:02:17. > :02:18.When Matthew's teacher spotted his talent at playing the violin,

:02:19. > :02:21.he wondered if he could lead a whole orchestra.

:02:22. > :02:34.At 11-years-old, he's ready to become one of the world's

:02:35. > :02:39.Pretty soon, he's going to be up on stage at the front

:02:40. > :02:44.of this Symphony Orchestra, leading them through a performance

:02:45. > :02:46.of an operetta called Die Fledermaus.

:02:47. > :02:50.Tell me a little bit about why you've decided to do conducting.

:02:51. > :02:56.At the start I never really wanted to start conducting because a few

:02:57. > :02:59.years back my music teacher told me to learn this conducting

:03:00. > :03:01.piece, Die Fledermaus, which I'm performing now,

:03:02. > :03:09.But at the time I wasn't able to conduct this

:03:10. > :03:13.This is a really important rehearsal for Matthew,

:03:14. > :03:16.it's one of the last chances for the players to get everything

:03:17. > :03:22.There are 75 players in the orchestra and it's his job

:03:23. > :03:25.to lead them, keeping them all in time with each other

:03:26. > :03:36.and checking that the audience can hear all the different parts.

:03:37. > :03:38.My job with the orchestra is keeping time, making sure they're

:03:39. > :03:46.I'm just controlling how they play, I can control if they play loud

:03:47. > :04:05.all of those adults? It is hard, because as a kid I'm not usually in

:04:06. > :04:09.control of them, they are in control of May!

:04:10. > :04:18.When I'm playing the song, I have to tell them what to do,

:04:19. > :04:33.and what to do when they start and when they finish,

:04:34. > :04:35.He's better than some adult conductors I've played under before,

:04:36. > :04:40.Finally what do you think this strange image behind me is?

:04:41. > :04:43.Well, it's actually the winner of the Engineering

:04:44. > :04:45.and Physical Sciences Research Council photography competition.

:04:46. > :04:49.And this image shows us a close up of some swirling ink made
