0:00:05 > 0:00:07Hi, I'm Martin, it's Friday and this is Newsround.
0:00:07 > 0:00:08Here's what's coming up.
0:00:08 > 0:00:10Nadiya Hussain's new cooking show.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13And the secrets of how elephants sleep.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25First up showbiz news and Great British Bake Off champ,
0:00:25 > 0:00:27Nadiya Hussain, is set to host
0:00:27 > 0:00:31a brand new BBC series, called The Big Family Cooking
0:00:31 > 0:00:33Showdown, with Strictly's Zoe Ball.
0:00:33 > 0:00:38Chefs Giorgio Locatelli and Rosemary Shrager will judge.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40It's not clear exactly when the programme will be scheduled
0:00:40 > 0:00:43but it's set to rival the next series of Great British
0:00:43 > 0:00:47Bake Off on Channel 4.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51Next up and there's a new character in CBBC's The Dumping Ground.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54His name is Alex and in the show he's homeless
0:00:54 > 0:00:56and has to sleep rough.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59It's a problem that around 1.2 million young people
0:00:59 > 0:01:01in England experienced.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05Connor Lawson who plays Alex, came into NR HQ this morning to talk
0:01:05 > 0:01:07to Jenny about his new role.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11Alex is a pretty troubled kid, he's never had a good background.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13He's constantly been in care, he doesn't
0:01:13 > 0:01:16have a father figure.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18That's meant that he's had to put up a wall
0:01:18 > 0:01:21against the world, and he's showing off his bad behaviour and bad
0:01:21 > 0:01:26persona.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29But really he just wants to be wanted and have some love
0:01:29 > 0:01:30from someone.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32What's it like playing that character, someone who is homeless?
0:01:32 > 0:01:33It's pretty hard.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36It's a total opposite on the scale from me, so
0:01:36 > 0:01:38going from someone who's been nurtured and loved to someone who
0:01:38 > 0:01:41hasn't and who has lived on the street is a total different
0:01:41 > 0:01:42perspective.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45But it's a real eye-opener, and it's been good for
0:01:45 > 0:01:48me to be able to see it from a different perspective too.
0:01:48 > 0:01:50How did you prepare?
0:01:50 > 0:01:52I've done a lot of method acting, I met up with a guy
0:01:52 > 0:01:54who was homeless from Newcastle.
0:01:54 > 0:02:00He told me his stories and where he came from,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03and it was really nice to hear it and to see him
0:02:03 > 0:02:04still smiling from it all.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Next, an unexploded bomb from World War Two has been
0:02:06 > 0:02:08discovered on a building site in north west London.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11A team from the army is working on the unexploded
0:02:11 > 0:02:12bomb, to make it safe.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15People living nearby have had to leave their homes and a nursery
0:02:15 > 0:02:16school has been closed.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19Work to make the area safe has been going on all day.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22There are about to be some big changes to how the UK deals
0:02:22 > 0:02:23with its neighbours in Europe.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25It's all because of something you might have heard mentioned
0:02:25 > 0:02:27a lot recently: Brexit.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Jenny went to Scotland to find out what kids there think.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Despite what people say, it's not always raining.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39The people are nice and friendly.
0:02:39 > 0:02:42There is loads to see and do and I love the museums.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, where a lot of people have strong
0:02:47 > 0:02:51opinions on the vote that happened last year on whether the UK should
0:02:51 > 0:02:56leave a club of countries called the European Union.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58Across the whole UK, most people voted to
0:02:58 > 0:03:00leave the EU, but here in
0:03:00 > 0:03:04Scotland, most people wanted to stay in it.
0:03:04 > 0:03:09So what do the children here think now the UK is leaving?
0:03:09 > 0:03:12Well, I think it is kind of bad because it leaves the UK more
0:03:12 > 0:03:14vulnerable than we are right now, we
0:03:14 > 0:03:18don't have the support that we used to since we've left the EU.
0:03:18 > 0:03:22The EU has different rules from what other
0:03:22 > 0:03:25countries have, if we leave we will not be following them any
0:03:25 > 0:03:29more, so it might be a bit confusing.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32I don't like the fact that we are leaving but I guess it
0:03:32 > 0:03:37will have to happen.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39I think children should have had a say because it
0:03:39 > 0:03:40will affect their future.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43I hope they don't keep going on about it, if they are going
0:03:43 > 0:03:45to do it, just do it.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47And there's loads more about Brexit and what it all means
0:03:47 > 0:03:51at Newsround online.
0:03:51 > 0:03:53If you think you know everything there is to know about elephants,
0:03:53 > 0:03:55well you'd be wrong.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Researchers in Botswana have made an exciting new discovery.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00Watch this.
0:04:00 > 0:04:06African elephants already hold the title
0:04:06 > 0:04:08for largest land animal, but now they might be
0:04:08 > 0:04:15about to break another record, for least sleep.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17Researchers in Botswana found that elephants like these guys need only
0:04:17 > 0:04:18two hours of sleep a night.
0:04:18 > 0:04:20That's roughly 14 hours a week.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22Compared to around 56 hours needed for humans.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25And roughly 112 hours for cats.
0:04:25 > 0:04:26The study even worked out how they are
0:04:26 > 0:04:29sleeping, by placing a monitor in their trunks.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32And fitting a collar that detects movement.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34The researchers found that the elephants
0:04:34 > 0:04:43usually snooze standing, and only lie down every few nights.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44It's thought elephants sleep so little
0:04:44 > 0:04:47because they have to be on the lookout for danger.
0:04:47 > 0:04:49They also need a lot of food to power their big
0:04:49 > 0:04:52bodies, and prefer to spend their time eating or searching
0:04:52 > 0:04:53for their next snack.
0:04:53 > 0:04:54That's all from me, Newsround's back right
0:04:54 > 0:04:57here in the morning just before 9am.
