0:03:52 > 0:03:55Look at those waves!

0:03:55 > 0:03:59This beach is special to Uncle Wayne for another reason, too.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01When I was about 11 years old

0:04:01 > 0:04:02my father brought me here

0:04:02 > 0:04:05and I went in a surfing competition.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07My very first surfing competition.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09What did you have to do in the surfing competition?

0:04:09 > 0:04:12Well, you have to paddle out into the surf

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and ride waves to the shore,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17and whoever rides the waves the best

0:04:17 > 0:04:19gets to go through to the next heat.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Uncle Wayne went on to enter lots more surfing competitions

0:04:22 > 0:04:24as he got older,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26and started winning trophies.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29He learned how to surf bigger and bigger waves

0:04:29 > 0:04:33and travelled the world entering surfing competitions.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40I have won many trophies for surfing.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43My most special trophy was becoming

0:04:43 > 0:04:47World Long Board Champion in Japan.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Wow! It must be brilliant being a world champion.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56Hey, Uncle Wayne, will I be able to jump on a surfboard?

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Yeah, let's try that. That'd be fun!

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Cool. A surfboard made from sand!

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Yeah, you're on a wave now! Off you go!

0:05:07 > 0:05:08Wooooh...!

0:05:10 > 0:05:15Uncle Wayne doesn't just make surfboards out of sand,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17he makes real ones, too.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Look at how brightly coloured they are.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Well, Kirra, this is Uncle Wayne's workshop.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26This is where we make all sorts of boards.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29We make long boards, and short boards.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Why are all the boards different sizes?

0:05:31 > 0:05:35Well, people have different sized boards for different sized waves.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38We make long boards for when the waves are small,

0:05:38 > 0:05:42so people can have lots of fun.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Then the boards get shorter,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46so we can do lots of tricks.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Surfboards have changed a lot over the years.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55They used to be made from solid wood, which was very heavy.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57People learned, by using lighter materials,

0:05:57 > 0:06:01they could make the boards go faster.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03They also added fins like this,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06to help surfers control how they could move on the waves.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16Sometimes when I build surfboards we paint them and put designs on them.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Would you like to paint one of the surfboards?

0:06:19 > 0:06:22- Yeah, it'd be great fun. - Yeah.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25They are drawing their design onto the board first.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27What colour are we going to do the wave?

0:06:27 > 0:06:30- Blue would look nice. - OK.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Now, put it on inside your lines, and paint the board.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36That's a girl.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Good girl.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50OK, that'll do. How about that?

0:06:59 > 0:07:03What colour do you think we should paint the person, Kirra?

0:07:03 > 0:07:07- Green.- Wow, that'd look good, wouldn't it? There you go.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Kirra, you could come and paint boards with me any time you like.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Great!

0:07:16 > 0:07:18Nice board, Kirra. Looking good.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Now it's time for Kirra's surfing lesson.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34Look at the seagull.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43You know, when I was a young boy,

0:07:43 > 0:07:46surfing was a new sport in Australia.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48How did you know what to do?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50We'd watch other people ride the waves

0:07:50 > 0:07:52and try to do what they did.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54So, let's have a lesson.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57- What do you think, Kirra? - Yeah, it will be great fun.- OK!

0:07:58 > 0:08:01OK, Kirra, let's start this lesson.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04First, I'll show you where to lie on the board,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07then you can follow what I do, as I get back up. OK?

0:08:07 > 0:08:09So get down on the board.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12You lie on the board like that, OK?

0:08:14 > 0:08:16You ready? Get down... and we lie on the surfboard.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Put your hands on the rail

0:08:18 > 0:08:21and lie on the board like that. OK?

0:08:21 > 0:08:23How does that feel? Is that good?

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Maybe just go forward a bit more.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28So we paddle, we put our hands out from the surfboard

0:08:28 > 0:08:29and we paddle like that.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31When we're catching a wave,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34we put our hands on the rail there,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36and we stand up slowly like that.

0:08:36 > 0:08:41Put your back foot down, put your right foot down, and we stand up.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Whoa! How about that?

0:08:43 > 0:08:45We're on a wave now.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49And you ride the wave to the shore and then jump off like that!

0:08:49 > 0:08:50There you go!

0:08:52 > 0:08:57Well done, Kirra! You'll be surfing those waves in no time!

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Nowadays, people surf in lots of countries around the world

0:09:05 > 0:09:07including here in the UK.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14But people started surfing on the islands of Hawaii

0:09:14 > 0:09:16hundreds of years ago.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Hawaiian chiefs surfed big waves

0:09:19 > 0:09:21to prove how powerful they were.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Surfing was made popular in Australia by a Hawaiian

0:09:25 > 0:09:28called Duke Kahanamoku,

0:09:28 > 0:09:32who won gold medals for swimming at the Olympic Games.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35On a visit to Australia, Duke wanted to go surfing

0:09:35 > 0:09:38but not many people surfed there back then,

0:09:38 > 0:09:43so he made his own surfboard and showed people how to surf.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Soon lots of people in Australia knew how to surf

0:09:46 > 0:09:48and love doing it.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Just like Uncle Wayne.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Nowadays, some daring dogs even learn to surf, too!
