:00:41. > :00:43.He's the first director from a black background to pick up
:00:44. > :00:47.But he's told us he had a hard time at school, and that
:00:48. > :00:51.A survey for Newsround looking at your aspirations for the future
:00:52. > :00:54.suggests that black and Asian children were least likely to say
:00:55. > :00:57.that their teachers would describe them as clever or ambitious.
:00:58. > :01:07.I've been to meet Steve in London to find out more.
:01:08. > :01:08.Hollywood, home of the biggest movies,
:01:09. > :01:11.the brightest and most talented stars, and it hosts some of the
:01:12. > :01:15.British film director Steve McQueen is one of the most popular people
:01:16. > :01:19.Earlier this year he won an Oscar, one of the most important film
:01:20. > :01:26.And it's the first time that someone from a black background has won
:01:27. > :01:29.But when Steve was at school in the UK,
:01:30. > :01:34.There was this situation where black children were not deemed
:01:35. > :01:39.as intelligent or deemed to be able to go on to do anything
:01:40. > :01:49.And it was because of people who believed in me, like my mother and
:01:50. > :01:53.my father, and it was a situation where I was very determined.
:01:54. > :02:00.In our Newsround survey, black and Asian children were less likely
:02:01. > :02:02.than white children to feel like their teachers would describe
:02:03. > :02:06.Steve went to school in the 1970s and thinks that not
:02:07. > :02:11.The circle has to be broken, it's upsetting to think that it?s not.
:02:12. > :02:14.I'm sitting here with you now and I left school nearly 30 years ago
:02:15. > :02:24.and it's still the same rubbish that goes on.
:02:25. > :02:31.So what does he think needs to be done to make children from
:02:32. > :02:41.an ethnic-minority background feel they can succeed in this country?
:02:42. > :02:43.It's about that belief, filling people's lungs with ambition
:02:44. > :02:49.When you narrow people's possibilities then they become
:02:50. > :02:54.narrow, when you open their possibilities they become open, and
:02:55. > :02:57.give them the idea that things are possible, because it's the truth.
:02:58. > :03:00.Steve is working on a new project with American President Barack Obama
:03:01. > :03:04.aimed at helping disadvantaged children do better in school.
:03:05. > :03:07.And it's Steve's dream to bring the project here to the UK and give
:03:08. > :03:12.children the support that they need to have the job of their dreams.
:03:13. > :03:14.Next, we're nearing the end of Wimbledon,
:03:15. > :03:17.and the line-up for the women's final is set with Eugenie Bouchard
:03:18. > :03:23.and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova ready to battle it out on Saturday.
