0:00:42 > 0:00:44Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47You've probably seen this minibeast before.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49It's one of our best-known beetles

0:00:49 > 0:00:52and is usually red with black spots.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Yes, it's a ladybird! I've got quite a few in here.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Let's take a closer look.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Here's one. How many black spots can you count?

0:01:03 > 0:01:05One, two!

0:01:07 > 0:01:11But ladybirds can have up to 20 spots!

0:01:13 > 0:01:17They may have different numbers of spots,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20but ladybirds always have six legs.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Underneath the shell, they have wings.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Ladybirds can fly as well as crawl.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Oops, off it goes! Beautiful, aren't they?

0:01:30 > 0:01:33But that bright red colour also means,

0:01:33 > 0:01:37"Danger! Don't eat me, I taste horrible!"

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Now, there's sure to be a ladybird living near you.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Shall we go and find one?

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Come on!

0:01:54 > 0:01:59Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Hi, Kit! Hi, Brodie!

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- BOTH: Hi, Jess! - I'm so glad you're here

0:02:09 > 0:02:12because today we're going on a ladybird adventure!

0:02:12 > 0:02:17- Have you seen a ladybird before? - Yeah.- What are they like?

0:02:17 > 0:02:20They have a red body with black legs

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- and a red head and black spots.- Yes.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28Great! Where do you think we might find some of those?

0:02:28 > 0:02:32- Under logs and under woodchips and in grass.- Excellent!

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Let's go and have a look, then! Get your feelers ready.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39ALL: Feelers out, what's about?

0:02:39 > 0:02:42We're off on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:50 > 0:02:53(I've found something.)

0:02:53 > 0:02:56What have you...? Oh, wow, what's that?

0:02:56 > 0:03:00- It's black.- It's black.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- Not really sure. - I don't know what it is.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06It looks like it's some kind of beetley thing.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10It does look like a ladybird but it isn't moving.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14It looks like it has armoured little things there.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16It does look like armour, doesn't it?

0:03:16 > 0:03:20It is a ladybird cocoon and there's a ladybird in there.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25Well, if you have a look at this end, there's a little hole there.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Yeah, I can see it. - That's where the ladybird came out,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31so this is an empty ladybird cocoon!

0:03:31 > 0:03:34It looks like you can play noughts and crosses on it.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37It does look a bit like a noughts-and-crosses board!

0:03:37 > 0:03:39That's so cool!

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Shall we see if we can find some grown-up ladybirds now?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Come on, then.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47- Do you think any ladybirds live in this tree?- Yeah.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49- No, I don't.- I think...

0:03:49 > 0:03:53- I've found a bug! - What have you found?

0:03:53 > 0:03:56I've found a kind of bee thing.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00Oh, my goodness, boys! You've found something amazing!

0:04:00 > 0:04:04- Does this look anything like that cocoon we found?- Yes.- No.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07One of you thinks yes and one of you thinks no.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Well, what would you think

0:04:09 > 0:04:13if I told you that this was what it was before it became that cocoon?

0:04:13 > 0:04:16So it's a ladybird but it doesn't have spots?

0:04:16 > 0:04:20- Yes, this is a baby ladybird. - It looks like a caterpillar.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Well, it is the equivalent of a caterpillar

0:04:23 > 0:04:27for a ladybird, isn't it? And it's the same sort of colours,

0:04:27 > 0:04:32but instead of being red with black spots, it's black with red stripes.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33That tickles.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37- It does look a little bit magic. - It looks a little bit magic?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41It is a little bit magical that that goes into a cocoon

0:04:41 > 0:04:45and turns into a beautiful ladybird, isn't it?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- Does it tickle?- Yeah.- I think you should put it back on a leaf.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51I think we should put it back because it needs to

0:04:51 > 0:04:56make its cocoon and turn into a grown-up ladybird, doesn't it?

0:04:56 > 0:05:00So now we've seen a cocoon, we've seen a baby,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- what else do we need to see? - Big ones.- Big ones!

0:05:03 > 0:05:08- So where do you think we should find some big ones?- There?

0:05:08 > 0:05:10In there?

0:05:11 > 0:05:13I've found a ladybird.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- I've found one.- Oh, wow!- Yeah.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Oh, my goodness, it's a grown-up one, isn't it?

0:05:21 > 0:05:25Shall we put it in a box so we can see it more clearly?

0:05:25 > 0:05:27- Wow, isn't that pretty? - It has orange spots.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31- Shall we find more? - It does have orange spots.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34We thought it was going to be red with black spots.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38- Why have we found a black one with red spots?- I don't know!

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- Are there lots of different colour ladybirds?- BOTH: Yes!

0:05:41 > 0:05:46- What other colours can you get?- You can get yellow ones with black spots.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50- And blue ones.- Blue ones?! - Yeah, blue ones with orange spots.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54- Wow, so they come in lots of different colours.- Yeah.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Though I'm not so sure about blue!

0:05:56 > 0:06:00And I see it's got a little pattern on the bottom.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Oh, yes, it is stripy, isn't it?

0:06:04 > 0:06:07And the cocoon was a bit stripy, wasn't it?

0:06:07 > 0:06:08And the baby was a bit stripy.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12So maybe that's one thing that's the same about the baby,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15the cocoon and the ladybird.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17How many times can you flap your arms

0:06:17 > 0:06:21in the time it takes to say "ladybird?"

0:06:21 > 0:06:22Three perhaps?

0:06:24 > 0:06:25Ladybird!

0:06:26 > 0:06:31In that time, a flying ladybird has flapped its wings 90 times.

0:06:31 > 0:06:3390! Wow!

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Ladybirds love sunny days.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42But what happens to ladybirds when it's cold?

0:06:42 > 0:06:48- They, um, go in a house. - Yes, they find warm places to hide.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52Sometimes they snuggle up with lots of other ladybirds,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56and if you're lucky, you could find them hiding indoors somewhere.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00But if they're outdoors, they need somewhere warm to hide.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03So we thought we'd make some ladybird houses

0:07:03 > 0:07:05for them to hide in in the winter.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07So, Kit and Brodie each have a flowerpot,

0:07:07 > 0:07:11and that's where they're going to make their ladybird house.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14And we're going to fill those with bamboo.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20What do you think these bamboo sticks would be good for?

0:07:20 > 0:07:24They can go through these holes and get out the other side.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Yeah, so they could hide in the middle, can't they?

0:07:27 > 0:07:32- What do you think this straw is for? - Erm, locking the door.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36And holding the sticks together so they'll be nice and cosy.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Yes, exactly! We're going to put it around the edge so it holds

0:07:40 > 0:07:44all of the sticks together and keeps them nice and cosy and warm.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48- Excellent! Can you do that, then? - And they have a soft, erm, floor.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00That looks like a good ladybird house, doesn't it?

0:08:00 > 0:08:03So inside those bamboo sticks they'll be safe and warm.

0:08:03 > 0:08:08- Isn't that brilliant? Great! Do you think it's ready?- BOTH: Yeah.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Do you think the ladybirds are going to like their houses?

0:08:11 > 0:08:14I think they look fantastic.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18I loved that Minibeast Adventure.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Wasn't it brilliant that Kit and Brodie managed

0:08:21 > 0:08:23to find some baby ladybirds?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26You could go on a ladybird adventure too.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Find a sunny spot and look amongst the leaves.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30But if you do find anything,

0:08:30 > 0:08:33most importantly, remember to put it back.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38Feelers out, what's about? Happy hunting, adventurers!
