0:00:20 > 0:00:23# Minibeasts are everywhere, look and listen, stop and stare
0:00:23 > 0:00:27# Minibeasts are everywhere, a Minibeast Adventure
0:00:27 > 0:00:30# Feelers out, what's about?
0:00:31 > 0:00:35# Minibeasts are everywhere, look and listen, stop and stare
0:00:35 > 0:00:40# Miniworlds for us to share, a Minibeast Adventure
0:00:40 > 0:00:41# With Jess! #
0:00:47 > 0:00:49INSECT CLICKS
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Listen, can you hear that sound?
0:00:51 > 0:00:54- INSECT CLICKS - There it is.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57That's the sound of today's minibeast.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59There it was again!
0:00:59 > 0:01:02That noise is made by an insect called a water boatman.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05It's a male trying to find a girlfriend.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08I've been catching some here.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Let's take them inside and have a better look.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19Oh, we've got lots of them in here, swimming around.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20Can you swim?
0:01:20 > 0:01:24There are two different types of water boatmen.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27The small ones that swim on their fronts
0:01:27 > 0:01:31and big ones that swim on their backs.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34Why do you think it's called a water boatman?
0:01:34 > 0:01:37Let's have a closer look.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41Well, it clearly lives in water, but have a look at the way it moves.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44It looks a bit like a rowing boat.
0:01:44 > 0:01:47You sit in a rowing boat with your oars out to the side.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49It's like...
0:01:49 > 0:01:51# Row, row, row the boat... #
0:01:51 > 0:01:52Do you know that one?
0:01:52 > 0:01:56Well, a water boatman looks a bit like it's got oars out to the side
0:01:56 > 0:01:58and it's rowing around.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01But it doesn't really have oars.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03Those are actually the water boatman's legs,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06which it uses like paddles to help it swim.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09The water boatman is an insect, so it has six legs.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13There are the two big ones, then another two in front of those
0:02:13 > 0:02:16and then another two tucked up right at the front.
0:02:16 > 0:02:20It uses these ones to scoop up food.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24As well as swimming, the water boatman can fly.
0:02:24 > 0:02:29It is a type of bug, so it has wings tucked under its shell.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34Wow, a minibeast that can swim, walk, dive and fly.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Isn't that incredible?
0:02:36 > 0:02:40Water Boatmen live all over the UK, in ponds and other still water,
0:02:40 > 0:02:43so there should be one living near you.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45Shall we go and find one?
0:02:46 > 0:02:48Come on.
0:02:55 > 0:03:00Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!
0:03:05 > 0:03:07Hi, Charlie. Hi, Bill.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09- BOTH:- Hi, Jess.
0:03:09 > 0:03:14Brilliant to see you. Today, we're going on a water boatmen adventure.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16Do you know what a water boatman is?
0:03:16 > 0:03:18It's something that walks on water.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Oh, so where do you think we might find one?
0:03:21 > 0:03:22In a river.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25In a river, in some water, maybe in pond?
0:03:25 > 0:03:29- Shall we go and look for one? - Yeah.- OK, get your feelers ready.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34ALL: Feelers out, what's about?
0:03:34 > 0:03:37We're off on a Minibeast Adventure! Come on.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43We're looking for water boatmen in some water,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46but where around here would there be water?
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Ah!
0:03:48 > 0:03:51What's this?
0:03:51 > 0:03:55Is this a boat full of water?
0:03:55 > 0:03:58- How are we going to...? - Oh!- Oh, what's that?
0:03:58 > 0:04:01What are they, on the top? Do you know what they are?
0:04:01 > 0:04:03Water boatmen.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06No, they're called pond-skaters.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10Water boatmen, that we're looking for, live under the water.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13So, how are we going to find something
0:04:13 > 0:04:15- that lives under the water?- Nets.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Nets, yeah. Let's see what we can catch.
0:04:18 > 0:04:22Oh, you've got something. Well done, put it in there.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26- It's spiky.- It is spiky. - A water snail.
0:04:26 > 0:04:30Yes, this is a water snail, isn't it cool?
