0:00:13 > 0:00:16Hi, I'm Martin and this is Newsround.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18And first, the UK continues to be battered by freezing
0:00:18 > 0:00:21temperatures and heavy snow.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24Today, a new red weather warning has been issued
0:00:24 > 0:00:27in parts of south Wales, Devon and Somerset.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30Heavy snow has arrived in the area.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32A red warning is the most serious the Met Office can issue,
0:00:32 > 0:00:37and means that the weather is likely to cause damage.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Next, to Florida in the US, where kids have returned to school
0:00:39 > 0:00:43after a serious gun attack that happened there two weeks ago.
0:00:43 > 0:00:47The BBC's Paul Blake went to meet one of the students going back
0:00:47 > 0:00:49to lessons for the first time.
0:00:50 > 0:00:51Hey, Newsround.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54I'm here outside a school in Florida in the United States.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56And it's a big day for students here.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59Their first day back in class since a gun attack two weeks
0:00:59 > 0:01:02ago that shocked people here and around the world.
0:01:02 > 0:01:0517 people were killed and many others were injured.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08I caught up with 16-year-old Lyliah Skinner to ask her how she felt
0:01:08 > 0:01:10about going back to school.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13It feels really weird, because I feel like I fell out
0:01:13 > 0:01:18of the habit of going to school everyday.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19I'm still a little nervous.
0:01:19 > 0:01:21I think eventually it will be normal again,
0:01:21 > 0:01:23but not the same normal it was before the shooting.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27It will probably be a new type of normal, because those 17 people
0:01:27 > 0:01:31aren't going to be there.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34As the students filed into class today, they were hoping
0:01:34 > 0:01:36to return to a normal life.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39Many people came to greet them and offer support.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Throughout the school day, police stood guard outside
0:01:41 > 0:01:48the school so that all the students and teachers would feel safe.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52After class, Lyliah met up with some of her friends and told me how
0:01:52 > 0:01:55she felt about her first day back on campus.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58It was really good to be back in my school.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01It was great to see everyone.
0:02:01 > 0:02:06People that we didn't even talk to, we talked to them, and we let each
0:02:06 > 0:02:14other know that we have each other's back, we support each other.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18My friends and I, we hang out and we paint, and we laugh and make
0:02:18 > 0:02:21jokes to make each other feel better so we can all heal properly.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23We are very optimistic about the future.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26We are going to make sure everyone is OK,
0:02:26 > 0:02:30and we're going to find ways that work for us and we're
0:02:30 > 0:02:33going to just move on.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37Next, around the world people have been celebrating reading and writing
0:02:37 > 0:02:40today for World Book Day.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43And loads of you will have been dressing up for school
0:02:43 > 0:02:46and taking part in activities.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Well, if all the focus on books has made you think you might
0:02:49 > 0:02:52like to be a writer, here are some top tips from some
0:02:52 > 0:02:54big-name authors to help you create your very
0:02:54 > 0:02:55own bestseller.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Let your imagination carry you where ever it wants to go
0:02:58 > 0:03:01and don't stop yourself.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05Pick something that really happened to you.
0:03:05 > 0:03:11Something exciting or scary, and then add loads of stuff in so it
0:03:11 > 0:03:14gets really weird and wonderful.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16You might think, I can't write about hyenas because I've
0:03:16 > 0:03:19never met a hyena.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22But you can imagine what a hyena is like.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25The most important thing is to have as much fun as you can.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27Don't think that there's any such thing as a right
0:03:27 > 0:03:30story and a wrong story.
0:03:30 > 0:03:35The only thing there is, is your story.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38Always have a pencil with you.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41An ear is a good place to store a pencil, like this.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43And so then, you can always draw.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45Write and read a lot, as much as you can.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48Because the more you do it, the better you get,
0:03:48 > 0:03:50and the more you read, the more you see what other people
0:03:50 > 0:03:52do and how they do it.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55And read as much as you can and try to absorb all your favourite
0:03:55 > 0:03:59books and authors and implement that into your own writing.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02As Philip Larkin the poet said, you write the book that you yourself
0:04:02 > 0:04:06would most like to read, but nobody has bothered
0:04:06 > 0:04:08to write for you.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11And so whatever you love most, that's what you will write down,
0:04:11 > 0:04:14and it will be a really good book.
0:04:14 > 0:04:15Everybody's different.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17You've got to find your own way.
0:04:17 > 0:04:21But for me, what's most important is seeing the book as a sort of map.
0:04:21 > 0:04:23And the most important point on a map is the end.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26So I'm writing a novel at the moment, and I've already
0:04:26 > 0:04:29written the last chapter before I wrote the first.
0:04:29 > 0:04:36That's my most important tip.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Head online to find out what happened when we gave those top
0:04:38 > 0:04:41authors the ultimate Newsround story challenge.
