0:00:00 > 0:00:00and Christian Fuchs.

0:00:00 > 0:00:07See you!

0:00:07 > 0:00:08Morning, I'm Ricky.

0:00:08 > 0:00:09Coming up on Newsround...

0:00:09 > 0:00:11The girls grilling the supermarkets about plastic packaging.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14The guys taking advantage of flooding in Paris.

0:00:14 > 0:00:21And the kangaroo and the pillowcase.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Some big supermarkets in the UK are promising to do more to help cut

0:00:32 > 0:00:35the amount of plastic we use and throw away, but they haven't

0:00:35 > 0:00:38met these two yet!

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're determined to make sure food stores change their ways.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Hi, I'm Amy.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44And I'm Ella.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47And we're here today on a bit of a mission.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51Every year, UK supermarkets use a million tonnes of plastic.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54And all that plastic is seriously harming our planet.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56We want them to make a change.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Iceland is one of the big UK supermarkets.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02They say they want to cut the amount of plastic that they use.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05So we've come to grill one of their bosses to see

0:01:05 > 0:01:06if they are doing enough.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08We know that wasting plastic is really bad,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11so why do you use so much of it in your shops?

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Because that's what we've been used to for the last 30 years,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16we've been using plastics all the time.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19It's not right, now, but it's just something that we used,

0:01:19 > 0:01:23moving away from traditional materials like paper and board.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26See, the reason we are so passionate about this is because plastic,

0:01:26 > 0:01:31when it's thrown away, is really harmful to the planet.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33It doesn't rot like paper or food.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36So we end up with mountains of the stuff.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Animals get trapped in it, it is eaten by fish in our seas.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42And if it's the sort of plastic that can be recycled,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45it means making more and more of it.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Supermarkets are making some changes, though, like trying to make

0:01:47 > 0:01:50more packaging recyclable.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Iceland say that in five years, all of its own products

0:01:53 > 0:01:56will be plastic free.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Five years is quite a long time.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Now, by that point we'll be around 17 and 19 years old.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03So why aren't you doing it now?

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Why is it taking this long?

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Because the materials are just not available.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09We'd love to do it now.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12So if we go in and say "Right, we're changing direction and we're

0:02:12 > 0:02:14going to another material" and that's more expensive,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17we don't think the consumer is going to pay for that.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20If it's only your products that are going to become plastic free,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22what about everything else?

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Are your shops still going to be completely full of plastic?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26We're trying to get rid of all plastic.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29We're going to push the other brands that you see around the store,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32we're going to push everybody to do it.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Plastic has been a problem for years, so why is the change only

0:02:35 > 0:02:36starting to happen now?

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Blue Planet came along, we all watched it and we were

0:02:38 > 0:02:39shattered, weren't we?

0:02:39 > 0:02:41We're killing sea turtles, we're killing seals.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Yes, we're on it.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46We are already looking at things, we are already changing things,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49but when Blue Planet came on, I think everyone was aware than that

0:02:49 > 0:02:51we've got a problem.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Thank you very much.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Well, it was great to hear what Ian had to say,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59and to hear about all the changes that Iceland are making.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02It just seems to lack that sense of important urgency.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Yeah, Ian said some good stuff but I just can't

0:03:04 > 0:03:08imagine a place like this being completely plastic free.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11So there's still a lot of steps that Iceland and other

0:03:11 > 0:03:12supermarkets need to take.

0:03:12 > 0:03:19I just wish it could happen sooner.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23Some great questions, girls.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26If you want to find out more about plastic and why it can

0:03:26 > 0:03:29be bad for the planet, we've got a full guide online.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Earlier in the week we told you about France's heaviest

0:03:31 > 0:03:34rainfall in 50 years, which flooded parts of Paris

0:03:34 > 0:03:35with some places still underwater.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39But while the floods have been a bit of a nightmare for some -

0:03:39 > 0:03:41these wakeboarders took the chance to practice just outside

0:03:41 > 0:03:44their house in the capital.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46The River Seine has risen about six metres above normal

0:03:46 > 0:03:52for this time of year.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Now some more freaky weather...

0:03:56 > 0:04:02Snow on palm trees!

0:04:02 > 0:04:04These pics are from the North African country of Morocco.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07It's the first time they've seen snow in the south

0:04:07 > 0:04:08of the country in 50 years.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10This little kangaroo is taking his very first hops.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Bradley has been taking the internet by storm.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16The cute little guy is an orphan, so he's being looked

0:04:16 > 0:04:20after at the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, Australia.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22When he gets tired he jumps into a pillowcase that's standing

0:04:22 > 0:04:25in for his mum's pouch.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Awwww...

0:04:27 > 0:04:29I want one!

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Just enough time to tell you to head online, where our big question this

0:04:33 > 0:04:35week is all about Lego and who invented it.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Plus this weekend sees one of the biggest sporting

0:04:37 > 0:04:40events in the world!

0:04:40 > 0:04:43So we've got a guide to just what Superbowl is -

0:04:43 > 0:04:48with two of the biggest stars of the game.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Thanks for watching.
