:00:32. > :00:34.The King of Spain, Juan Carlos, went on TV to announce

:00:35. > :00:37.that he was stepping down as King after nearly 40 years.

:00:41. > :00:49.It's called abdicating and has never happened in Spain before.

:00:50. > :00:57.In the past, he was worried popular. He helped develop this country and

:00:58. > :01:01.helped it modernise. He has recently been in trouble. He was criticised

:01:02. > :01:02.because he went hunting elephants in Africa when a lot of people here in

:01:03. > :01:06.Spain could not even find a job. The announcement was met

:01:07. > :01:08.by protests in cities, including these in the capital,

:01:09. > :01:10.Madrid. They're calling for a vote to be

:01:11. > :01:13.held to decide whether Spain Because Spain has never been faced

:01:14. > :01:18.with this situation before, they don't have a law on abdication

:01:19. > :01:20.and royal succession. Members of the government

:01:21. > :01:23.have met today to talk about drawing up a law that will

:01:24. > :01:26.allow Prince Felipe to become King. Giving up the throne has happened

:01:27. > :01:34.in other countries. Last year, Belgium's King Albert

:01:35. > :01:37.abdicated in favour of his son and Queen Beatrix

:01:38. > :01:49.of the Netherlands also stepped The Queen will not abdicate. She has

:01:50. > :01:51.no intention of doing so. She made a promise in 1947 that she would serve

:01:52. > :01:54.all of her life. as Prince Felipe prepares to
