0:00:20 > 0:00:24This story belongs to Logan and his Grandpa Logan.
0:00:35 > 0:00:41It's a tiny tale about Grandpa Logan and the things he used to do.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51Now it's time for him to share his memories
0:00:51 > 0:00:55and take Logan on a journey of discovery.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13Logan, have you seen this car before?
0:01:13 > 0:01:17- No. Why is it in a plastic box? - Because it's a very special car.
0:01:17 > 0:01:22This is a small version of one I used to race with.
0:01:22 > 0:01:26It was a bigger version I raced with.
0:01:26 > 0:01:31That's why this is in a special box. Did you know I was a racing driver?
0:01:31 > 0:01:34- Were you?- Yeah.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36But that was a long time ago.
0:01:36 > 0:01:42- Was it?- Yeah.- How many years ago? - Oh, it'd be 50 years ago.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45- 50?- I used to win a lot of races in this car.- Did you?
0:01:45 > 0:01:50It was a good, good car. We used to win a lot of trophies with that car.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53Yeah, how many did you?
0:01:53 > 0:02:00- Oh, I think probably over the time I had it, maybe 12.- 12?- 12, yeah.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02- That's a lot.- It is a lot. Yeah.
0:02:02 > 0:02:07- I used to drive cars very fast.- Yeah? - But I had to be very careful.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11Didn't want to get involved in any accidents.
0:02:11 > 0:02:12So you had to be extra careful.
0:02:12 > 0:02:17And they talk some more about what it was like back then.
0:02:17 > 0:02:21And they went for a walk to find out more.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24When I was a little boy, I loved cars.
0:02:24 > 0:02:30My dad owned a garage and he used to fix cars and any spare time I had,
0:02:30 > 0:02:34I was over, giving him a hand, watching him repairing cars.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Managed to pass my driving test, but at that time
0:02:37 > 0:02:43I was still studying motor mechanics and I enjoyed every minute of it.
0:02:43 > 0:02:48And I enjoyed every minute of driving a good car and a fast car.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51Then Grandpa Logan told Logan
0:02:51 > 0:02:56stories about how much he loved racing cars when he was younger.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Just like in these old pictures.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02When drivers like Grandpa Logan started the race,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04someone would start the clock.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07The clock would time how long it took Grandpa Logan
0:03:07 > 0:03:11to go from the starting line to the finish line.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15The clock would tell people who had driven their car the fastest
0:03:15 > 0:03:17to see who the winner of the race was.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Then Grandpa Logan took Logan to see an old racing car,
0:03:28 > 0:03:31just like the one he used to drive.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35It's in the very place where Grandpa Logan started a very long race
0:03:35 > 0:03:38many years ago.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41Logan, many years ago when I was a young man,
0:03:41 > 0:03:45I used to drive racing cars and rally cars.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48- Yeah.- One of the rallies was the Monte Carlo Rally.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53- Do you know where Monte Carlo is? - Erm...
0:03:53 > 0:03:59- No.- Monte Carlo is in the south of France, a long way away from here.
0:04:06 > 0:04:11And this is exactly where it started, the Royal Scottish Automobile Club.
0:04:11 > 0:04:16- And the cars were all lined up there. - Were the cars all in a row?
0:04:16 > 0:04:20They were all in a row, right round the square.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23And this is where the start line was.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27- So, Logan, this is the type of car that I used to race with.- Yeah.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30And it's called a Hillman Imp.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32Remember earlier, Logan,
0:04:32 > 0:04:37I said to you that the race from Scotland to Monte Carlo
0:04:37 > 0:04:40in France took six days?
0:04:40 > 0:04:44- Yeah.- During that time, you had to sleep in the car.- Did you?
0:04:44 > 0:04:49- And also eat in the car. - Where did you sleep?
0:04:49 > 0:04:51We just slept in the front seat.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55- Do you know where the engine is in this car?- In the front?
0:04:55 > 0:04:58That's a good guess. But it's not, on this occasion.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02The engine is round the back here.
0:05:02 > 0:05:07This is the engine and it's a special engine.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10It makes it go very fast.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12It looks like a big engine.
