0:01:20 > 0:01:23A lighthouse is a tall building with a light on top of it.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26The light, at night, lets sailors know

0:01:26 > 0:01:29that they might be sailing too close to land,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32or dangerous rocks hidden in the sea.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36There are nearly 300 lighthouses around the coast of Britain.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Have you seen one?

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Grandad Billy and David are playing a card game in the kitchen.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46and Grandad Billy is taking him to visit the small island

0:02:46 > 0:02:48he lives and worked on.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53If a lighthouse is out at sea,

0:02:53 > 0:02:57people have to get there by helicopter or boat.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00They have to be lowered down by ropes onto the lighthouse

0:03:00 > 0:03:03or the rocks beside it.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08Ah, there it is - Grandad Billy's lighthouse!

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The building with white stripes.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16It's time to land the plane and explore the lighthouse.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37Grandad Billy and David talk about being a lighthouse keeper.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Well, David, I have been a lighthouse keeper for many years.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I've lived here all my life,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45and as a young boy growing up on the island,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49I watched the lighthouse tower above the island,

0:03:49 > 0:03:53and I eventually became a keeper here at this lighthouse.

0:03:53 > 0:03:58It's one of the oldest working lighthouses in Scotland,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01and Grandad Billy has worked in it for many, many years.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- So this is the lighthouse flag, David.- Oh.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22- It used to be raised every morning at nine o'clock.- OK.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26- And would you like to help me raise it?- Yes, Grandad.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30There we go.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Pull!

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Well done.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36The flag is raised

0:04:36 > 0:04:39when very important people come to visit the lighthouse,

0:04:39 > 0:04:43and today the flag has been raised because David is visiting!

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It's time for Grandad Billy and David

0:04:47 > 0:04:50to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55It's very tall!

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I wonder how many stairs there are.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59..174...

0:04:59 > 0:05:01175...

0:05:01 > 0:05:04176...

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Phew!

0:05:06 > 0:05:08176 stairs...!

0:05:08 > 0:05:10That is a long way up!

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Right, David, you see out there?

0:05:16 > 0:05:17See the skerry?

0:05:17 > 0:05:21That's where there's been many a shipwreck over the years.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Lots of them.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Well, David, your great-grandfather

0:05:27 > 0:05:31was on one of the boats that crashed onto the rocks

0:05:31 > 0:05:33away out in the bay there,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36and he jumped overboard for safety.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39And this is a photo of the actual ship he was on...

0:05:39 > 0:05:41sinking.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43It was in big trouble.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47But don't worry, David's great- grandfather was quickly rescued

0:05:47 > 0:05:49and was taken to safety.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53I wonder what else they can see from the top of the lighthouse.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Can you see anything out here?

0:05:58 > 0:06:00What are these things bobbing in the sea?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04I can see seals.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06- Seals?- Seals.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Seals, a way out there.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Beautiful seals.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14What do you see away out here?

0:06:14 > 0:06:16- Where?- Away out here?

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- A ship.- That's right.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26That's a big ship.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29Will that ship see our lighthouse, David, do you think?

0:06:29 > 0:06:31- Yes.- Yes, that's good.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47So, now we are thinking about winding up the machine here.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52And that's what the light-keepers had to do to keep the light turning.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54I will show you now how to wind it up.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59You have to be strong.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02There you go, there you go.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Heavy, isn't it?

0:07:07 > 0:07:09I think that'll do for the moment.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Look at this old film of a lighthouse keeper

0:07:12 > 0:07:16winding up the machine in the same lighthouse as Grandad Billy's.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21And the lighthouse keeper has to wind the machine every hour.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25Imagine running up those 176 stairs every hour!

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Lighthouse keepers must have been really fit.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31This is how we do it nowadays.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34We don't have to wind the light any more.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37We just have to push this green button.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- So, would you like to help me push this button?- Mm-hm.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44Right, away you go. One, two, three!

0:07:44 > 0:07:45There it goes.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Let it go now. That's lovely.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Pushing the button turns on the machine,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54which makes the light turn.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Now it's time for Grandad Billy

0:08:06 > 0:08:09to show David where the light comes from.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17- So, David, do you see this lamp here? - Yes.

