:00:20. > :00:23.Hello. You're watching Newsround with Hayley and Ore.
:00:23. > :00:26.Finally, it's 1st December. Christmas is on its way, but it'll
:00:26. > :00:30.feel like Santa's come early, because we've got a programme full
:00:30. > :00:35.of newsy pressies for you tonight. Coming up: Why toads might be able
:00:35. > :00:40.to predict earthquakes. And, the story of the spaceship
:00:40. > :00:43.that nearly never made it home. But first Afghanistan. Improving
:00:43. > :00:47.women's rights there was a key target of British and American
:00:47. > :00:50.troops after they brought down the Taliban ten years ago. The Taliban
:00:50. > :00:53.had been ruling the country and under their strict regime women
:00:53. > :00:55.weren't allowed to do basic things like go to school. But
:00:55. > :00:59.international troops are now getting ready to leave Afghanistan
:00:59. > :01:07.and women there are really worried that things will go back to how
:01:07. > :01:12.they used to be. Here's Nell with more. This is Shahazad. She wanted
:01:12. > :01:16.to be an aerospace engineer. Ten years ago a dream like hers would
:01:16. > :01:21.never have become a reality. Under the rule of the Taliban, women in
:01:22. > :01:26.Afghanistan were denied their basic rights. Girls like Shahazad were
:01:26. > :01:29.forbidden from going to school and women weren't allowed to have jobs.
:01:29. > :01:37.Now campaigners say that the terrible conditions they faced will
:01:37. > :01:41.return if the Taliban are back. In 2001 American and British troops
:01:41. > :01:47.invaded Afghanistan and the Taliban were overthrown. Over the last ten
:01:47. > :01:50.years, women's lives have slowly improved. But coalition forces are
:01:50. > :01:56.now preparing to leave the country and negotiations are under way
:01:56. > :02:01.about who will run the country. There are areas still under Taliban
:02:01. > :02:05.control which are known for their terrible treatment of women. Like
:02:05. > :02:09.like Fawzia are very worried. They've been speaking out about the
:02:09. > :02:13.way the Taliban treat women and are scared they could become real
:02:13. > :02:16.targets if the Taliban regain any power. This factory is owned by
:02:16. > :02:20.Hassina, a woman, something which would be impossible under the
:02:20. > :02:24.Taliban. She's worried that girls who have been going school and
:02:24. > :02:29.women who've been working there will be punished by the Taliban,
:02:29. > :02:36.because she says they haven't changed. We are fooling ourselves
:02:36. > :02:39.if we believe that the Taliban has changed their mandate, their view
:02:39. > :02:44.has changed and their philosophy has changed, because they haven't
:02:44. > :02:47.claimed that they have changed and that they are going to be different.
:02:47. > :02:50.World leaders have meeting this month to discuss Afghanistan's
:02:50. > :02:55.future, but women here believe their needs will once again be
:02:55. > :02:59.ignored. Nell has come to speak to us now.
:02:59. > :03:03.Hi, is it right thaw used to live in Afghanistan? Yes. And you have
:03:04. > :03:10.recently been there to make a documentary about what it is like?
:03:10. > :03:15.Yes. How is the life of girls and women there? Under the Taliban it
:03:15. > :03:21.is really strict and women suffered immensely. My aunty was a teacher
:03:21. > :03:28.and under the Taliban she was forced to do it secretly. My uncle
:03:28. > :03:33.went to a secret school just to learn to read. So when the troops
:03:33. > :03:38.were there did it change people's live? Yes, people were able to play,
:03:38. > :03:42.to go to school or get a job. The worry now is that did they won't be
:03:42. > :03:46.able to do it once the troops leave. What's the biggest risk they've
:03:46. > :03:50.got? It is that they could be punished for doing the very things
:03:50. > :03:55.that they enjoy doing. Otherwise they will be forced to stay at home
:03:55. > :03:58.and be completely ignored. Thank you for that.
:03:58. > :04:02.Moving on. A notebook has been sold at auction today for 250,000. But
:04:02. > :04:08.this ain't no ordinary notebook, oh no. This one made history when it
:04:08. > :04:14.went into space and very nearly stayed there. Intrigued? Watch this.
:04:14. > :04:21.We have commitment and we have lift-off at 2.13... 41 years ago
:04:21. > :04:25.Apollo 13 set off on a mission to the Moon, but two days later an
:04:25. > :04:29.oxygen tank exploded creating a very dangerous situation. It left
:04:29. > :04:35.the astronauts desperately short of water, oxygen and power. They were
:04:35. > :04:40.trapped in space. Houston we have a problem here... The Moon landing
:04:40. > :04:45.was aborted and the race was on to get them back. The crew of three
:04:45. > :04:50.was manned by commander Jim Lovell. With the help of his detailed
:04:50. > :04:54.calculations they head Ford Earth. Four days after takeoff they landed
:04:54. > :05:00.in the sea and were rescued. They were treat like heroes. The
:05:00. > :05:03.notebook had played a vital part in getting the astronauts safely home.
:05:03. > :05:06.That is what you call an historic notebook!
:05:06. > :05:09.Next, another big win for Wayne Rooney, but this one is off the
:05:09. > :05:12.pitch The England man has won the latest round of a multi-million
:05:12. > :05:14.pound legal fight with a company that used to look after him.
:05:14. > :05:18.Proactive wanted 4.3 million from the Manchester United striker,
:05:18. > :05:22.saying he owed it to them. This was the word from Wayne. He said he
:05:22. > :05:27."never wanted to go to court in the first place. But you just have to
:05:27. > :05:30.fight for what's right in life. That's what I've always done." Very
:05:30. > :05:33.moral there, Wayne. So, there's only another 24 days
:05:33. > :05:36.until lots of you will be getting stuck into your Christmas dinner
:05:36. > :05:46.with all the trimmings. But what's on the menu for our animal friends?
:05:46. > :05:52.
:05:52. > :05:57.We sent Leah to Chester Zoo to find out. Crisp vegetables, juicy fruit,
:05:57. > :06:03.freshly-boiled eggs and... Meal worms? This is not just food. This
:06:03. > :06:09.is zoo food. It is meal time here at Chester zoo. I've got my recipe
:06:09. > :06:15.book and it's time to find out what's on the menu. We are just
:06:15. > :06:18.about to feed some red pandas. We had some delicious rather
:06:18. > :06:28.scrumptious panda cakes. To keep it really superhealthy we have some
:06:28. > :06:31.
:06:31. > :06:36.These guys get four meal as day, each expertly prepared by the cooks.
:06:36. > :06:41.But some recipes in the book don't take much preparation at all. In
:06:41. > :06:45.the wild, giraffes eat for about 12 hours a day, so I think right now
:06:45. > :06:51.it's time for them to have something to eat. Today's choice is
:06:51. > :06:56.twigs and some branches. The zoo makes sure they get lots of green
:06:56. > :06:59.leaves, even in the winter, to keep them healthy. What proof do you
:06:59. > :07:04.have that it is actually benefiting the animals? The animals themselves
:07:04. > :07:07.tell us that, so if we have got healthy animals, if they are
:07:07. > :07:11.behaving normally, if they are healthy and if they are having
:07:11. > :07:16.babies and reproducing, that's the sign of a good diet. There are
:07:16. > :07:19.7,000 recipes in the book and each animal has its own profile. So if
:07:19. > :07:22.they leave this zoo their new keepers will know exactly what to
:07:22. > :07:24.feed them. Scientists say they may have
:07:24. > :07:27.discovered how toads could predict an earthquake. In 2009, toads
:07:27. > :07:29.disappeared from a pond in L'Aquila, in Italy, just days before a
