:00:14. > :00:22.Good afternoon news fans, I'm Ricky with Monday's top stories. Coming

:00:22. > :00:26.up today: I have got more on the plans to stop these guys from being

:00:26. > :00:30.hunted to extinction. And who will join Helen and Barney? We'll speak

:00:30. > :00:33.to Dick and Dom about their search for a new Blue Peter presenter!

:00:33. > :00:35.First to what's being described as a huge step forward in the fight to

:00:35. > :00:38.protect the world's elephants. Thousands of these animals are

:00:38. > :00:41.killed every year because their tusks are extremely valuable and

:00:41. > :00:44.Thailand is one of the countries right at the centre of the ivory

:00:44. > :00:47.trade. Now the Thai Prime Minister has promised to change her

:00:47. > :00:54.country's laws to ban the sale of ivory.

:00:54. > :01:00.A message of warning from one of the world's most recognised faces.

:01:00. > :01:05.We can see the populations of these creatures or an entire species

:01:05. > :01:08.disappear from the wild. We must not let this catastrophe unfold.

:01:08. > :01:11.That's the message Prince William gave to a big meeting in Thailand.

:01:11. > :01:13.Officials from countries all over the world are in the capital,

:01:13. > :01:16.Bangkok, to discuss how they can control the illegal trade of

:01:16. > :01:19.endangered species. They've got two weeks to work out what needs to

:01:19. > :01:24.change to protect thousands of plants and animals across the

:01:24. > :01:27.planet. One of the biggest issues is the ivory trade. Ivory from

:01:27. > :01:30.elephants' tusks is used in Asia to make precious ornaments and

:01:30. > :01:34.jewellery, and can be worth a lot of money. Trading elephant tusks

:01:34. > :01:37.between countries is already illegal. But one of the big changes

:01:37. > :01:40.to come from the meeting is that Thailand's Prime Minister has

:01:40. > :01:43.promised to change her country's law to ban the sale of ivory there.

:01:43. > :01:46.There are around 6,500 elephants living in Thailand. At the moment

:01:46. > :01:56.Thai law says that ivory taken from these animals can be sold legally

:01:56. > :01:57.

:01:57. > :02:01.there. But campaign groups say it means tusks are illegally smuggled

:02:01. > :02:05.in from Africa, meaning between 50 and 100 African elephants a day are

:02:05. > :02:08.being killed to meet the demand. There is still a lot to be done,

:02:08. > :02:13.but a big politician in a country like Thailand has made this

:02:13. > :02:15.decision, so people with power may follow in her steps as well.

:02:15. > :02:20.Conservationists are saying that the Thai Prime Minister wasn't

:02:20. > :02:25.completely clear on the details. is a big step forward. The

:02:25. > :02:30.statement she made was a bit vague in terms of when it would be banned

:02:31. > :02:34.by. But the fact at this meeting that the Prime Minister stood up

:02:34. > :02:37.and said that is a step forward. But with all eyes on Thailand, the

:02:37. > :02:39.pressure's mounting to make sure wildlife stays protected for future

:02:39. > :02:41.generations. OK next, the Queen left hospital

:02:41. > :02:44.this afternoon after staying overnight to be monitored for

:02:44. > :02:47.symptoms of a stomach bug gastroenteritis. She was taken to

:02:47. > :02:52.hospital yesterday as a precaution to make it easier for doctors to

:02:52. > :02:55.see how she was doing. The Queen, who's 86 years old, is normally in

:02:55. > :02:59.fantastic health and this is the first time for ten years she's had

:02:59. > :03:03.a stay in hospital. Forget X Factor and The Voice, we

:03:03. > :03:07.have news today of a talent show with the ultimate prize. Blue Peter

:03:07. > :03:11.is looking for a new presenter and the winner's going to be chosen by

:03:11. > :03:14.you! A brand new show will find someone to join Barney and Helen.

:03:14. > :03:17.Contestants will have to complete a different challenge each week,

:03:17. > :03:20.trying to impress a panel of judges to get through to the grand final.

:03:20. > :03:26.Richard and Dominic otherwise known as, Dick and Dom, will be hosting

:03:26. > :03:28.the new show. Welcome to the Newsround sofa, guys!

:04:14. > :04:24.so important, do we think this presenter will be iconic? They have

:04:24. > :04:27.a tough act to follow with these two. But it retouched the viewer.
