0:00:42 > 0:00:47Welcome to my tree house. Today, we're having a snail adventure.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Snails are one of the easiest minibeasts to spot.

0:00:50 > 0:00:55You can find them almost everywhere, especially when it's been raining.

0:00:55 > 0:00:56And they're quite big...

0:00:56 > 0:00:58for a minibeast.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Have a look at these.

0:01:00 > 0:01:05Snails have soft, slimy bodies which are protected by a shell.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09The snail's body is actually one big foot

0:01:09 > 0:01:13and it moves along by rippling its muscles.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18It makes a slimy track to slide along.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25If a snail wants to hide away,

0:01:25 > 0:01:29it can tuck its whole body into its shell.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32A snail has four tentacles.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Can you see them popping out?

0:01:34 > 0:01:38The short two are for feeling, tasting and smelling.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42The longer two have eyes on the end of them.

0:01:42 > 0:01:47But snails actually can't see very well, they just see light and dark.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52The shell is really clever.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55As the snail grows, the shell grows, too.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59So when a baby snail hatches, it has a tiny little shell.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04Look, this baby is a teeny tiny version of an adult snail.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Its shell is very soft and fragile when it's small,

0:02:07 > 0:02:11so you have to be really careful if you pick them up.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14It takes about two years for a snail to grow to be an adult.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I'm sure you've got a snail living near you.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Maybe it's a baby, maybe it's an adult.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Shall we go and see?

0:02:23 > 0:02:24Come on.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:42 > 0:02:45- Hi, Amelia. Hi, Leah. - Hi, Jess.- Hi, Jess.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49Thank you so much for letting me come to your house today,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55What are snails like?

0:02:55 > 0:02:59They have slime behind them and they've got shells.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03- They have got shells, yes.- In case they get scared.- Yes, to hide in.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Brilliant.- And they've got mummies.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- Be very careful. - I will be very careful.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33We have to be very careful when we're looking for minibeasts.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37- I can see one right there. - Can you? Where?- In there.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I think he's sleeping in his shell.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Oh, shall we have a look?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44- Let's hold him.- Can you get it?

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Oh, it's an empty shell.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- I think he's moved out. - He's moved out? Oh.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55And he's finding another shell.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59- Shall we see if we can find any snails that are at home?- Yeah.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03- Let's keep looking, then. - I'm going to have a look here.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07- Here. There's one right there. - Oh, look at this one, Leah.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11- It's climbing up the wall. - Yeah, look, Leah. Oh, my goodness.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15- Oh, that's a...- Don't touch it.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Oh, look at the eyes coming out.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23- He's scared.- Oh, he's scared?

0:04:23 > 0:04:25What does he do when he's scared?

0:04:25 > 0:04:27He hides like this.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Yes, he does.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33- Is it tickly?- Oh!

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- Can I get another one?- OK, yeah.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40It's there. It's right in there.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Oh, my goodness, there's two. Oh, look how many are in there.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Their mum's on there.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50It's the snail family.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53The snail family!

0:04:53 > 0:04:55- How many are there?- Let it get down.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59We haven't even seen them there.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Look at this one, this is a little one.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07He's a bubbly one and he's a little baby one.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08That is a baby one.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12How do you think that little baby one gets to this big?

0:05:12 > 0:05:18- He gets on this.- I think he's going to eat the lettuce.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Lettuce? They do eat lettuce, yes.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25- Eat lettuce. - Come on, eat your lettuce.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27He says, "Hello, Daddy."

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Oh, do you think that's its daddy?

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- They're really nice. - They are really nice, aren't they?

0:05:33 > 0:05:36They're going to stay in our garden.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Snails' shells are their homes

0:05:40 > 0:05:43and they always carry them around on their backs.

0:05:46 > 0:05:51Imagine if you carried your home around with you all the time. Phew!

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Phew!

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Shall I tell you a really cool snail fact?

0:06:00 > 0:06:05Snails have thousands of teeth.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09So I thought we could feed some snails today

0:06:09 > 0:06:12and then we might get a chance to see their mouths

0:06:12 > 0:06:14and maybe even their teeth.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16- Would you like to help me do that? - Yeah.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20What we have here is some snail soup.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22- Ew.- Ew!

0:06:22 > 0:06:25It's not made of snails though, it's what snails eat.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29- It's lettuce all mushed up with water.- Can I have these?

0:06:29 > 0:06:30You do need that, yes,

0:06:30 > 0:06:33because you're going to paint some of this soup

0:06:33 > 0:06:35onto the side of this tank here,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38and then the snails are going to climb up.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42And when we look through, we should be able to see them eating.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45If they like it lots, we'll see lots of teeth.

0:06:45 > 0:06:46Are they going to like it?

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- Like this?- Yeah.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52I hope they're going to like it, I think they are. That looks perfect.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Shall we put some snails in now?

0:06:55 > 0:06:58So here's one for Amelia,

0:06:58 > 0:07:03- here's one for Leah... - That one's not coming out.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06..and here's one for Jess.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12- Is my one coming out?- And yours.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19- There's his... That's his mouth. - That is his mouth.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Look at that, what does it look like?

0:07:21 > 0:07:24I think that's its teeth, the black bits.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Yeah, I think it is, but they're quite difficult to see.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30What's yours doing, Amelia?

0:07:30 > 0:07:33He's going really slow, he's not that fast.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Yours is really fast.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Mine's eating it all, look at that. Gulp, gulp.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- Let's see if they go right to the top.- OK.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Oh, yours is eating now, Leah.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Mine's going to get fat, my one.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52He's got enough from down there.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54Do you think they like the snail soup?

0:07:54 > 0:07:57They want more.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00They've eaten lots and lots, haven't they?

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Gulp, gulp.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Wasn't it amazing to see those snails eating?

0:08:11 > 0:08:13I loved seeing their mouths.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Maybe you could go on a snail adventure, too.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Look for them in cool, damp places.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21You can even have a go at feeding them yourself.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25But if you do, remember, always put them back at the end.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Happy hunting, adventurers!
