0:00:22 > 0:00:24This story belongs to Lucy
0:00:24 > 0:00:25and her Granny Cath.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39- This is fun, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42It's a tiny tale about how children like you
0:00:42 > 0:00:45lived in the olden days, over 200 years ago.
0:00:45 > 0:00:48- My boat's flying! This is really fun!- It is, isn't it?
0:00:48 > 0:00:50GRANNY LAUGHS Wa-hey.
0:00:52 > 0:00:57Now, it's time for Lucy and Granny Cath to go on a journey of discovery.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01They're going to find out what life was like all those years ago.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07- Ooh, what are you doing there? - I'm playing with cars.
0:01:07 > 0:01:09- Can I play?- Yes.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13Ooh, I've got a big truck, here. Where are you going with your car?
0:01:13 > 0:01:15- I'm going to the shops. - That's right.
0:01:15 > 0:01:20The big truck is going to the shop and it's taking food to the shop.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22Oh, good! I need some shopping!
0:01:22 > 0:01:28- Good. Do you know, 200 years ago, they didn't use trucks?- Why?
0:01:28 > 0:01:32- Because they hadn't been invented. - But how would they get food, though?
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Well, they used to use a horse and cart.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38But horses and carts wouldn't take very much,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40so then they used boats,
0:01:40 > 0:01:43special sorts of boats, called narrow boats,
0:01:43 > 0:01:46- to take goods around the country. - Wow!
0:01:46 > 0:01:48I know a story about a little girl
0:01:48 > 0:01:52called Alice who lived on one of these boats with her family.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55It was a very special boat and it was a very special time.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01This old film shows what life was like for Alice and her family,
0:02:01 > 0:02:04long ago, when people made everything by hand.
0:02:04 > 0:02:09Then some clever people invented machines to do those jobs quicker.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12Making things by machine is called industrial
0:02:12 > 0:02:17and this special time was called the Industrial Revolution.
0:02:17 > 0:02:18The machines were huge
0:02:18 > 0:02:22and had to be built in special buildings called factories.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24The factories were built near rivers,
0:02:24 > 0:02:28so that water could be used to make the machines work.
0:02:28 > 0:02:33It was SO long ago that electricity hadn't been discovered.
0:02:33 > 0:02:34It was a really busy time,
0:02:34 > 0:02:37when many things were being invented and built.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41The Industrial Revolution lasted for a really long time.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44What was it like, long ago?
0:02:44 > 0:02:47- Would you like to find out? - Yes, please.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51- Shall we dress up like Alice and her family?- That would be amazing!
0:02:53 > 0:02:56- I like your hat. - It's a boatwoman's bonnet.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59It keeps the sun and the rain off my head.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03I like the buttons on them and I like this part of the cape,
0:03:03 > 0:03:04and I like my bonnet.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06It's very smart, isn't it?
0:03:06 > 0:03:08Our clothes are very different!
0:03:08 > 0:03:11- Shall we do a twirl? - I think that's a good idea!
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Wow! Just look at Lucy and Granny Cath,
0:03:14 > 0:03:18dressed up in the same clothes people wore all those years ago.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24Now, they're ready for a big adventure, but where will they go?
0:03:27 > 0:03:32Granny Cath has brought Lucy to the National Waterway museum.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35Are we going to see big, long boats?
0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Yes, and we're going to go on a boat trip as well!- Yippee!
0:03:41 > 0:03:47Long ago, some clever people built special rivers called canals.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50The canals made it easy for the boats to travel on
0:03:50 > 0:03:54and it meant the boats could get from one place to another quicker.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57The canalboats were called narrow boats
0:03:57 > 0:04:00because they were long and narrow.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03They carried things to factories,
0:04:03 > 0:04:06like wool to make clothes and clay to make pots.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10Things carried on narrow boats are called cargo.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16- Isn't this a big, long boat, Lucy?- Yep.
0:04:16 > 0:04:21- It's a narrow boat and, do you know, it's over 100 years old?- Wow.
0:04:21 > 0:04:27- But it's just the same as boats that we used 200 years ago.- Cool.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29Isn't it? Isn't it long?
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Where do you think the family sleep?
0:04:31 > 0:04:33Erm...in that part?
0:04:33 > 0:04:36That's right, they slept in that part, in the back cabin.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39There's also a little cabin at the other end
0:04:39 > 0:04:42that two children could sleep in as well.
