0:00:40 > 0:00:42With Jess!

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Welcome to my tree house.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48Today, we're having a beetle adventure.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Beetles are incredible!

0:00:50 > 0:00:52There are thousands of different types of beetle

0:00:52 > 0:00:55and they live all over the world.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00In fact, one quarter of all the animals on Earth are beetles.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04That means that when you think of all the creatures on Earth,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07one in every four of them is a beetle!

0:01:07 > 0:01:09isn't that amazing?

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Let's have a look at some of them.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Beetles have a hard shell like armour.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20And as they are insects, they have six legs.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26They have antennae, which they use to smell the world around them.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28And they're not all black,

0:01:28 > 0:01:31beetles come in many colours... and shapes!

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Under its shiny shell it has wings

0:01:36 > 0:01:39which it keeps tucked away until it wants to fly.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Have you ever seen a ladybird flying about?

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Well, ladybirds are beetles too.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Some types of beetle prefer to stay on the ground,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52even though they have wings they don't like to fly at all.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57They like to live amongst dead leaves and in dark, damp places.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Well, if one out of every four animals is a beetle,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03then there must be one living near you.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Shall we go and find one?

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Come on!

0:02:15 > 0:02:19Whatever the weather, we're off together on a Minibeast Adventure!

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- Hi, Jess.- Hi, Jess. - Hi, Teddy. Hi, Josh.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I'm so glad you're here,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33because today we're off on a beetle adventure.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- BOTH:- Yay!

0:02:35 > 0:02:38- Have you seen a beetle before?- I have.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Where do you think we might find some?

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- On the ground.- In the trees. - In the trees, on the ground.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Let's go, then. Get your feelers ready.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49ALL: # Feelers out What's about?

0:02:49 > 0:02:53# We're off on a Minibeast Adventure! #

0:02:53 > 0:02:56ALL: Yeah!

0:02:56 > 0:02:57JESS LAUGHS

0:03:03 > 0:03:07This looks like a great place to look for beetles, doesn't it?

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Can you have a look underneath if I lift these up?

0:03:10 > 0:03:13- Yeah.- Oh, look, I found one! - What's that?

0:03:13 > 0:03:16- A spider.- It's like a spider.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18- Whoa!- It isn't a spider actually,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- it's called a harvestman. - Harvestman?

0:03:21 > 0:03:25- Whoa! Shall we keep looking for beetles?- Yeah.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28So let's put him back and see if we can find one.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Ohh, there's a spider web under there.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35- Look.- This one?- Yeah.- OK.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39- Oh, look!- Got it!

0:03:39 > 0:03:43- Wow! Look at that.- It's not moving.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Oh! It is now. Oh, it's so fast!

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Wow! What does that look like?

0:03:48 > 0:03:54- A centipede?- It's got a lot less legs than a centipede, hasn't it?

0:03:54 > 0:03:58- Ants.- It looks like a really big ant, you're right.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- Josh?- Yeah.- You see this kit bag on my back?

0:04:01 > 0:04:06- Can you get something out of that pocket?- I'll get it. What, here? Oh!

0:04:06 > 0:04:10You've got a magnifying glass, you can look at it carefully with that.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13- I can see it.- If we put the beetle in there...

0:04:13 > 0:04:16- we can look at it really well. - I can open it.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19And...in it goes!

0:04:19 > 0:04:23- Yes!- Yes!- Wow!- We got it, Josh!

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Isn't that cool?

0:04:25 > 0:04:29One, two, three, four, five, six.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Six legs like all insects.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34He's got some spikes on his legs.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38There's a really cool thing they do with the hairs on their legs,

0:04:38 > 0:04:42they can feel the sensations of where other animals are.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Do the hairs on your legs tell you that?

0:04:44 > 0:04:48No. What do you think it's got under this shell here?

0:04:48 > 0:04:52- Er...wings.- Wings! Beetles do have wings under their shells.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56- They're his bones.- His bones?- Yeah.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58You're right, they are his bones.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02- We have our skeletons inside our bodies.- But you can't see 'em.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06You can't see them. Can you see this beetle's skeleton?

0:05:06 > 0:05:08- Yeah.- Where's its skeleton?

0:05:08 > 0:05:12- Inside its body.- No!- Outside.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16Josh is completely right! Beetles' skeletons are outside their bodies.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20That black thing on the edge that's all his skeleton.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23- Isn't that weird?- Yeah.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27How sharp are your teeth?

0:05:27 > 0:05:31You can use them to take a big bite out of an apple.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37But a beetle's teeth are so sharp, it can bite right through wood!

0:05:39 > 0:05:42WOOD CREAKS LAUGHTER

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Minibeasts are everywhere all the time.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49But sometimes it can be really hard to see them.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52One of the best ways that you can find them

0:05:52 > 0:05:55is by making a tumble trap for them to tumble into.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57We're making one here. I've dug a hole

0:05:57 > 0:06:01for Teddy to put this clean yoghurt pot into.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Can you put that in for me, Teddy?

0:06:05 > 0:06:06Perfect!

0:06:06 > 0:06:11So the insects can walk along here and tumble into the trap.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Now, we don't want them to spot it straightaway

0:06:14 > 0:06:17and if the rain comes down, we don't want the insects to die.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21So, Josh, you're going to put a stone on the top, aren't you?

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Perfect! Just with a little bit of hole,

0:06:25 > 0:06:29so there's enough space for them to crawl underneath.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I made a tumble trap this morning. Shall we see what's in it?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35- BOTH:- Yeah. - Come on, then. Over there.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Here it is.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43- Shall we see what we've got? - BOTH:- Yeah.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46This is the stone that they climb underneath.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48What have we got in this pot?

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Let's put it in this tray and see what we've got.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53- Have we got any beetles?- Yeah.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- SHE GASPS - Look! that's amazing!

0:06:56 > 0:06:59- That's a massive one! - This is called a...- Rhino.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Oh, you are very close.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05It is very closely related to a rhinoceros beetle,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08in fact, it's in the same family

0:07:08 > 0:07:11but this one is called a lesser stag beetle.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- I was close.- You were really close!

0:07:14 > 0:07:18- What about the big one? - This one?- Yeah.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21This one is a rove beetle, and they're really, really fast.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24They have this trick that they do when they're scared,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27they put up their back like a scorpion.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- I can catch it.- What about if you put your hand next to mine?

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- I nearly lost it. - JOSH LAUGHS

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- There you go.- Hurray!

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- Whoa! - SHE LAUGHS

0:07:40 > 0:07:43What's this one in such a rush to get to?

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- Home?- Home!- Home, sweet home.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- Oh, it's going up your sleeve! - ALL LAUGH

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Why did he go up your sleeve? That was silly!

0:07:53 > 0:07:56But they like dark places cos they live under stones.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00- They were living in that dark trap. - He likes Josh's hair.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- He does like Josh's hair. - TEDDY LAUGHS

0:08:03 > 0:08:06When we make a tumble trap, we only leave it for a few hours,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09so the insects fall in, we have a look at them

0:08:09 > 0:08:12and then put them back with their friends.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Look!

0:08:19 > 0:08:21I loved that Minibeast Adventure.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23We found lots of things in our trap.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Maybe you could go on a beetle adventure.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28There's a chance one's living near you.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31You could even make your own tumble trap.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34If you do, you must remember to take it away afterwards,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36so nothing gets stuck in it.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38# Feelers out! What's about? #

0:08:38 > 0:08:40Happy hunting, adventurers!