0:08:17 > 0:08:23- This was used to shine the light out. In the old days.- Oh.

0:08:23 > 0:08:29In the olden days, the lamp was lit using a liquid called paraffin.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32The paraffin was lit by a match.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35So what do you think they are?

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Light bulbs.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41They're giant light bulbs. Big ones.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47Nowadays, the giant light bulbs are lit using electricity,

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and come on automatically when it gets dark.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51How clever!

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Wow! Look how bright those lamps are!

0:09:11 > 0:09:14Look, some fog has appeared at the lighthouse.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18Do you think the sailors can still see the lighthouse through the fog?

0:09:18 > 0:09:20In the old days, when it got foggy,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23they used something very noisy -

0:09:23 > 0:09:25a fog horn.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- So, David, this is the fog horn.- OK.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35And when sailors couldn't see the light, when it was foggy,

0:09:35 > 0:09:37we sounded the fog horn.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39OK.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41So, would you like to do an impression of the fog horn?

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Yes, Grandad.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46ERRRRRRRRRRRRR!

0:09:46 > 0:09:48That's very good!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50- Can I do one now?- Yeah.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52ARRRRRRRRR!

0:09:52 > 0:09:54That's not so good.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- No.- Would you like to hear the real thing?- Yeah!

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Let's put these on, David.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Grandad Billy and David must put headphones on

0:10:01 > 0:10:04to protect their ears from what they are about to hear.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06So, let's hear the fog horn.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09One, two, three...

0:10:09 > 0:10:13VERY LOUD LONG BLAST

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- How loud was that, David? - Really loud.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Who do you think heard it?

0:10:19 > 0:10:20The whole island.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24The whole island, I think, indeed. Yes.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29So when the sailors couldn't see the light, they heard the fog horns

0:10:29 > 0:10:33which told them to keep away from the dangerous rocks.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- We had good fun.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Grandad Billy wants to show David some treasure he collected

0:10:54 > 0:10:58from boats that were shipwrecked many years ago.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Look, they're sitting next to an old shipwreck

0:11:00 > 0:11:03that's been washed ashore.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06I wonder what hidden treasures David will find.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Look at this, David, this is treasure.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Whoa, that's really shiny.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14- See the lovely gold coin in the middle?- Yeah.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18- That's treasure. Real treasure.- OK.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24- Would you like to have a lucky dip in the chest?- Yes, Grandad.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I'll help you to open it. Whoops...!

0:11:30 > 0:11:34What is this, David?

0:11:34 > 0:11:36I think it's a whale's tooth.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- It looks very old to me.- Yeah.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- And that was washed ashore on the beach, too.- OK.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Very exciting.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50This looks like a golden spoon.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Oh, yes. That's a golden spoon

0:11:53 > 0:11:55that was washed ashore here

0:11:55 > 0:11:57a long time ago.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59OK.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06So, all this treasure was found on the island near the lighthouse.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15So, David did you have fun?

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Yes! Lots of fun.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20We played cards.

0:12:20 > 0:12:21Snap!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26We went on a tiny aeroplane.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30We raised a flag.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Well done!

0:12:32 > 0:12:35We looked in the light room.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- What do you think they are? - Light bulbs.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41We looked for seals.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- Seals.- Seals, a way out there.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47We heard the fog horn.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49One, two, three...

0:12:49 > 0:12:51LOUD BLAST

0:12:55 > 0:12:58We looked at old treasure.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01This looks like a golden spoon.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03What have you enjoyed the most?

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Raising the flag!

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Because it's really important.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11Would you like to give me a really big hug now?

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- Yes, Grandad.- Come on, then.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21What a fabulous heap of fun!

0:13:21 > 0:13:24That was David and Grandad Billy's tiny tale

0:13:24 > 0:13:26about being a lighthouse keeper.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Now Grandad Billy has shared his story with David,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33it's time for David to start his very own story.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Do you know someone with a story to share?
