0:00:04 > 0:00:06Let's get the stories you need to know this Wednesday.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08I'm Ayshah and here's what's coming up:

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Are you spending too much time on your gadgets?

0:00:11 > 0:00:15The species with a tongue faster than a Formula 1 car.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26But first, after Christmas, animal charities in the UK

0:00:26 > 0:00:29see a huge leap in the number of abandoned pets.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32They're often given as presents but sometimes their new owners

0:00:32 > 0:00:34struggle to look after them.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Leah's been to meet two boys who took on rescue cat, Purdy,

0:00:37 > 0:00:43to find out more.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Oscar and Monty are two animal lovers who welcomed this cat

0:00:46 > 0:00:52into their home after she was abandoned at Christmas 2014.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55So, Oscar, Monty, can you tell me a bit about Purdy?

0:00:55 > 0:00:56She was abandoned, wasn't she?

0:00:56 > 0:00:59How do you feel about that?

0:00:59 > 0:01:01It was really mean people who own her.

0:01:01 > 0:01:08Just really not kind.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11How important do you think it is to really understand how

0:01:11 > 0:01:14to look after he pets and know how to care for them?

0:01:14 > 0:01:18Quite a lot, because if you don't know how to look after them,

0:01:18 > 0:01:22you might be treating them really badly.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26It was RSPCA inspector Esther Lincoln who came

0:01:26 > 0:01:28to the rescue of Purdy.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30She is back to visit Oscar and Monty

0:01:30 > 0:01:34to see how their furry friend Purdy is doing.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Esther, can you tell me how you found Purdy?

0:01:38 > 0:01:40I was called to an abandoned kitten

0:01:40 > 0:01:43on the seventh floor of a high-rise block of flats.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46There are along the corridor on the side was a load of boxes

0:01:46 > 0:01:49filled with a mound of tinsel with Christmas decorations on top

0:01:49 > 0:01:51and literally loose was this small kitten,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54couldn't be more than a couple of months old.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57There are a lot of animals that are gotten rid of

0:01:57 > 0:01:58after Christmas, unwanted Christmas presents.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01If you do unfortunately get to the point where you realise

0:02:01 > 0:02:04you are not coping with an animal, aside from the RSPCA,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06we have got Blue Cross, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08the PDSA, the Dogs Trust,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11there are so many charities that can offer advice and help.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13What is your message to people?

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Because it does happen quite a lot at this time of year.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18If they are getting pets, what should they do?

0:02:18 > 0:02:20You need to do your research,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23it is not like buying a games console where, if you get bored,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25you can put it away in a drawer.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27They need more than just feeding and watering.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28They need to go to the vets.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31Some of the other basic care, apart from food and water,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35is vaccinating, flea treatment, worming, these are all musts.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Animals are a big commitment, they need lots of care and attention

0:02:39 > 0:02:42and if you are thinking about getting one,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45you need to know how to look after them and where to get advice

0:02:45 > 0:02:46if you are struggling.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48That way, maybe not so many of them

0:02:48 > 0:02:52will be abandoned in the future.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Next up, we're talking gadgets.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Lots of your parents say they find it harder to persuade you

0:02:57 > 0:02:58to switch off TVs, computers and phones

0:02:58 > 0:03:00than to get you to do homework.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03The charity Action for Children, who did the research,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05say too much screen time can slow down your learning

0:03:05 > 0:03:08and can impact on family relationships.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09So what do you think?

0:03:09 > 0:03:12How long do you spend online, watching TV or on your phone?

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Do you think you need to cut down or does it help you?

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Let us know now on the website.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21In football, Liverpool stole the show winning 1-0

0:03:21 > 0:03:25against Stoke City in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28Jordan Ibe's goal in the 37th minute left Stoke unable to recover.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Next, to calls from top politicians in the UK asking for more to be done

0:03:36 > 0:03:38to help child refugees from places like Syria.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42I've been looking at this one.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Over the past year, we've seen thousands of people

0:03:45 > 0:03:48leaving their homes in countries like Syria, in the Middle East,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51where war has destroyed towns and cities.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52They've travelled huge distances

0:03:52 > 0:03:56in search of a more a peaceful life in Europe.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Many of them are children,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01who have even ended up doing some of the journey by themselves.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Like 11-year-old Safid, who spoke to Newsround last year.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07He got separated from his dad

0:04:07 > 0:04:11as they travelled from Aghanistan to Europe.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13It took him a whole year to get to northern France,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16hoping to get to the UK.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20There are thousands of other children in the same situation.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22The UK Government has already said

0:04:22 > 0:04:25it will take in 20,000 Syrian refugees

0:04:25 > 0:04:27from camps in neighbouring countries like Jordan,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Lebanon and Turkey.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33But a group of politicians thinks the Government should be helping

0:04:33 > 0:04:37children who have already made it to Europe.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Often they have done that on their own and what we are saying today

0:04:40 > 0:04:42is that our country, the United Kingdom,

0:04:42 > 0:04:47should allow 3,000 of these children to come and live here in safety.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51I've come to this school to find out what some of you think about this.

0:04:51 > 0:04:56The UK right now is more or less full.

0:04:56 > 0:05:02Other countries like Germany have taken in over a million people

0:05:02 > 0:05:04and we should be able to match that and help out.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Well, the benefits would be they would have a better future,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11but the problems would be that there wouldn't be enough room

0:05:11 > 0:05:17in the schools.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19The Government has told Newsround that they're already helping

0:05:19 > 0:05:21to re-home vulnerable refugee children from Syria.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23And they also told us that they are giving money

0:05:23 > 0:05:25to create a safer world.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Next up, chameleons have one of the fastest tongues

0:05:28 > 0:05:29in the animal world.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Faster than a Formula 1 car!

0:05:31 > 0:05:34A new study by scientists looked at the speed by watching them

0:05:34 > 0:05:36in super-slow motion.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39They've found the smallest ones have the fastest tongues.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Finally, take a look online to see the black hole burpring out massive

0:05:44 > 0:05:47clouds of gas in a neighbouring galaxy.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49You won't want to miss that.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51That's all from Team Newsround this morning.

0:05:51 > 0:05:58Leah's back at 4:20 this afternoon.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Bye.
