0:01:08 > 0:01:13Grandad Alan lives in an exciting place and has a very special job

0:01:15 > 0:01:19The Tower of London is a big castle near the River Thames

0:01:19 > 0:01:22and it was built many, many years ago.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28You know, darling, we're actually staying where I live

0:01:28 > 0:01:30in the Tower of London.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37And do you know what they call us?

0:01:38 > 0:01:40They call us Beefeaters.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Why are you called a Beefeater, Grandad?

0:01:43 > 0:01:46We don't really know where the name Beefeater comes from,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49it may be in the old days that we were given beef to eat.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51It's just really a nickname.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55- So what nickname does Grandad call you?- Pickle!

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Wow! Grandad Alan is a Beefeater!

0:02:02 > 0:02:06And he tells Leah more about what a Beefeater does.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14And my job as a Beefeater

0:02:14 > 0:02:18is to protect the Queen when she visits the Tower.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I also have to protect the Tower of London itself,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24I have the protect the castle.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28And, of course, we have to look after all the jewels,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31the Crown Jewels that are kept inside the Tower.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33What a very important job Grandad Alan

0:02:33 > 0:02:36has protecting all of those valuable things!

0:02:36 > 0:02:40"Protect" means to keep something safe.

0:02:40 > 0:02:45So, Leah, Grandad was in the Army for 25 years.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47To become a Beefeater,

0:02:47 > 0:02:52you have to have been in the military for a minimum of 22 years.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55You also have to have a very special medal,

0:02:55 > 0:03:01a medal that's awarded to us after 18 years of good loyal service.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05And thirdly, you have to have reached the rank of sergeant major.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12My main job...as a Beefeater is to give guided tours

0:03:12 > 0:03:15to the very many millions of visitors

0:03:15 > 0:03:17that come to the Tower of London each year.

0:03:17 > 0:03:22I also have to tell many stories about the Tower of London.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24The Tower of London is also called Her Majesty's

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Royal Palace and Fortress.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30And in the olden days it was used for many things.

0:03:30 > 0:03:31Kings and queens lived there

0:03:31 > 0:03:35and naughty people were also locked up in prison there.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41What an amazing place to visit!

0:03:41 > 0:03:46Now Grandad Alan is tellingly Leah all about his special uniform.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51So these letters mean Elizabeth Regina, which means Queen Elizabeth,

0:03:51 > 0:03:53which is our Queen.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56And I'm wearing a very special uniform today

0:03:56 > 0:04:00- and I've got a special hat on. Would you like try my hat on?- Yeah.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01Grandma Pat also works at the Tower of London, like Grandad Alan.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Grandma Pat's job is to look after the Crown Jewels

0:05:04 > 0:05:07and all of the Queen's valuable items.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Grandma Pat makes sure they're kept safe

0:05:10 > 0:05:12and helps to clean and move them when needed.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16She also tells tourists information about the Crown Jewels.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19The Crown Jewels are a big collection

0:05:19 > 0:05:22of shiny and sparkly rings, necklaces,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25crowns and lots of other very, very old things.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32This is a picture of one of the crowns from the collection

0:05:32 > 0:05:35travelling to a special ceremony which the Queen will be at.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Beefeaters bring in the crown.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42And here is Her Majesty wearing it.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47All of the jewels are locked up and kept safe by the Beefeaters,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50because they cost lots and lots of money.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59The Tower of London is also the home to some pretend metal animals.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03But a long, long time ago real wild animals used to live her.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12- Can you see up there? What's that? - An elephant.- Yes!

0:06:12 > 0:06:15An elephant. What does an elephant do?

0:06:19 > 0:06:21And a slippery snake?

0:06:25 > 0:06:28All kinds of animals were here at the Tower,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31we had lions, tigers, bears.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38All of these animals were brought into the Tower

0:06:38 > 0:06:41by various very important people.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44And they were given to the kings and queens as presents.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48And then they were taken to Regents Park

0:06:48 > 0:06:51to where we know today to be London Zoo.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55One of the kings who used to live here was this man,

0:06:55 > 0:06:59King George III, he was given a grizzly bear named Martin

0:06:59 > 0:07:02as a gift many, many years ago.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06And this is what Martin the grizzly bear would have looked that.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- Are we going to say bye-bye to the elephant?- Bye-bye.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- Bye-bye, Mr Elephant.- Lift me up. - Pull Grandad up first.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- Thank you very much.- And now...- And now. He grounds.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30All of the wild exotic animals have long gone,

0:07:54 > 0:07:58Grandad Alan and Leah are going to feed one of the ravens

0:08:00 > 0:08:04- Put it by the perch. Quick. Here she comes look.- What here?- Yeah.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Here we are, right by the side of the White Tower

0:09:22 > 0:09:25and can you see the really big hole up there?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Do you know what it was used for? Can you guess?

0:09:30 > 0:09:35- A toilet.- A toilet. Very good! Yes, it was.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39People's poo used to flush out through this hole.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44I'm glad we have nice clean toilets these days.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54And you know why we're here, darling,

0:09:54 > 0:09:57because we have to think of a secret password,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00a password which we used to give out in the olden days

0:10:00 > 0:10:03when very important people came to the Tower.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Grandad Alan and Leah are waiting for some soldiers to come

0:10:44 > 0:10:48is one of Grandad Alan's jobs as the Chief Beefeater.

0:10:48 > 0:10:53And Grandad Alan has allowed Leah to do this very special job today.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Every couple of hours the soldiers

0:11:00 > 0:11:03swap over their job of guarding the Tower.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Grandad Alan and Leah are watching them change over.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17This swapping of the guards has been happening here for many, many years.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Don't the soldiers look very smart.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26That's a new one. That's the old one going away.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30And what we have to do, we have to wave goodbye to them from the gate.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35- Ready? Ready to wave goodbye? Bye-bye.- Goodbye.- Goodbye. Bye-bye.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- Is that the old one?- No, he's the new soldier.- Yeah.- There we go.
