0:00:20 > 0:00:24This story belongs to Lucy and her grandad Trevor.

0:00:36 > 0:00:41It's a tiny tale about Grandad Trevor and the things he used to do.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Now it's time for him to share his memories

0:00:49 > 0:00:53and take Lucy on a journey of discovery.

0:00:57 > 0:01:03Her grandad Trevor has lots to tell about the things he loves to do.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13- Wow, Lucy, what are you doing there? - I'm colouring in.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16- What are you colouring in? - A train.- A train?

0:01:16 > 0:01:22- Did I ever tell you about when I used to be a train driver?- No.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25This was my train driver's hat when I was younger.

0:01:25 > 0:01:30- What kind of trains did you drive? - I used to drive steam trains.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Before I was a train driver, I used to be

0:01:33 > 0:01:37a guard on the railway as well, so I would clip all the tickets,

0:01:37 > 0:01:41wave the flags and make sure that the train left the station safely.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45How old were you when you started driving trains?

0:01:45 > 0:01:50The first train I ever drove was when I was 18 years of age.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52That's a long time ago now, Lucy.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56- What was your favourite train?- My favourite train was the River Mite.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59And they talked a while about long ago,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02when Grandad Trevor first worked on the railways.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07How interesting!

0:02:07 > 0:02:10So Lucy and her grandad went for a walk

0:02:10 > 0:02:12to find out about his love for trains.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Grandad, did you always like trains?

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Yes, Lucy, I've always liked trains from a very young age.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25When I was a little boy, we used to travel up and down on the trains.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30Oh, look, there's Grandad Trevor with his little sister on the train.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33I can always remember what the steam trains were like.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36And Grandad Trevor still loves trains.

0:02:42 > 0:02:47Look at these old pictures from a long, long time ago.

0:02:54 > 0:02:59In the olden days, just like now, lots of people travelled by train.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01But they were steam trains.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04A coal fire was used to heat the boiler

0:03:04 > 0:03:07and the water got so hot that it turned to steam.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18And that steam powered the engine and made the train go faster.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33And the faster the train went, the noisier it became.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34WHISTLE BLOWS

0:03:34 > 0:03:36It was a lot of fun for the passengers.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39But with all that shovelling coal

0:03:39 > 0:03:42to keep the fire burning and the engine running,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45it was a hard and dirty job for the train driver.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55These steam trains may look very old-fashioned

0:03:55 > 0:03:57but they are still used today,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00and lots of people love to take a trip on them.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06We are now in the signal box

0:04:06 > 0:04:09where Grandad used to work and still does work.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13- What's a signal?- A signal is to make the train start and stop.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17They also help to keep the trains safe on the lines.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19There's many trains and many passengers

0:04:19 > 0:04:24and they all have to be kept safe. That's why a railway needs signals.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27What other signals do you know, Lucy?

0:04:27 > 0:04:30There's a traffic light with a green and a red man.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34When it's on the green man, it goes beep, beep, beep.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Then people can walk across and the cars stop.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41That's safe to cross the road. Very good.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43What do these levers do?

0:04:43 > 0:04:47Signals are just like traffic lights for trains instead of cars.

0:04:47 > 0:04:52- You see this signal, 2-2, 22?- Yes. - We'll pull that lever.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54You help me pull the lever.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58And as the lever comes out, it pulls the signal down.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Like that.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04And we can see the signal there up the line

0:05:04 > 0:05:07that's ready for the train to come.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12It lets the train driver know when it's safe to go.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Wa-hey! The train has arrived.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25But it's not reached its destination yet.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It's heading for Grandma's very special cafe.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31But Lucy's got a lot to learn before it leaves.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35Lucy, I used to do lots of different jobs on the railway

0:05:35 > 0:05:38and one of them was to be a guard.

0:05:38 > 0:05:44When you're a guard on the trains, you need a flag, a bag and a whistle.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48What you need to do is check up and down the train,

0:05:48 > 0:05:52click the tickets, make sure everybody's on safely.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Gosh, that's a lot to remember, Lucy.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58What was it? Tickets first.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Make sure everyone is safely on board.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Now it's time for the whistle and the flag.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Over to you, Lucy.

0:06:08 > 0:06:14- Tickets, please, are you going to Grandma's cafe?- Yes, please.

0:06:15 > 0:06:20- Tickets, please, are you going to Grandma's cafe?- I am, thank you.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25- Tickets, please, are you going to Grandma's cafe?- Yes, I am.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29- Thank you.- Tickets, please, are you going to Grandma's cafe?

