:00:44. > :00:48.A survey for Newsround looking at your aspirations for the future
:00:49. > :00:50.suggests that black and Asian children were least likely to say
:00:51. > :00:54.that their teachers would describe them as clever or ambitious.

:01:12. > :01:14.the brightest and most talented stars, and it hosts some of the
:01:15. > :01:18.British film director Steve McQueen is one of the most popular people
:01:19. > :01:22.Earlier this year he won an Oscar, one of the most important film
:01:23. > :01:26.And it's the first time that someone from a black background has won
:01:27. > :01:30.But when Steve was at school in the UK,
:01:31. > :01:35.There was this situation where black children were not deemed
:01:36. > :01:39.as intelligent or deemed to be able to go on to do anything
:01:40. > :01:48.And it was because of people who believed in me, like my mother and
:01:49. > :01:54.my father, and it was a situation where I was very determined.
:01:55. > :01:57.In our Newsround survey, black and Asian children were less likely
:01:58. > :01:59.than white children to feel like their teachers would describe
:02:00. > :02:06.Steve went to school in the 1970s and thinks that not
:02:07. > :02:13.The circle has to be broken, it's upsetting to think that it?s not.
:02:14. > :02:26.I'm sitting here with you now and I left school nearly 30 years ago
:02:27. > :02:28.and it's still the same rubbish that goes on.
:02:29. > :02:32.So what does he think needs to be done to make children from
:02:33. > :02:37.an ethnic-minority background feel they can succeed in this country?
:02:38. > :02:40.It's about that belief, filling people's lungs with ambition
:02:41. > :02:48.When you narrow people's possibilities then they become
:02:49. > :02:50.narrow, when you open their possibilities they become open, and
:02:51. > :02:57.give them the idea that things are possible, because it's the truth.
:02:58. > :03:00.Steve is working on a new project with American President Barack Obama
:03:01. > :03:03.aimed at helping disadvantaged children do better in school.
:03:04. > :03:07.And it's Steve's dream to bring the project here to the UK and give
:03:08. > :03:32.children the support that they need to have the job of their dreams.
