0:00:34 > 0:00:37one of the deadliest events of the First World War.
0:00:37 > 0:00:44Martin's been to France, where it happened, to meet Laurie,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46who's tracing the steps of his great great Uncle
0:00:46 > 0:00:47who fought in the battle.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50I'm here to meet some kids from all over the UK who have
0:00:50 > 0:00:52travelled here to France to go on the same journey
0:00:52 > 0:00:55the soldiers did 100 years ago. One of them is Laurie.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57I'm trying to learn about my great-great-uncle.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59I already know that his name is Joshua
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Stevens and he came here to fight.
0:01:01 > 0:01:02That's all I know at the moment.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04So, Simon, what can you tell us about
0:01:04 > 0:01:06Laurie's great great uncle?
0:01:06 > 0:01:08We've been able to find out that Joshua
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Stevens was one of eight children, he enlisted in the spring of 1916
0:01:11 > 0:01:13in the eighth battalion in the
0:01:13 > 0:01:22Worcestershire Regiment.
0:01:22 > 0:01:26He would have headed out to France, where he arrived in time to
0:01:26 > 0:01:28take part in the battle of the Somme.
0:01:28 > 0:01:29He would have spent a lot of
0:01:29 > 0:01:31the winter very uncomfortable in unpleasant conditions, experiencing
0:01:31 > 0:01:34all of the worst that the weather and the Germans could throw at him.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37Laurie, do you think you could handle those conditions?
0:01:37 > 0:01:38No, I don't think I could actually.
0:01:38 > 0:01:39It sounds horrible.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42But like millions of soldiers fighting on the Somme through the
0:01:42 > 0:01:43First World War, Laurie's great-great-uncle
0:01:43 > 0:01:45didn't make it home.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47He died whilst fighting here on the 24th

0:01:50 > 0:01:52He was a very brave person.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55This huge building behind me is the Thiepval memorial
0:01:55 > 0:01:56to the missing.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59For the soldiers who died fighting for
0:01:59 > 0:02:02the British side during World War I, but were never found.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05It's here that Laurie has a special task.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08Joshua Stevens is here on one of the panels
0:02:08 > 0:02:14and I'm going to show my respect by the placing these flowers.
0:02:14 > 0:02:19Joshua Stevens is one of more than 72,000
0:02:19 > 0:02:21soldiers names carved into the walls here.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23All around the world there are
0:02:23 > 0:02:26memorials like Thiepval to ensure that those who died during

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Go online for everything you need to know about the Battle
0:02:32 > 0:02:35of the Somme Including the story of a 12-year-old boy who ran off

0:02:36 > 0:02:41It's an incredible story.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Sport now and the biggest shock of the Wimbledon tournament so far.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46World number one Novak Djokovic is out.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48He was beaten by American Sam Querrey in four sets.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Even though Djokovic seemed pretty unhappy with his performance,
0:02:50 > 0:02:56he still praised his opponent.
0:02:56 > 0:02:57Congratulations to Sam.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00He played a terrific match.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04He serves very well, as he usually does, and I think that
0:03:04 > 0:03:08part of his game was brutal today.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11He made a lot of free points with the first serve and just
0:03:11 > 0:03:14well done, you know.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18He overpowered me.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20No such problems for world number two Andy Murray,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22who stormed into the fourth round in straight sets.
0:03:22 > 0:03:31He beat Australia's John Millman.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33It wasn't just the tennis that was exciting yesterday,
0:03:33 > 0:03:35Germany knocked out Italy on penalties at the
0:03:35 > 0:03:36European Championships.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Here's a quick look at what happened.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40It was a tight first half with neither side having much
0:03:40 > 0:03:42of a chance in front of goal.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44But in the 65th minute, Mesut Ozil put Germany ahead
0:03:44 > 0:03:48with this slick passing move.
0:03:48 > 0:03:50But a moment of madness from defender Jerome Boateng
0:03:50 > 0:03:53with a handball in the box, and Italy had a chance
0:03:53 > 0:03:55to level, and they did.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58The match went into extra time but with nothing between them,
0:03:58 > 0:03:59it went to penalties.
0:03:59 > 0:04:04Both sides struggled to handle the pressure.
0:04:04 > 0:04:12Until at last, in sudden death, Germany finally clinched it.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15They've still never lost a shoot out since the 1976 final
0:04:15 > 0:04:17of this competition, when they lost to Czechoslovakia
0:04:17 > 0:04:2040 years ago.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23The Germans will face either France or Iceland in the semifinals,
0:04:23 > 0:04:30which kick off later today.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33Iceland, who beat England in the last round, are the lowest
0:04:33 > 0:04:34ranked side in the tournament.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37So why have they done so well and how will they do against France?
0:04:37 > 0:04:40We've been asking some icelandic fans.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42I think they are doing well, because a lot
0:04:42 > 0:04:44of Icelanders are at the
0:04:44 > 0:04:49stadium rooting for them and I think they get a lot of support from them.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52Why do you think Iceland is doing so well in this tournament?
0:04:52 > 0:04:55Because the other sides aren't!
0:04:55 > 0:05:02I think that Iceland will definitely win.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05I think it will be a tie at 1-1 and there will be
0:05:05 > 0:05:08a penalty shoot out at Iceland will win.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12So, you think they will win? Yes.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15I think they will have this much goals.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17HE CHANTS IN ICELANDIC
0:05:17 > 0:05:21We are going to win 1-0. You're sure?
0:05:21 > 0:05:29Yes.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31THEY CHANT IN ICELANDIC
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Finally, to a sport of a more unusual kind, the annual
0:05:34 > 0:05:35Wife Carrying World Championships in Finland.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39People from twelve countries took part, but it was this
0:05:39 > 0:05:42russian couple who won.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44In the race men have to carry their partner around
0:05:44 > 0:05:47a 235-metre obstacle course, which included a very
0:05:47 > 0:05:50slippery swimming pool.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52The most ridiculous thing ever!
0:05:52 > 0:05:54Bless them.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59That's all for now, I'll be back just after 2pm.
