0:01:18 > 0:01:20Hi, I'm Cian and this is Tegan and April.
0:01:20 > 0:01:25ALL: And where we live is brilliant!
0:01:25 > 0:01:30We live close to Snibston Discovery Centre.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33This whole place used to be a coal mine.
0:01:36 > 0:01:41People used to dig deep down to look for coal.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44My grandad used to be a coalminer.
0:01:44 > 0:01:45See you on the other side.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49It was hard work and very dark in the mine.
0:01:54 > 0:01:59Also at the museum is a cool outside place to play.
0:02:02 > 0:02:07I can climb up high. Then come back down on the slide.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15My dad used to drive this bus.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21It's good when things are not used any more.
0:02:21 > 0:02:26They can be put in the museum for everyone to see.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31We love Snibston! So many things to see.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34ALL: Please come and look around!
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Well, sounds good to me. I'm on me way!
0:02:45 > 0:02:48# Whereabouts will I end up next?
0:02:49 > 0:02:52# Let's put my route finder to the test
0:02:53 > 0:02:56# It could be a beach, a village or a city.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59# Museum or a school, a garden so pretty
0:02:59 > 0:03:01# A church or a station a river or town
0:03:01 > 0:03:04# I just cant wait till you show me around
0:03:04 > 0:03:07# Tiddlers, I'm on my way
0:03:07 > 0:03:09# So where am I today? #
0:03:16 > 0:03:20The Discovery Museum. Now that sounds interesting.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35Vroooom!
0:03:41 > 0:03:46Compost Corner! That's a surprising thing to have at a museum.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49It's a curious place, this.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53Oh, look, look, I've spied the tiddlers an' all!
0:03:57 > 0:04:03- Hey, hello there, tiddlers!- Hello, Mr Bloom!- Oh, it's nice to see you.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Thank you for inviting me to the museum. What are you up to?
0:04:06 > 0:04:10- We're doing composting.- Composting! I like a bit of composting.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14- And Tegan, who have you got helping you?- This is Rod.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Nice to meet you, Mr Bloom.
0:04:16 > 0:04:18It's always nice to meet a fellow composter.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21- Can I have a look in your bin? - Oh, please do.
0:04:21 > 0:04:25Oh, we have lots going on in here. That looks good.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28Tegan, do you know how this composting bin works?
0:04:28 > 0:04:32The waste goes in the top and the compost comes out the bottom.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35That's right. Well done.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39That compost can be put on plants and will help them to grow.
0:04:39 > 0:04:43Rod, let's see how much you know about composting.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46How does all the waste get turned into compost?
0:04:46 > 0:04:51There's lots of creatures that live in the compost and in the soil,
0:04:51 > 0:04:55like slugs and snails, and most important, lots and lots of worms.
0:04:55 > 0:05:01Most of them eat the food and what comes out the other end is compost.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03That's how compost gets made.
0:05:03 > 0:05:08The other animal that you find in compost bins ever so often are ants.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11Oh, yes. What are they doing, Tegan?
0:05:11 > 0:05:16- They are crawling on some sludgy thing.- Yes.
0:05:16 > 0:05:22Just look at them in the compost bin with those old bananas and pea pods.
0:05:22 > 0:05:26- And in this one we have some very small flies.- I can see them.
0:05:26 > 0:05:31- They are little dots moving. - Oh, yes, they are tiny, aren't they?
0:05:31 > 0:05:35And you get fruit flies that live on the skins of bananas and things.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39I don't know about you, tiddlers, but I think that's pretty amazing.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42Are there other ways that we can do some composting?
0:05:42 > 0:05:47- We could do grass boarding. - Grass boarding! Come on, let's go.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54Right, Cian, tell us about this grass boarding.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59You put cardboard and grass on, and it turns into compost.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03Right, so it's building a big cardboard and grass tower.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07- A skyscraper.- A compost skyscraper. Hey, that sounds good to me!
0:06:07 > 0:06:11Well, tiddlers, all this talk about composting
0:06:11 > 0:06:13has got me itching to do some.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17- What do you reckon, shall we have a go at some composting?- ALL: Yes!
0:06:20 > 0:06:24We are going to make a rot pot, a compost bin in a bottle.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27We are going to put plant material in here
0:06:27 > 0:06:31and it will rot down and turn into compost. Like this one.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34And then, we can plant a seed in it and it will grow
0:06:34 > 0:06:38- and then we can plant that in the garden.- Very good.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41What do you reckon, tiddlers, shall we make some rot pots?
0:06:41 > 0:06:43- ALL: Yes!- Yes.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45Gloves are very important.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48We should never handle compost material with our hands,
0:06:48 > 0:06:52and a grown-up needs to cut the top of the plastic bottles.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55Who would like some mouldy lettuce?
0:06:55 > 0:06:59- Me!- There you go. Have some old lettuce.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05Cardboard and paper in compost bins contains lots of carbon which
0:07:05 > 0:07:07stops it going wet and slimy.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10That is good for us, isn't it, tiddlers,
0:07:10 > 0:07:13- cos we do not want it to be too smelly, do we?- No.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15So, what have you got in your hotpot, Cian?
0:07:15 > 0:07:17- Hay.- Grass.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19Petals.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23And it is good because, otherwise, all this stuff that
0:07:23 > 0:07:26could be thrown away, we are using it, aren't we?
