0:06:18 > 0:06:22Wow, Tiddlers, this is a proper gem of a garden, isn't it?

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Hey, those people,

0:06:30 > 0:06:34they must have a great view of this garden from their windows.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- Hey, Beth, who's this? - It's Mrs Miller.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- She tells us about the apple trees. - It's nice to meet you, Mrs Miller.

0:06:45 > 0:06:46Hello, Mr Bloom.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Now, you've got apple trees growing all over the place.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53We have apple trees growing up a pole.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55This one's a Galloway Pippin.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59It'll grow to a lovely, big, juicy, tasty apple.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- You made the most of the space, didn't you?- We did indeed.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05We even have a tree that's growing against a wall

0:07:05 > 0:07:07and, would you believe, we've got

0:07:07 > 0:07:10one low down that we call a step-over.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Oh, yeah, Luca's taking a closer look.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19So, Tiddlers, what do you think of these apples?

0:07:19 > 0:07:22- Are they ready to pick?- ALL: No. - No, of course not.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25- Isn't that right, Mrs Miller? - That's right, Mr Bloom.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27They're not ready to pick yet.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31We've got two nice big ones and three little ones, so we're going

0:07:31 > 0:07:35to take off the little apples to let the big apples grow more.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Hey, that sounds clever. Is there a special name for that?

0:07:39 > 0:07:42- We call it thinning out the apples. - Right, so what do you reckon?

0:07:42 > 0:07:46- Shall we thin out the apples? - BOTH: Yes.- Yes, come on then.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- Hey, good work, Amy. - Let's take off the little ones.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56So, now you've taken these little apples,

0:07:56 > 0:08:00- what's going to happen to the rest? - They're going to start growing.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04Yeah, they'll grow bigger and bigger and bigger.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08- When they are ready, do you know how they're picked?- No.- No?

0:08:08 > 0:08:09ROUTE FINDER SOUNDS

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Ooh, ay-up! I think the Route Finder wants to show us.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16There are lots of different types of apples.

0:08:16 > 0:08:21Some are red, some are green and some are red AND green.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26When apples are big and ripe, it's time for them to be picked.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28They can be plucked by hand

0:08:28 > 0:08:31or a machine can shake them loose.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Look, it's raining apples!

0:08:34 > 0:08:38The juice from these apples is used to make drinks.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41The hand-picked apples are then washed and packed,

0:08:41 > 0:08:43ready for the shops.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51Now, Tiddlers, I know something rather exciting about apples.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54If you get an apple, you cut it in half across its middle,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57- you get a...- ALL: Star!

0:08:57 > 0:09:01That's right. It's a star. We've got a star shape.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05What do you think those are in the middle, the brown things?

0:09:05 > 0:09:09- ALL: Seeds.- They're seeds. They're also known as pips.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12An apple pip was planted in this pot one year ago and, look,

0:09:12 > 0:09:14an apple tree has started to grow.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17A little tree like this is called a sapling.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- It's still got a lot of growing to do...- ALL: Yes.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22..before it turns into a big apple tree.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26- Tiddlers, would you like to plant some pips?- ALL: Yes!

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Yeah, let's plant some apple pips. Hold out your hands like that.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33That's it. Luca, I'll give you a pip there.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Amy, if you take the finger on your other hand, make a little

0:09:37 > 0:09:42wiggly hole in your pot, that's it, and then pop the pip in there.

0:09:45 > 0:09:46Then cover it over.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49Oh, hello, Mrs Miller. What have we got here?

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- We've got a little crab apple, Mr Bloom.- Oh, an apple sapling.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- And how old is it?- Three years old now.- Three years old.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00Oh, so this is a little Tiddler tree, isn't it?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Tiddlers, why don't you get this planted here

0:10:03 > 0:10:07and then the visitors to the garden will be able to enjoy it

0:10:07 > 0:10:09for years to come?

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Go on, you get stuck in there.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15Whilst you're doing that, I'm going to have a look at the kitchens

0:10:15 > 0:10:17in Callendar House.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27As well as the gardens,

0:10:27 > 0:10:32in here we can see what a kitchen looked like almost 200 years ago.
