0:04:59 > 0:05:02She's been doing a bit of pond dipping

0:05:02 > 0:05:05to check what's living in the water.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and Jo is going to lead us on an expedition

0:05:15 > 0:05:17to find something a bit bigger.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Well, here we are. It's a nice pond.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- What do you think we might find living here?- Toads.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32- Tadpoles.- Maybe toads. Where would the tadpoles be?- Underwater.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37What else might we find on the land? It starts life as a tadpole.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41- A frog.- A frog. And what's special about toads and frogs?

0:05:41 > 0:05:44- They're amphibians. - They are amphibians.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46That means they can go in water and land.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Yeah, really clever. Today we'll stay on the land.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53We won't search for them in the water.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- We're not amphibians, are we?- No. - Do we live in the water?- No!

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- Do we live on the land?- Yes!

0:06:00 > 0:06:02We've got frogs and toads.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05There's something else that begins with N.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- Newt.- That's right. Newts.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13- Newts have little tails. Is that right, Joanna?- They have.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17They look like lizards but they have soft skin, like frogs and toads.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- I see something! - Me too! Me too! Me too!

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Let's be careful as we go.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Remember, it's important to take care when walking near water.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Don't get too close to the edge.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44We haven't done well on our amphibian hunt.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47We haven't found any frogs, no toads, no newts.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52It's quite sunny and they're probably hiding in the shade near the pond.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56But luckily I was out earlier on and I found something.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- Would you like to see?- Yes! - Yes, please.- Just over here.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Jo has been keeping them safe in the shade.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- Shall we see what I found earlier on then?- Yes.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- A baby frog.- A baby frog.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19He's tiny isn't he, tiddlers?

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Yeah. How old is it?

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Well, that was probably from this year,

0:07:24 > 0:07:28so he was probably frogspawn in a pond at the start of the year.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31- He may not even be one! - No.- He's a tiny frog.

0:07:31 > 0:07:36- And how old are some frogs?- They could get up to about six years old.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40- How old are you, tiddlers? - ALL: Six!- Wow!

0:07:40 > 0:07:45Just think, there are some frogs and toads that are the same age as you!

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- What have we got here? - A newt!- A newt.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- It is a newt.- And look, he's got a long tail, hasn't he?

0:07:54 > 0:07:58And what do you think the last thing is that I've got in my bucket?

0:07:58 > 0:08:02- A frog.- We've got frogs. - We've got frogs, we've got newts.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- What haven't we got?- A big toad!

0:08:04 > 0:08:08A toad! Let me wet my hands again.

0:08:08 > 0:08:09Here he comes.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12- Oh!- Ah!- So, it's a...

0:08:12 > 0:08:19- Toad!- Yeah.- And he has beautiful golden eyes.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21And you see the spots on his back?

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Oo-ooh! He made a jump for it.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28We need to be nice and quiet so we don't scare them.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Wow, look at that toad. He's a lot bigger than the frogs.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35- Yeah.- And how old might this toad be, Joanne?- Oh!

0:08:35 > 0:08:39- I have heard about toads living up to 40 years old!- 40 years old?!

0:08:39 > 0:08:45- And they can get about that big. - That big?- Even bigger than that!

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- BELL RINGS! - Oh, hey-oop, it's the route finder.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Ah, and it's going to show us more

0:08:50 > 0:08:54about the creatures that live by ponds and lakes.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58These newts are called Great Crested Newts.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02They like to come out at night and swim about looking for food.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Hey, look at his frilly back!

0:09:04 > 0:09:07He looks like a tiny dragon.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Toads like the night-time, too.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13These natterjack toads make fantastic sounds

0:09:13 > 0:09:17- when they call to their friends. - HE MAKES A WHIRRING HUM

0:09:17 > 0:09:20They're quite rare, as their habitat -

0:09:20 > 0:09:23that's where they live - is disappearing.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27So it's important we look after them.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30There aren't as many toads around as there used to be

0:09:30 > 0:09:33because we've taken away some of their habitats

0:09:33 > 0:09:35by building our houses.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38How can we help the toads? Any ideas, tiddlers?

0:09:38 > 0:09:41- We could make a house for them. - A house?

0:09:41 > 0:09:43What type of house could we make?

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Would it be a house that you and I live in?

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- No.- A smaller house. - Good idea.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:09:49 > 0:09:54- So maybe we could make a really small house for these toads.- Yeah.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Ooh, I've got an idea. We could call it a toad abode

0:09:57 > 0:10:00cos abode is another word for house.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03So who's up for making a toad abode?

0:10:03 > 0:10:04- ALL:- Me!

0:10:09 > 0:10:11So, Jo, what do we need to do?

0:10:11 > 0:10:16So, to make our toad abodes, we need something for our toads to live in.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20So we've got these very lovely gardening pots.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Just small, about 20cm across.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27- And that's going to be the walls of the toad abode.- Ooh!

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- Do you think we should add anything? It's a bit bare.- Yeah.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35- What might toads like?- Leaves. - We could.- Sticks.- Sticks.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39- Some soil?- And soil would be a really good idea as well.- Grass?

0:10:39 > 0:10:43- And grass!- Yeah, some grass. - Who needs a flowerpot?- Me.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- OK, there you go.- Me! - Here's one for you.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48We're using brand-new pots

0:10:48 > 0:10:51but you can use any old pot to make a toad abode.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55- Hello, tiddlers! - Hello.- Hello, Mr Bloom.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58We have to tear them up.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Scrunch them up and make a nice nest

0:11:00 > 0:11:03for Mr Toad to bury himself in.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Hey, they're looking good to me!

0:11:06 > 0:11:09You'd normally dig a little hole,

0:11:09 > 0:11:11a little bowl shape in the ground,

0:11:11 > 0:11:16and you could rest your pot in there so it doesn't roll around.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20We can put them by a fence or a wall.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24You could do. That would be a really nice, shady spot.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28So somewhere by water and where it's nice and shady.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32There we go, tiddlers, it's our Toad Abode Road!

0:11:32 > 0:11:35We'll put them in place later.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42Well, Georgia, Emily and Kirsten, have you had fun today?

0:11:42 > 0:11:44- ALL:- Yeah!

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Oh, I'm glad cos I have had a top time.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49So a big thank you for inviting me along.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53And to you, Jo, cos we've seen some amazing things.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55But the time's come, I've got to go.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58So you join me soon, when I'll be...

0:11:58 > 0:12:00- ALL:- Here and there!

0:12:00 > 0:12:05- That's right, tiddlers. Bye-bye!- Bye!- Bye, Mr Bloom!- Bye!

0:12:05 > 0:12:07# Where is it you like to go?

0:12:07 > 0:12:09# Call me up and let me know

0:12:09 > 0:12:11# What is it you like to do?

0:12:11 > 0:12:13# I'll pop along and do it too

0:12:13 > 0:12:16# Cities, towns, the countryside

0:12:16 > 0:12:18# I can travel far and wide

0:12:18 > 0:12:21# I'm all about and everywhere

0:12:21 > 0:12:23# I'm here and there. #
