0:00:33 > 0:00:36# Look and listen, stop and stare

0:00:36 > 0:00:37# Mini worlds for us to share

0:00:37 > 0:00:40# A Minibeast Adventure. #

0:00:40 > 0:00:42With Jess!

0:00:46 > 0:00:50I've just spotted some of the most magical minibeasts here by the pond.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52They're dragonflies.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56They are flying around the reeds, looking for insects to eat.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00There're quite fast so they can be quite difficult to spot.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01(Look! There's one.)

0:01:01 > 0:01:06Look at its skinny, blue body and shiny wings.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08They're fantastic flyers.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Think about a creature like a bee,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12its wings move up and down like this.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16But a dragonfly can move each of its four wings separately,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19which makes it brilliant at manoeuvring.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22They can fly up and down, side to side,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24backwards and forwards and hover.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27That makes them brilliant at hunting cos they can catch

0:01:27 > 0:01:30other insects as they're flying through the air.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Something else that makes them good at hunting -

0:01:33 > 0:01:37their huge eyes, which take up most of their heads!

0:01:37 > 0:01:40They look pretty strange, don't they?

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Dragonflies spend most of their lives around water.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49In fact, dragonflies spend most of their lives IN water,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53because baby dragonflies are underwater creatures called nymphs.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56So a bit like caterpillars turn into butterflies,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00dragonfly nymphs turn into dragonflies!

0:02:00 > 0:02:04I've got one in my tree house to show you. Come and have a look.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09The dragonfly spends most of its life as a nymph,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12but finally crawls out of the water

0:02:12 > 0:02:14and turns into a dragonfly.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17They're pretty amazing.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Here's a dragonfly nymph.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Doesn't look much like a dragonfly yet, does it?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25It's a very fierce little creature that

0:02:25 > 0:02:28lives at the bottom of the pond eating insects and small fish.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32If you have water near where you live, then you might be

0:02:32 > 0:02:35lucky enough to find a dragonfly. Shall we give it a try?

0:02:37 > 0:02:38Come on!

0:02:46 > 0:02:51Whatever the weather, we're off together on a minibeast adventure.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Hi, Morgan. Hi, Eva.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00BOTH: Hi, Jess.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Fantastic to see you.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Today, we're going on a dragonfly adventure.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Yeah!

0:03:08 > 0:03:11- Have you seen a dragonfly before? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12What are they like?

0:03:12 > 0:03:16They've got like wings and they're like a caterpillar shape.

0:03:16 > 0:03:21Caterpillar shape? Oh, well, they do have quite a caterpillar shape.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Well, we're very lucky today because dragonflies like the sun

0:03:24 > 0:03:26and it's a lovely day today!

0:03:26 > 0:03:29So I think we might find some.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- Have you got your feelers ready? - Yes!

0:03:31 > 0:03:34BOTH: Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:34 > 0:03:37That's right! Feelers out, what's about?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40ALL: We're off on a minibeast adventure!

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Dragonflies, when they're babies, live in ponds

0:03:51 > 0:03:54and they're called dragonfly nymphs.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56We're having a look in this pond

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and doing some pond dipping to see if we can find any.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02I'll fill this with some water so if we catch anything,

0:04:02 > 0:04:06it's got water to swim around in. So take your nets and put them in,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08and see what you can find.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Oh, that's a good one. Turn that in here.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Eva, can you see what we've got?

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- Look, I catch that!- Wow, what is it?

0:04:18 > 0:04:19- So fast!- Really fast.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22That's called a water boatman.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25You see how it's swimming like it's got oars?

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- And look, there's a spider one. - Oh, this one here?- Yeah.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32Actually, that isn't a spider. Let's have a look at it,

0:04:32 > 0:04:34- a bit more closely. - It's a swim spider.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36What do you think it is, Eva?

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- It's a baby dragonfly. - That's right, Eva.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42How do they live underwater then?

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Good question. How do they live underwater?

0:04:44 > 0:04:49They might have... And the other ones might have the wings to flap

0:04:49 > 0:04:52and they might sit down and then might still do it

0:04:52 > 0:04:56and they might lay their eggs and then they can swim.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58That's exactly what happens!

