0:00:20 > 0:00:23This story belongs to Joe
0:00:23 > 0:00:25and his Grandad Stoker.
0:00:33 > 0:00:39It's a tiny tale about Grandad Stoker and the things he used to do.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42And still does now on the farm.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49Now it's time for Grandad Stoker to share his memories
0:00:49 > 0:00:53and take Joe on a journey of discovery.
0:00:58 > 0:01:03Let's find out what Grandad Stoker and Joe are doing on the farm.
0:01:11 > 0:01:16- Are these your sheep, Farmer Joe? - Yeah.- And these cows?- Yeah.
0:01:16 > 0:01:20- So where's the little lambs? - They're there.- All right.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23What you need is a crook like mine.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27- What is that, Grandad?- This is the crook I got from my grandfather
0:01:27 > 0:01:32when I was a little boy, just like you. I'd go out in the field
0:01:32 > 0:01:36and catch them with this crook. What job do you think a farmer does?
0:01:36 > 0:01:39- Erm, he feeds the animals. - Aye. What else does he do?
0:01:39 > 0:01:42- He puts the animals in the shed. - Uh-huh.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46Grandad, have you always lived on the farm?
0:01:46 > 0:01:51Yes, I was born on this farm and I've always worked here.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55Grandad Stoker lived on the farm with his three brothers.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01The family farm was really big and had lots of animals.
0:02:01 > 0:02:06He especially loved his horse, Kevin.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08And his dog, called Pep.
0:02:11 > 0:02:16- Will you work on the farm with your dad when you get older?- Yeah.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19They talked for a while about long ago,
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and went for a walk to find out more.
0:02:26 > 0:02:31If Joe wants to be a farmer there's lots to learn from Grandad Stoker.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41Grandad, did you want to be a farmer when you were a little boy?
0:02:41 > 0:02:46Actually, Joe, no, I wanted to be a schoolteacher.
0:02:46 > 0:02:50But then my father was old and he wanted me to come back
0:02:50 > 0:02:51and work on the farm.
0:02:51 > 0:02:56So I came back and worked on the farm and I really enjoyed it.
0:03:01 > 0:03:06When Grandad Stoker's dad was a farmer, things were very different.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Look at these pictures of farm life a long time ago.
0:03:09 > 0:03:16In the olden days, horses would pull the plough through the fields,
0:03:16 > 0:03:19rather than the tractors the farmers use today.
0:03:21 > 0:03:24It was really hard work working on the farm
0:03:24 > 0:03:28because everything had to be done by hand.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34But it looks like fun, too.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37But not everything has changed.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41They still use shepherds' crooks.
0:03:43 > 0:03:47And they still have the same kinds of animals.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49They have sheep...
0:03:52 > 0:03:54..and cows...
0:03:54 > 0:03:57and sheepdogs to help the farmer.
0:04:04 > 0:04:09Grandad Stoker is taking Joe to learn all about the sheep.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16These sheep are mummy sheep.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19They're going to be having lambs soon.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25Here we are in the sheep shed.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34This is the crook I showed you earlier. I got this from my grandad.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38- This is what I use to catch the little lambs if they run away.- Hmm.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41- How many sheep do you think are in here?- 33, I think.- 33?
0:04:41 > 0:04:45Yeah, there would be about that and they'll all have little lambs,
0:04:45 > 0:04:48- won't they?- Yeah.- Then we'll take the ewes and lambs
0:04:48 > 0:04:51and put them in a pen by themselves.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Will we go across and have a look at the lambs?- Yes.
0:04:59 > 0:05:03Joe is very lucky. He's about to see a lamb being born.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12Wow! A new baby lamb.
0:05:14 > 0:05:15That's it.
0:05:15 > 0:05:16BAAAA!
0:05:16 > 0:05:19A new lamb born.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21- Did you like that?- Yeah.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25Will we go and have a look at these lambs in this pen, Joe?
0:05:25 > 0:05:26Yeah, that one.
0:05:30 > 0:05:34Look how cute and cuddly the little lamb is.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40- Why's it going back out? - Here you go.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43Do you want to stroke him?
0:05:43 > 0:05:46He won't bite, you know. That's better.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50That's what you want. What do you think we'll call this one?
0:05:50 > 0:05:54- Shaun.- Shaun the sheep! How old do you think he'll be?
0:05:54 > 0:05:58- 35.- 35, no, no.- I think he will.- All right.
0:05:58 > 0:06:03Do you think he's getting frightened? We'll put him back with his mum.
0:06:03 > 0:06:04There you go.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13I wonder what other animals Grandad Stoker has on the farm?
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Now Grandad Stoker and Joe are off to feed the cows.
0:06:27 > 0:06:31When I was little and I used to help my father to feed the cows
0:06:31 > 0:06:35we had all this here to fork into the troughs for the cows.
0:06:35 > 0:06:39- Do you want to put some hay in the trough?- Uh-huh.
0:06:39 > 0:06:43- Do you like feeding cows, Grandad? - Oh, yeah, I like feeding the cows.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45Do you like being a farmer?
0:06:45 > 0:06:47Of course, that's what I've done all my life.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50You put that bit in further down, that's it.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53Look, Joe is very strong.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57- There you go.- Do you have big muscles for this, Grandad?