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I certainly am. Thank you.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34All aboard!

0:06:37 > 0:06:40TRAIN WHISTLES

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Well done, Lucy, you did it!

0:06:48 > 0:06:53Lucy is very lucky that her grandad Trevor is in charge of the trains

0:06:53 > 0:06:57and allows her to sit up front to see what's going on.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Do you want to blow the whistle?

0:07:03 > 0:07:04WHISTLE BLOWS

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Yeah!

0:07:06 > 0:07:10Just like everywhere else, accidents can happen on trains.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13So be careful when you're around them.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Remember, steam is created by the fire which helps drive the engine.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I was always fascinated by steam trains.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32So I was very lucky to grow up to be able to drive a steam train.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36This steam is exactly the same as the clouds.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Grandad's going to blow the whistle now.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41WHISTLE BLOWS

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Look at the lambs running away.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Oh, wow, look at the big horse!

0:07:52 > 0:07:57There's so much to see when you're out and about on a steam train.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02I see an old quarry, where they used to get the stone from.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- There's owls living there. - They only come out at night.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12That's right, owls come out at night.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15They are supposed to do too-wit, too-woo!

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Too-wit, too-woo!

0:08:29 > 0:08:32A well-deserved break for train driver Trevor

0:08:32 > 0:08:35and his new recruit Lucy.

0:08:39 > 0:08:44Another very special person to Lucy, who works on the railway,

0:08:44 > 0:08:46is her grandma Ruth.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52This is my grandma.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00Lucy's grandma Ruth runs the cafe at the end of the line.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Hello, Trevor. Hello, Lucy. What can I get you today?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Can I have a hot chocolate, please?

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- Would you like marshmallows and cream?- Yes, please.

0:09:15 > 0:09:20Lucy loves coming to Grandma's cafe to get her favourite drink.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21Mmm!

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Lots of delicious hot chocolate.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Mmm! Cream.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33And marshmallows - delicious!

0:09:33 > 0:09:36- There we are.- Thank you. - Thank you very much.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45So, Lucy, are you going to drink your grandma's hot chocolate?

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- Yes.- Go on, then.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52I bet that's good.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54You look just like me - you've got a moustache!

0:09:56 > 0:10:01And you've got cream on your nose end. Lick it all off, that's it.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06LUCY LAUGHS

0:10:10 > 0:10:16Oh, no! Dirty Grandad - he's spilt all down his uniform.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25So, how do you turn a train around when it reaches the end of the line?

0:10:32 > 0:10:37Well, Lucy, we've had our hot chocolate in Grandma's cafe,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40but we've got to go back to Ravenglass now.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43But the engine's the wrong way round. What shall we do?

0:10:43 > 0:10:46We could put the train on the turntable

0:10:46 > 0:10:49and turn it around until it gets to the right track.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53Right, but I don't think I'm strong enough to do that on my own.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57- I think we need some help, don't we?- Yes.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Who's going to help us turn the engine, Lucy? Um...

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Shall we shout your brother?- Yes. - One, two, three...

0:11:05 > 0:11:07BOTH: Will!

0:11:07 > 0:11:09This is my big brother Will.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Give us a hand and push this engine round.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14You get on there, mate.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Are you ready?

0:11:16 > 0:11:18One, two, three...heave!

0:11:19 > 0:11:25- That's it.- Whoa! It's just like a toy train set.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Oh, that's hard work.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Keep pushing. Ready to go!

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Now the train's facing the right way,

0:11:45 > 0:11:49Grandad Trevor and Lucy can go back to the station.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56WHISTLE BLOWS

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Lucy loves doing that.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09Lucy wants to know why these trains are so special to Grandad Trevor.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15I always thought the trains here were great.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18I thought they were good because they were little,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21not as big as the big trains on the big railway,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24so I used to like riding on the engine

0:12:24 > 0:12:28cos they were all little engines and I really enjoyed it.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30And Lucy does, too.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37The journey is nearly over,

0:12:37 > 0:12:41but Grandad Trevor and Lucy have one more stop.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58- Have you had a fantastic time?- Yes, have you?- Yes, I really enjoyed it.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01What do you think of the jobs Grandad did on the railway?

0:13:01 > 0:13:05- Fantastic!- What's the best job you like to do?- Blow the whistle.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- Do you want to have a go at blowing the whistle one last time?- Yes.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11OK, come on.