0:04:31 > 0:04:36- Oh, I got something. - You got a pond-skater, well done.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40Shall we try and go a bit deeper and see what else we can get?
0:04:41 > 0:04:46- Oh!- A fish! - Oh, my goodness, a fish. Wow.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49Look at that.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Oh, look at all that weed.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53Oh, we've got one, we've got one!
0:04:53 > 0:04:55That looks like a grasshopper.
0:04:55 > 0:04:59- What sort of movement does it do with its legs?- Chopping.
0:04:59 > 0:05:03- It's like a boat.- It is like a boat, isn't it? Yeah.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06It's like when they row it.
0:05:06 > 0:05:11Exactly right, yes. They look like they're rowing, don't they?
0:05:14 > 0:05:15You've got loads there.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18Well done. Oh, my goodness.
0:05:18 > 0:05:20Oh, what happened there?
0:05:20 > 0:05:24- That was funny, wasn't it?- Fighting! - Do you think they're fighting?
0:05:24 > 0:05:28Did you see what it just did then? Came up to the surface.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31- Why do you think it came up to the surface?- To get air.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Yes, that's exactly right, to get air.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37How long are they going to hold their breath for?
0:05:37 > 0:05:40I think they can stay under there for about 30 seconds,
0:05:40 > 0:05:42maybe a minute.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44And if you look carefully,
0:05:44 > 0:05:47you can see little air bubbles around it, as well.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50Can you see the air bubble on its tummy?
0:05:50 > 0:05:53We've caught lots of different creatures.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56But now we've had a good look at them,
0:05:56 > 0:05:59- what do you think we should do? - BOTH: Put them back.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02Put them back, yes. So, bye, pond-skaters.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Bye, snail.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06Bye, fish and water boatmen.
0:06:09 > 0:06:11We all need to breathe,
0:06:11 > 0:06:15but you can't breathe underwater, can you?
0:06:15 > 0:06:17It's the same for water boatmen.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21So when it goes underwater,
0:06:21 > 0:06:24it cleverly takes a bubble of air with it.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27A bit like a diver.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Even in a small pond like this,
0:06:32 > 0:06:36there are lots of creatures living in and around the water,
0:06:36 > 0:06:39so I thought we could have a little game of Pond I-Spy,
0:06:39 > 0:06:41to see what we can spot.
0:06:41 > 0:06:46- In the pond?- Oh, yes, it's going to be in the pond.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49I thought you could play along at home, too.
0:06:49 > 0:06:54I spy with my little eye...
0:06:54 > 0:06:58something beginning with "S".
0:07:00 > 0:07:02Ice skates.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06Oh, a skater, that would have been a good one.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08It's IN the water...
0:07:08 > 0:07:10- A squirrel!- A squirrel?
0:07:10 > 0:07:13But that's not in the pond, is it?
0:07:13 > 0:07:16What else did we catch that begins with a "S"?
0:07:16 > 0:07:20- Water snail.- Yes, water snail!
0:07:20 > 0:07:24Well done, Charlie. Snail.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29What else is living around this pond?
0:07:29 > 0:07:34I spy with my little eye something beginning with "F".
0:07:36 > 0:07:38Can you see anything, Bill?
0:07:41 > 0:07:44- Frog.- Frog! It's very still, isn't it?
0:07:44 > 0:07:46A very still frog.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51Looking at an animal that it can eat.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55Looking for an animal that it can eat? What do frogs eat?
0:07:55 > 0:07:56Flies.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59Yeah, they do eat flies.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02I spy with my little eye
0:08:02 > 0:08:07something beginning with "W".
0:08:07 > 0:08:09Water boat...
0:08:09 > 0:08:12Water boatman, well done, Bill.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14Yes, that's right.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18There are so many minibeasts living in and around the water.
0:08:18 > 0:08:22Maybe you could go on a water boatmen adventure, too.
0:08:22 > 0:08:23Because they live in the water,
0:08:23 > 0:08:27you'd need to take a grown-up adventurer with you.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29And if you take anything out of the water,
0:08:29 > 0:08:32always put it back again at the end.
0:08:32 > 0:08:33Off you go.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38Feelers out, what's about?
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Happy hunting, adventurers!