0:04:42 > 0:04:46So, quite a big family had this boat for their home.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50Now this part of the boat, from there to the front,
0:04:50 > 0:04:53that's all covered up with the black cloth...
0:04:53 > 0:04:55- Yeah.- ..that's called the cargo hold.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58That's why the cabin is so tiny
0:04:58 > 0:05:02because they wanted so much space for the cargo.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06- Shall we go inside and have a look? - Yes, please.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11Come on, in you come. That's it. In you go.
0:05:19 > 0:05:24This is the sort of cabin that Alice would have lived in 200 years ago.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Oh!- Would you like to live in here?- Yes.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30It looks really pretty.
0:05:30 > 0:05:35- What would be the best things in it, do you think?- Erm...maybe the oven?
0:05:35 > 0:05:39- Yep. That would be nice. Keep you nice and warm, wouldn't it?- Yep.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43- Do you like the paintings? Beautiful, aren't they?- Really lovely.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46In the back, there, there's a little cupboard.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49That little cupboard is where they keep the food
0:05:49 > 0:05:51that needs to be kept cold.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54So, that's like your fridge, at home.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59- What do you think this is?- A table! - That's right, it's a table cupboard.
0:05:59 > 0:06:04So, in there, we've got the cups and the teapots and jugs and things.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09- What do you think that is?- A potty!
0:06:09 > 0:06:14A potty, that's right. That's the toilet, cos there's no bathroom,
0:06:14 > 0:06:16so that's what you'd use for a toilet.
0:06:19 > 0:06:25Now, where we're sitting, here, this is where Alice would have slept.
0:06:25 > 0:06:29Oh, yes, you've got a nice pillow there, haven't you?
0:06:29 > 0:06:33- That's right. Do you think you would find that comfy?- Yep.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36It's a bit narrower than your bed, isn't it?
0:06:36 > 0:06:41- Especially if you have to share it with a brother or sister!- Mh-hm.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48Boat children like Alice didn't often go to school,
0:06:48 > 0:06:49as they were travelling,
0:06:49 > 0:06:53so they had to learn lots of things from their parents.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Now, shall we do some school work?- Yes.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59If I've got ten sacks of flour on the boat...
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Yeah.- ..and we deliver six to the factory,
0:07:02 > 0:07:06- how many do you think we've got left on the boat?- Four.
0:07:06 > 0:07:07Well done, that's right.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10Now, I'm going to show you something else.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13- We've got a rug, like this, in the cabin.- Yeah.
0:07:13 > 0:07:18Now we need a new one, so I'm going to show you how to make it.
0:07:18 > 0:07:19Mm-hm.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22What we do, it doesn't cost us anything,
0:07:22 > 0:07:25- because we've got lots of sacks, haven't we?- Mhm.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29So, we use the sack, and we use little bits of material
0:07:29 > 0:07:32- from clothes that you've worn out.- Mhm.
0:07:32 > 0:07:37We cut the clothes up in pieces, and make strips, like that.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41First thing is make your hole. You put this under two threads,
0:07:41 > 0:07:42- like that.- Yeah.
0:07:42 > 0:07:46- Make a nice, big hole for the material to go through.- Mhm.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48That's it, well done.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52Now, pull it out, and push that through the hole you've made.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54Whoops! Missed.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58There we are. And then pull the material through.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00There you are!
0:08:00 > 0:08:03- You've put on a brown bit. OK? - Yep.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05Ah. Well done.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07- Good, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09We can make a whole rug, like that,
0:08:09 > 0:08:12- out of old bits of material and a sack.- Yep.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Boat children didn't have many toy, but here are some that children
0:08:21 > 0:08:23would have played with, 200 years ago.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29These are skittles, a game they used to play in the olden days.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31- Shall we use these balls to knock them down?- Yes.
0:08:31 > 0:08:35- They're made of wood, aren't they? - Yes. I'm going first.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39Oh, bad luck, Lucy! That was close!
0:08:39 > 0:08:40See if I can do it.
0:08:40 > 0:08:44- Oh! Yours was better than mine, wasn't it?- Mhm.
0:08:46 > 0:08:48- Oh, wa-hey!- Well done, Granny Cath!
0:08:48 > 0:08:50You've knocked them all over.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55- BOTH: Wa-hey! - Great shot, Lucy!
0:08:55 > 0:08:57Only two left standing!
