0:00:21 > 0:00:25This story belongs to Chloe and her Granny Gill.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37It's a tiny tale about Granny Gill's life
0:00:37 > 0:00:40and the things she used to do and still does today.
0:00:42 > 0:00:46Now it's time for Granny Gill to share her memories
0:00:46 > 0:00:49and take Chloe on a journey of discovery.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58Granny Gill runs a riding school.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00And here it is.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05What are they doing? Let's find out.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Ah, they're in the tack room.
0:01:08 > 0:01:13This is a special room where horses' saddles are kept.
0:01:13 > 0:01:17Chloe, you're making a really good job of cleaning that saddle.
0:01:17 > 0:01:18- Granny?- Yes.
0:01:18 > 0:01:22Why does this one have a handle and that one doesn't?
0:01:22 > 0:01:26Ah, well, Chloe, you know how a saddle sits on a pony's back
0:01:26 > 0:01:28so that the rider can stay on the pony?
0:01:28 > 0:01:29Yes.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32Long ago, this was one of the first special saddles
0:01:32 > 0:01:37that we bought because sometimes our riders need special care
0:01:37 > 0:01:41because some of them find it difficult to sit upright on the pony.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44The riding school is very special
0:01:44 > 0:01:48because it allows everyone to ride on a pony.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52- Can you see how it makes it easier to hold on to the handle?- Yes.
0:01:52 > 0:01:56Well, that's why we have that special saddle.
0:02:04 > 0:02:09And then they went for a ride to talk some more.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13Granny Gill told Chloe stories all about when she was younger.
0:02:13 > 0:02:16Look, there she is as a baby.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19And that's Granny Gill with her big sister and grandpa.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Nice jodhpurs!
0:02:21 > 0:02:25These are special trousers to wear when horse riding.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28When I was little I used to ride ponies sometimes
0:02:28 > 0:02:32and I enjoyed it very much, but my sister was better at it,
0:02:32 > 0:02:37and she was braver than I was and so she had her own horse.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41I used to help her with her horse and I used to ride.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Granny Gill got married and moved to the family farm.
0:02:44 > 0:02:49It was there that the idea of a riding school began.
0:02:49 > 0:02:53The main reason why it was good here was we've got lots of space.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56We can ride down through the woods
0:02:56 > 0:02:58and at the beginning that's what
0:02:58 > 0:02:59we did all the time,
0:02:59 > 0:03:03we rode outside because we didn't have a roof over our heads,
0:03:03 > 0:03:07so we only rode when the weather was good enough.
0:03:07 > 0:03:11Granny Gill decided the riding school needed indoor space
0:03:11 > 0:03:16for people to enjoy her ponies all year round, no matter the weather.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19With a lot of help from friends of the school,
0:03:19 > 0:03:22they raised money to build an indoor centre,
0:03:22 > 0:03:24and look, here it is.
0:03:24 > 0:03:29And you know what? A real princess opened the new indoor centre.
0:03:29 > 0:03:33Here's Princess Anne, she's the Queen's daughter,
0:03:33 > 0:03:35sitting right beside Granny Gill.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Do you like Smarty?
0:03:38 > 0:03:41Yeah, I like Smarty.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43This is fun.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46What a nice way to catch up with your granny.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Oh, yeah, no wind.
0:03:48 > 0:03:50No wind, so no windmill, oh, no.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Now it's time to meet some of the ponies.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05Shall we go and see if the ponies are ready for RDA?
0:04:05 > 0:04:06- Yes.- OK.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09Who's in here?
0:04:10 > 0:04:14BOTH: This is Bryony!
0:04:14 > 0:04:17BOTH: This is Kishmul!
0:04:17 > 0:04:21Granny Gill, what's this thing up on his forehead?
0:04:21 > 0:04:27- That's a long service medal, Chloe. He's been here for 19 years.- Wow.
0:04:27 > 0:04:31- How old is he? - He's 26 years old now.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35- He is lovely, isn't he?- Yes.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39Don't dribble on my fingers.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42- Have you got it?- It's in his mouth.
0:04:50 > 0:04:52Now it's time to meet one of the riders.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57Good boy, Hjarrandi.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Kirsten has been enjoying riding ponies
0:05:00 > 0:05:03at Granny Gill's riding school for a long time.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Chloe, this is Kirsten. Kirsten, this is Chloe.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08Hello, Chloe.
0:05:08 > 0:05:10Hello, Kirsten.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13How long have you been riding here?
0:05:13 > 0:05:15I've been riding 20 years.
0:05:15 > 0:05:16Wow.
0:05:16 > 0:05:18Which is your favourite horse?
0:05:18 > 0:05:22My favourite horse is Hjarrandi.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24My favourite horse is Hjarrandi, too.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27And here's Hjarrandi.
