:00:13. > :00:20.Happy Friday afternoon. I'm Ricky, here is what's coming up. Stop

:00:20. > :00:29.killing birds. We meet the school kids trying to save sea birds. The

:00:29. > :00:35.rubber duck - you don't want a new bathroom - this is Newsround.

:00:36. > :00:40.First, to a chemical spill that the RSPB is calling one of the worst in

:00:40. > :00:48.decades. Twice on the south coast of England, sea birds have washed

:00:48. > :00:57.up on beaches covered in a sticky substance. 2,500 have died. It is a

:00:57. > :01:03.chemical found in chewing gum to tyres. It is called PIB.

:01:03. > :01:07.Sea birds - beautiful, agile hunters that we rarely get to see.

:01:07. > :01:10.Since January thousands have washed up on beaches like this because of

:01:10. > :01:15.pollution. Thousands of birds out there have suffered as a

:01:15. > :01:22.consequence of this being in the water. It is very sticky. When it

:01:22. > :01:26.mixes with sea water it becomes very sticky and it matts the bird's

:01:26. > :01:31.feather, so they cannot swim. They suffer very quickly. Scientists

:01:31. > :01:35.here at the University of Plymouth have worked out this could be the

:01:35. > :01:40.substance causing all the problems. It is a type of PIB. As you can see,

:01:41. > :01:46.it is very sticky. It is thought this type of PIB is used in ship

:01:46. > :01:50.engines. It is legal to release it into sea under certain conditions.

:01:50. > :01:55.The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is investigating where the chemical

:01:55. > :02:03.has come from, but admits it is unlikely they will be able to find

:02:03. > :02:06.the ship or ships responsible. Children at this school in Cornwall

:02:06. > :02:11.are seeing for themselves the dead birds washing up on the beaches

:02:11. > :02:16.they are playing on. They have started a campaign to do something

:02:16. > :02:20.about it. We live near the beaches. We don't like to see dead birds.

:02:20. > :02:26.They haven't done anything to us. Why should we harm them? All these

:02:26. > :02:32.birds are dying, so we want to change the law to ban PIB. What are

:02:32. > :02:37.you doing to try and stop this happening? We have written to the

:02:37. > :02:41.Government, an MP and Prince Charles. We don't have a reply yet

:02:41. > :02:51.and we feel quite angry. shipping minister has told

:02:51. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:07.These guillemots here are in the final stages of rehabilitation.

:03:07. > :03:12.Questions remain unanswered about what happened out in the waters.

:03:12. > :03:16.Thank you. Over on the Newsround website you can see a sea birds rap

:03:16. > :03:21.the children have done. We will follow that for you to see how

:03:21. > :03:25.their campaign goes. Are you more like this, or this? Well, a head

:03:25. > :03:29.teacher from London has people talking about encouraging pupils

:03:29. > :03:33.not to have best friends and have big groups of friends instead. He

:03:33. > :03:43.has told a newspaper having just one mate can make other kids feel

:03:43. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :03:59.left out and upset. On the website, I know I've had one of these in my

:03:59. > :04:07.baths before. I bet you guys have too. I am not sure you will find a

:04:07. > :04:11.bath big enough for this! This 16- metre rubber duck was pulled across

:04:11. > :04:16.Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. It has been around the world and the

:04:16. > :04:20.artist wants it to inspire peace and harmony. Bring on the bank

:04:20. > :04:27.holiday. It is a megaweekend with three days off school. The good

:04:27. > :04:33.news - most of you will have some sunshine. During this bank holiday

:04:33. > :04:39.weekend it seems we'll see a big contrast in temperatures. Strong

:04:39. > :04:42.sunshine in May. Where will it be warmest? Northern areas,

:04:42. > :04:51.particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland will be breezy with rain at
