.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29Which of these things do you think they'd like in their cosy corner?

0:06:29 > 0:06:31- Er...this!- Yeah, OK.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33So, shall we make it here, under this tree?

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I think that would be a nice place for them to hide.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38You're going to put moss in? That looks great.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40I think they'd love to hide under that.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45- Um...he can go under this stone. - Yeah.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48When they come.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51- Ooo!- This! - Yeah, you can put that in.

0:06:53 > 0:06:59They come here. This can be, er...

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- The step?- Step.- And the bridge.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Yeah, the bridge.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- OK.- What about the grass?- Grass.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10- Yeah, you can put some of that on. - A pillow!

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Oh, that can be a pillow. Excellent! Where do we want to put this?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17That's going to go there.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21- That can be the pillow, actually.- OK.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- Put those here.- Yeah, that's nice!

0:07:26 > 0:07:31And this is going to be the thing that they get up on.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- This can be their door, like that.- OK.- Yeah.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38When they go inside, they can go, doo-doo-doo, doo-doo.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40LAUGHTER

0:07:40 > 0:07:44- What about this? - That can be their radio.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Yeah, the radio!

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Listen to jumpy music.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52What do centipedes listen to? What sort of music?

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- Um...rap music.- Rap music?

0:07:55 > 0:07:58OK, that can be the radio for the centipedes' rap music.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00That looks great!

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I think they're going to love their cosy centipede corner!

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Shall we put a centipede in now? - Yes.- Now.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11- Put him in there! Put him in there because that's really soft.- OK.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16- Come on.- Bye-bye. Bye, centipede.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21So let's leave that alone now and see how many centipedes

0:08:21 > 0:08:23and other minibeasts come and move in.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I loved that minibeast adventure.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31And that amazing palace Evalina and Keira made for their centipedes.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Maybe you could have a centipede adventure, too.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37There's a very good chance there's a centipede living right near you.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42Maybe you could make a cosy centipede home for it to move into.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Happy hunting, adventurers!