0:05:27 > 0:05:31He's a gentle pony that everyone loves.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46So, where are Granny Gill and Chloe off to now?
0:05:46 > 0:05:50They're meeting a man who makes special shoes for horses.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52He's called a farrier.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59Now, Chloe, another very important part of running a riding school
0:05:59 > 0:06:01is looking after the horses' feet
0:06:01 > 0:06:05and so we have to put new shoes on every eight weeks.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08That is a horse's shoe.
0:06:08 > 0:06:12We'll ask Alistair to put new shoes on your horse. All right?
0:06:12 > 0:06:13OK.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18Farriers have been a part of farm life for years and years.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21Ponies have worn shoes on their feet for a long time,
0:06:21 > 0:06:25for the same reason that we wear shoes.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27They protect the pony's feet from the ground.
0:06:27 > 0:06:32The pony's hoof is just like the nails on our hands and toes,
0:06:32 > 0:06:34except it's bigger and thicker.
0:06:34 > 0:06:39Although the farrier uses a fire to make the shoes into shape
0:06:39 > 0:06:42and has some very big hammers and nails,
0:06:42 > 0:06:46the ponies are happy to get their new shoes.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48It doesn't hurt them at all.
0:06:58 > 0:07:04Horses and ponies have been used to help people for years and years.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08They used to help farmers in the fields and pull carriages
0:07:08 > 0:07:12and take folk wherever they wanted to go before there were cars.
0:07:12 > 0:07:16Ponies and horses were used because they were strong.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18Nowadays most people ride for fun.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22Granny Gill's ponies are used for another reason.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25They help children and adults who find it hard to sit or stand up
0:07:25 > 0:07:30to get stronger, and of course, to have lots of fun.
0:07:39 > 0:07:43Granny Gill and Chloe are getting Hjarrandi ready
0:07:43 > 0:07:46for children coming for pony rides.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48You pass me the saddle, thanks.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50Ooh, it's a bit heavy, isn't it?
0:07:50 > 0:07:53- Yes.- Well done.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Up we go. Ooh!
0:07:55 > 0:07:59The saddle makes it nice and comfy to sit on the pony's back.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03It also helps you stay on the pony, so you don't fall off.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06The bridle goes over the pony's head and is used
0:08:06 > 0:08:12so that the person riding the pony can tell the pony which way to go.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Well done, Chloe. So our horse is ready for the lesson.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Some ponies and horses get scared if they hear noises,
0:08:21 > 0:08:24- or if somebody waves their arms about.- Yes.
0:08:24 > 0:08:29These ponies of ours are special and they have to stay relaxed and calm.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32Would you say that he was a very well-behaved pony?
0:08:32 > 0:08:36Yes. Very well.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39Well, in that case, I think he's the right pony for us,
0:08:39 > 0:08:43- and he'll be very good to use in our lesson.- Yes.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50There you are, round the corner. Off we go!
0:08:58 > 0:09:04It's now time for Chloe to help her granny with her pony class.
0:09:04 > 0:09:08Granny Gill has lots of people to help her in her riding class.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10They're called volunteers.
0:09:10 > 0:09:15A volunteer is someone who gives up their time to help others.
0:09:15 > 0:09:20Granny Gill has a great way to teach pony riders to keep their balance.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23One, two, three. Everybody walk on.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28Who's catching the raindrops for me?
0:09:28 > 0:09:30Ooh! OK.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Guess what's happening...
0:09:32 > 0:09:35Hands in the air, everyone!
0:09:35 > 0:09:38Heather's going to do the bear hunt.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42We're going on a bear hunt!
0:09:42 > 0:09:44And Chloe is joining in the fun.
0:09:44 > 0:09:48We're going to catch a big one!
0:09:48 > 0:09:50I'm not scared!
0:09:52 > 0:09:55It's a beautiful day!
0:09:55 > 0:09:59Granny Gill's riding school gives everyone the chance to have a
0:09:59 > 0:10:02wonderful time riding a pony.
0:10:02 > 0:10:06The birds are singing!
0:10:32 > 0:10:36The lesson is over. But there's still one job to do, Chloe.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39Can you guess what it is?
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Do you know it was in this field that the horse riding school
0:10:44 > 0:10:50started all those years ago, and we had eight riders then?
0:10:50 > 0:10:53Guess how many riders we have now?
0:10:53 > 0:10:5420.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56We have nearly 200.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58No way!
0:10:58 > 0:11:03Oh, look, there's the indoor school where the pony lessons take place.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06But the ponies still get to graze in the fields
0:11:06 > 0:11:09and where there's ponies, there is something else.
0:11:09 > 0:11:13But we still use this field. What do you think we use it for?
0:11:13 > 0:11:16- Looking after horses?- Exactly.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20We have to look after the ponies and keep the field clean.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23- It doesn't look very clean, does it? - No.