0:07:26 > 0:07:28Yes, we are turning it into compost.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32- We are going to use it to make new stuff.- Yes.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36- So we can do some planting in it. - Some useful stuff.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39Rod, how long will it be before these rot pots
0:07:39 > 0:07:42- are ready for planting?- They normally take about six weeks.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44Six weeks?
0:07:44 > 0:07:47In a nice sunny position it will sink down as it rots,
0:07:47 > 0:07:50and then you top it up with more material.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53It will be ready to put the plant in.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Hey, well, well done, tiddlers, you finished your rot pots.
0:07:56 > 0:08:00They smell pretty bad but they look cracking.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02And the bean in that rot pot is ready to plant.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07- Do you know where we can plant it? - Plant it in my garden, Mr Bloom.
0:08:07 > 0:08:11Well, that sounds like a good idea to me, April. Let's go.
0:08:14 > 0:08:16So, we've got our flowerpots,
0:08:16 > 0:08:19we've got the plants, we've got the rot bot with the bean plant in it.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21What's the last thing we need?
0:08:21 > 0:08:26- Compost!- Compost!- Compost. Well, tiddlers, let's get planting.
0:08:26 > 0:08:28Pop it in your pot.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30And then poke a bit of compost back down the bottom.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35You have to fill it up to the same height of the plant.
0:08:35 > 0:08:39That's right, and then it'll be nice and level,
0:08:39 > 0:08:42and that means it'll be a happy plant.
0:08:42 > 0:08:43Yeah!
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Hey, well, that was top planting, tiddlers. We got everything done.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55And what we've learnt today is that some things like household waste
0:08:55 > 0:08:57can be turned into compost.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59That's pretty useful, isn't it?
0:09:00 > 0:09:03Ey up. Looks like the route finder's got something for us.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09Ah, yeah, look. It's showing us some other things can be reused, too.
0:09:10 > 0:09:14Things that can't be composted might be able to be recycled.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18This tiddler is sorting through some things that can be recycled.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21There's paper, plastic and metal.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25This machine separates things that can be recycled.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28They're then crushed into massive blocks
0:09:28 > 0:09:30and then they're ready to be turned into new things.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33Perhaps a cardboard box or a can of drink.
0:09:35 > 0:09:37Hey! These tiddlers are recycling.
0:09:37 > 0:09:41They're turning plastic bottles into this brilliant greenhouse. Mm!
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Fantastic for growing plants.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53With our hands washed, it's time for a picnic in the sunshine.
0:09:56 > 0:10:01- Hm! Oh, that was a nice picnic. What do you reckon, tiddlers?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05I am full. But I'm looking here, and there's a lot to tidy up.
0:10:05 > 0:10:09So, what do you reckon we could do with these plastic bottles, April?
0:10:09 > 0:10:13- We could put them in the recycling box, Mr Bloom.- Ah!
0:10:13 > 0:10:17- That was just what I was thinking. Cian, do you want to do that?- Yeah.
0:10:17 > 0:10:18Off you bob.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28- All done?- Yep.- High-five.
0:10:28 > 0:10:32Now, we've done the plastic, but what about all these food scraps?
0:10:32 > 0:10:34What do you reckon we could do with those, Tegan?
0:10:34 > 0:10:39- We could turn them into compost. - Exactly! We could compost them.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41How could we compost this? What could we put it in?
0:10:41 > 0:10:46- A wormery!- Right, then. A wormery it is.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48Worms are super composters,
0:10:48 > 0:10:52and a wormery is a compost bin where loads of worms can live.
0:10:52 > 0:10:56Rod shows us how to make one using a plastic dustbin and some flowerpots.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00Then it's time to add the worms. Wow!
0:11:02 > 0:11:07They're wiggling away, aren't they? Ooh! They're very wiggly.
0:11:07 > 0:11:12- And they look very happy to me. What do you reckon, tiddlers?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:11:12 > 0:11:15- Hello, worms! Do you think they're hungry?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26That's the food. We never put oranges or onion in there.
0:11:28 > 0:11:33But we do need to put some paper, and then cover it up with cardboard,
0:11:33 > 0:11:36to keep it nice and damp and happy.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Just need to put the lid on, then it's finished. There we go.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44- The wormery's done! Hey, April, are you pleased with it?- Yeah.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47Oh, well, I'm glad, and when the worms have made the compost,
0:11:47 > 0:11:49it'll be great for April's garden.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52And I'm also glad that you guys invited me
0:11:52 > 0:11:57- here today cos I've had a cracking time. Have you had fun, too?- Yeah!
0:11:57 > 0:11:58Well, that is brilliant.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00But you know what, it's time I hit the road now,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02so join me again soon when I'll be...
0:12:02 > 0:12:08- Here and there!- You're right. Bye-bye, tiddlers.- Bye!
0:12:08 > 0:12:10# Where is it you like to go?
0:12:10 > 0:12:13# Call me up and let me know
0:12:13 > 0:12:18# What is it you like to do? I'll pop along and do it too
0:12:18 > 0:12:22# Cities, towns, the countryside I can travel far and wide
0:12:22 > 0:12:27# I'm all about and everywhere I'm here and there. #
