0:00:00 > 0:00:00# I don't care... # Smash it, own it!

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Hi, I'm Martin and this is Newsround.

0:00:15 > 0:00:23First, have you ever seen anything on YouTube that worried you?

0:00:23 > 0:00:25There's been lots of reports about videos being put on YouTube

0:00:25 > 0:00:28that are not suitable for kids.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31And we've heard from kids who have seen upsetting videos on YouTube

0:00:31 > 0:00:33and YouTube Kids when they thought they were watching something

0:00:33 > 0:00:37meant for a children.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40So, as part of Safer Internet Day, Hayley decided to ask

0:00:40 > 0:00:41YouTube what's going on.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Chardonnay, Lamar, Molly, Siddique and Umema invited me

0:00:43 > 0:00:45to their school to tell me about their experiences on YouTube.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48So we asked Katie to come and meet us.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52She's the director of policy for Google who own YouTube.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56So, first of all, can you tell us how you are going to make it as safe

0:00:56 > 0:00:57as possible for kids?

0:00:57 > 0:00:59We've actually built a whole new platform called YouTube Kids

0:00:59 > 0:01:02where we take the best content, the stuff that you're most

0:01:02 > 0:01:04interested in, and put it on there in a packaged-up place

0:01:04 > 0:01:05just for kids.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08These kids here have got stories to tell you about their experiences

0:01:08 > 0:01:10on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11So, Chardonnay, would you like to go first?

0:01:11 > 0:01:15I was on YouTube listening to a song and an advert came up

0:01:15 > 0:01:16with scary messages.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19When I was on Kids YouTube, I was watching a child-friendly

0:01:19 > 0:01:21video by a YouTuber who was quite famous.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23In the video, the YouTuber started swearing.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25When I was on YouTube, I logged into a kid-friendly video

0:01:25 > 0:01:30about slime and a scary image popped up of a clown with blood on it.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34I felt really scared and I couldn't sleep that day and I feel YouTube

0:01:34 > 0:01:37should check the videos because there are lots of children

0:01:37 > 0:01:41from very different ages watching.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44I think YouTube should watch it before we watch it so kids

0:01:44 > 0:01:49like me don't get scared.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53All these guys have been upset or hurt in some way by what they've

0:01:53 > 0:01:57seen on YouTube and Kids YouTube, so what have you got to say to them?

0:01:57 > 0:02:00We don't want anyone to have a tough or bad experience and we work really

0:02:00 > 0:02:03hard to make sure people can see the kind of content we want.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06So I'm really sorry for all of you who have had good experiences

0:02:06 > 0:02:09on YouTube but also had bad or tough experiences.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10Isn't that too late for the kids?

0:02:10 > 0:02:13They are seeing dangerous things on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Surely you have a responsibility to check these things before

0:02:15 > 0:02:18any child sees them?

0:02:18 > 0:02:21We have a responsibility to make sure that the platform can

0:02:21 > 0:02:23survive and can thrive and so that we have a collection

0:02:23 > 0:02:26of content that comes from around the world on there,

0:02:26 > 0:02:30and we want people to be able to do that in a safe and responsible way.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33We also know that there is a diverse amount of content on YouTube,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37as there is on the wider internet, and it wouldn't be fair if I sat

0:02:37 > 0:02:39here and said to you, "We can make it perfectly safe."

0:02:39 > 0:02:41But things are still going wrong.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Kids are still seeing things on Kids YouTube

0:02:43 > 0:02:44that are inappropriate.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45Do you need to work harder?

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Do you need to do more?

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Absolutely, we need to do more.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51We need to do more to make sure children are able to experience

0:02:51 > 0:02:59the internet in a way that they feel confident of, in a way

0:03:00 > 0:03:03that they feel safe, in a way that they can flag content

0:03:03 > 0:03:05that isn't correct and they can get their education and support

0:03:05 > 0:03:08from us and from wider family and friends and school too.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11All these kids here have been quite hurt and upset.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Some of them have not been able to sleep at night

0:03:13 > 0:03:15after what they saw on YouTube.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Would you like to take this opportunity to say sorry to them

0:03:17 > 0:03:20and other kids who might have seen anything disturbing?

0:03:20 > 0:03:23I find it very tough to hear that you've seen and experienced things

0:03:23 > 0:03:26that you didn't want to and that you found really difficult on there.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I would really like to make sure that that doesn't

0:03:28 > 0:03:31happen again and I'm very, very sorry for any hurt

0:03:31 > 0:03:34or discomfort that you found because that's not nice,

0:03:34 > 0:03:35at any age.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38While we're talking about staying safe online, we know things

0:03:38 > 0:03:41you see and hear online can hurt your feelings or confuse you.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43But you don't need to be scared.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Own It is a new BBC website which can help.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49So, head to bbc.co.uk/ownit for real-life stories,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52advice from experts, fun quizzes, and videos

0:03:52 > 0:03:57with celebs and vloggers.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59100 years ago today, a change in the law gave women

0:03:59 > 0:04:02in the UK the right to vote in elections for

0:04:02 > 0:04:04the very first time.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07They still didn't have the same voting rights as men,

0:04:07 > 0:04:09but this marked an important step towards getting equality

0:04:09 > 0:04:11between men and women.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14But what does equality mean?

0:04:14 > 0:04:18We spoke to some amazing women to see what they had to say.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21It means that if the boys can do it, you can do it too.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Equality to me means listening to everybody and valuing

0:04:24 > 0:04:29what they have to say, no matter who they are.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33I see it loads in school where girls can't act the same way as boys or do

0:04:33 > 0:04:36the same things and then they get personally attacked by boys

0:04:36 > 0:04:44and that's not really cool.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49And to see that video in full, or if you want

0:04:49 > 0:04:51to know more about this

0:04:51 > 0:04:53subject, then head online where we've got all

0:04:53 > 0:04:54you need to know.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55Take a look.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56That's it from me for now.

0:04:56 > 0:04:57We'll be back at 8.15.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Bye.
