0:00:40 > 0:00:41With Jess.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48I've just spotted something on the water.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Come and look at this.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Look, can you see it?

0:00:52 > 0:00:54There, balancing on top of the water.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It's a pond skater.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59You can see why it's called that, can't you?

0:00:59 > 0:01:01It looks like it's skating on top of the pond.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05If we tried to walk on water we'd just sink

0:01:05 > 0:01:07but pond skaters can walk along the top.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09It's hunting for food.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13Pond skaters wait for little insects to fall into the water

0:01:13 > 0:01:16and then use their big long legs to feel the ripples,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19a bit like a spider feeling vibrations in her web.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24Then it rushes over, grabs the insect and eats it.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Pond skaters can go really fast, a metre a second.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31That's this far... Pow! ..in a second!

0:01:31 > 0:01:32How cool is that?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35I think I'd like to have a closer look.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Let's see what we have here.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50Pond skaters are insects, so they have six legs.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52There are four long, bendy ones,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55which they use to walk along on the water,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and two shorter ones at the front,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02which they use to catch small insects for their lunch.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06As well as walking on water, pond skaters can also fly

0:02:06 > 0:02:11and they have wings tucked away on their backs.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Pond skaters live all over the UK on ponds and other watery places,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18so there's probably one living near you.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Shall we go and find one?

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Come on!

0:02:29 > 0:02:34Whatever the weather, we're off together on a mini beast adventure!

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- Hi, Brandon. Hi, Zion. - BOTH: Hi, Jess.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I'm so glad you're here,

0:02:44 > 0:02:48because today we're going on a pond skater adventure.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- Do you know what a pond skater is? - Yes.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Yes? Where can you find one?

0:02:52 > 0:02:54In the pond.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56In the pond, yes.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58- Shall we go and look for a pond? - Yes.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Great! Get your feelers ready.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05ALL: Feelers out. What's about?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07We're off on a mini beast adventure.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Down there - come on!

0:03:11 > 0:03:14This is a lovely pond, isn't it?

0:03:14 > 0:03:16What sort of things do you think live here?

0:03:16 > 0:03:18One of them.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20That's a pond skater.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Would you like to have a closer look at it?

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- Does it have wings? - Yes, those are wings on its back.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28We need a thing so...

0:03:28 > 0:03:31It can't escape.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Yeah. Shall we put some water in here first?

0:03:36 > 0:03:37Got some water.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40There we go. How could we get the pond skater out of the pond?

0:03:40 > 0:03:43- I've found one! - Yeah, there's one!

0:03:43 > 0:03:45How can we get it out of the pond?

0:03:45 > 0:03:47What about a net?

0:03:47 > 0:03:50A net, yeah. I can see one!

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Oh, they're so fast, aren't they?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58There's one. Look, can you see it?

0:03:58 > 0:04:00- Yeah. - Right in front of the net.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02- Yes! Got it! - Put it in there.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Oh, jumped out!

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Oh, did you see how well it jumped?

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Look at that!

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Don't escape.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17He don't know where he is. He can't get out.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19No, it can't get out, can it?

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Is it a spider?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23It does look a bit like a spider, doesn't it?

0:04:23 > 0:04:26How many legs does a spider have?

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Five? Ten?

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Eight, yes! Spiders have eight legs.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And how many legs does this little creature have?

0:04:35 > 0:04:38- Six. - Six, yes. This is an insect.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Shall we see if we can catch some more?

0:04:41 > 0:04:42- Yeah.- Come on, then.

0:04:42 > 0:04:43He missed.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47I can see one.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51There's one over there.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Yes! We've got two now.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Isn't that clever, how they walk on top of the water?

0:05:00 > 0:05:01Can you do that?

0:05:01 > 0:05:04- No. - What happens if you stand on water?

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- I would fall. - You'd fall down, wouldn't you?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11You'd go underneath the water, but they always stay on top.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15It's eating the grass.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18It does look like they're eating it, doesn't it?

0:05:18 > 0:05:21But I think actually, they're just holding on to it.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Because can you see, under its face,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27it has the thing that looks like this?

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Where's that one gone? It's eating it.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Oh, is it eating that little bug?

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Can you do what the pond skater's doing?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Do you think that would be yummy?

0:05:40 > 0:05:43No. We don't eat grass.

0:05:43 > 0:05:49When you eat your lunch, you cut it up and then you chew it.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52But a pond skater has a sharp pointed beak

0:05:52 > 0:05:56which he uses to stab its lunch and then suck it up.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Slurrrrp!

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Mmm, greenfly smoothie!

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Ponds have all kinds of creatures living in them.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13We've already seen that pond skaters live on the surface.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Shall we look and see what we can see under the surface?

0:06:16 > 0:06:17- BOTH: Yes.- Yeah.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Here's a net for you, Zion.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22And for you, Brandon.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Now, we need to be very, very careful.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27I don't want you leaning too far over, OK?

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Do you want to see what you can get? - Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32- Zion, are you ready? - Whoa!

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Has anyone got anything?

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Shall we put our nets in here and see what we've got?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- What's that? - An umbrella.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42- An umbrella? - No, it's a worm.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45It does look like a worm. It's called a leech.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Look how fast it can move. Wow!

0:06:48 > 0:06:51He's hiding from us.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Whoa! I can see a spider there!

0:06:53 > 0:06:56If you ever see something that looks like that

0:06:56 > 0:06:59but lives under stones instead of living in a pond,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01that's called a woodlouse.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- And this one? - Waterlouse?

0:07:04 > 0:07:06A waterlouse, yeah, well done.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09So, this is a waterlouse.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I've got something! I've got something!

0:07:12 > 0:07:14It's a frog.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16It turns into a frog sometimes.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- Do you know what it's called? - Little...

0:07:19 > 0:07:21A ta...

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- A tiny frog. - A tiny frog!

0:07:23 > 0:07:28Yes, it is a tiny frog, and we also call them tadpoles.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31- Then they turn to frogs. - I know tadpoles.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33- Did you know that word? - Yeah.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35And then they turn to frogs.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38It doesn't look much like a frog at the moment, though.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- What does it look like? - A snail.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42A snail?

0:07:42 > 0:07:46- Some tadpoles have legs. - That's right.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- No! - No, that IS right.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52So, tadpoles start looking like that, like a blob with a tail,

0:07:52 > 0:07:56and then they grow some legs, and then they lose their tail,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58and then they become a frog.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Isn't that amazing, that we found one of those?

0:08:03 > 0:08:05I loved that mini beast adventure.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09There are so many things living in and around the pond.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Maybe you could go on a pond skater adventure, too.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16They live in water, so you'll have to bring a grown-up adventurer.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19But if you get the opportunity to go pond dipping,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21or even have a close look in a pond,

0:08:21 > 0:08:25you'll be amazed at all the things you can find.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29Feelers out. What's about? Happy hunting, adventurers.
