0:03:58 > 0:04:02The tiddlers are doing rubbings of leaves they found

0:04:16 > 0:04:21Oh, tiddlers, these pictures are brilliant.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24- So is there anything else that you want to show me?- The River Carron.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27- The River Carron. Is that nearby, Luca?- Yes.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- It's over there, right behind you. - Is that so?

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Well, let's go and see it. Come on.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43'Mrs Bell's a River Ranger and has helped make the River Carron

0:04:43 > 0:04:46'a brilliant place for the tiddlers to find out about nature.'

0:04:56 > 0:05:00- Oh, tiddlers. This is a lovely spot by the river, ain't it?- Yes.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05- So, what should we do? Shall we sunbathe?- No.- No? It's a nice day.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09- Hey, we could sail a boat.- No! - No, what d'you want to do down here?

0:05:09 > 0:05:11ALL: Kick sampling!

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Kick sampling. Well, that sounds like fun.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Mrs Bell, what do we need to do?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Get yourself into the water and get nice and stable.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23And then once you're steady, hold on to your net to balance you,

0:05:23 > 0:05:27- you can then start taking a little kick sample.- Easy does it.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30'The tiddlers know to be very careful when entering the water

0:05:30 > 0:05:35'and only go in the areas that Mrs Bell has made sure are safe.'

0:05:35 > 0:05:38THEY CHATTER

0:05:40 > 0:05:44So, Luca, what do you have to do to kick sample?

0:05:44 > 0:05:49Well, you have to place your foot where it is nice and comfortable.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Then you have to kick the river bed so all the insects

0:05:52 > 0:05:54- can get into the net.- Very good.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Right, shall I give it a go? Give it a go. Here I go.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Urgh! You tell me if I'm doing it right.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Oh, yeah! Look. The water's changing colour. Why's it doing that?

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- Because all the dust from the river bed.- Yeah.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11All the sediment is coming up.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Maybe there's a few animals in there as well.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Brilliant. Let's see what we've got.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35There's lots of weed and some leaves. Oh!

0:06:35 > 0:06:39You see those little things down there, wiggling around. Oh!

0:06:39 > 0:06:41I wonder what they are?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44- We've got a sheet that tells us all the names.- Hey.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Let's have a look at this, shall we?

0:06:48 > 0:06:50'Let's see what we've found.'

0:06:50 > 0:06:52What do you think. Which one?

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Maybe one of these.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57'I think it's a stonefly nymph.'

0:07:01 > 0:07:05So, Luca, can you tell me, why is it important to do kick sampling?

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- So we can see all the insects. - That's right.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Yeah, you can see all the animals and insects in the river.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14And what does that tell us about the river?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16- It tells you how healthy it is.- Yes.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18If there's lots of insects and animals

0:07:18 > 0:07:20it means the river's doing well.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23I think they must love where they live, just like you.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26I wonder if there are any other animals around here?

0:07:26 > 0:07:28ROUTE FINDER PINGS

0:07:28 > 0:07:32Oh, hey... It looks like the route finder has something to show us.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39The fresh water that flows in rivers can contain lots of goodness,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41so it is a great place for animals to live.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45This newt likes to keep nice and wet.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47And these shrimp like it in the river.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49There are so many of them underwater.

0:07:49 > 0:07:55Above water, these damselflies are really happy fluttering about.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Heh-heh. Rivers are fantastic places for birds, too.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Kingfishers are masters at catching fish for their tea.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Water shrews live right on the river's edge

0:08:09 > 0:08:11and they love going for a swim.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Oh! There are so many animals to see.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Wow! There's loads of animals that live beside

0:08:22 > 0:08:25- and in the river, aren't there, tiddlers?- ALL: Yes.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28What do you like about the river, Sean?

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Well, I like the sound of it.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32The sound. Yeah. Shall we just listen?

0:08:40 > 0:08:41- Relaxed as well.- Yes.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43And it's nice, ain't it,

0:08:43 > 0:08:46cos we've got this lovely bench that we can sit on.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50Although, hey, it's a bit overgrown back here, look. Look at all this.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52What do you reckon we could do about that?

0:08:52 > 0:08:58- We could get nicer flowers instead of these not nice flowers.- Wow!

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Tiddlers, that's a great idea. We could smarten this up, couldn't we?

0:09:02 > 0:09:06We can paint wildlife on the rocks.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Yeah, we could make a rockery.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I think we need to get to work. Come on, let's go.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43- Have you seen some worms round here?- Uh-huh.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46So these are all things that you have seen in the meadow.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Oh, Ciara, that is brilliant. Oh, can you tell me about it?

0:09:55 > 0:09:58It's a fish in a fish tank

0:09:58 > 0:10:03- and I have got some grass seed to make it fish food.- Some fish food.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07In case he gets hungry. You know what, that's inspired me.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Let's go and put them round that bench.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48'While we were painting, some River Rangers helped by clearing

0:10:48 > 0:10:51'away all the weeds around the bench.'

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Now, look, tiddlers!