0:05:12 > 0:05:17It is a big engine. And that's what makes the car go very fast.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24Now it's time to have a look inside the old racing car.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27Right, Logan, let's let you see inside the car now.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29We'll show you some of the instruments,
0:05:29 > 0:05:31tell you what it's all about.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35The inside of the racing car looks very different to cars nowadays.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39- Right, do you see all the instruments?- Instruments?
0:05:39 > 0:05:46- Yeah, all these switches. Do you want to put some on?- I will put spots.
0:05:46 > 0:05:52- See the lights in the front? See the lights all working?- What lights?
0:05:52 > 0:05:57- This is the wiper on.- Yeah.- And then we've got another lever here.
0:05:59 > 0:06:01HORN BLARES
0:06:01 > 0:06:02What happened there?
0:06:02 > 0:06:06That's a horn and it's a loud, loud horn
0:06:06 > 0:06:11- because we've got to have that when we're driving fast.- Why?
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Because when you're driving fast, with a normal horn,
0:06:14 > 0:06:15people wouldn't hear it.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Right, one thing we've not done yet, Logan...- Yeah.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20- ..is go for a drive.- YAY!
0:06:20 > 0:06:24But before that, you must have your seat belt on.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26ENGINE REVS
0:06:35 > 0:06:40What fun! Driving around with Grandpa in the old racing car.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02Racing car drivers like Grandpa Logan would race for days
0:07:02 > 0:07:04from one country to another country.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08Sometimes, races would start at night-time.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12The racing car drivers would drive through snowy, cold countries
0:07:12 > 0:07:14and then through sunny, hot countries.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16The cars would need to climb mountains
0:07:16 > 0:07:20and also race through the towns.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Here is Grandpa Logan in these old pictures.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27Grandpa Logan raced in all sorts of racing cars.
0:07:27 > 0:07:30In the cars with him was another man.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33He was called a navigator and he told him where to go
0:07:33 > 0:07:35so they didn't get lost.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38When Grandpa Logan needed to sleep,
0:07:38 > 0:07:41his navigator would drive the car.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48But Grandpa Logan isn't the only person who races cars in the family.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52This is my dad.
0:07:52 > 0:07:58Logan's dad, Andrew, also races cars just like Grandpa Logan.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02When Dad Andrew was little, he loved cars too.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07He even built his own go-kart with an engine to make it go.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09As he got older, his cars got bigger.
0:08:09 > 0:08:13Look at Dad Andrew and Grandpa Logan in this picture.
0:08:13 > 0:08:18Andrew started to win races, just like Grandpa Logan.
0:08:18 > 0:08:22Andrew's cars got bigger the better he got at driving.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Dad Andrew's car is different from Grandpa Logan's old car.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29It's newer and can go much faster.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33This is a racetrack which is made only for racing cars
0:08:33 > 0:08:37so they can go really fast when they're in a race.
0:08:37 > 0:08:41- Did you have a look at Grandpa's old racing car today?- Yes.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44- Would you like to look at my new racing car?- Yes, please.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Logan is in for a big surprise
0:08:49 > 0:08:51when he sees the inside of his dad's car.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55It doesn't look anything like his grandpa's car.
0:08:58 > 0:09:02The inside of my car is very different from Grandpa's car.
0:09:02 > 0:09:06We've got a button to start it instead of a key,
0:09:06 > 0:09:11and, also, there's a very big brake pedal to help slow the car down.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13- Where's the big brake pedal? - Just there.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15- In the middle?- Yeah.
0:09:15 > 0:09:19Do you notice anything about the seats?
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Daddy, why is there only one?
0:09:21 > 0:09:23Well, there's only one seat
0:09:23 > 0:09:27because Grandpa had somebody to tell him what direction to go.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30I don't need anybody to tell me what direction to go
0:09:30 > 0:09:34because I'm going the same route round and round again.
0:09:34 > 0:09:39Can your car go as fast as Grandpa's car?
0:09:39 > 0:09:41- Well, do you want to find out? - Yeah!
0:09:53 > 0:09:56With a big roar of the engines,

0:10:12 > 0:10:17Grandpa Logan reaches the first corner in front of Dad.
