0:02:54 > 0:02:57Ankles together. Chins on hands.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00WHISTLE BLOWS

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Hey! Hello, there, Abigail.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Hello, Joe. It's nice to see you.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Hey, thanks for inviting me along today. This looks cracking.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So, who are all your friends here?

0:03:19 > 0:03:22These are the Nippers and they are coaches.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26- And what are you training for? - To be a lifeguard.- Really?

0:03:26 > 0:03:30Now, I didn't know that tiddlers like you could be lifeguards.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33If I wanted to be a Nipper, what would I have to do?

0:03:33 > 0:03:36You would have to train in the swimming pool.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38You have to train on the beach.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42- So, you have to be able to swim if you want to be a Nipper?- Yeah.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46- And how old do you have to be? - Seven.- Seven? Is that right?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Are you seven, Joe?

0:03:49 > 0:03:52You can be with your dad if you're five.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57- What's your favourite thing about being a Nipper, Joe?- Doing flags.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01- Doing flags - is this what your friends are doing right now?- Yes.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08The coaches and junior lifeguards put the flags -

0:04:08 > 0:04:12well, they're really just pieces of pipe - they put them in the sand.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Then, the Nippers have to lie down and not look.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Then, when the coach blows the whistle,

0:04:18 > 0:04:22the Nippers have to jump up and race to grab a flag.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24There they go! But you know what?

0:04:24 > 0:04:26It's just like musical chairs,

0:04:26 > 0:04:29because there are never enough and the last one there is out.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40So, you've got to be able to swim.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43You've got to be five if you're with your dad, or seven.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46- What are you wearing? - BOTH: Wet suits.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- That's right. Why are wet suits important?- They make you warm.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52That's right. Sometimes the sea can be chilly.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57- If you're wearing a wet suit, you don't get quite as cold, do you?- No.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Tell me, what other types of training that you do?

0:05:07 > 0:05:12- Run, wade, run.- Run, wade, run? Hey, that sounds exciting, Joe.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Would you like to see it?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17You bet I would. So, what do we have to do?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20You have to go over there, between the two lifeguards,

0:05:20 > 0:05:25and stand there and then we get in our place,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28and you have to put your hands up and put them down.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32And then that means we have to run around the first lifeguard,

0:05:32 > 0:05:36and then run across you, run across the other lifeguard,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38then through the finish line and stop.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Wow. I take my arms, throw them up in the air,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44bring them down, then you're off. Is that right?

0:05:44 > 0:05:46- Yes.- Well, this sounds good to me.

0:05:46 > 0:05:51- You run over to your friends and I'll go and get in the sea.- OK.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54We're here.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Run, wade, run is like a practice rescue.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01It's how the Nippers practise running through the water quickly.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Right, so I think I'm ready to be rescued.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07If I remember, Abigail said I need to raise my arms up when I'm ready.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Here we go!

0:06:10 > 0:06:11Go!

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Oh, good running! Good running, Nippers!

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Good running! Keep going!

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- Second.- Brilliant!

0:06:24 > 0:06:25Fourth.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30That was top work. High-five, Nippers!

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37- Wow.- I was fourth.- Who won that? - Me!- Did you?- I came fourth.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40- Was that good fun?- Yeah. - Was that good fun?

0:06:40 > 0:06:42You guys were tearing through the water.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45How do you run through the water so fast?

0:06:45 > 0:06:48You just go like this and run.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50- Really, you hold your feet up high? - Like that.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- Like this?- Yeah.- Yeah. - Is this right?- Yeah.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56And sometimes if you're deep, you go...

0:06:56 > 0:06:59It'll help you through the water quicker.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Hey, the Route Finder's going to

0:07:09 > 0:07:12show us some of the training we were doing.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15All the games the Nippers play help them

0:07:15 > 0:07:18practise the skills they need to be lifeguards.

0:07:18 > 0:07:19They need to react quickly,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23have eagle eyes to spot people in the sea.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26And run really fast.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29And, Joe, why do you think it's important

0:07:29 > 0:07:31to have lifeguards on a beach like this?

0:07:31 > 0:07:36Because if they're in trouble, the lifeguards will come and save them.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39That's right. If people are in trouble in the water,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41then the lifeguards go and help them.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Abigail tells me there have been surf life-saving clubs

0:07:45 > 0:07:48in South Wales for almost 50 years.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Now, that's a long time keeping people safe.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53What's the craic with these hats?

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Why are you wearing these hats in Nippers?

0:07:55 > 0:07:57If we got in trouble,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00they'd know where we are and they'd come and save us,

0:08:00 > 0:08:04- and they'd know it was one of the Nippers.- Right, I see.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08- So, you wear hats so the lifeguards can see you. Is that right?- Yeah.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12- ROUTE FINDER CHIMES - Hey up! Looks like my Route Finder.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Hey, you know what it's going to show us?

0:08:14 > 0:08:18It's going to show us the other things you can do at the seaside.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24People have been coming to the seaside for years and years

0:08:24 > 0:08:27because there's loads of things you can do.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29You can build a sand castle...

0:08:33 > 0:08:35..or you could go for a paddle.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Hey, you could watch a Punch and Judy show...

0:08:42 > 0:08:45..or just play with a bat and ball.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53Or, if you've had lots of training, you could go surfing.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Surfers practise hard

0:09:02 > 0:09:06so they can catch a wave and stand up on the boards.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08They have to be strong swimmers.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18But, if something goes wrong and they need help,

0:09:18 > 0:09:21lifeguards can speed to the rescue.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28It's great spending time at the seaside.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33The relay race is where

0:09:33 > 0:09:37the Nippers really practise their speed.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43Wow, look at them go!

0:10:06 > 0:10:10All that running looks like good exercise to me.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13- Hi, Mr Bloom, I'm Tom.- Ah, Tom. It's nice to meet you.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17You look a bit big to be a Nipper. Are you a surf life-saver, too?

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Yes, I'm involved in the national team. I grew up being a Nipper.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- I've been involved since I was around eight.- I see.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Where are you doing surf life-saving now? Have you moved on?

0:10:28 > 0:10:31I'm still involved locally, but I've been across the world

0:10:31 > 0:10:34to France, Australia, a number of places.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Australia? That's right on the other side of the world.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Did you have to use any of the skills you learnt?

0:10:40 > 0:10:43I was racing in the world titles in Australia.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47There was a problem where we had to rush in

0:10:47 > 0:10:50and save some people, where there was boats hitting rocks.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53The skills I learned as a Nipper really helped.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57So, the skills they're learning, they'll be able to use them in the

0:10:57 > 0:10:59future to save lives, like you?

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Exactly. The skills will stay with them for a lifetime.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Jolly good. Are you off into the sea?

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- Yeah, just going to catch some waves. - I'll let you get on. Cheers, Tom.
