0:00:11 > 0:00:14Hi, I'm Martin - and welcome to Newsround.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17It's a hundred years since a massive change in the law meant some women

0:00:17 > 0:00:20were allowed to vote in this country for the very first time.

0:00:20 > 0:00:28And that was made possible by a few superheroes.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37These are two superheroes with two very different superpowers,

0:00:37 > 0:00:41both battling a grave injustice.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44The story starts way back in 1897...

0:00:44 > 0:00:45I say!

0:00:45 > 0:00:48..when the only people allowed to vote for their MPs in the UK

0:00:48 > 0:00:52were rich men and no women at all.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Marvellous Millicent was angry about it.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59She set up a league of heroes known as the suffragists.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02They campaigned for women to get the votes and tried to get support

0:01:02 > 0:01:05from men in Parliament.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08But for Amazing Emmeline, this wasn't enough.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10She started a different group of heroes called

0:01:10 > 0:01:14the suffragettes in 1903.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19They felt that they had to go much further to bring about change.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23They chained themselves to railings, set buildings on fire

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and attacked policemen.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Not everyone liked the suffragettes because of their tactics.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32But they definitely made an impact.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35And then in 1914, a great darkness fell upon the planet

0:01:35 > 0:01:38and World War I broke out.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40That meant that women took the place of men

0:01:40 > 0:01:43in lots of really important jobs, while the men fought

0:01:43 > 0:01:45on the battlefield.

0:01:45 > 0:01:53And because women made a huge difference to winning the war,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56it became impossible to keep ignoring demands to

0:01:56 > 0:01:57give them the vote.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59So in 1918, the rules were changed.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02All adult men were allowed to vote, and for the first time, some women.

0:02:02 > 0:02:07It would be another ten years before all women could vote,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10but our superheroes played a huge part in creating a future where men

0:02:10 > 0:02:17and women could have an equal vote.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Have you ever wondered what life's like from a polar

0:02:19 > 0:02:20bear's point of view?

0:02:20 > 0:02:27I know I have - and it seems so have scientists.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29So they attached small cameras to some

0:02:29 > 0:02:31of the bears to watch them going about their daily lives.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Scientists say Arctic sea ice has been melting over

0:02:33 > 0:02:36the last few decades - but polar bears need that ice

0:02:36 > 0:02:41to help them catch their prey.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44They wanted to check if the animals got enough to eat.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47It's hoped the polar bear eye's view camera will help teach us more

0:02:47 > 0:02:51about how the animals are surviving.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Next, it's one of the biggest sporting events in the world

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and the most important match in American football.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58I'm talking about the Super Bowl, which takes place this

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Sunday in the US.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Ricky caught up with two experts to find out more

0:03:03 > 0:03:06about this incredible game.

0:03:14 > 0:03:15The Super Bowl is finally here.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19It is one of the biggest sporting events in the US and it's becoming

0:03:19 > 0:03:24huge all around the world and here in the UK too.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26It's one of the biggest sporting events in the world,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29not just the United States, and it's incredible.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31The United Kingdom taking to the sport is something

0:03:31 > 0:03:33we are all very excited about.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35The event is outstanding, the half-time show and everything

0:03:35 > 0:03:40involved with the game, I'm excited.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42A lot of people talk about the half-time show

0:03:42 > 0:03:45and there is always a huge celebrity on the stage.

0:03:45 > 0:03:46Who is it this year?

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Justin Timberlake.

0:03:50 > 0:03:55Can you tell us who is in the final and this year's Super Bowl?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58We have got the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00The Philadelphia Eagles have never won a Super Bowl

0:04:00 > 0:04:02whereas the Patriots have won five.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04I'm leaning towards the Philadelphia Eagles right now,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07I like the way they play, but you can never really bet

0:04:07 > 0:04:08against New England Patriots.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11What about some top players to look out for?

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The top player in the history of the game, Tom Brady.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15Philadelphia, you've got the new quarterback

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Nick Foles who has really come into his own and last

0:04:18 > 0:04:19couple of games.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24We have Jay Ajayi, a British player, what do we think of him?

0:04:24 > 0:04:28He has been a spark.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30The reason they have had success of late

0:04:30 > 0:04:32is because of him and his skill set.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Great player and fan favourite and I am excited to see him

0:04:35 > 0:04:36in the first Super Bowl.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39You've won the Super Bowl twice with the New York Giants.

0:04:39 > 0:04:40Tell us what that feeling was like.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Hard to describe but I would equate it to winning the World Cup,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45something people here are more familiar with.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48It's so exciting, a lifelong dream, something of a kid America dreams

0:04:48 > 0:04:51about and to finally accomplish that was very special to me.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Enjoy your weekend!

0:04:54 > 0:05:00Have a good one.