0:08:57 > 0:09:02This is another wooden game. We've got to get the ball in the cup.
0:09:02 > 0:09:03Oops.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06It's much more difficult, this one.
0:09:06 > 0:09:10That looks tricky! Do you think YOU would be able to do it?
0:09:11 > 0:09:13Yay! Got it in!
0:09:13 > 0:09:15Well done, Lucy.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17These old games look a lot of fun.
0:09:29 > 0:09:32This is Sue, Granny Cath's friend.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37Sue's horse Toby is going to pull the narrow boat along the canal
0:09:37 > 0:09:40because the first narrow boats didn't have engines.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43- Toby's doing well, isn't he?- Yes!
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Sue doesn't even need to be here driving him, does she?
0:09:48 > 0:09:50- He knows his own way home.- Yeah.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53Toby is a really cute horse.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57The narrow boat is taking sacks of wool to the factory,
0:09:57 > 0:10:01so they can turn it into cloth to make clothes.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05Toby the horse is doing a great job of pulling the narrow boat.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08Granny Cath is really good at steering the boat.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11What a great way to travel!
0:10:13 > 0:10:15When people built the canals,
0:10:15 > 0:10:19they had to work out how the boats would get up and down hills.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22They built special things called "locks".
0:10:22 > 0:10:26Granny Cath and Lucy are about to open a lock.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29- You can do it all by yourself, can't you?- Yeah.
0:10:29 > 0:10:30That's it, well done.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32Well done.
0:10:32 > 0:10:34Lucy is pushing the lock gate open,
0:10:34 > 0:10:37so the boat can come into the lock.
0:10:38 > 0:10:39Here it comes!
0:10:45 > 0:10:48Once the boat is in, Lucy has to close the gate.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52Oh, well done!
0:10:57 > 0:11:01Now, Granny Cath is turning the key to let out the water,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04just like pulling the plug in the bath.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07Look, the boat is starting to go down.
0:11:11 > 0:11:15Can you see the water emptying out? The boat's going down.
0:11:15 > 0:11:19Lucy is watching the boat go down to the bottom of the lock.
0:11:19 > 0:11:24And when it stops going down, we'll open the gate.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27It's time now to open the gate and let the boat out.
0:11:27 > 0:11:32It was the women and children's job to do the locks in the olden days,
0:11:32 > 0:11:35just like Granny Cath and Lucy are doing now.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Now they can take the boat, and its cargo, to the factory.
0:11:43 > 0:11:44Now, isn't it clever?
0:11:44 > 0:11:47The boat's come from up here, the top of the hill,
0:11:47 > 0:11:52- all the way down to the bottom, down there.- Yes.- Isn't that good?- Yes!
0:12:07 > 0:12:11Granny, I've had a lovely time finding out about Alice.
0:12:11 > 0:12:15Can you remember all the things we've done?
0:12:15 > 0:12:18We got dressed up, just like boat people,
0:12:18 > 0:12:21and I looked like Alice would have done.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23I loved our bonnets!
0:12:23 > 0:12:25It is very smart, isn't it?
0:12:25 > 0:12:29We went to the Waterway museum.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32We looked round the narrow boat,
0:12:32 > 0:12:34which is a really old boat.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38We made a rug using rags,
0:12:38 > 0:12:40just like the olden days.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46You showed me games that children would have played long ago.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50- Yeah!- Wa-hey!
0:12:50 > 0:12:53Toby the horse pulled the boat along the canal,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56while you steered the boat.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59It was great fun.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02I helped you open and close the lock,
0:13:02 > 0:13:05so the boat could go downhill.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07And what was your favourite thing?
0:13:07 > 0:13:11Going on the canalboat. And what was your favourite thing?
0:13:11 > 0:13:14I enjoyed spending so much time with you!
0:13:14 > 0:13:17Shall we go and change back into our normal clothes?
0:13:17 > 0:13:20Yes, but first, I'm going to feed Toby the horse.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23And I'm going to have a BIG cuddle!
0:13:26 > 0:13:28What a fabulous heap of fun!
0:13:28 > 0:13:31That was Lucy and Granny Cath's tiny tale
0:13:31 > 0:13:34about being a child during the Industrial Revolution,
0:13:34 > 0:13:36200 years ago.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39Now Granny Cath has shared this story with Lucy,
0:13:39 > 0:13:43it's time for Lucy to start her very own story.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46Do you know someone with a story to share?