0:06:57 > 0:07:01When we were young we had big muscles cos we had to put it up there.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04It was hard. You had to have big muscles then
0:07:04 > 0:07:06but now we use bright, new, shiny tractors.
0:07:06 > 0:07:10The cows get fed with big machines. For the rest of the bale
0:07:10 > 0:07:14I just forked it and put it into the trough like that.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16- All of it in?- Yeah, put it in here.
0:07:16 > 0:07:21There you go. So we let the cows in now to get their dinner, Joe.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24MOOING See?
0:07:24 > 0:07:29In the olden days, it took a lot of hard work to feed the cows.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32They're big cows. They're getting their dinner.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37- He's going in that one.- Uh-huh.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41- They'll not touch you, like.- Uh-oh.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43It's someone else's turn.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45MOOING
0:07:47 > 0:07:50When I started on the farm,
0:07:50 > 0:07:53life was a lot different to what it is now.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57It took all morning to feed the cows.
0:07:57 > 0:08:02Now we feed them with big machines and it's a lot easier to feed them.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06Ah, that's clever. The machine mixes up all the food inside
0:08:06 > 0:08:10and then puts it into the trough for the cows to eat.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Not like when Grandad Stoker was young.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19He had to use a big fork.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23Really, the work took all day to feed cows
0:08:23 > 0:08:26when now one man can do it in half the time.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30It's so much quicker with the machine.
0:08:38 > 0:08:43Grandad Stoker's got pictures of the farm when he was very young.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45And he wants to tell Joe all about it.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52My grandfather came to this farm a long, long time ago.
0:08:52 > 0:08:54My father farmed it after him.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57It's Grandad Stoker's dad.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01Then I farmed it after my father.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05And there's Grandad Stoker when he was younger.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10With new machinery we can feed those animals far easier than we used to.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15So life on the farm has gone from a very difficult life
0:09:15 > 0:09:19which it used to be, to really quite an easy life now.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27These machines are great.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29And Joe wants to know more about tractors.
0:09:35 > 0:09:40- How old is this tractor, Grandad? - It's 40 years old, I used to use this
0:09:40 > 0:09:42when I was a young man, about 20.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45This is the little tractor we used to use in the summer
0:09:45 > 0:09:48to load the grass up before we baled it.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51And this is us loading bales up onto the trailer.
0:09:51 > 0:09:56You see, it's got no cab on so you were outside in the sun.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59It still works here, it works every day here.
0:09:59 > 0:10:04- Do you want to have a sit on the seat?- Uh-huh.- Come here.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06You get up on there.
0:10:09 > 0:10:10There you go.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14What's your favourite tractor, Grandad?
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Well, this is the one I've had the longest, this is the favourite one.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21Shall we go round the corner and see what it can do?
0:10:23 > 0:10:24This is my daddy.
0:10:24 > 0:10:29Joe's daddy, Paul, is using the old red tractor on the farm.
0:10:40 > 0:10:44The old red tractor is perfect for cleaning the yard.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57It's amazing to think they've been using this tractor
0:10:57 > 0:10:59on the farm for so long.
0:11:09 > 0:11:14Now Grandad Stoker and Joe are going to look at the new tractor.
0:11:16 > 0:11:21Joe, you know when we had a look at the little, old, red tractor,
0:11:21 > 0:11:23- my favourite tractor?- Yes.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27This is a brand new tractor. What's different with this one?
0:11:27 > 0:11:31- It has big wheels.- Big wheels and what colour is it?- Blue.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34- Would you like to sit in it?- YEAH!
0:11:34 > 0:11:36- Good lad.- Please.- Oh!
0:11:37 > 0:11:38Up you go.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44- Are you going to sit in the driver's seat?- Yes.- Oh!
0:11:44 > 0:11:50- So which one do you prefer, Joe? The little one or this one?- This one.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53- This one? Why? - Because it's just big.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57- It's big, and what do you call this one?- Big Blue.- Big Blue?
0:11:57 > 0:12:00All right. I think I like the little old one, me, best.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03So we're going to go and watch your daddy in it?
0:12:03 > 0:12:07The blue tractor is Daddy Paul's favourite tractor, too.
0:12:10 > 0:12:11JOE CHUCKLES
0:12:21 > 0:12:25The big blue tractor is working hard on the farm.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34It would be very difficult to do this work without the tractor.
0:12:39 > 0:12:43Grandad Stoker has shared lots of stories about the farm.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46And we've learned so much.
0:12:50 > 0:12:53Thank you, Grandad, for a lovely day.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57- Have you enjoyed it?- Yes. - Joe saw a little lamb being born.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01He learned how they fed cows in the olden days.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03And he got to sit on the tractors.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06- What was your favourite bit? - The shepherd's crook.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09So do you think when you're big Grandad should give you
0:13:09 > 0:13:12- a shepherd's crook?- Yeah. - And will you work on the farm?- Yeah.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Oh, we've had a lovely time, haven't we?- Yeah.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18- Give us a cuddle. Is that all right?- Yeah.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21What a fabulous heap of fun.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25That was Joe and Grandad Stoker's tiny tale about the things
0:13:25 > 0:13:28Grandad Stoker used to do and the fun he had,
0:13:28 > 0:13:31and why he's got a shepherd's crook.