0:04:58 > 0:05:01The mummy dragonfly comes down and lands on something like this

0:05:01 > 0:05:03and lays her eggs and then,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06the babies are in the water and they can swim.

0:05:06 > 0:05:11And to turn into a dragonfly, it climbs up a stalk like this

0:05:11 > 0:05:14and stops and makes itself a sleeping bag, and goes to sleep.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18And when it wakes up, it's got wings and it can fly

0:05:18 > 0:05:19and it's a dragonfly!

0:05:19 > 0:05:22So it's while sleeping they turn into dragonflies?

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Yes, while it's sleeping, it turns into a dragonfly.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28And it feels like, what's on my back?

0:05:28 > 0:05:30He looks over and he says, "Oh, wings."

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Wings.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35The babies can swim and the adults can fly.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37How weird is that?!

0:05:37 > 0:05:40- Really weird.- We should put him back?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42- I think we should put him back. - BOTH: Yeah.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Yeah, we must always put the creatures back after we find them.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- Bye.- Bye.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50There's one, there.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55- Did you see it swimming away? - Yeah. It was going like...

0:05:56 > 0:06:00What part of your body do you breathe through?

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Yes, it's your nose and mouth.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07But a dragonfly nymph breathes through

0:06:07 > 0:06:10a different part of its body -

0:06:10 > 0:06:13it breathes through its bottom.

0:06:13 > 0:06:14Ha-ha.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Let's sit here away from the edge.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23Dragonflies love water,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26so this should be a great place to spot them.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31- Would you like to look with binoculars?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Here you go.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35- Thank you.- You're welcome.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37I can see...

0:06:37 > 0:06:38a butterfly.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Oh, there's a beautiful white butterfly over there.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45I can see other... Oh, other, other, other!

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Oh, my goodness! That one's enormous.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50It looks a bit grey-blueish.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- It was quite blue. - Look, there's a baby one.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Oh, it does look like a baby dragonfly, doesn't it?

0:06:56 > 0:06:59That one isn't actually a dragonfly. It's a damselfly.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Have you ever heard of a damselfly before?- No.- No.

0:07:02 > 0:07:07Damselflies are very similar to dragonflies, but they're smaller

0:07:07 > 0:07:10and do different things with their wings. Can you see what

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- it does when it lands? - It holds its wings like this...

0:07:14 > 0:07:15Like this, yeah.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19And did you notice earlier what that big one did when he landed on it?

0:07:19 > 0:07:20Yeah.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Oh, like that!

0:07:22 > 0:07:26So that is the difference between damselflies and dragonflies.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27Wow!

0:07:27 > 0:07:31But are damselflies so straight like that? Like a little stick?

0:07:31 > 0:07:36Like a stick, yeah. What are dragonflies' bodies like?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38They're like colours.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Like painting colours on them over there. And there's a brown one.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43Can you see it?

0:07:43 > 0:07:46They got two wings on that side, two wings on that side.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Yeah, they have two wings on each side.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- There's one there!- Oh, wow. Look, what's it doing with its wings?

0:07:53 > 0:07:56- It's going ble-ble-ble. - Ha-ha, did you see?

0:07:56 > 0:07:59They were all going in different directions. Did you see it

0:07:59 > 0:08:04- go backwards?- Yeah.- I think they've got eyes because they're things.

0:08:04 > 0:08:09They have! Their eyes are so big that they start here

0:08:09 > 0:08:11and go all the way to here.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16- They can see backwards? - They can say everywhere.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19- Can you imagine if you could see in all directions?- Yeah.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21- Would that be cool? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30That was a great minibeast adventure.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35We were so lucky to find dragonflies and dragonfly nymphs too.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Maybe you could go on a dragonfly adventure.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40It's a very special adventure,

0:08:40 > 0:08:43because they are so difficult to spot.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44And as they live near water,

0:08:44 > 0:08:48you'll need to take a grown-up adventurer with you too.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Feelers out, what's about?

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Happy hunting, adventurers!
